✨✧ Fred AstaireAstaire Story (3LP Box Set) ... LP
Verve/DRG, 1952. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really amazing set of recordings – vocal sessions done by Fred Astaire in the later season of his career – recorded in the studio with intimate backing by a Verve group that includes Oscar Peterson, Barney Kessel, Charlie Shavers, and Flip Phillips! The material features lovely new interpretations of tunes made famous by Astaire in films, but offered here in a much more relaxed, jazz-based mode. And whether you're a fan of his films or not, Astaire is one heck of a great singer – and hearing him in a setting like this, without the distraction of dancing or film, is really great proof of that fact! Titles include "Cheek To Cheek", "S'Wonderful", "You're Easy To Dance With", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Top Hat White Tie & Tails", "No Strings", and "I Concentrate On You" – plus a few instrumental numbers by the combo. LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s DRG pressing in a full image box set, with light wear and aging. Includes the booklet.)

✨✧ Diahann CarrollMagic Of Diahann Carroll – With The Andre Previn Trio/Live From The Persian Room ... CD
DRG, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 early albums from the lovely Diahann Carroll – both done in a very classy vocal style! The first 12 tracks on the CD feature work from an album that Carroll cut with the Andre Previn trio – done in a lightly laidback mode that has Diahann singing cooly and intimately on tunes that include "Spring Is Here", "I Should Care", "Gingerbread Boy", "Change Of Heart", "Glad To Be Unhappy", and "Nobody's Heart". The Persian Room set is a bit more upbeat – recorded with the orchestra of Peter Matz, in a style that pushes Carroll into more emotional depth, and which also gets a bit showy at times. Titles on that set includes "Misty", "Shopping Around", "Goody Goody", "Heat Wave", "All Or Nothing At All", and a few medley tracks. CD

When we were impressionable little arty tykes, this was one of our favorite soundtracks. It's got some beautiful Satie-esque tracks that feature solo piano by Vladimir Cosma, plus some weird Euro electronic stuff that has a nice cold feel to it. Also features a few tracks from the opera "La Wally", but we always skipped over these. Titles include "Voie Sans Issue", "Gorodish", "Promenade Sentimentale", "Metro Police", and "Lame De Fond". Som Livre/DRG, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gently sophisticated work from Gal Costa – tracks recorded either with small group backing, or some larger arrangements that make some nice use of strings. The whole album's got the ambitious feel of some of the recent titles on the Biscoito Fino label – and arrangements are by Eduardo Souto Netto and Julinho Teixeira. Titles include "Sabado Em Copacabana", "Brigas", "Fim De Caso", "Nervos De Aco", "Kalu", "Chora Tua Tristeza", "Pra Machuchar Meu Coracao", "Linda Flor", and "Alguem Como Tu". CD

✨✧ Blossom DearieBlossoms On Broadway (Blossom Sings Broadway/Blossom Dearie Sings Comden & Green) ... LP
DRG, Late 50s/1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Double LP compilation of two albums that she originally recorded for Verve – Blossom Sings Broadway & Blossom Dearie Sings Comden and Green. Two great albums, and almost impossible to find in the original. Blossom at her best, with tight jazzy backing that's never as drippy as the later cocktail-ish arrangements that mar some of her records. Showtunes, but done in the great breathy Blossom style, with a nice jazzy edge to them. LP, Vinyl record album

Judy HollidayTrouble Is A Man ... CD
DRG/Sony, Late 50s. Used ... $4.99
An obscure bit of boozy sad songs – proof that Holliday had a lot more to offer than just an extremely strong showing on Broadway. She's working here with arrangements by Glen Osser that sort of take off from the spirit of "The Party's Over" – sad and dreamy, but also with a bit of hope. Titles include "Lonely Town", "How About Me", "Trouble is A Man", "Am I Blue", "Confession", and "An Occasional Man". CD

