Brother ResistanceTonite Is De Night/Rapso Space Dub/Crucial Decision (92 version)/Nation Time ... 12-inch
Cree (Germany), Late 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Great grooves from Brother Reistance – tracks that are aimed at the dancefloor, but which also have a strong social message too! "Tonite Is De Night" is a cool call to action, set to a rhythm with tight tropical touches – and "Crucial Decision" is presented here in the 1992 version, with skittish rhythms topped with a nice steel drum keyboard part! "Rapso Space Dub" is unreleased, and a nicely spooky sort of groove – and "Nation Time" is a great late take on the tropical disco mode! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ George FaithTo Be A Lover (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mango/Cree (Germany), 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A match made in reggae heaven – the sweet vocals of the great George Faith, and the legendary production talents of Lee Scratch Perry – coming together here in a record that's overflowing with soul! The Perry production is great – never too over the top, but with just enough around the edges to keep things interesting – and to keep the record from sounding a fair bit different than more commercial or mainstream work of the time. The whole thing was recorded at the Black Ark studios, with help from The Mighty Diamonds and Meditations on backing vocals – and some nice lead guitar lines from Ernest Ranglin. Titles include an extended take on George's biggest number, "To Be A Lover (Have Mercy)" – plus sublime soul covers like "Midnight Hour/Ya Ya", "I've Got The Groove", and "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" – and smoking originals like "Opportunity", "So Fine", and "All The Love I've Got". ✨✧ Lancelot LayneBlow Way ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever collection we've seen to focus on the mighty talents of Lancelot Layne – an important talent on the Trinidad scene of the 70s – and an artist who really helped forge a unique hybrid of soul at the time! The music here isn't the usual Caribbean club groove – although Layne was a big inspiration on those later sounds – and instead, the music weaves together elements of older island styles, hipper 70s jazz and funk inflections, and some of the pride and power that were burning bright during this important generation of soul music. A number of cuts have very cool percussion – which creates an earthier undercurrent than you might expect – and we can honestly say that there's no easy comparisons we can make with this music, given its unique approach! Titles include "Bringin Off", "Kaiso For Mout Band", "Song For Music", "Carnival Drum Song", "Afro Dadian", "Ubawa", "In A Man's Life", "Chant", "Get Off The Radio", and "Free South Africa". 30 tracks in all! Andre Tanker FiveAfro Blossom West (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cree (Germany), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A jazzy combo from the Caribbean – led by a singer who also plays some really wonderful vibes! The rhythms are strong, with a definite dose of calypso in the mix – but the overall sound is much more in the jazz side of the spectrum, thanks to fluidly melodic sounds from Andre Tanker on vibes! Tanker also sings a bit too – but he's open to Latin modes and soul jazz styles, which makes him sound a lot different than anything you might expect from a late 60s album recorded in Trinidad! In fact, a few of these tunes even hit a boogaloo groove – which is perfect for the vibes – and others maybe echo some of the groovier Verve records modes of the time. Titles include "Party In The City", "Lena", "Swahili", "Ho Ba La La", "Homburg", "Do Me So La So So", and "Old Lady Walk A Mile". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCole Slaw Music Club – A Rhythm & Blues Revue ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Hard-grooving R&B from a host of hip talents from the 50s – music that's a bit blues, a bit jazz, and which goes past the obvious tunes you'd usually find on a collection like this! The cuts were chosen by the folks at the Cole Slaw Club in Germany – a specialist spot to step to old school grooves like these – and the sounds are a very cool mix of jukebox jive, groovy instrumentals, and some deeper-voiced tunes that really give the collection a lot of depth! The collection's not afraid to step between different genres in search of a swinging groove – in the best Bear Family/Cree Records style – and titles include "I Changed My Mind Jack" by Jo Ann Campbell, "Spider In The Web" by The Dooley Sisters, "Big John" by Richard Berry, "The Sneak" by Jimmy Oliver's Orchestra, "Salome Twist" by The Carroll Brothers, "Talk About Me" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Sugar Diabetes" by Eddie Banks, "Stolen Love" by Miss Lavell, "Sweet Little Love Like You" by Al Brown & The Tune Toppers, "Dance Of The Goony Bird" by Pat Miller, "Summertime" by Sylvia Mora, and "My Old Man" by Buddy & Ella Johnson. VariousDoing Our Thing – More Soul From Jamdown 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.98
