Brother ResistanceTonite Is De Night/Rapso Space Dub/Crucial Decision (92 version)/Nation Time ... 12-inch
Cree (Germany), Late 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Great grooves from Brother Reistance – tracks that are aimed at the dancefloor, but which also have a strong social message too! "Tonite Is De Night" is a cool call to action, set to a rhythm with tight tropical touches – and "Crucial Decision" is presented here in the 1992 version, with skittish rhythms topped with a nice steel drum keyboard part! "Rapso Space Dub" is unreleased, and a nicely spooky sort of groove – and "Nation Time" is a great late take on the tropical disco mode! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lancelot LayneBlow Way ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever collection we've seen to focus on the mighty talents of Lancelot Layne – an important talent on the Trinidad scene of the 70s – and an artist who really helped forge a unique hybrid of soul at the time! The music here isn't the usual Caribbean club groove – although Layne was a big inspiration on those later sounds – and instead, the music weaves together elements of older island styles, hipper 70s jazz and funk inflections, and some of the pride and power that were burning bright during this important generation of soul music. A number of cuts have very cool percussion – which creates an earthier undercurrent than you might expect – and we can honestly say that there's no easy comparisons we can make with this music, given its unique approach! Titles include "Bringin Off", "Kaiso For Mout Band", "Song For Music", "Carnival Drum Song", "Afro Dadian", "Ubawa", "In A Man's Life", "Chant", "Get Off The Radio", and "Free South Africa". 30 tracks in all! ✨✧ Ben MolatziNo Way To Go ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The rough-cut image on the front cover is a perfect accompaniment to the music on the disc – the first-ever issue of recordings made by Namibian guitarist/singer Ben Molatzi – tracks recorded both in the studio and out in the field, with a wonderfully stripped-down sound overall! Molatzi's got a quality that's really timeless, and very different than most other music coming out of the southern side of Africa during the early 80s – acoustic guitar as the only instrumentation, but neither folksy, nor old school West African at all – instead maybe used as this way of inflecting Ben's really beautiful, spiritual vocal approach – a mode of vocalizing that sometimes takes wordless directions, or which is echoed by whistling and other vocal effects too. The music is impossible to describe in easy words, but is instantly powerful and captivating – on titles that include "Aesa Khaure", "Tae E Ta Go Di", "Danisa Sam", "Sida Lhu", "Gamrona Om", "Ausi Nama", "Dama Hao", "DRMD", and "Ben's Fluit Iiedjie". Andre Tanker FiveAfro Blossom West (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cree (Germany), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A jazzy combo from the Caribbean – led by a singer who also plays some really wonderful vibes! The rhythms are strong, with a definite dose of calypso in the mix – but the overall sound is much more in the jazz side of the spectrum, thanks to fluidly melodic sounds from Andre Tanker on vibes! Tanker also sings a bit too – but he's open to Latin modes and soul jazz styles, which makes him sound a lot different than anything you might expect from a late 60s album recorded in Trinidad! In fact, a few of these tunes even hit a boogaloo groove – which is perfect for the vibes – and others maybe echo some of the groovier Verve records modes of the time. Titles include "Party In The City", "Lena", "Swahili", "Ho Ba La La", "Homburg", "Do Me So La So So", and "Old Lady Walk A Mile". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCole Slaw Music Club – A Rhythm & Blues Revue ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Hard-grooving R&B from a host of hip talents from the 50s – music that's a bit blues, a bit jazz, and which goes past the obvious tunes you'd usually find on a collection like this! The cuts were chosen by the folks at the Cole Slaw Club in Germany – a specialist spot to step to old school grooves like these – and the sounds are a very cool mix of jukebox jive, groovy instrumentals, and some deeper-voiced tunes that really give the collection a lot of depth! The collection's not afraid to step between different genres in search of a swinging groove – in the best Bear Family/Cree Records style – and titles include "I Changed My Mind Jack" by Jo Ann Campbell, "Spider In The Web" by The Dooley Sisters, "Big John" by Richard Berry, "The Sneak" by Jimmy Oliver's Orchestra, "Salome Twist" by The Carroll Brothers, "Talk About Me" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Sugar Diabetes" by Eddie Banks, "Stolen Love" by Miss Lavell, "Sweet Little Love Like You" by Al Brown & The Tune Toppers, "Dance Of The Goony Bird" by Pat Miller, "Summertime" by Sylvia Mora, and "My Old Man" by Buddy & Ella Johnson. VariousDoing Our Thing – More Soul From Jamdown 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.98
