Ruben BladesSalswing ... LP
Ruben Blades, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... About January 7, 2022 (delayed)
Ruben Blades steps out here in a mix of modes – tracks from both his Swing and Salsa Plus albums, and like those cuts, done in collaboration with the group of Robert Delgado – the bassist whose arrangements really help the record soar! Ruben's vocals are wonderful – somehow even better with age, and still commanding all the power of the past – and the rest of the group has the right balance of jazzy horn work and Latin currents in the rhythms to really help set the mood. Titles include "Mambo Gil", "Watch What Happens", "Pennies From Heaven", "Paula C", "Do I Hear Four", "Cobarde", and "The Way You Look Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album

John CaleAcademy In Peril (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/4 Men With Beards, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the coolest, most unusual albums ever from the great John Cale – a set that draws strongly on his roots in the New York underground of the mid 60s – including time spent with Tony Conrad and other experimentalists! The record is almost all instrumental – and has Cale mixing modes that include spare passages that are very evocative and contemplative, with fuller orchestral outbursts that are somewhere in the territory of his material with Terry Riley, but more freewheeling and less minimalist overall. Piano is the main instrument on many numbers, and Cale stuns us with his command of the keyboard – and the album features one striking vocal performance on the song "King Harry", alongside other titles that include "The Philosopher", "Brahms", "Legs Larry At Television Centre", "John Milton", and "Intro/Days Of Steam". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the very cool die-cut slide design cover!)

Serge ChaloffBoston Blow-Up! ... LP
Capitol, 1955. Very Good ... $79.99
One of the few key recordings issued by baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff before his untimely early death – a tremendous little record that really helped redefine the place of his instrument in jazz! The album is one of a number produced by Stan Kenton for Capitol at the time, but it's far from the cooler jazz outings of other "Kenton Presents" sessions – a real Boston Blow up that has Serge standing starkly out front on the baritone, hitting some tremendous notes that show a command and dexterity on his instrument that few other players could match! Also noteworthy is the presence of the great Boots Mussulli on alto sax – a sharp-edge player with a lot of Charlie Mariano touches, and an artist who's rarely heard in a setting so stripped-down as this. Other artists include Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, Ray Santisi on piano, and Jimmy Zitano on drums – and titles include the original numbers "Kip", "Unison", "Bob The Robin", and "Sergical" – plus versions of "What's New", "Yesterday's Gardenias", and Jaki Byard's "Diane's Melody". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 50s US pressing, with turquoise label! Vinyl is nice and clean, and although it has some light marks, it plays wonderfully. Cover has a bit of old tape in one corner, and some light wear there too – but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Copper Plated Integrated CircuitPlugged In Pop ... LP
Command, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool moog album with a Perry-Kingsley feel. That is, it's got sort of a sharp electronic sound, but with grooviness underneath that keeps the whole thing going along at a jaunty pace. At times, the electronic sounds will break down into a bunch of noise, and then jump into a swingin' poppy track, then break down again. Lots of nice original stuff, like "Resonant Circuit", "Circuit Breaker", and "Jazz Waltz Circuit" – plus a few covers. LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a mark that clicks just a bit at the beginning of Side 2. Cover has bumped corners, an index label at the top left corner, some gloss separation at the spine, and a promo sticker in back.)

