Ray GaskinsNight In The Life ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Sweet jazzy work from Ray Gaskins – saxophonist, keyboard player, and a surprisingly great singer too – working here in a smooth little set that gives him a chance to show off every side of his talents! Ray plays a good deal of the instruments on the record himself, overdubbed with a cool sort of groove – and he also gets help from a core rhythm combo too, as well as some hip guest work from Roy Ayers on vibes and Jocelyn Brown on vocals, each of whom guest on a track apiece. The best numbers here have a smooth-stepping groove that's really great – much more stripped-down than the usual mainstream work of this type, and with an undeniably soulful groove that's right up there with other great work on the Expansion label. Titles include "Butterfly", "Lullabye", "Ashes To Ashes", "Ray's Strut", "Crystal Clear", "Down Home", "Shady Lane", and "Summertime". CD

✨✧ John HartCheckmate ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
John Hart has a crystal clear sense of tone on his guitar – one that almost hearkens back to some of the key jazz players of the postwar years, but which also has a nice edge too – coming across with a very personal, individual quality that's supported by a fair bit of original material on the date too! The group's a quartet – with David Wong on bass and Andy Watson on drums – and Gary Smulyan contributes some wonderful lines on baritone sax, deepening the sound past the tones of Hart's guitar – creating a really great counterbalance in tone! Titles include the originals "Power Of Three", "Right To Lie", "Bittersweet", "Checkmate", "Miniature", and "123 Blues". CD

✨✧ Bernard HerrmannFilm Scores On Phase 4 (7CD set) ... CD
Phase 4/Decca, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful package – one that presents the famous film composer in one of his best recording settings of all time! Bernard Herrmann is a legend for soundtrack work in two different generations – the postwar years, when he scored some of the most important films by Alfred Hitchcock – and the 70s, when he returned to greatness with scores for Martin Scorcese, and other directors. Yet the work here is pretty darn wonderful too – kind of a bookmark between the two generations, as Herrmann was working with the British Phase 4 label – known for their tremendous studio abilities, and crystal clear sound that was years ahead of its time! The first six albums in the set are all compilations – in which Herrmann offers up his own arrangements and re-recordings of both his own work, and titles by others – on albums that include The Great Movie Thrillers, Music From Great Film Classics, The Fantasy Film World Of Bernard Herrmann, Music From Great Shakespearean Films, The Mysterious Film World Of Bernard Herrmann, and Great British Film Music. The set finishes with a final original score by Herrmann – his striking music for the Brian DePalma film Obsession – part of his return to greatness in the 70s! CD

Etta JamesQueen Of Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Kent (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Queen of Soul is right! Heck, on these early albums, Etta practically invented soul – or at least invented a deep soul style of singing that would be taken up by countless other female singers during the 60s, but rarely matched with this kind of brilliance. Straight up beautiful stuff! The arrangements are uncredited, but we think they're probably by Riley Hampton – who did so much of Etta's other wonderful work in the early 60s. The recordings for sure took place at points between '62 and '64, mostly in Chicago, with couple in New York and one in Nashville. One other thing that is crystal clear about the sessions is that she had access to the very best musicians and the best sound possible – all you need is a listen to know that! The album's an all-solid, all-soul record with loads of obscure tunes and not a bit of filler! Titles include "Flight 101", "Bobby Is His Name", "Breaking Point", "Mello Fellow", "Do Right", and "Somewhere Out There". This first ever proper CD release is loaded with excellent bonus material – recordings from the same early-to-mid 60s period – 13 of them "You Got Me Where You Want Me", "Only Time Will Tell", "Pushover". "You Can't Talk To A Fool", "Would It Make Any Difference To You", "Pay Back", "Tomorrow Night", "I Can't Hold It Any More" and more. 23 tracks in all! CD

Joyce & Tutty MorenoSamba Jazz & Outras Bossas ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Incredibly lovely work from Joyce – quite possibly her best album in years, and a set that's filled with the same scatting brilliance we loved in her classics from the 70s and 80s! The set's done in collaboration with husband/drummer Tutty Moreno – and the pair lead a small combo with a nicely jazzy feel that further enforces the freely soaring lines in Joyce's vocals! Instrumentation includes a shifting array of saxes, flute, clarinet, and piano – plus plenty of warm guitar from Joyce, played with a crystal clear and sensitive sound. Titles include "Garoto", "Sabe Quem", "Tema Pro Baden", "Bodas De Vinil", "Magica", "Penalty", "April Child", "Shangri-La", and a great cover of Tenorio Jr's classic "Embalo". CD