A long-overdue second volume of the Soul From Jamdown series – issued 15 years after the first one, and maybe even more incredible overall! As before, the focus here is on Jamaican music that draws very direct inspiration from American soul – sometimes as cover versions of famous tracks, sometimes as answer songs to work from the US – but all set to very groovy reggae, rocksteady, and early dancehall rhythms! The vocals are wonderful – many of the singers really take inspiration from the best years of American deep soul and sweet soul – and bring a heartbreaking vibe to the lyrics – and while the earliest years of Jamaican soul has been well-documented, these later years are more unusual territory – and beautifully covered here. The package comes with a huge amount of notes, and also includes lots of images of the original records – and titles include "Too Late" by Augustus Pablo, "Cornbread Earl & Me" by Dillinger, "Supernatural Thing" by Richard Ace, "Breezin" by Willie Lindo, "Ain't That Loving You" by Hortense Ellis, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" by John Holt, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by Junior Byles, "Special Request To The Manhattans" by Phillip Frazer, "Thin Line Between Love & Hate" by BB Seaton, "Do Your Thing" by Glen Adams, and "Johnny Dollar" by Dave Barker. Cree (Germany), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $13.99 21.99
A very cool side of the Sly & Robbie legend – a series of recordings the duo made with a range of different singers – all as Jamaican-styled remakes of American soul and club tracks from the 70s! The vibe here is definitely more reggae than disco – with a groove slowed down a lot more than the speed of Studio 54 – and the pair are really coming into their own as creative talents, working on the experience they gained for years on other folks' records – which really helps create the right sort of rhythms for these grooves. As you'd guess from the dates in the title, the set stretches into the digital reggae years – which turned out to be one of the most productive periods for Sly & Robbie – and titles include "Sexual Healing" by Jimmy Riley, "Show & Tell" by Ken Boothe, "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by Home T-4, "Inner City Blues" by Delroy Wilson, "Break Your Promise" by Barry Biggs, "You Must Believe In Me" by Junior Tamlins Moore, "Fever" by Marcia Griffiths, and "Rainy Night In Georgia" by Tinga Stewart. ✨✧ VariousTropical Trips Vol 1 – Life Is Better In The Tropics ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tropical club in many flavors – all pulled from the usually-expensive set of reissues done by the Cree Records label – presented here in a very nicely-priced package! Given that most Cree reissues are on 12" singles that push the $20 mark, the 16 tracks within come at a very big bargain – and the whole thing's a great introduction to the special world that's often documented by the label's tropical reissues – rare cuts from a time when the sounds of the New York dancefloors were filtering down to the West Indies – and when things were also changing a bit up north, due to a new wave of immigration to the US. Titles include "Umbaway" by Lancelot Layne, Lena" by The Andre Tanker Five, "Trinidad" by Papa Music, "Wajang Woman (Frankie Francis sofrito edit)" by Embryo, "Can't Stop Dancing" by Michael Boothman, & Kysofusion Band, "Remember Mama" by Sugar Minott, "Tabu" by Michael Boothman & Family Tree, "South African Reggae" by Cedric Brooks, "Rub A Dub Soka" by Merchant & The Network Riddum Band, and "Party Time" by Cinnamon Suns. Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality (clear vinyl) ... LP
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $44.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoFree ... LP
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoFree/Identity/Promises Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Mose's best early albums – even though he hardly gets a chance to sing on it! The album features some great work by Allison's trio of the time – Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums – simple piano-driven groovers, performed with a slight gutbuckety approach, and lots of sweet down home soul. Mose sings a bit on the classic "Seventh Son", a groover that's kept him going for years, and on the great tune "If You Live", which also has a similar feel. Other tracks include "Mule", "If I Didn't Care", "Moon & Cypress", and "Creek Bank". LP, Vinyl record album

Mose AllisonDown Home Piano ... LP
Prestige, 1958. Very Good ... $11.99
An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've only heard Allison's better-known numbers with singing, you'll really be floored here at his skills as an instrumentalist – particularly in the way he manages to play the piano with deep-down roots, yet also hit some stunningly modern tones as well! Accompaniment is by Addison Farmer on bass, plus either Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Dinner On The Ground", "Crepuscular Air", "Mule", "Creek Bank", "Town", "Devil In The Cane Field", "The Minstrels", "Moon & Cypress", "Carnival", and "Mojo Woman". Edwin Astley/Tony CrombieInternational Detective/Man From Interpol ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A pair of cool British TV soundtracks – both of which feature an action jazz style to rival the