El RegoEl Rego ... LP
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". Betty EverettIt's In His Kiss (Shoop-Shoop) ... LP
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good- ... $11.99
A key set of early work from Betty Everett – and a great document of the strength of her early soul on Vee Jay! Although the title hit is quite familiar (and possibly a bit overplayed), Betty was a great vocalist with a wide command of material even at this early point in her career – and the album has her running through numbers that easily step between jazzy, bluesy, and soulful modes that beautifully bridge the worlds of soul and R&B! You might want to skip past the title hit, lest it color your judgment of the record, because there are loads of nice tracks on here, like "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Until You Were Gone", "The Prince of Players", and "I Need You So". ✨✧ Ryo FukuiScenery ... LP
We Release Jazz (Switzerland), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You". ✨✧ Green DayNimrod ... LP
Reprise/Rhino, 1997. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Green Day as in command of killer hooks and stomping choruses as ever! Nimrod was bit underappreciated by longtime fans growing weary of Green Day's aging process towards the late 90s, but it's got a well earned and slowly built reputation as a fan favorite nowadays. With the formula of unapologetically appropriated craft well in place – proudly working in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of pop punk – there's some pretty smart and honest vulnerability in the lyrics, with the fellas well aware that getting older doing what they do is a tricky thing to pull off. Given that they're as popular as ever deep in the next millennium, they clearly got it right! Includes "Nice Guys Finish Last", "Hitchin' A Ride", "Redundant", "All The Time", "Jinx", "Reject", "King For A Day", "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Dick HymanAge Of Electronicus ... LP
Command/Pleasure For Music, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99
One of the all-time great moog albums of the 60s – served up by pianist Dick Hyman, who'd cut a fair bit of more standard material in the years before – but who also turned out to be a wizard with the new electric instrument, helping it to find a very fresh sound! Unlike some of the more offbeat moogy records of the time, Hyman's approach focuses right in on the groove – using lots of influences from both soul and pop, but also exploding the electronics at a level that take the moog way past some of the more simple moog cover records of the period. Titles include the very funky club cut "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" – plus "Both Sides Now", "Kolumbo", "Time Is Tight", and "Green Onions". LP, Vinyl record album

Dick HymanBrasilian Impressions ... LP
Command, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible little set by Dick Hyman – as light and lovely as his other records are groovy – and done in a way that mixes Dick's breezy work on piano with a sweet set of woodwinds in the background! The sound's not exactly bossa, but it draws plenty of inspiration from the sound of Brazil in the 60s – as well as a fair bit from French and Italian soundtrack interpretations of the genre, as Hyman's work here reminds us an awful lot of the best of them. There's no crazy moog or weird organ, but this is a great little record with plenty of jazzy touches on the keys and playful arrangements on the backdrops – pure Hyman magic, on a set of tracks that includes "Jazz N Samba", "Sugarloaf", "Time For Love", "Samba De Duas Notas", "Mas Que Nada", "O Barquinho", and "Song of the Jet". Dick HymanConcerto Electro ... LP
Command/ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
Not as "electro" as you might expect from the title, but a pretty nice little record from Dick! The album has Hyman playing Baldwin electric piano in front of larger orchestrations – running through a suite of tracks that move from jazz to classic to "rock" type rhythms – at the best moments soaring like some hip soundtrack tunes, and at the weaker ones, just sounding like spare jazz solo work. The album features one long piece of music, divided up into many moods and tones. LP, Vinyl record album

Dick HymanMoog – The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman ... LP
Command, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the coolest, grooviest moog albums you'll ever hope to buy – a wonderful foray into the new world of synthetic sounds, done by pianist Dick Hyman – who was working in a straight jazz format just a decade before! Dick turns out to be a wonderful talent on the moog – very well-suited to the record, with just the right sort of quirky, playful approach to bring the best out of the instrument – at a level that's right up there with the best by Perrey & Kingsley, and maybe even cooler – given that Dick doesn't rely nearly as much on studio tricks! All tunes are pretty bouncy, groovy, and filled with sweet moogy touches – and titles include "The Minotaur", "The Legend Of Johnny Pot", "Improvisation In Fourths", "Topless Dancers Of Corfu", and "The Moog & Me". New Jazz, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
McLean's Scene is a strong one – as the young Jackie is really coming into his own at the time of the session, blowing and growing with a soulful command of the alto sax that would emerge even more strongly in the 60s. The album's got McLean working in a slightly open-ended way – almost a blowing session, but a bit more controlled – yet in that relaxed style that always seemed to get the most sharpness out of Jackie's horn at the time. Other players include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Mal Waldron or Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers or Arthur Phipps on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Alphonse MouzonBack To Jazz ... LP
PA USA, 1985. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Alphonze Mouzon goes back to jazz – after years of working in funky fusion and R&B – but overall, the set's still got some nice electric touches that link it to his other work. (And let's be honest, it's not like Mouzon ever really recorded any straight jazz sets in the early years – he kind of just started out as a funky drummer from the get-go.) Overall, the feel is a mix of acoustic and electric playing – in the manner of some major label jazz sets from the time – and even Mouzon plays a bit of electric, using synth drums on a number of tracks. Titles include "The Next Time We Love", "Peace On Earth", "St Thomas", "Space Commander", "Just Because Of You", and a remake of his 70s funk classic "Poobli". LP, Vinyl record album