✨✧ Lena HorneSoul (with previously unreleased bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/DRG, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Groovy Lena Horne from the 60s – an album that's a heck of a lot hipper and more swinging than most of her sets from a decade before! That unmistakable Horne style of singing is still very much in place here – but the backings are often tightly punctuated, with a gently soulful groove that definitely lives up to the title, and which serves up most of the tracks with a nice little sense of rhythm. Ray Ellis is working here with Lena on the backings – and his style is arguably a bit groovier than usual too, with more of the syncopations you might find in mid 60s Quincy Jones or Oliver Nelson. Titles include "I Got A Worried Man", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Love Bug", "Taste Of Honey", "I'd Like To Hear It Sometime", and "You Know What To Do". CD also features 6 bonus tracks – previously unreleased – including "Unforseen Hands", "Dream Child", "On Green Dolphin Street", "I Get Along Without You Very Well", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "I Keep Forgetting You". ✨✧ Jackie & RoyBeautiful Sea – Songs Of Sun, Sand & Sea ... CD
DRG, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A later set by Jackie & Roy, but still plenty darn great – and not nearly as hokey as you might expect from the title! All tracks are sea-themed – but the range of work is surprisingly sophisticated, and perfectly illustrates the ever-deep quality of the Jackie & Roy sound, even at a time when it would be easy for the pair to fall into simple cliches of their older work. As before, the pair display a wonderful ear for a compelling tune – and draw here on work from traditional sources, as well as the hipper end of the jazz songwriting spectrum – work by Tommy Wolf, Mark Murphy, Dave Frishberg, and even Herbie Hancock. The set includes a great vocalese take on "Dolphin Dance", the original number "Full Moon", a slight reworking of "Song Of The Boy & The Dolphins", and the tracks "Boats", "The Shining Sea", "Moon Over Miami", "Home By The Sea", "Zanzibar", and "Sand In My Shoes". Antonio Carlos JobimLive At Minas/Em Minas Ao Vivo – Piano E Voz ... CD
Biscoito Fino/DRG, 1981. Used ... $8.99
The magic of Jobim lives once again – in this rare live recording from 1981! The performance is wonderfully intimate – and features Jobim on piano and vocals, with no other backing, plus passages in which he talks about his music with the audience, creating a really personal approach – one that's quite different from the impeccable production of his studio work. As usual, Biscoito Fino have done a wonderful job of putting the package together – and the sound of the set is surprisingly rich, a key factor in making a performance like this come across well on CD. Titles include "Desafinado", "Corcovado", "Ligia", "Modinha", "Eu Preciso De Voce", "Eu Nao Existo Sem Voce", "Estrada Do Sol", and "Aguas De Marco". CD

✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimUnknown (aka Inedito) ... CD
DRG, 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rare later work by Antonio Carlos Jobim – but done in a sweet and lovely style that hearkens back to his 60s bossa classics! As with many later recordings by Jobim, this one's a real family affair – and features vocals from Elizabeth and Ana Lontra Jobim, guitar from Paulo Jobim, and some guest appearances from both Danilo and Simone Caymmi. Tom himself is on piano and vocals on a number of tracks, and the overall style of recording is lightly jazzy – done with mostly acoustic instrumentation, and arranged in a dreamily floating way by Tom, Paulo, and Jacques Morelenbaum. Titles include "Imagina", "Wave", "Chega De Saudade", "Modinha", "Canta Canta Mais", "Por Causa De Voce", "Desafinado", and "Estrada Do Sol". Quite long, too – with a total of 24 tracks in all! CD

A compilation of tracks from the different Jobim songbooks on Lumiar. The album fits together nicely, and represents some of Jobim's last recordings ever! Titles include "Joao Ninguem", "Samba Do Carioca", "Valsa Brasileira", "O Bem Do Mar", "Milagre", "Por Toda Minha Vida", and "Na Batucada Da Vida". CD

✨✧ Marian McPartlandWith You In Mind ... CD
Capitol/DRG, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful "with strings" session by Marian McPartland – recorded in a mostly trio mode, but done with some gentle shadings by a small string quartet, in a way that really deepens her sound a lot! McPartland's trio sides of the 50s are usually fine, but often not that moving to our ears – and the slight addition of strings here brings a sense of emotion to the tunes that's sometimes missing from McPartland's keys alone. The style's never too flowery or romantic, but used in a way that conveys some nice darker moods on the tunes – and although the tunes are mostly familiar, they take on some new qualities here as Marian's lovely piano echoes out over the strings. Titles include "This Is New", "Love Walked In", "I Remember You", "Autumn Nocturne", and "After All". CD