best early work of Henry Mancini for the television screen! First up is lost spy soundtrack work from the British composer Edwin Astley – best known for his work on The Saint and Danger Man, but also sounding pretty darn great on the earlier program International Detective! The feel here is similar to some of Astley's better-known work – a more dramatic take on the crime jazz used on American TV in the late 50s – one that retains much of the instrumental elements of the sound, especially the well-placed use of saxes – but which also uses larger orchestrations to flesh out the music nicely, creating a stronger, more cinematic feel. The set features a total of 21 tracks from this short-lived show – and titles include "International Detective", "Murder Strip", "Theme For Larceny", "Night Patrol", "The Badge", "Manhunt", "Shock Tactics", "Murder Chase", and "Concerto In Law". Next is Man From Interpol – one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre". CD

✨✧ Brian AugerFull Circle – Live At Bogie's ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Brian Auger doesn't come full circle with his early work – and instead, he moves far forward – really soaring here in a tight trio setting, with even more jazz in the mix than on his classic recordings! The set's a great reminder that – despite all the keyboards, funk, and soul that Auger has given us over the decades – he's also a hell of a jazz musician too, and really jumps out with lively vibe throughout – echoing a bit of 60s soul jazz modes, but also sounding a lot less retro than you might expect! If anything, the set almost has Brian reinventing himself as a player who can groove, but in a lyrical way – as he served up nice takes on "Creepin", "Little Sunflower", "All Blues", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "For Dancers Only". Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Warner, 1978. Near Mint- 3LP ... $19.99
One of the most iconic rock and roll shows of all time – the late 70s farewell to The Band – and quite famously, much more final concert by an esteemed band, it's actually a rock, pop, folk, blues and soul summit that features The Band as the house band. This landmark document of the event has always been one of rock's more opulent releases – with appearances by Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, The Staples and more. Includes "The From The Last Waltz", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "Down In South New Orleans" with Bobby Charles, "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan, "I Shall Be Released (Finale)", "Rag Mama Rag", "Further Up The Road" with Eric Clapton, "Dry Your Eyes" with Eric Clapton, "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris, "The Weight" with The Staples and more. Warner, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

Fantasy, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold ... $6.99
A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect! The album's as essential as any of the group's earlier albums – and it's filled with great versions of classics like "Supernatural Feeling", "Gut Level", "Walking In Rhythm", "Do It Fluid", "Rock Creek Park", and "Happy Music". ✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! King Britt presents Sylk 130Re-Members Only ... CD
Ovum/Six Degrees, 2001. Used ... $0.99
The latest from this hip producer, and an album that's got a cool sound that's 2 parts underground soul, and 3 parts mid 80s R&B – complete with guest appearances by Alison Moyet, Martin Fry, Kathy Sledge, Alma Horton, Grover Washington Jr, and Trugoy of De La Soul. In a way, this is the kind of modern R&B album that we always looked for back in the 80s, but rarely found put together so well. King Britt's production is enough to hold together the mad vision of the set – and the melange of guest stars comes out sounding remarkably coherent in the end. One of the greatest albums ever for Blue Note – and the only album recorded by tenor player Tina Brooks that was issued during his lifetime! The album's nearly perfect – and features Brooks' edgey tenor set in an all star group that includes Duke Jordan on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Brooks had blown on other Blue Note sessions before, but here, working as a leader, his sound is tremendous – vaguely to the left of center of some of his other tenor counterparts on the label, but with an equally impeccable approach to soul and rhythm. Warner/Straight, 1972. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A later effort from Tim Buckley with a bigger sound and more of a straight ahead approach – with a big nod in the groove direction and some R&B creeping in! In lesser hands, Greetings From LA could be considered more of a "commercial" album than the unpredictable stylistic variances of Tim's earlier records, but his vocals and depth of passion keeps it a riveting experience. Rolling boogie piano, some vamping organ, groovy strings, and even some female chorus backing vocals bring elements of 70s soul and juke joint sounds into the mix – while Buckley's emoting is on par with earlier work – even if some of the lyrics are kind of on the bawdy side. Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Swirling strings galore – but served up with just the right mix of sex and drama to fit the spirit of this second Airport film! The music is a lot more complex than the first time around – and sometimes has these spare dramatic moments that echo European thrillers of the period, mixed with some even hipper numbers that show some cool colors coming together in this brilliant tapestry that works very well apart from the screen. A few numbers echo earlier bossa modes – including a take on "How Insensitive" and "A Man & A Woman" – and other tunes include the great "Airport 1975 Theme", plus "Montage", "Alexander's Death", "In Flight Collision", and "Interludium". A seminal soundtrack from the legendary John Carpenter – one of those key records that showed the world that he was as great of a composer as he was a director! The album's a Carpenter-esque masterpiece – lots of cool, spare electronics – used in ways that make the whole movie a whole lot scarier than even the images on the screen – a quality you'll definitely appreciate here as you listen to the album on its own! Some of the best sounds are the most subtle – spare use of basslines and keyboards that almost make you feel as if Moebius and Rodelius have gone over to the dark side – and these are mixed with just a few more "action" based moments. Titles include "Up The Wall/Air Force 1", "Everyone's Coming To New York", "The Duke Arrives/The Barricade", "Back To The Pod/The Crazies Come Out", "Police State/Romero & The President", and "Chase Across The 69th Street Bridge". The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! The result is great, and the music has far more drama than you might expect away from the screen – maybe even more so, as it stands here as a top-rate sonic adventure, whereas the film might not make such a claim! Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent album from this sublime soul trio! The record's got a nice heavy style – similar to the funky soul that was creeping into the sound of other artists on the Invictus label – and it rumbles along with a nice fuzzy edge that adds a whole new dimension to the incredible vocals of the group. Holland-Dozier-Holland produced, but the real skill here is that of General Johnson and Greg Perry – who wrote all the songs on the album save one – and whose vocal genius really makes the whole thing soar. The album yielded no hits for the group, but still has plenty of great numbers – and with General Johnson's vocals, just about anything would sound great! Cuts include "Bittersweet", "Weary Traveler", "So Glad You're Mine", "Elmo James", "Working On A Building Of Love", and "Men Are Getting Scarce". Kalita, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99
Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Titles include "Iyo Re", "Elelemi", "Ere Yon", "Re Hese", "It's All For You", "Sogio", and "Gossiper Scandal Monger". CD

Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. Mercury/Cherry Red (UK), 1983/1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
80s magic from Con Funk Shun – a pair of albums back to back! Fever is one of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked". Electric Lady is a relatively beat-heavy set from Con Funk Shun – one that has them moving into some of the same spaces as their ensemble funk contemporaries, and using a bit more programmed rhythms than before! Given their pedigree with grooves, the group still manages to keep things soulful – and the album's still got the group at their funky best – and is definitely not in the vein of some of the more commercial work of this type from the mid 80s. Lead vocals are mostly by Michael Cooper, and titles include "Turn The Music Up", "Electric Lady", "Don't Go", "Circle Of Love", "Pretty Lady", "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do", and "I'm Leaving Baby". Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". ✨✧ Patrick CorneliusThis Should Be Fun ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Patrick Cornelius steps out here both as a strong leader, and as a great songwriter too – on a set that's filled with almost all original material from the pen of the alto saxophonist – tunes that have a strong sense of color and verve, which makes the record one of the most illuminating to date from Cornelius! The group's also got a real strength in the piano of John Escreet – who has some sharper edges that really enrich the vibe of the record – and Patrick's alto lines are also balanced with a nice sense of depth from trombonist Nick Vayenas, a player we don't know at all – but who seems to be finding his own with the set. The rest of the group features Ben Allison on bass and Mark Ferber on drums – and titles include "Precious Souls", "Telescope", "Big Pictures", "This Should Be Fun", "For Morgan", and "Restless Willow". James CottonPure Cotton ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good- ... $11.99
The second Verve album from James Cotton, and oddly a rootsier effort than the first! While Cotton's debut often had some more soul-styled grooves in the mix, this one's a lot more stripped-down and bluesy – in a style that echoes Chess Records from a decade before! Cotton plays harmonica and sings, and other instrumentation includes guitar, organ, bass, drums, and tambourine – all used in standard late 60s bluesy modes – that revivalist approach to the genre that helped shift its audiences in the 70s. Titles include "Soul Survivor", "Heart Attack", "Lovin Cup", "She's Murder", "Somethin You Got", "The Creeper", and "Down At Your Buryin". LP, Vinyl record album