Lee MorganDelightfulee Morgan (SHMCD pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $18.99
A really unique album from the great Lee Morgan – a set that features the trumpeter in two different settings, but in a way that really works well together! Most of the album has Lee blowing in a very cool quintet – with Joe Henderson on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a group who maybe bring out a slightly hipper vibe that really points the way to the rest of Morgan's direction in the late 60s, when he was really letting some more spiritual currents loose. The other two tracks on the record feature a hip larger band directed by Oliver Nelson – swinging hard in a really soulful style! Nelson's arrangements on these two tracks are great – quite progressive, with a soul jazz big band style that seems to point the way towards the 70s – and the band provides a raging backdrop that lets Lee's trumpet soar over the top in beautiful crystal clear solos. Titles include "Nite Flite", "Delightful Deggie", "Ca-Lee-So", and "Zambia". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – "Need It", "Filet Of Soul", "Zambia (big band version)", and "Delightful Deggie (big band version)". CD

Posi tone, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Great work from this top-shelf group of up-and coming players – all newer artists on the Posi-Tone label, hence their name – but working with the kind of crystal clear focus on original material that always makes the label so great! If you love Posi-Tone as much as we do, you'll likely have other albums by these artists – but the lineup together is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a bold sense of arrangement that seems to have each soloist spurring the other on to new heights – amidst original material written by the members of the group! Players include Brandon Lee on trumpet, Markus Howell on alto, Nicole Glover on tenor, Caili O'Doherty on piano, Adi Meyerson on bass, and Cory Cox on drums – on titles that include "Luna Lovejoy", "Shades Of Brown", "Whistleblower", "Afloat", "Stop Gap", "Hold MY Heart", and "Blues For Tangier". ✨✧ VariousKeep A Hold On Him – More Garpax Girls ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime female sounds from the 60s – mostly soul, but a bit of rock too – all handled by landmark Cali producer Gary S Paxton! Paxton was a great talent at the time – not only for finding new aritsts, but also bringing them into their best light – coaching young solo singers and girl groups on some of their first trips into professional recording studios in some cases, so that the performances are remarkably assured and strong – girlish or naive-sounding only when the theme of the song calls for it, and more often surprisingly powerful for the early 60s period! As usual with Ace Records, the sound and the package are wonderful – crystal-clear remastering, and notes that show the whole underground world in which Paxton was a key! Includes "Just A Little Bit More" by The Idols, "Losing Control", "It's A Lonely World" and "A Tear" by Mary Saxton, "Keep A Hold On Him" and "Operator Operator" by Beatrice Lee, "I Won't Be Hurt Anymore" by Josephine Sunday, "Reap What You Sow" by Linda Mackey, "Why Mist I Cry" by The Idols, "Yosemite Sam" by Judy & The Jades, "It Kinda Picks Me Up" by Tanya Marie and more. 24 tracks in all. Edu LoboSergio Mendes Presents Edu Lobo ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1970. Used ... $8.99
The first (and maybe only) American release by one of the greatest Brazilian singer/songwriters of the sixties – and a record that's quite different than any Sergio Mendes work of the time, despite Sergio's name in the title! The vibe is like Lobo's best of Brazil from the late 60s – a post-bossa set that's quite complicated overall – rich in filling, and full of sweeping production, haunting compositions, and great jazzy arrangements. Players on the session include Hermeto Pascoal, Airto, Oscar Castro-Neves, Tiao Neto, and Claudio Slon – and Sergio Mendes was involved in the arrangements, but clearly the main focus was given to Lobo – as the overall quality is much deeper. The record includes great recordings of some of Edu's classic compositions – like "Zanzibar", "Ponteio", and "Casa Forte" – plus, it's got some other tracks that he never did before, like "Crystal Illusions", "Sharp Tongue", and "Hey Jude". CD
