Basso Valdambrini QuintetBasso Valdambrini Quintet (Verve) ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good ... $59.99
A sharp-edged session of tremendous trumpet and tenor interplay – served up by the legendary quintet of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini! The album's got a sound that's as hip as it looks – a great approach to 50s modern jazz, done in a style that's equally influenced by west coast cool and east coast hardbop! Valdambrini's trumpet is beautifully measured throughout – with echoes of both Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker – offset by some deeper grooving on tenor from Basso, who plays with a strength and command that few American players of the time could match. Titles include "Come Out Wherever You Are", "Lo Struzzo Oscar", "Lotar", "Gone With The Wind", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", and "Fan Tan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some splitting at the top of the spine held with clear tape, looks nice otherwise with very light wear and aging.)

Body 11Youth ... LP
Medical, Mid 80s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A one-man German operation from the mid-80s – but one with a punchy approach that rivals some of the better electro pop from the Euro scene at the time! Body 11 only ever issued a 7" EP back in the day, plus a handful of cuts on cassette – but the sound here really recalls those great early 80s moments when older, colder groups like Cabaret Voltaire or Human League found a way to get more tuneful – yet still hold onto most of the edge that made them so great. Had Body 11 issued these cuts in early 80s Sheffield or Manchester, he might well have broken big – but it's also the mystery of these obscure tracks that keeps the record really interesting too. Instrumentation includes lots of Yamaha, Korg, and Roland electronics – and titles include "Wasteland 2", "Under My Command", "Just A Smile", "Marching", "Hearts", and "Fascination". LP, Vinyl record album
(Milky clear vinyl, including the insert.)

✨✧ ClipseLord Willin' ... LP
Star Trak/Arista, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A neo-electro/drug rap/crossover hip hop classic produced by the Neptunes, and the debut LP on their own Star Trak label. Malice and Pusha T are smooth, confident rhymers with some stand-out moments, but the Neptunes are driving this train, much in the way Prince Paul commandeered early De La Soul productions. Like Paul, The Neptunes' fingerprints are evident on just about every second of every track, but it doesn't diminish the role of the rappers in the least. This is a true hip hop record from beginning to end, something the 'Tunes had shied away from around the same time with the hard rockin' NERD. Their production style saturated pop music at the time, but this may be the Neptunes first album-length masterpiece. Tracks include "Young Boy", "Ma, I Don't Love Her" featuring Faith Evans, "Ego", "Comedy Central" featuring Fabulous, "Gangsta Lean", "Let's Talk About It" featuring Jermaine Dupri, and more. Includes exclusive "Grindin'" remixes. LP, Vinyl record album
(Edited promo in a Star Trak sleeve. Label on Side D has a streak of red marker.)

Copper Plated Integrated CircuitPlugged In Pop ... LP
Command, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
Very cool moog album with a Perry-Kingsley feel. That is, it's got sort of a sharp electronic sound, but with grooviness underneath that keeps the whole thing going along at a jaunty pace. At times, the electronic sounds will break down into a bunch of noise, and then jump into a swingin' poppy track, then break down again. Lots of nice original stuff, like "Resonant Circuit", "Circuit Breaker", and "Jazz Waltz Circuit" – plus a few covers. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kenny Burrell & Coleman HawkinsMoonglow (Hawk Relaxes/Bluesey Burrell/Kenny Burrell & Ray Bryant) ... LP
Prestige, 1958/1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The first LP features the full album The Hawk Relaxes – a great illustration of the gentle genius that made so many later Coleman Hawkins records so great! The relaxed setting for this record is a perfect setting for Hawkins to open up and stretch out – working his tenor with a sound that has surprising modern edges, and unusual twists and turns, yet still all the careful economy of his better-known classic sides. There's a command of the instrument here that few other aging players ever seemed to muster – always a sense of new discovery and invention that marks the work strongly, even at a time when Hawkins could have been sitting on his laurels, playing the same old tune! Titles are all standards, but don't let that fool you – because there's plenty of magic in Coleman's versions of "Moonglow", "Just A Gigolo", "Speak Low", "When Day Is Done", and "I'll Never Be The Same". Oh, and we almost forgot – just because we're so focused on Hawkins – the other players include Ronnell Bright on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – making a surprising early appearance here! Side 3 features material from the album Bluesy Burrell, also with Hawkins – and side 4 features material from Kenny Burrell & Ray Bryant. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Richard HaymanGenuine Electric Latin Love Machine ... LP
Command, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $16.99
Groovy electronic pop stuff from the great Command label! Not as wild as Dick Hyman, but still pretty darn nice, and with a good groovy feel, accented by some nice "Latin" touches. Titles include "Girl From Ipanema", "Dansero", "Look Of Love", "Hare Krishna", and "Samba De Victoria". Groovy gatefold cover, too, with a goofy robot on the front! LP, Vinyl record album

