BandBand (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) ... CD
Capitol/Mobile Fidelity, 1969. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". CD

John Barry & OthersDrumbeat ... CD
Silva Screen (UK), Late 50s. Used ... $11.99
Really early sounds from the great John Barry – a huge amount of tracks recorded with his combo for the Drumbeat TV show in the UK! The program had a strong focus on the emerging rock and roll sounds of the late 50s – and the John Barry Seven were a perfect group to provide musical accompaniment – professional enough to handle the gig in just the right way, but youthful enough to come up with plenty of sharp-edged sounds! The instrumentation's often heavy on guitar, but features some trumpet lines from Barry too – and although the set features some instrumentals by the group, there's also a lot of vocal numbers – with singers who include Derry Hart, Adam Faith, Bob Miller, Sylvia Sands, Roy Young, Vince Eager, and others. 40 tracks in all – including "Mad Mab", "Bees Knees", "Don't Leave Me", "Slippin & Slidin", "Rockin Sandy", "Get Happy", "Italian Style", "Beatnik", "Catwalk", "I Go Ape", "Shame On You Miss Johnson", and "Buzzin". King Britt presents Sylk 130Re-Members Only ... CD
Ovum/Six Degrees, 2001. Used ... $0.99
The latest from this hip producer, and an album that's got a cool sound that's 2 parts underground soul, and 3 parts mid 80s R&B – complete with guest appearances by Alison Moyet, Martin Fry, Kathy Sledge, Alma Horton, Grover Washington Jr, and Trugoy of De La Soul. In a way, this is the kind of modern R&B album that we always looked for back in the 80s, but rarely found put together so well. King Britt's production is enough to hold together the mad vision of the set – and the melange of guest stars comes out sounding remarkably coherent in the end. Titles include "Cobbs Creek", "Skipping Stones", "One & Only", "Romeo's Fate", "Incident On A Couch", "All The Way Live", "'84 Fantastik", and "Beauty Of Machines". CD

John ColtraneLush Life ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957/1958. Used ... $1.99
Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody". CD

Gil EvansBlues In Orbit (aka Gil Evans) ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1969. Used ... $9.99
A great record – and on that hardly ever shows up on the radar screen of Gil's career! The session was recorded with a very hip group that includes Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Elvin Jones and Alphonze Mouzon on drums, Joe Beck on electric guitar, and Herb Bushler on Fender bass. The sound is a bit electric, but is touched with Evans' far-reaching arranging style, so that it lapses into none of the cliches you might expect. Harper is a treat, as always, and he offers up the original composition "Thoroughbred", one of the nicest on the record. "Blues In Orbit", "Variation On The Misery", "Proclamation", and "Spaced". This is a 1981 repackaging of an album that was originally issued on Apex under the title Gil Evans. CD

Marcello GiombiniE Tornato Sabata – Hai Chiuso Un'Altra Volta (Return Of Sabata) ... CD
Veritano (Japan), 1972. Used ... $24.99
The return of Lee Van Cleef's Sabata – presented here in a soundtrack that's even groovier than the music from the first film! The title tune is especially wonderful – a killer soundtrack groove with a mix of English lyrics and scatting vocals from I Cantori Moderni – easily one of the grooviest tunes the group ever recorded! Other tunes have a groovy undercurrent too – romping basslines and piano bits, and weird strings and sounds folded together beautifully – making for music that's as compelling as the movie, even when heard far away from the images on the screen. This reissue includes a few previously unreleased bonus tracks – making for 18 tracks in all! CD

Jazz ChroniclesJazz Chronicles ... CD
Futuristica (UK), 2009. Used ... $1.99
More beats than straight jazz, but pretty great overall – a set that really reminds us of that key 90s moment when real jazz instrumentation first started creeping into the work of beatmakers! Simon S is at the head of the project – handling most beats and instrumentation, often with a spare, soundscapey feel that really takes us back to the glorious early years of Mo Wax – or perhaps the initial glimmer of genius we heard from Kruder & Dorfmeister. There's a bit of guest vibes, sax, and flute at times – but most of the main jazzy bits are from keyboards and piano. Titles include "One For Joe", "Land", "Maybe", "Time For", "Bologna", "J Bounce", "CM Vibe", and "Thoughts Of You". CD

