Brother ResistanceTonite Is De Night/Rapso Space Dub/Crucial Decision (92 version)/Nation Time ... 12-inch
Cree (Germany), Late 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Great grooves from Brother Reistance – tracks that are aimed at the dancefloor, but which also have a strong social message too! "Tonite Is De Night" is a cool call to action, set to a rhythm with tight tropical touches – and "Crucial Decision" is presented here in the 1992 version, with skittish rhythms topped with a nice steel drum keyboard part! "Rapso Space Dub" is unreleased, and a nicely spooky sort of groove – and "Nation Time" is a great late take on the tropical disco mode! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Andre Tanker FiveAfro Blossom West (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cree (Germany), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A jazzy combo from the Caribbean – led by a singer who also plays some really wonderful vibes! The rhythms are strong, with a definite dose of calypso in the mix – but the overall sound is much more in the jazz side of the spectrum, thanks to fluidly melodic sounds from Andre Tanker on vibes! Tanker also sings a bit too – but he's open to Latin modes and soul jazz styles, which makes him sound a lot different than anything you might expect from a late 60s album recorded in Trinidad! In fact, a few of these tunes even hit a boogaloo groove – which is perfect for the vibes – and others maybe echo some of the groovier Verve records modes of the time. Titles include "Party In The City", "Lena", "Swahili", "Ho Ba La La", "Homburg", "Do Me So La So So", and "Old Lady Walk A Mile". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCole Slaw Music Club – A Rhythm & Blues Revue ... CD
Cree (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Hard-grooving R&B from a host of hip talents from the 50s – music that's a bit blues, a bit jazz, and which goes past the obvious tunes you'd usually find on a collection like this! The cuts were chosen by the folks at the Cole Slaw Club in Germany – a specialist spot to step to old school grooves like these – and the sounds are a very cool mix of jukebox jive, groovy instrumentals, and some deeper-voiced tunes that really give the collection a lot of depth! The collection's not afraid to step between different genres in search of a swinging groove – in the best Bear Family/Cree Records style – and titles include "I Changed My Mind Jack" by Jo Ann Campbell, "Spider In The Web" by The Dooley Sisters, "Big John" by Richard Berry, "The Sneak" by Jimmy Oliver's Orchestra, "Salome Twist" by The Carroll Brothers, "Talk About Me" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Sugar Diabetes" by Eddie Banks, "Stolen Love" by Miss Lavell, "Sweet Little Love Like You" by Al Brown & The Tune Toppers, "Dance Of The Goony Bird" by Pat Miller, "Summertime" by Sylvia Mora, and "My Old Man" by Buddy & Ella Johnson. VariousDoing Our Thing – More Soul From Jamdown 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $9.99
A long-overdue second volume of the Soul From Jamdown series – issued 15 years after the first one, and maybe even more incredible overall! As before, the focus here is on Jamaican music that draws very direct inspiration from American soul – sometimes as cover versions of famous tracks, sometimes as answer songs to work from the US – but all set to very groovy reggae, rocksteady, and early dancehall rhythms! The vocals are wonderful – many of the singers really take inspiration from the best years of American deep soul and sweet soul – and bring a heartbreaking vibe to the lyrics – and while the earliest years of Jamaican soul has been well-documented, these later years are more unusual territory – and beautifully covered here. The package comes with a huge amount of notes, and also includes lots of images of the original records – and titles include "Too Late" by Augustus Pablo, "Cornbread Earl & Me" by Dillinger, "Supernatural Thing" by Richard Ace, "Breezin" by Willie Lindo, "Ain't That Loving You" by Hortense Ellis, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" by John Holt, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by Junior Byles, "Special Request To The Manhattans" by Phillip Frazer, "Thin Line Between Love & Hate" by BB Seaton, "Do Your Thing" by Glen Adams, and "Johnny Dollar" by Dave Barker. Cree (Germany), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $13.99 21.99