CovenWitchcraft (red & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An insane record – and one of the strangest moments in pop music during the early 70s! Coven are best known to most folks for cutting the message-oriented, sweet folk tune "One Tin Soldier" – but here, they change course completely – and offer up a whole album dedicated to the dark arts and satanic pursuits – with a sonic quality that actually beats just about anything ever recorded by Anton La Vey! The record is ostensibly an "anti-witchcraft" album – but it actually comes off as being totally sincere – in a really great way. Some tunes are song-based – like "Coven In Charing Cross", "Black Sabbath", and "Choke Thirst Die" – but the album also has this really long "Satanic Mass", which even features the Lord's Prayer spoken backwards – completely creepy, in a Kenneth Anger magick sort of way! Patrick CowleyAfternooners ... CD
Dark Entries, Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
The continuing lost legacy of Patrick Cowley – the San Francisco 80s club maestro who made some famous records with Sylvester – but who also did a huge amount of underground sounds for porno films at the time! This set digs deep into that legacy – by featuring music that Cowley did for the 1982 film Afternooners, as well as a few other tracks from the time – material that's a great 80s extrapolation of the sorts of slinky funk you'd know from 70s porn! The sounds here are heavy on beats and keyboards – a much more slowed-down take on territory that Cowley explored on his club singles of the period – and the basslines are plenty heavy, and very seductive – as you might imagine, given the images they were used with on the screen. We should tell you that the package does include a few nude images inside – so be warned if you're offended by that sort of thing. Titles include "Love Come Set Me Free", "Big Shot", "Surfside Sex", "Hot Beach", "The Runner", "One Hot Afternoon", "Leather Bound", and "Bore & Stroke". CD

Creedence Clearwater RevivalBayou Country ... LP
Fantasy, 1969. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Tracks include the huge hits "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" – sitting nicely alongside even more compelling numbers like "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train", "Penthouse Pauper", and "Keep On Chooglin". The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". Creedence Clearwater Revival at the height of their powers – working in this amazing style that has roots in the swamp rock world of the late 50s, but which is produced with a gritty, almost trippy sort of quality – a mode that uses plenty of echo to really make this magic around the edges of the music! John Fogerty's vocals and guitar are razor-sharp throughout – and some of the album's lesser-known gems really help you situate the sound of the group past their hits – as a way of getting at the power they brought to the Cali scene when they first emerged. Joe Cuba SextetDiggin' The Most ... LP
Seeco, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A classic early groover from the great Joe Cuba – easily his best album of the pre-Latin soul years – and recorded in a tight small combo mode that was really shaking up the New York scene at the time! In advance of most other Latin leaders, Joe was already working here with both English and Spanish language vocalists – Cheo Feliciano and Jimmy Sabater – in a great mix of styles that has some early soul creeping into the mix, and which also features some heavy groovers that wonderfully distill the longer descarga style into some shorter lively numbers! Tracks have lots of great vibes – and titles include "Mercy", "Llegue", "Mambo Of The Times", "Siempre Sea", "El Hueso", and "Arinanara". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest soul music TV shows ever (and one that originated in Chicago, too!) – presented here in deep detail with loads of interesting stories and anecdotes too! The book's almost a more personal history of the show than a technical one – but that's OK with us, because it really gets at the tales behind those iconic images on the screen – and the all-pro presentation of Don Cornelius too. And, in addition to the main body of the book, the publication also includes this massive show-by-show list of appearances – for 37 seasons of Soul Train, including the later rerun years – with details on the performers and dates for each show, in a section that's over 50 pages in length! The book also includes some nice color images in the middle, and is 243 pages, softcover. Book

The set features three standout songs – "Hollywood Big Time" and "You've Changed The World For Me", sung by Yvonne Wilkins – and "Ballad", which is sung by composer Maurizio De Angelis himself – which are then mixed with instrumental numbers that are electric and keyboard-heavy, maybe more in line with Italian slasher/horror work of the period than you might expect!