Evan ParkerSix Of One ... LP
Incus/OTOroku (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
The "one" here is the soprano saxophone – used exclusively by Evan Parker on the six improvised tracks on the set – each one very different than the other, and really showing the diversity and variation that Parker can bring to a performance! Often, the sound is very dense – tones and notes flowing effortlessly on top of one another – but clearly with this ear for sounds that often go beyond music, and a command of the instrument that rivals that of Steve Lacy in a similar setting – almost as if the record is Evan Parker's way of trying to claim a soprano saxophone title in the world of improvised music! Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". One of those great stripped-down Peterson-plus dates for Pablo Records from the 70s – a session that features Oscar on both piano and organ, working alongside the trumpet of Roy Eldridge! There's no other instrumentation at all, and the sound is completely charming – intimate without sounding too laidback – and especially nice when the organ comes in, which makes for a real change from some of the other Peterson dates of this nature. Eldridge has more than enough command of his horn to still swing mightily in the setting – and titles include "Little Jazz", "Bad Hat Blues", "Sunday", "Blues For Chu", "She's Funny That Way", and "The Way You Look Tonight". Beautifully spare work from guitarist Baden Powell – and a record that certainly lives up to its title! Baden's playing in a mostly unaccompanied setting for the session – working through some tunes that are markedly gentler than his bossa era numbers, but which demonstrate an amazing command of the acoustic guitar – a fragile, yet moving sensibility that's beautifully recorded throughout. A few tracks feature light percussion, or a bit of bass – but Baden's solo guitar is in the front of the mix throughout – on titles that include "Bassamba", "Brasiliana", "Fim Da Linha", "Marcia Eu Te Amo", "Na Gafiera Do Vidigal", and "Chara". A landmark pairing of two Chicago avant players at the start of the 80s – and one that shows that the city had plenty going on, even away from the AACM! The set brings together the older Hal Russell – still an underground secret in the city – and the younger Mars Williams, who was just starting out here, but would soon rise to fame in the NRG Ensemble, and on decades of other recordings and alliances in the Windy City. There's a mix of instrumentation that really shows the open-minded sense of improvisation that Russell helped encourage in the younger Generations – and Hal plays drums, C melody sax, cornet, vibes, toy horns, and "lots of other stuff" – with Mars Williams playing tenor sax, slide whistles, bells, newspapers, and "lots of other stuff" too! ✨✧ Rhoda ScottRhoda Scott 2 (aka Come Bach To Me) ... LP
Barclay/Pepita (Hungary), 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Organist Rhoda Scott takes on the Bach jazz groove of the French jazz scene – using her Hammond with just a bit of drums in the background, all in a style that's pretty darn spacious, and which shows a tremendous command of the instrument! Given the setting, there's certainly some echoes of pipe organ work in Scott's tones – but as on her other albums of the time, she still manages to swing at the right moments, which usually kick in as the tunes roll on! Most numbers mix up an initial theme from Bach with a groovier contemporary song – in ways that make for a pop/classical medley mode that's quite unique. Titles include "Symphonie Du Noveau Monde/Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay", "Prelude En Sol Mineur/Moanin", "Toccata En Re Mineur/Les Feuilles Mortes", and "Prelude En Si Bemol Majeur/The Preacher". Tyrone WashingtonNatural Essence ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+ ... $49.99
A rare and unusual chapter in mid 60s Blue Note – the debut of tenorist Tyrone Washington, an up-and-coming talent from the hip New Jersey scene of the time! Washington's name may not have lasted long in the jazz annals, but at this important point in his career, he's working with a young Woody Shaw – also part of the Jersey scene – and together, the pair really make the album cook – stretching out with a soulful, spiritual sound that really points the way towards the indie scene of the 70s! Shaw's voice is a big part of the record, but Tyrone's still definitely in command – blowing his tenor with these quick flurries of notes that are somewhere in the Coltrane school, yet arguably moving already past him too – kind of a post-Coltrane vibe in the year before the great one passed away. Washington also wrote all of the album's 6 tracks – really fresh numbers that burn with intensity, and make the album as creatively inventive as some of the best Jackie McLean Blue Note sides from the time. In addition to Woody Shaw's trumpet, other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – a very hip lineup who really make magic on cuts that include "Yearning For Love", "Ethos", "Soul Dance", "Positive Path", and "Song Of Peace". Tony's playing here with all the bold, open energy of his classic recordings – and although he picks up a bit of electric percussion at points, he still plays it all "live" – and really seems to defer to the richer acoustic sounds of the group's great lineup – an all-star setting that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Ron Carter on bass, and Mulgrew Miller on piano! The richness of the alto and trumpet are tremendous – and Hutcherson's vibes ring out beautifully, a perfect balance of tone and timing. Titles include "Foreign Intrigue", "My Michele", "Takin My Time", "Sister Cheryl", and "Arboretum". LP, Vinyl record album