A very cool side of the Sly & Robbie legend – a series of recordings the duo made with a range of different singers – all as Jamaican-styled remakes of American soul and club tracks from the 70s! The vibe here is definitely more reggae than disco – with a groove slowed down a lot more than the speed of Studio 54 – and the pair are really coming into their own as creative talents, working on the experience they gained for years on other folks' records – which really helps create the right sort of rhythms for these grooves. As you'd guess from the dates in the title, the set stretches into the digital reggae years – which turned out to be one of the most productive periods for Sly & Robbie – and titles include "Sexual Healing" by Jimmy Riley, "Show & Tell" by Ken Boothe, "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by Home T-4, "Inner City Blues" by Delroy Wilson, "Break Your Promise" by Barry Biggs, "You Must Believe In Me" by Junior Tamlins Moore, "Fever" by Marcia Griffiths, and "Rainy Night In Georgia" by Tinga Stewart. ✨✧ Ben MolatziNo Way To Go (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cree (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The rough-cut image on the front cover is a perfect accompaniment to the music on the disc – the first-ever issue of recordings made by Namibian guitarist/singer Ben Molatzi – tracks recorded both in the studio and out in the field, with a wonderfully stripped-down sound overall! Molatzi's got a quality that's really timeless, and very different than most other music coming out of the southern side of Africa during the early 80s – acoustic guitar as the only instrumentation, but neither folksy, nor old school West African at all – instead maybe used as this way of inflecting Ben's really beautiful, spiritual vocal approach – a mode of vocalizing that sometimes takes wordless directions, or which is echoed by whistling and other vocal effects too. The music is impossible to describe in easy words, but is instantly powerful and captivating – on titles that include "Aesa Khaure", "Tae E Ta Go Di", "Danisa Sam", "Sida Lhu", "Gamrona Om", "Ausi Nama", "Dama Hao", "DRMD", and "Ben's Fluit Iiedjie". Cree (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tropical club in many flavors – all pulled from the usually-expensive set of reissues done by the Cree Records label – presented here in a very nicely-priced package! Given that most Cree reissues are on 12" singles that push the $20 mark, the 16 tracks within come at a very big bargain – and the whole thing's a great introduction to the special world that's often documented by the label's tropical reissues – rare cuts from a time when the sounds of the New York dancefloors were filtering down to the West Indies – and when things were also changing a bit up north, due to a new wave of immigration to the US. Titles include "Umbaway" by Lancelot Layne, Lena" by The Andre Tanker Five, "Trinidad" by Papa Music, "Wajang Woman (Frankie Francis sofrito edit)" by Embryo, "Can't Stop Dancing" by Michael Boothman, & Kysofusion Band, "Remember Mama" by Sugar Minott, "Tabu" by Michael Boothman & Family Tree, "South African Reggae" by Cedric Brooks, "Rub A Dub Soka" by Merchant & The Network Riddum Band, and "Party Time" by Cinnamon Suns. ✨✧ Lancelot LayneBlow Way ... CD
Cree (Germany), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever collection we've seen to focus on the mighty talents of Lancelot Layne – an important talent on the Trinidad scene of the 70s – and an artist who really helped forge a unique hybrid of soul at the time! The music here isn't the usual Caribbean club groove – although Layne was a big inspiration on those later sounds – and instead, the music weaves together elements of older island styles, hipper 70s jazz and funk inflections, and some of the pride and power that were burning bright during this important generation of soul music. A number of cuts have very cool percussion – which creates an earthier undercurrent than you might expect – and we can honestly say that there's no easy comparisons we can make with this music, given its unique approach! Titles include "Bringin Off", "Kaiso For Mout Band", "Song For Music", "Carnival Drum Song", "Afro Dadian", "Ubawa", "In A Man's Life", "Chant", "Get Off The Radio", and "Free South Africa". 30 tracks in all! Fantasy, 1969. Used ... $4.99
Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Tracks include the huge hits "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary" – sitting nicely alongside even more compelling numbers like "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train", "Penthouse Pauper", and "Keep On Chooglin". Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