Albert KingLive Wire/Blues Power (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Stax/Mobile Fidelity, 1968. Used ... $24.99
Plenty of blues power here – a searing live set recorded by Albert King before a very enthusiastic crowd at the Fillmore in the late 60s! The album's filled with lots of King's sharp-edged guitar lines – searing with a bit more soul than your usual bluesman, possibly in part because the backing group's so tight! At times, there's almost a bit of funk in the mix – given that the rhythm section romps it up pretty strongly – and the record stands nicely apart from some of the blues cliches that were creeping into the mix at the time. Titles include the 10 minute workout "Blues Power" – plus "Watermelon Man", "Night Stomp", "Blues At Sunrise", "Please Love Me", and "Look Out". CD

✨✧ Lee KonitzTranquility (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by Lee Konitz – a sublime 50s treasure we've loved for years! The session's the most perfect realization of the compacted angular cool style that he was reaching for in the 50s – and each note is crafted with a precision and intensity that you'll be hard pressed to find on other albums from the time, even others of his that are quite excellent. Guitarist Billy Bauer is fantastic, and his playing acts like these tiny little spider webs to support Konitz's creepingly exploratory solos – held together magically by some very slight rhythmic accompaniment from the team of Henry Grimes on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Titles include "Stephanie", "Sunday", "Jonquil", "Lennie Bird" and more. CD

LabelleChameleon ... CD
Epic, 1976. Used ... $13.99
A stone classic in the genre of bad-rapping female soul – and one of the key albums cut by the trio of Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash! The arrangements and production are handled by David Rubinson, who gives the set a nicely polished feel that gets a bit past some of the slight cliches that had been creeping into the girls work – a style that shows them equally well skilled at mellower numbers than at the funkier rockier tunes that were their more familiar stock in trade. Titles include "Come Into My Life", "A Man In A Trenchcoat (Voodoo)", "Get You Something New", "Going Down Makes Me Shiver", "Gypsy Moths", and "Who's Watching The Watcher?". CD

✨✧ Milton NascimentoCourage ... CD
A&M, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Extremely early work from the great Milton Nascimento – one of his first albums ever, and oddly recorded in America, not Brazil! The set was done in the A&M studios, with production by Creed Taylor – but has a spacious, soulful sound that's a lot like Milton's first few records from Brazil. The album is a huge meeting of talents – and features Herbie Hancock and Deodato on keyboards, plus a host of excellent other jazz players who give Milton's music a nice lyrical edge. The record features that classic Nasicmento mix of soulful vocals, baroque songwriting, and incredible jazz-tinged arrangements – and a few tracks have lyrics in English, too! Tracks include classics like "Bridges", "Vera Cruz", and "Gira Girou" – plus "Tres Pontas", "Rio Vermelho", and "Catavento". CD

Max RichterHenry May Long ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon, 2017. Used ... $6.99
Sublime soundtrack material from Max Richter – but work that dovetails perfectly with some of his more "serious" albums on Deutsche Grammophon! The music features Richter on piano, alongside two cellos, a violin, and viola – but sounding completely unlike piano and strings – as the instruments are all used in that flowing, open, spacious style that Max his brought to other compositions – melodic and atmospheric at the same time, yet rich in feeling and tone, and never sleepy at all! Richter's a fantastic minimalist – but one who's completely different than the generation of Steve Reich and Philip Glass – although, like Glass, his compositional techniques are turning out to be a perfect accompaniment to images on a screen. Titles include "Stairs Abyss Starlight", "Ocean House Mirror", "Interior Horses", "The Young Mariner", "Powder Pills Truth", "Whale Window Hotel 1", and "Dinner & The Ship Of Dreams". CD