Nice one! This is one of Dick Hyman's most fantastic LPs, and the one that includes some of his best moogy playing. With the very funky club cut "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", plus "Both Sides Now", "Kolumbo", "Time Is Tight", and "Green Onions". LP, Vinyl record album

Dick HymanMan From ORGAN ... LP
Command, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
A very groovy organ record from Dick Hyman – one that has him playing spy themes, like "The Liquidator", "Thunderball", "Man From UNCLE", "The Cat", "Agent Double O Soul", "A Man Alone", and "Theme From Honey West". Hyman's playing in a streamlined moody way – not as funky as on his moog records, but still quite nice, and with a very good groove! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Dick HymanMirrors ... LP
Command, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
Pre-moog – but still very nice, and an album of oddly-arranged tracks that features Hyman on both organ and piano! The format's a straight trio, but the arrangements open the tracks up more than you expect – and take the songs past their simple cover versions. Includes a groovy version of "Ode to Billy Joe", plus "Respect" and "Groovin" – plus more obscure tracks like "House Of Mirrors" and "The Flower Road". Not a total breakbeat experience, but a nice bit of cheesy keyboards and some nice grooves! LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole and light wear.)

Jack JonesMy Kind Of Town ... LP
Kapp, 1965. Near Mint- ... $3.99
My Kind Of Town is a set that's pulled from sessions recorded over a few years in the early 60s – under the direction of arrangers Glenn Osser, Don Costa, and Marty Paich – all of whom bring a slightly different twist to his music! The styles are a bit varied, but in a way that shows Jack's great command of many modes – and given that there's a three-year duration between the first recording and the last on the set, the record acts almost like a portrait of Jones' evolution during the time. Titles include "Yes I Can", "I'm All Smiles", "Time After Time", "King Of The Road", "Travellin On", "My Kind Of Town", and "Somewhere Along The Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sheila Jordan & Arild AndersenSheila ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". Bobby KeysBobby Keys ... LP
Warner/Aurora, 1972. Near Mint- ... $59.99
A really cool album from saxophonist Bobby Keys – a record with no vocals at all, just Bobby's solos – but a set that's maybe better tagged as instrumental rock than jazz, given the heavyweight guest musicians in the lineup! Keys blows with an all-star array of talent from the rock scene of the time – including Jack Bruce and Felix Pappalardi on bass, Leslie West and Dave Mason on guitars, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, and Ringo Starr on drums – plus a bit more guitar from George Harrison, too! Yet what's great about the record is that all these talents put aside their ego and follow Bobby's lead – in a groove that's maybe a bit southern soul, a bit down-home rock – with some definite currents of Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the music. Titles include "Crispy Duck", "Steal From A King", "Bootleg", "Smokefoot", "Altar Rock", "Command Performance", and "Sound & Foam". LP, Vinyl record album