A long-overdue second volume of the Soul From Jamdown series – issued 15 years after the first one, and maybe even more incredible overall! As before, the focus here is on Jamaican music that draws very direct inspiration from American soul – sometimes as cover versions of famous tracks, sometimes as answer songs to work from the US – but all set to very groovy reggae, rocksteady, and early dancehall rhythms! The vocals are wonderful – many of the singers really take inspiration from the best years of American deep soul and sweet soul – and bring a heartbreaking vibe to the lyrics – and while the earliest years of Jamaican soul has been well-documented, these later years are more unusual territory – and beautifully covered here. The package comes with a huge amount of notes, and also includes lots of images of the original records – and titles include "Too Late" by Augustus Pablo, "Cornbread Earl & Me" by Dillinger, "Supernatural Thing" by Richard Ace, "Breezin" by Willie Lindo, "Ain't That Loving You" by Hortense Ellis, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" by John Holt, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by Junior Byles, "Special Request To The Manhattans" by Phillip Frazer, "Thin Line Between Love & Hate" by BB Seaton, "Do Your Thing" by Glen Adams, and "Johnny Dollar" by Dave Barker. VariousSly & Robbie Present – Taxi Gang In Disco Mix Style 1977 to 1987 ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $13.99 21.99
A very cool side of the Sly & Robbie legend – a series of recordings the duo made with a range of different singers – all as Jamaican-styled remakes of American soul and club tracks from the 70s! The vibe here is definitely more reggae than disco – with a groove slowed down a lot more than the speed of Studio 54 – and the pair are really coming into their own as creative talents, working on the experience they gained for years on other folks' records – which really helps create the right sort of rhythms for these grooves. As you'd guess from the dates in the title, the set stretches into the digital reggae years – which turned out to be one of the most productive periods for Sly & Robbie – and titles include "Sexual Healing" by Jimmy Riley, "Show & Tell" by Ken Boothe, "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by Home T-4, "Inner City Blues" by Delroy Wilson, "Break Your Promise" by Barry Biggs, "You Must Believe In Me" by Junior Tamlins Moore, "Fever" by Marcia Griffiths, and "Rainy Night In Georgia" by Tinga Stewart. ✨✧ VariousStep Inside My Soul – Rare 70s & Modern Soul ... CD
Polydor/Cree (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stunning soul from the 70s – a host of rare tracks that mostly appeared as short-lived singles on Polydor – really lost to the shifting sands of time amidst the bigger acts on the label! The work here rivals the best of the best from the time – particularly the east coast groups who were getting bigger play on smaller indie labels – or some of the best Chicago acts of the time, who were helping to forge a new wave of modern soul! Production is never too slick, or uptight – and every single track is a mellow soul treasure that's brimming over with sweet vocals and laidback grooves – all hand-picked by legendary soul collector Bob Abrahamian, who also wrote some very detailed notes for the collection too. One of our favorite mellow soul collections ever – with tracks that include "You're Hardly Gone" by Tyrone Thomas, "The Goodbye Song" by Vaneese & Carolyn, "Step Inside My World" by The Reason Why, "Say You Will" by Mojoba, "All Alone By The Telephone" by The Checkmates Ltd, "We're Gonna Make It" by New World, "Sooner Or Later" by Alvarez, "Love Market" by JJ Williams, "Say Yeah" by Sam Dees, "I'm So Glad" by Prime Cut, and "I Just Want To Thank You" by Jules Johnson & The Dynamics. Titles include "Music Makes The World Go Round (Al Kent edit)" by Hamilton Brothers, "I Believe (Waxist edit)" by Zodiac featuring Denyse Plummer, "Beat The Drum (Keshav's jus now rework)" by Mansa Musa, and "All Nite Tonight (Nomad's reel to realness mix)" by Barbara Hernandez. 12-inch, Vinyl record

VariousTropical Trips Vol 1 – Life Is Better In The Tropics ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 9.99
