An unusual Australian session from reedman Dave Liebman – one that features some wonderful contributions from the great Mike Nock on piano! All three players work together on each track – and all shift reeds throughout the session – opening up majestically with inspiration from Elvin's drums, and some wonderful work from Gene Perla on bass. The setting is a perfect one for Jones – given the boundless energy already present on his studio sessions for Blue Note at the time – really fierce work that goes beyond even his classic Coltrane performances – pushing the limits in a sweet blend of rhythm and reeds! The group here is Elvin's razor-edge combo from the early 70s – the one that features Gene Perla on fat funky bass, and both Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman playing choppy reeds along with the grooves – really amazing hornmen at this point in their career, blowing here with interplay that's simply fantastic! Jones' leadership both draws from his years with Coltrane, yet also takes the music to key new levels – increasing the energy without blowing the top off, and creating a vivid new groove that so many others would try to cop later in the 70s – but never do this well. Titles on this second volume include "New Breed", "My Ship", and "Sweet Mama". CD

An excellent mid 70s Japanese fusion set, led by the Gil Evans protege Masabumi Kikuchi – with a very similar group to the one on his awesome Susto LP! The vibe isn't quite as funky on this outing – in fact it's a bit more reminiscent of Miles' spacey electric explorations – though there are some pretty hard groovin' moments should definitely appeal to fans of funky fusion. Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman play some nice coloristic lines on reeds, and Terumasa Hino is in fine form on trumpet. The rest of the group is rounded out by Reggie Lucas on guitar playing some hard choppy accompaniment to Kikuchi's synths and electric piano, Mtume on percussion, Al Foster on drums and Anthony Jackson on bass. We're especially keen on the dark and heavy "Auroral Flare", the spacious "Pacific Hushes" which opens with a beautiful line played by Hino and the set's closer "Alone". CD

There's an island on the cover, but the music is all-soul, all the way through – a great collection of classic mellow moments from years back, plus a few excellent choices from more recent years as well! A gimmicky record, but one that's pretty darn great – thanks to a very unusual approach that mixes the music of Miles Davis with Indian instrumentation! The players are a big part of the album's success – as they include Miles Davis alums like Gary Bartz on alto sax, Lenny White and Jimmy Cobb on drums, Michael Henderson on bass, Pete Cosey on guitar, Dave Liebman on flute, and Ron Carter on bass – and although a few tracks feature Wallace Roney on trumpet, that instrument is possibly one of the least-featured in the set! Instead, Miles' legacy is traced through very different territory – with a much stronger emphasis on the sitar, sarod, and percussion used on the record – often played with a spacious, exploratory feel that's quite unusual. Most numbers are completely transformed from their famous original versions – and titles include "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Blue In Green", "In A Silent Way", "All Blues", "Spanish Key", "So What", and "Miles From India". Some of Miles noisiest, freest playing from the 70s – recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1974, and originally issued only in Japan – most likely because the album was so darn noisy, Columbia was scared to release it to the American market! As with other Davis gems from this time, the group is as adventurous as Miles himself – a really great lineup with Dave Liebman and Azar Lawrence on reeds, plus rhythm from Michael Henderson on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Mtume on percussion – all matched by three searing electric guitarists – Reggie Lucas, Pete Cosey, and Dominique Gaumont – who duel back and forth in monster solos that run all over the place during the set! Way more than just a random jazz compilation – and instead a set that comes with a hefty book about the Boston jazz underground in the 70s – almost 80 pages in length, complete with images of records, vintage photos, and lots of notes on this under-documented scene! And while Boston's always been something of a hotbed of jazz activity – thanks to the younger students who hit the city to study at Berklee and other schools – this material represents a much deeper, more spiritual current of jazz – work that's in the same territory of the AACM or loft jazz scenes of the period, but also with a current of freewheeling electric material too!