✨✧ Gerry Mulligan/Shorty RogersModern Sounds/Gerry Mulligan & His Ten-Tette ... CD
Capitol/DRG, 1951/1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great double-length CD that features 2 key west coast jazz sessions from Capitol Records! First up is Shorty Rogers' Modern Sounds – seminal west coast work from the start of the 50s! The group here is Rogers at his hippest – before a bigger rise to 50s fame, and right at the start of a great run as a leader and arranger on his own. The Giants combo here features Art Pepper on alto, Jimmy Giuffre on tenor, John Graas on French horn, and Hampton Hawes on piano – all playing with a style that's tight, yet still has plenty of swing, and a lot more room for individual group voices than other later arrangers who tried to cop Shorty's style! All tracks are extremely playful, but without sounding gimmicky – and tunes include "Four Mothers", "Didi", "Sam & The Lady", "Over The Rainbow", "Apropos" and "Popo". Next is Gerry Mulligan & His Ten-Tette – an early cooker from Mulligan, who's working with a real birth of the cool-styled group that includes Chet Baker and Pete Candoli on trumpets, Bud Shank on alto, John Graas on French horn, Bob Enevoldsen on trombone, and Chico Hamilton on drums – a really wonderful group that has a swing that's might lighter than you might guess from its size! The set is nicely arranged throughout – an early example of Gerry's powers in this respect – with plenty of thought in each tune, yet never so much so that the proceedings get too academic. Titles include "Rocker", "Walking Shoes", "Simbah", "Ontet", "Westwood Walk", "A Ballad", "Taking A Chance On Love", and "Flash". CD

Late work by jazz drum giant Buddy Rich – captured in a surprisingly energetic, firey, and sometimes funky mode at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1980! Buddy really pulled off some bright, buoyant, funk influenced work in the 70s and this set finds him at the tail end of that groove – playing with a pretty big group that includes Ernie Vantrease on piano, Wayne Pedziwiatr on bass, Ando Fusco, Jack Leibowitz, Steave Marcus and Kenny Hitchcock on saxes, Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, Roger Homefield on lead trombone, and others. Titles include "Intro/Beulah Witch", "Grand Concourse", "Blues A La 88", "Saturday Night", "Slow Funk" and the epic, 15+ minute closer "Good News". CD

✨✧ Jo StaffordAutumn In New York & Other Classics (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/DRG, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely Capitol Records work from Jo Stafford – a full album of recordings with Paul Weston, packaged with a heck of a lot of bonus tracks as well! The set starts out with the core Autumn In New York set – a record that features Stafford's sentimental vocals wrapped up warmly in backings from Weston – string-heavy at times, but in a really dreamy way that works perfectly for Jo's blue-tinged vocals. The album's got a great sense of love lost and longing – and titles include "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "If I Loved You", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Through The Years", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Haunted Heart", and "Some Enchanted Evening". Remaining tracks trace Stafford's career nicely through the Capitol years – offering up some recordings with The Pied Pipers, Gordon MacRae, and Johnny Mercer, plus more solo tracks too – on titles that include "Tell Me Why", "Alice Blue Gown", "Tim-Tayshun", "Jamboree Jones", "Dream", "Rockin Chair", "The Wish That I Wish Tonight", and "Let The Rest Of The World Go By". 23 tracks in all. ✨✧ Dakota StatonTime To Swing (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/DRG, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's time to swing, but with a classy sound throughout – very much the best mix of modes Dakota Staton brought to her key early years at Capitol Records! Backings are by Sid Feller, and are pretty darn jazzy throughout – more so than some of Sid's other work of the time – a perfectly soulful setting for Staton's amazing vocals – very poised at points, yet never as stiff or stodgy as some of her contemporaries. Dakota's got a deep-toned approach to these tracks that really helps make the album way more than just another recording of familiar standards – and instead, does a great job of taking tunes into rich new territory. There's loads of great reedwork – from Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Budd Johnson – and titles include "If I Should Lose You", "When Lights Are Low", "Willow Weep For Me", "But Not For Me", "The Song Is You", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". Bonus tracks include "You'd Better Go Now", "You've Changed", "All In My Mind", "Detour Ahead", and "Once There Lived A Fool". CD

Beautiful mid 60s Capitol albums from the great Nancy Wilson – 1964's Gentle Is My Love and 1965's How Glad I Am –together in a single package and very well paired sets from a fertile creative period for Nancy! How Glad I Am is actually up first in the set, with some grander, more swinging arrangements courtesy Sid Feller, but still plenty soulful, thanks largely to Nancy's untouchable vocals. Titles include "(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am", "The Grass Is Greener", "I Want To Be With You", "West Coast Blues", "There Will Never Be Enough Of You" and more. Gentle Is My Love is another lovely set – a bit lusher, and a bit more pop-vocal oriented than some of Nancy's other Capitol albums – again with arrangements by Sid Feller, and a rich string-laden sound that's nicely juxtaposed against Nancy's soulful vocals. Titles include "Gentle Is My Love", "When He Makes Music", "Funnier Than Funny", "If Love Is Good To Me", and "More". CD