Steve SwallowHome – Music By Steve Swallow To Poems By Robert Creeley ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Kuhn is also in the group on piano, and other musicians include David Liebman on saxes, Lyle Mays on keyboards, and Bob Moses on drums – all working under the superb leadership of bassist Steve Swallow – who really outdid himself with the depth of feeling in this project. Titles include "Colors", "In The Fall", "She Was Young", "Some Echoes", "Ice Cream", and "You Didn't Think". CD

The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AcanthusLe Frisson Des Vampires ... CD
Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A strange, eerie psychedelia and prog steeped soundtrack to the Jean Rollins French vampire film Le Frisson Des Vampires – played by the group Acanthus – a great little set of evocative, stripped down macabre instrumentals and trippy bits of dialogue! Finders Keepers describes the sound by comparing it to lynchpin combos of early prog as affected by "a 1000 year old acid infused blood transfusion", and guess what – that's perfect! Guitar melodies spun very loosely and eerily rolling along with improved bits and creepy sound sound effects – but it never veers into shlocky horror movie music, it's psych-steeped instrumental rock, played in a spooky style. The music is great, and the bits of dialogue (in English) is totally priceless! Includes Funerailles Des Vampires", "Le Frisson Des Vampires", "La Chateau", "Wedding Party (Angoisse Temporelle)", "Occupied Clock", "Who Are You?", "Blood-Cups", "Isabelles Demise", "Night Excursion", "Isa's Ceremony", "Flightless Bird", "The Shiver Of The Vampires", "Envol Vers La Folie" and more. 27 tracks in all – the entire, previously unreleased soundtrack! AirtoFree ... LP
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". LP, Vinyl record album

Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Mose AllisonDown Home Piano ... LP
Prestige, 1958. Very Good ... $11.99
An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've only heard Allison's better-known numbers with singing, you'll really be floored here at his skills as an instrumentalist – particularly in the way he manages to play the piano with deep-down roots, yet also hit some stunningly modern tones as well! Accompaniment is by Addison Farmer on bass, plus either Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Dinner On The Ground", "Crepuscular Air", "Mule", "Creek Bank", "Town", "Devil In The Cane Field", "The Minstrels", "Moon & Cypress", "Carnival", and "Mojo Woman". Edwin Astley/Tony CrombieInternational Detective/Man From Interpol ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A pair of cool British TV soundtracks – both of which feature an action jazz style to rival the best early work of Henry Mancini for the television screen! First up is lost spy soundtrack work from the British composer Edwin Astley – best known for his work on The Saint and Danger Man, but also sounding pretty darn great on the earlier program International Detective! The feel here is similar to some of Astley's better-known work – a more dramatic take on the crime jazz used on American TV in the late 50s – one that retains much of the instrumental elements of the sound, especially the well-placed use of saxes – but which also uses larger orchestrations to flesh out the music nicely, creating a stronger, more cinematic feel. The set features a total of 21 tracks from this short-lived show – and titles include "International Detective", "Murder Strip", "Theme For Larceny", "Night Patrol", "The Badge", "Manhunt", "Shock Tactics", "Murder Chase", and "Concerto In Law". Next is Man From Interpol – one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre". CD

Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". ✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! In a way, this is the kind of modern R&B album that we always looked for back in the 80s, but rarely found put together so well. Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Titles include "Iyo Re", "Elelemi", "Ere Yon", "Re Hese", "It's All For You", "Sogio", and "Gossiper Scandal Monger". CD

Elektra, 1991. Used ... $1.99
A much better record than we want to admit, with Natalie moving towards jazzy numbers and standards, for a blockbuster Grammy winning effort. Her voice stands up well to the mainstream polish, and even the creepy "duet" with her father is enjoyable. 22 tracks in all, including "The Very Thought Of You", "Paper Moon", "Mona Lisa", 'This Can't Be Love", "Lush Life", "That Sunday That Summer", "Avalon", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Nature Boy", "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Thous Swell" and "Unforgettable". Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. John ColtraneLush Life (RVG remaster series) ... CD
Prestige, 1957/1958. Used ... $4.99
Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody". CD

Prestige, 1957/1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $13.99
Strong work – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreet album. The 2LP set is from the mid 70s – and combines tracks originally issued on the albums Lush Life and Coltrane. Side one of Lush Life features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody". Coltrane is a classic set for Prestige – a set of blowing session tracks with Trane in the lead, featuring players like Sahib Shihab, Mal Waldron, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Al Heath. Trane's in great form here – even though the overall set's a bit less structured than some of his later albums – and his tone and solo approach are already stepping out from the rest of the pack with great vigor! Titles include "Bakai", "Time Was", "Straight Street", and "Chronic Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Jess ConradJess For You – The Definitive Collection ... CD
El (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". James CottonPure Cotton ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good- ... $11.99
The second Verve album from James Cotton, and oddly a rootsier effort than the first! While Cotton's debut often had some more soul-styled grooves in the mix, this one's a lot more stripped-down and bluesy – in a style that echoes Chess Records from a decade before! Cotton plays harmonica and sings, and other instrumentation includes guitar, organ, bass, drums, and tambourine – all used in standard late 60s bluesy modes – that revivalist approach to the genre that helped shift its audiences in the 70s. Titles include "Soul Survivor", "Heart Attack", "Lovin Cup", "She's Murder", "Somethin You Got", "The Creeper", and "Down At Your Buryin". LP, Vinyl record album