Tropical club in many flavors – all pulled from the usually-expensive set of reissues done by the Cree Records label – presented here in a very nicely-priced package! Given that most Cree reissues are on 12" singles that push the $20 mark, the 16 tracks within come at a very big bargain – and the whole thing's a great introduction to the special world that's often documented by the label's tropical reissues – rare cuts from a time when the sounds of the New York dancefloors were filtering down to the West Indies – and when things were also changing a bit up north, due to a new wave of immigration to the US. Titles include "Umbaway" by Lancelot Layne, Lena" by The Andre Tanker Five, "Trinidad" by Papa Music, "Wajang Woman (Frankie Francis sofrito edit)" by Embryo, "Can't Stop Dancing" by Michael Boothman, & Kysofusion Band, "Remember Mama" by Sugar Minott, "Tabu" by Michael Boothman & Family Tree, "South African Reggae" by Cedric Brooks, "Rub A Dub Soka" by Merchant & The Network Riddum Band, and "Party Time" by Cinnamon Suns. ✨✧ Joshua AbramsSimultonality ... LP
Eremite, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Josh Abrams just keeps on getting better and better as the years go on – to the point where he's a leader who's emerging with one of the proudest, most righteous visions in jazz! Abrams has played for years in the company of others – and his contributions have always impressed us – but once he started to step into the spotlight as a leader, his voice has just continued to grow – where an album like this has Josh bringing together a really surprising array of talents from the Chicago scene, and creating a spiritual masterpiece that may well rival older classics on Impulse Records! Many of the tracks have a modal approach, which Josh drives along beautifully with his bass – and Abrams also plays guimbri and a small harp too – in a group that features Ari Brown on tenor, Emmett Kelly on guitar, Frank Rosaly on drums and percussion, Mikel Avery on drums, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and percussion, and Ben Boye on the wonderfully cool chromatic electric autoharp! Titles include "Sideways Fall", "St Cloud", "Maroon Dune", "Ophiuchs", and "2128 1/2". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AirtoFree/Identity/Promises Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

✨✧ Toshiko AkiyoshiToshiko At Top Of The Gate ... LP
Takt (Japan), 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best 60s albums ever from the legendary Toshiko Akioshi – a session recorded back in the US, with help from a quartet of American musicians! The album's got a strongly boppish feel overall – as Toshiko's piano comes into play with trumpet from Kenny Dorham, tenor and flute from Lew Tabackin, bass from Ron Carter, and drums from Mickey Roker – all working in a style that has a lot of dark corners and very subtle edges. Hints of Toshiko's later arranging styles creep into some of the tunes, but overall the work is relatively spontaneous and open – quite lyrical and points, especially on some of the original numbers that have some slightly Japanese themes alongside more conventional jazz progressions. Dorham's trumpet is obviously a great asset in a setting like this – and the record is one of his rarest appearances from the time. Titles include "The Night Song", "How Insensitive", "Phrygian Waterfall", "Let's Roll In Sake", and "Opus No Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Mose AllisonCreek Bank ... LP
Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
One of Mose's best early albums – even though he hardly gets a chance to sing on it! The album features some great work by Allison's trio of the time – Addison Farmer on bass and Ronnie Free on drums – simple piano-driven groovers, performed with a slight gutbuckety approach, and lots of sweet down home soul. Mose sings a bit on the classic "Seventh Son", a groover that's kept him going for years, and on the great tune "If You Live", which also has a similar feel. Other tracks include "Mule", "If I Didn't Care", "Moon & Cypress", and "Creek Bank". LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin Astley/Tony CrombieInternational Detective/Man From Interpol ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A pair of cool British TV soundtracks – both of which feature an action jazz style to rival the best early work of Henry Mancini for the television screen! First up is lost spy soundtrack work from the British composer Edwin Astley – best known for his work on The Saint and Danger Man, but also sounding pretty darn great on the earlier program International Detective! The feel here is similar to some of Astley's better-known work – a more dramatic take on the crime jazz used on American TV in the late 50s – one that retains much of the instrumental elements of the sound, especially the well-placed use of saxes – but which also uses larger orchestrations to flesh out the music nicely, creating a stronger, more cinematic feel. The set features a total of 21 tracks from this short-lived show – and titles include "International Detective", "Murder Strip", "Theme For Larceny", "Night Patrol", "The Badge", "Manhunt", "Shock Tactics", "Murder Chase", and "Concerto In Law". Next is Man From Interpol – one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre". CD