Mastercuts (UK), 1970s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The title certainly gets this one right – as the 12 track set is overflowing with classic funk all the way through – tracks that bubbled underground in the 70s, rocked the rare groove scene in the 80s, and which are still being appreciated today! Great stuff all around – and tracks include "NT" by Kool & The Gang, "Stone To The Bone" by James Brown, "Pick Up The Pieces" by Average White Band, "Fencewalk" by Mandrill, "Who Is He And What Is He To You" by Creative Source, "Wicki Wacky" by Fatback, "For The Love Of Money" by the O'Jays, "Blow Your Head" by The JBs, "Pusherman" by Curtis Mayfield, "Rock Creek Park" by The Blackbyrds, and "Gimme Some More" by The JBs. Fat City (UK), 1999. Used ... $4.99
Manchester has got to be one of the hippest cities on earth – or at least it would seem that way, because the folks at the city's Fat City record shop keep turning out excellent funky compilations like this one! The set's like the best ones on the label in the past – a genre-blending mixture of hip hop, classic funk, and oddball grooves from unusual sources. All very well put together – with an eye for quality, and those elusive tunes that the blokes at Fat City always get asked for across the counter! Titles include "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More" by Richard McDonald, "Wild & Peaceful (Kenny Dope mix)" by Incognito, "The Spectacle (Mr Scruff rmx)" by Yam Yam, "Jerk Anthem" by Five Deez, "Sure Shot Goin On (Danmass 12" mix)" by Multiscreen, "Make Way For The Originals" by Izit, "I Can Break It Down" by Deadbeats, "Drop The Beat" by Martin Brew, "Underground Run" by People Under The Stairs, "Strollin" by Sunburst Band, and "Winterland" by Bamboo Soul. ✨✧ Black SabbathParanoid (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1971. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

✨✧ Ornette ColemanSkies Of America ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant large ensemble work from Ornette Coleman – ambitious material recorded with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Tracks include "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", and "The Artist In America". CD

✨✧ Steve KhanPublic Access/Headline/Crossings ... CD
GRP/BGO (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of later albums from a guitarist who first rose to fame in the 70s! First up is Public Access – a record that's got a slightly goofy cover, but a sound that's much richer than you might expect – thanks in part to great work on the album from percussionist Manolo Badrena! Some of the music here echoes the earlier fusion of guitarist Steve Khan – but other tunes bring in some warmer, Brazilian-y elements – including a bit of vocalization from Badrena, with occasional chorus work from Lani Groves and Vivian Cherry. The rest of the group features frequent partner Anthony Jackson on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and titles include "Sise", "Silent Screen", "Mambosa", "Butane Elvin", "Botero People, and "Kamarica". The set then follows with three long tracks from Headline – a record that has guitarist Steve Khan almost returning to straight small combo work – although still with some of the wider colors of the fusion modes he first unleashed in the 70s! The album's got a tight core group here – Khan on guitar, Anthony Jackson on bass, Dennis Chambers on drums, and Manolo Badrena on percussion – and Chambers' drum performance is maybe more direct and swinging than some of Khan's previous drummers, which works especially well on the album's versions of songs by Joe Henderson and Ornette Coleman! Titles include "Caribbean Fire Dance", "All Or Nothing At All", and "Turnaround". Last up is Crossings – a great title for this set from guitarist Steve Khan – as the crossings here reflect Steve's increasing ear towards other cultures and rhythms in his music as the years moved on – even while still keeping things in a relatively fusion-based mode! Steve's got plenty of those warm colors that he always brought to his playing – working with a tight lineup that includes bassist Anthony Jackson, drummer Dennis Chambers, percussionist Manolo Badrena, and tenorist Michael Brecker. Titles include "Descarga Khanalonious", "Melancholee", "Inner Urge", "Capricorn", "What I'm Said", "Pee Wee", and "Think Of One". CD

Seasonal, largely instrumental freshness from Oddisee for the always interesting Mello Music Group label – a pretty ambitious set that's groups tracks by season. It may indeed be music for Autumn, Spring, Summer and Winter, but we're thinking it'll sound good for years to come. Includes "The Supplier", "Almost A Year Since", "Theatre", "Tell The Truth", "In Your Eyes", "Silgo Creek", "The Blooming", "I'm From PG", "Frostbit", "Winds From The North", "It's Over" and more. ✨✧ Paul QuinichetteKid From Denver – Complete Dawn Sessions ... CD
Dawn/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brilliant work from the "Vice Pres" – tenorist Paul Quinichette, stepping out here in one the best of of his all-too-few sessions as a leader! Paul's tone is amazing throughout – very much on a par with that of Ben Webster or Coleman Hawkins, and proof that his admission to the jazz "executive branch" in the 50s was well deserved. The tunes are shortish, but very swinging – and Quinichette's tenor work dominates in a group that also includes Nat Pierce, Henry Coker, Thad Jones, Freddie Green, and Joe Newman. There's a Basie-esque swing overall – but the final result is miles from Basie, and has a very different vibe overall. Titles include "Big Deal", "Happy Feeling", "Pardon The Blues Please", "Start Here", and "The Kid From Denver". Plus, this CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – 12 extra tunes, all pulled from exclusive sessions for various Jazzville compilations! The overall sound is similar to the full album – although the players differ a bit – and titles include "Colonel Hodge", "I Never Knew", "The Creeper", "Big George", "Suitcase", and "Minor Scene". CD