CovenWitchcraft (red & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An insane record – and one of the strangest moments in pop music during the early 70s! Coven are best known to most folks for cutting the message-oriented, sweet folk tune "One Tin Soldier" – but here, they change course completely – and offer up a whole album dedicated to the dark arts and satanic pursuits – with a sonic quality that actually beats just about anything ever recorded by Anton La Vey! The record is ostensibly an "anti-witchcraft" album – but it actually comes off as being totally sincere – in a really great way. Some tunes are song-based – like "Coven In Charing Cross", "Black Sabbath", and "Choke Thirst Die" – but the album also has this really long "Satanic Mass", which even features the Lord's Prayer spoken backwards – completely creepy, in a Kenneth Anger magick sort of way! Patrick CowleyAfternooners ... CD
Dark Entries, Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
The continuing lost legacy of Patrick Cowley – the San Francisco 80s club maestro who made some famous records with Sylvester – but who also did a huge amount of underground sounds for porno films at the time! This set digs deep into that legacy – by featuring music that Cowley did for the 1982 film Afternooners, as well as a few other tracks from the time – material that's a great 80s extrapolation of the sorts of slinky funk you'd know from 70s porn! The sounds here are heavy on beats and keyboards – a much more slowed-down take on territory that Cowley explored on his club singles of the period – and the basslines are plenty heavy, and very seductive – as you might imagine, given the images they were used with on the screen. We should tell you that the package does include a few nude images inside – so be warned if you're offended by that sort of thing. Titles include "Love Come Set Me Free", "Big Shot", "Surfside Sex", "Hot Beach", "The Runner", "One Hot Afternoon", "Leather Bound", and "Bore & Stroke". CD

Joe Cuba SextetDiggin' The Most ... LP
Seeco, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A classic early groover from the great Joe Cuba – easily his best album of the pre-Latin soul years – and recorded in a tight small combo mode that was really shaking up the New York scene at the time! In advance of most other Latin leaders, Joe was already working here with both English and Spanish language vocalists – Cheo Feliciano and Jimmy Sabater – in a great mix of styles that has some early soul creeping into the mix, and which also features some heavy groovers that wonderfully distill the longer descarga style into some shorter lively numbers! Tracks have lots of great vibes – and titles include "Mercy", "Llegue", "Mambo Of The Times", "Siempre Sea", "El Hueso", and "Arinanara". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice little shark-themed soundtrack, but one that comes across with a vibe that's quite different than any of the music used for Jaws – partly because there's a number of vocal tunes in the mix! The set features three standout songs – "Hollywood Big Time" and "You've Changed The World For Me", sung by Yvonne Wilkins – and "Ballad", which is sung by composer Maurizio De Angelis himself – which are then mixed with instrumental numbers that are electric and keyboard-heavy, maybe more in line with Italian slasher/horror work of the period than you might expect! The colder electronics must have given the watery scenes a really great vibe on the screen – and the package features great sound throughout, and a mighty nice graphic appeal. LP, Vinyl record album

The album's got a much more balanced vibe than you'd expect from the single – some mellower cuts that almost seem to respect Yvonne's vocals even more, and touches of global rhythms at points that illustrate her role as a bigger star around the world, thanks to roles on stage and screen. Fania, 1980. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great little back to basics effort from the Fania All Stars – one that shakes off some of the electric and clubby influences that were creeping in during their years at Columbia, and returns the group to a mostly salsa groove! The sound here is bold and bright throughout – traditional at one level, but colored with modern inflections and a deepening sense of sophistication that may well make it one of the group's most cohesive records ever! Members of the ensemble include Roberto Roena, Johnny Pacheco, Luie Ramirez, and Papo Lucca – and vocals are by Celia Cruz, Adalberto Santiago, Ruben Blades, Santos Colon, Hector Lavoe, and Cheo Feliciano. Titles include "Dinamita", "Dime", "Ublabadu", "Cuando Despiertes", "La Borinquena", and "Encantigo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)