Brian Auger doesn't come full circle with his early work – and instead, he moves far forward – really soaring here in a tight trio setting, with even more jazz in the mix than on his classic recordings! The set's a great reminder that – despite all the keyboards, funk, and soul that Auger has given us over the decades – he's also a hell of a jazz musician too, and really jumps out with lively vibe throughout – echoing a bit of 60s soul jazz modes, but also sounding a lot less retro than you might expect! If anything, the set almost has Brian reinventing himself as a player who can groove, but in a lyrical way – as he served up nice takes on "Creepin", "Little Sunflower", "All Blues", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "For Dancers Only". A classic sexy soundtrack from the 70s – maybe the greatest thing ever to come from the pen of composer Pierre Bachelet, and a lot more rich than the images on the screen from Just Jaeckin's cinematic version of The Story Of O! Bachelet works in a mix of electric and acoustic styles – definitely inspired by some of the Italian sex scores of the time, but more spacious overall – so that the notes and rhythms really have time to entice and unfold before really hitting the right sort of sensual sound! The vibe is very spacey, with a dreamy rainy afternoon sound – with nice touches of electronics, and a good mellow feel – on titles that include "O'Apres", "O'She's A Lady", "O'Et L'Amour A Trois", "O'Et Sir Stephen", and "O'Et La Photo De Jacqueline". The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BlackbyrdsHappy Music – The Best Of The Blackbyrds ... CD
Fantasy, 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime funk by one of the greatest combos of the 70s – the mighty mighty Blackbyrds, a group who first came to prominence under the guidance of Donald Byrd, but quickly showed they had plenty to offer on their own! Back in the day, the sound of The Blackbyrds was really the sound of Fantasy Records – a newly sophisticated approach to jazz funk, helped out by Byrd and the Mizell Brothers – and fused into a groove that was hip, tight, but never too slick or smooth. The balance of instrumentation here is really amazing – sharp-edged playing like the best indie funk, but brought up to a level of perfection in the studio to match the advances going on at CTI, Kudu, or Blue Note. The collection does a great job of mixing the group's classics with some under-appreciated album gems – and it also features the previously unreleased tune "Feel Like A Kid" – alongside other numbers that include "Rock Creek Park", "Unfinished Business", "Do It Fluid", "One Eye Two Step", "Supernatural Feeling", "Walking In Rhythm", "Mysterious Vibes", "Enter In", "Gut Level", "Reggins", "Blackbyrds Theme", and "Hot Day Today". A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect! The album's as essential as any of the group's earlier albums – and it's filled with great versions of classics like "Supernatural Feeling", "Gut Level", "Walking In Rhythm", "Do It Fluid", "Rock Creek Park", and "Happy Music". Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! King Britt presents Sylk 130Re-Members Only ... CD
Ovum/Six Degrees, 2001. Used ... $1.99
The latest from this hip producer, and an album that's got a cool sound that's 2 parts underground soul, and 3 parts mid 80s R&B – complete with guest appearances by Alison Moyet, Martin Fry, Kathy Sledge, Alma Horton, Grover Washington Jr, and Trugoy of De La Soul. In a way, this is the kind of modern R&B album that we always looked for back in the 80s, but rarely found put together so well. King Britt's production is enough to hold together the mad vision of the set – and the melange of guest stars comes out sounding remarkably coherent in the end. Brooks had blown on other Blue Note sessions before, but here, working as a leader, his sound is tremendous – vaguely to the left of center of some of his other tenor counterparts on the label, but with an equally impeccable approach to soul and rhythm. Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that definitely lives up to the promise of its cover – especially the creepy image of a skeleton shooting up on the front! Bulbous Creation hail from the same Kansas scene documented on Numero's Cavern Sound compilation – but unlike some of the other groups, they've got more than enough going on to offer up a full album here – a really heady, tripped-out batch of music that may well be some of the weirdest ever recorded in that legendary cave in Missouri! The production is almost a bit muddy at times – or maybe it's the way the instruments are performed – which creates this even more sinister feel to the whole thing – as if you've surprised the group during a very private moment, or stumbled upon them performing some ritual in the woods! The song titles say an awful lot about the record, too – and include "Satan", "Hooked", "Under The Black Sun", "Fever Machine Man", and "End Of The Page". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! Ric Cartey may not be the biggest name in late 50s rockabilly – but man, does he sure sound great on this set – the first-ever collection to bring together Cartey's classic singles for RCA, plus a wealth of other rare 45s too! Cartey hails from Atlanta, and recorded a bit for that city's famous NRC indie – but despite the setting, Ric's got a great romping sound that's definitely all his own – maybe less hillbilly than some of his contemporaries of the period, and always ready to romp out with a hard-wailing groove! Production on most of these numbers is great – the kind of spare, stark, echoey vibe that makes already-great elements sound even cooler – and the whole package features a huge booklet of notes that tell the tale of Ric's overlooked career in music. Titles include "Crying Good Bye", "Mellow Down Easy", "Oooh Eee", "Poor Me", "Go On Fool", "Scratchin On My Screen", "To Love", "Leave Me Loose", "Born To Love One Woman", "I Wancha To Know", and "Let Me Tell You About Love" – and CD also features 11 more bonus tracks related to the collection, by Sonny James, The Jiv-A-Tones, Charlie Broome, Bobby Wilson, and Chuck Atha. One of the darkest soundtracks we've ever heard from Stelvio Cipriani – a set that has some of the sweeter, more erotic touches of his other 70s work – but which also features a colder, electronic undercurrent as well – a very creepy style that's very much in the Halloween genre of film scoring! Cipriani's approach here is somewhat different than that of his Italian contemporaries – a bit less iconic, and willing to change things up a bit from time to time. But there's also some undeniably strong themes that run through the music too – including one swirling bit of dark analogue synth that almost feels as if it was pulled from some early 80s British industrial album. Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Titles include "Iyo Re", "Elelemi", "Ere Yon", "Re Hese", "It's All For You", "Sogio", and "Gossiper Scandal Monger". CD

Excellent work from Nat King Cole – a set of rare television performances that offer up a much greater side of his charms than some of his studio records for Capitol! The fidelity on most tracks is pretty great – and many numbers feature Nat talking a bit as he introduces the songs, with that easygoing approach that made him as charming a talent on the screen as he was on the radio. The bulk of the tracks are from Nat's short-lived show that ran in 1957 – and the rest are from the 1963 Australian Mobil Limb TV Show – an unusual special. Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A brilliant large ensemble work from Ornette Coleman – ambitious material recorded with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Prestige, 1957/1958. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Strong work – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreet album. The 2LP set is from the mid 70s – and combines tracks originally issued on the albums Lush Life and Coltrane. Side one of Lush Life features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody". Coltrane is a classic set for Prestige – a set of blowing session tracks with Trane in the lead, featuring players like Sahib Shihab, Mal Waldron, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Al Heath. Trane's in great form here – even though the overall set's a bit less structured than some of his later albums – and his tone and solo approach are already stepping out from the rest of the pack with great vigor! A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. 80s magic from Con Funk Shun – a pair of albums back to back! Fever is one of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked". Electric Lady is a relatively beat-heavy set from Con Funk Shun – one that has them moving into some of the same spaces as their ensemble funk contemporaries, and using a bit more programmed rhythms than before! Given their pedigree with grooves, the group still manages to keep things soulful – and the album's still got the group at their funky best – and is definitely not in the vein of some of the more commercial work of this type from the mid 80s. Lead vocals are mostly by Michael Cooper, and titles include "Turn The Music Up", "Electric Lady", "Don't Go", "Circle Of Love", "Pretty Lady", "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do", and "I'm Leaving Baby". Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". The rest of the group features Ben Allison on bass and Mark Ferber on drums – and titles include "Precious Souls", "Telescope", "Big Pictures", "This Should Be Fun", "For Morgan", and "Restless Willow". CovenWitchcraft ... LP