✨✧ Logan RichardsonShift ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Blue Note debut of alto saxophonist Logan Richardson – an up-and-coming player you might know from a few previous records, or his work with Jason Moran, Gerald Clayton, or the Next Collective! This set may well surpass all those other projects, though – as Richardson's really emerging as a visionary in his own right – leading a creative quintet here that features strong piano and Fender Rhodes from Moran, guitars from Pat Metheny, and drums from Nasheet Waits – a lineup that might well intimidate a weaker player, but which really seems to set Richardson on fire! The presence of both Metheny and Moran is great – and gives the music this electric vibe that also retains an edge – one that makes for a nice counterpart to Logan's lines on alto, and which seems to underscore some of their darker qualities too. Production and performance are pretty straightforward, which is a further strength of the set – and titles are mostly originals – save for a version of Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven". Original tracks include "Time", "Alone", "Imagine", "Creeper", "Mind Free", and "In Your Next Life". CD

✨✧ CheSexy 70 – Music Inspired By The Brazilian Erotic Movies Of The 70s ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record with a gimmick – but one that we really really like! The set's a tribute to the sounds of older Brazilian porn movies, done in a style that's really faithful to the original sound of the 70s – a mode that's never too kitschy, never just easy funk – but really well-done work with a tremendously groovy sound! Producer Che originally wanted to make a compilation of the best music from 70s Brazilian pornochanchadas, but found that the source material was in such bad shape that he couldn't do the job right – so he headed into the studio with a key group of musicians who really get the original sound of the films, and who revel here in a hiply-jazzy take on older grooves! We should say that the overall sound here is more jazzy and bossa-based than some of the skunkier funk of 70s US porno – a bit warmer, with some echoes of Italian soundtrack work of the same period – but still a gritty enough groove to fit the nasty scenes going on screen! Instrumentation includes lots of keyboards and vibes, and the album's a really great one that could easily be passed off as a 70s original – but which we like even more for its honesty about its intentions. Titles include "Desejos Ardentes", "A Bailonia De David", "Helena X Aldine", "Suite Para Pereio", "Sala Especial", "Mulher Objeto", "Simplesmente Gloria", "Vera A Diaba Loira", "Pixoxo Em Lua De Mel", and "A Jeitosa Do Morro". ✨✧ Astrud GilbertoGirl From Ipanema ... CD
Synergy, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual record for Astrud Gilberto – one that has her updating her older sound by working with Philly producer Vince Montana! The approach blends Montana's Philly club in with Astrud's gently bossa-schooled vocals – in a way that glides along nicely and offers the same sort of disco-fied version of styles that were showing up in other genres at the time. The strength, though, is that since Astrud had already cut a funkier album earlier in the 70s for Perception, she was a bit better prepared to handle the session than you might guess – and the overall arrangements still have some stylistic links back to her older work. Arrangements are by Vince Montana, Don Sebesky, and Al Gorgoni – and titles include "Black Magic", "Meu Piao", "All I've Got", "Love For Sale", and the creepy "Puppy Song"! CD

✨✧ Kenny RankinInside Kenny Rankin (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Little David/Valley (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pure 70s genius from Kenny Rankin – and an album that's filled with beautifully compressed tunes that squeeze together jazz and soul into a unique sound that's Kenny's own! There's a gentleness to the set that's extremely refreshing – a floating quality to the vocals that's a bit like that of Tim Buckley, but never as overdone as in Buckley's work – and which Kenny takes to a whole new level here with a breezy scatting sort of approach. Gary Burton plays some great vibes on some of the album's best tracks, and titles include "Inside", "Lost Up In Lovin You", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Up From The Skies", "The Feeling", "Marie", "You", and a great cover of "Creepin".