Complicated later work from Charles Mingus – a great illustration of the way his power to command a large ensemble never wavered as the years went on! The album features two different large groups of players – filled with modernists young and old – including Ricky Ford, George Coleman, and Michael Brecker ont enors; Ronni Cuber and Pepper Adams on baritone; Randy Brecker and Jack Walrath on trumpets; Lee Konitz on alto, Larry Coryell on guitar, Slide Hampton on trombone, and Eddie Gomez on bass. Side one features the 30 minute track "Three Worlds Of Drums", and side 2 contains a remake of "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", plus "Devil Woman" and "Carolyn Keki Mingus". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Diana RossDiana Ross Live At Caesars Palace ... LP
Motown, 1974. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic early demonstration of the solo powers of Diana Ross – a live date from Vegas, and one that has her commanding the stage not just as a singer of soul music, but as a female star ready to rival the talents of any of her contemporaries in the mainstream! Ross shines here with a brilliant brightness right from the start – working with a large ensemble that echoes all her best Motown roots, but which also pushes things out in fuller, more vibrant modes too – as Diana runs through tracks that include old soul favorites, jazz standards, and even some surprising choices from the charts – at a level that's filled with poise, class, and soul throughout. Titles include a great "Supremes Medley", plus "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Corner Of The Sky", "I Love You Porgy", "My Man", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and a "Lady Sings The Blues Medley" with titles from the Billie Holiday songbook. ✨✧ Louis SmithHere Comes Louis Smith ... LP
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing with a power that beats most of his other Mercury sessions of the late 50s! But the real credit here should go to Louis Smith – who's got a sense of power and command that should have made him one of THE trumpeters of the 50s – an emerging young talent to stand alongside Lee Morgan, Nat Adderley, and other post-Fats Navarro/Clifford Brown talents on the instrument. Smith sparkles throughout with a mix of soul and modernism we really love – and an earthy way of blowing the horn that doesn't always reach its goals, but which draws even more energy from its ability to try! The rhythm section on the album's also very tight – with Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and either Tommy Flanagan or Duke Jordan on piano – and tracks include "Ande", "Brill's Blues", "South Side", and "Val's Blues". Toots ThielemansGuitar & Strings . . . And Things ... LP
Command, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
A pretty great album of groovy tracks from Toots! This one's less in a straight jazz mode than it is in kind of a jazzy easy style – similar to some of Gabor Szabo's work on Impulse from the same time, with a breezy blend of orchestrations, light instrumental solos on flute, vibes, and guitar, and some occasional wordless vocals folded into the mix. The arrangements are light and focused on a groove at all times – with lots of bossa bits and sountracky moments. Titles include "So What's New?", "Stuck UP", "Wave", "Sunny", "Quarter To Five", and "A Man & A Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Cedar WaltonFirst Set ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1978. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A strong quartet set from piano genius Cedar Walton – with Bob Berg blowing on tenor, recalling the feel of the older Walton/Hank Mobley sides in the same manner – but with the Eastern Rebellion vibe that you'd get from Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums! The set was recorded live at Club Montmartre in 1977 – and Walton is, as ever, fully in command of his soulful talents. Titles include "Off Minor", "For All We Know", and the great Walton originals "Holy Land" and "Ojos De Rojo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tyrone WashingtonNatural Essence ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare and unusual chapter in mid 60s Blue Note – the debut of tenorist Tyrone Washington, an up-and-coming talent from the hip New Jersey scene of the time! Washington's name may not have lasted long in the jazz annals, but at this important point in his career, he's working with a young Woody Shaw – also part of the Jersey scene – and together, the pair really make the album cook – stretching out with a soulful, spiritual sound that really points the way towards the indie scene of the 70s! Shaw's voice is a big part of the record, but Tyrone's still definitely in command – blowing his tenor with these quick flurries of notes that are somewhere in the Coltrane school, yet arguably moving already past him too – kind of a post-Coltrane vibe in the year before the great one passed away. Washington also wrote all of the album's 6 tracks – really fresh numbers that burn with intensity, and make the album as creatively inventive as some of the best Jackie McLean Blue Note sides from the time. In addition to Woody Shaw's trumpet, other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – a very hip lineup who really make magic on cuts that include "Yearning For Love", "Ethos", "Soul Dance", "Positive Path", and "Song Of Peace". ✨✧ VariousPersonal Space – Electronic Soul 1974 to 1984 ... LP
Chocolate Industries, Late 70s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great document of the transformation of soul music in the 70s – a unique stretch when folks started experimenting with some of the new electronic elements that were surfacing on the market – using them to really change things up with a new groove! Key examples of this trend can be found in the music of Shuggie Otis (Inspiration Information) and Timmy Thomas (Why Can't We Live Together) – but there was lots more activity going on as well – and this wicked set from Chocolate Industries brings together the best from the late 70s/early 80s underground! Most tracks here were issued on small labels, and barely got any circulation – but they all show a Shuggie-like sense of experimentation with electronic sounds and rhythms – often used in key ways to create a slinky, percolating style of soul music that's mighty nice – not the upbeat electro disco of the 80s, but a mellower soul-based mode that's very unique! Titles include "Don't Challenge Me" by Makers, "It's All Over" by T Dyson & Company, "Master Ship" by Starship Commander Woo Woo, "Love Vibrator" by Johnny Walker, "One More Time" by Steve Elliott, "Are You Ready To Come With Me (part 2)" by USAires, "Time To Go Home" by Otis G Johnson, "A Man" by Key & Cleary, and "All About Money" by Spontaneous Overflow.