Mercury, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
An insane record – and one of the strangest moments in pop music during the early 70s! Coven are best known to most folks for cutting the message-oriented, sweet folk tune "One Tin Soldier" – but here, they change course completely – and offer up a whole album dedicated to the dark arts and satanic pursuits – with a sonic quality that actually beats just about anything ever recorded by Anton La Vey! The record is ostensibly an "anti-witchcraft" album – but it actually comes off as being totally sincere – in a really great way. Some tunes are song-based – like "Coven In Charing Cross", "Black Sabbath", and "Choke Thirst Die" – but the album also has this really long "Satanic Mass", which even features the Lord's Prayer spoken backwards – completely creepy, in a Kenneth Anger magick sort of way! Patrick CowleyAfternooners ... LP
Dark Entries, Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $20.99
The continuing lost legacy of Patrick Cowley – the San Francisco 80s club maestro who made some famous records with Sylvester – but who also did a huge amount of underground sounds for porno films at the time! This set digs deep into that legacy – by featuring music that Cowley did for the 1982 film Afternooners, as well as a few other tracks from the time – material that's a great 80s extrapolation of the sorts of slinky funk you'd know from 70s porn! The sounds here are heavy on beats and keyboards – a much more slowed-down take on territory that Cowley explored on his club singles of the period – and the basslines are plenty heavy, and very seductive – as you might imagine, given the images they were used with on the screen. We should tell you that the package does include a few nude images inside – so be warned if you're offended by that sort of thing. Titles include "Love Come Set Me Free", "Big Shot", "Surfside Sex", "Hot Beach", "The Runner", "One Hot Afternoon", "Leather Bound", and "Bore & Stroke". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Tracks include the huge hits "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" – sitting nicely alongside even more compelling numbers like "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train", "Penthouse Pauper", and "Keep On Chooglin". Fantasy, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". The set features a very long jamming take on "Suzie Q" – plus "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", "I Put A Spell On You", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Keep On Chooglin", "Commotion", and "Bootleg". It's hard to get any more classic than this for Creedence Clearwater Revival – as this legendary late 60s album is definitely the place where it all comes together! The pairing of John Fogerty's lead guitar and the scratching rhythm guitar of brother Tom really sounds wonderful here – driven on by tight bass and drums, but always with this rootsy edge that stretches from the Bay Area scene way down to the bayou! One of the greatest soul music TV shows ever (and one that originated in Chicago, too!) – presented here in deep detail with loads of interesting stories and anecdotes too! The book's almost a more personal history of the show than a technical one – but that's OK with us, because it really gets at the tales behind those iconic images on the screen – and the all-pro presentation of Don Cornelius too. And, in addition to the main body of the book, the publication also includes this massive show-by-show list of appearances – for 37 seasons of Soul Train, including the later rerun years – with details on the performers and dates for each show, in a section that's over 50 pages in length! The book also includes some nice color images in the middle, and is 243 pages, softcover. Book

Digitmovies (Italy), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautifully sensitive soundtrack for this early film from the team of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill – very different than most of the other western music of the time – which is a fitting accompaniment to the unique actions of the pair onscreen! There's a fair bit of acoustic guitar in the instrumentation, used in ways that are sometimes warmer and more sentimental than you'd expect – played with a subtle sort of character that really comes through in this well-done reissue of the music – and which gets even better when groovier elements on piano or horns come into the mix. Things build nicely as the set moves on, with a very vivid feel throughout – and titles include "Remember", "Il Carro Al Fiume", "Assalto Alla Diligenza", "Ranch Di Parker", "Trinity E Bambino A San Jose", and "Trinity Stand Tall". Great reissue version – with excellent sound, notes in Italian and English, and even some vocal songs sung by Gene Roman. LP, Vinyl record album

A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa".