Denny ZeitlinZeitgeist ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Pianist Denny Zeitlin is sporting a beard on the cover of this fourth album for Columbia Records – and his music here definitely reflects a bit of a change from his earlier cleaner-cut image! Denny steps a bit outside at times – never to much so to make the album a session of avant jazz, but definitely showing the listener at the start that he's able to stretch out in the same way as some of the more adventurous pianists of his generation – yet really sound best as a master of lyrical understatement, as on his previous few records! Zeitlin's command of chords is wonderful – these blocks of color and subtle sound in his hands – inspired by Bill Evans, but taken in a whole new direction – and set up here in two different trios, with either Charlie Haden or Joe Halpin on bass, and Oliver Johnson or Jerry Granelli on drums. The real star of the show is always Denny, though – holding us rapt on titles that include "The Hyde Street Run", "Dormammu", "Maiden Voyage", "Offshore Breeze", "Mirage", and "Night & Day". VariousLagos All Routes ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
A stellar batch of Afro funk and native groove from Lagos! Strains of western funk and soulful sounds work their way into the material – thanks again to Fela's mighty influence – but there's a lot more to it! Simmering along with the Afro funk and soul are some truly riveting native folk sounds – filtered through many of the modern influence that make the funk stuff so compelling – but providing a much more natively learned groove. It's a totally fresh perspectived – focused on the Lagos territory – but an incredible listen to anyone, anywhere, with a pair of ears! 15 tracks in all: "Eyi Yato/Elere Ni Wa" by Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey And His Inter-Reformers Band, "Joromi" by Sir Victor Uwaifo, "Sowambe" by Sagbeni Aragbada, "Professional Super Bantous" by Super Negro Bantopus, "Ole Obinrin" by Ambali Adedeji, "Da Wa Lohun" by Harbors Band, "Moonlight Highlife" by Dr Victor Olaiya and more! ✨✧ VariousLife Aquatic – Original Soundtrack (blue vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Hollywood, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The soundtrack to the second most underrated of Wes Anderson's films – the strangely wonderful seafaring adventure the Life Aquatic! The heart of the album is the delicate, beautiful solo acoustic covers of David Bowie tunes by Brazil's Seu Jorge – plus some great scoring by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. Seu commandeers "Rebel Rebel", "Life On Mars", "Starman" and "Five Years" – his gruff, but sweet vocals crooning mostly in Portugese, while Bowie's instantly identifiable melodies easily float to the surface. Mothersbaugh's soundtrack compositions get better and more extroverted with each project, this one branching off from the faux stuffy baroque touches he spun so wonderfully on Rushmore and the Royal Tennenbaums, and even cooking up some blunt, old school synthesizer noisiness that'll please the Spuds! This being a Wes Anderson film, there's some leftfield hits and pop oddities, too. 20 tracks in all, including score pieces, the Jorge/Bowie tunes, plus "Shark Attack Theme" and more by Sven Libaek, "La Nina De Puerta Oscura" by Paco De Lucia, "Search And Destroy" by Iggy & The Stooges, "30 Century Man" by Scott Walker, "Gut Feeling" by Devo and more. As was the case with Anderson's Bottlerocket, the film's critics will slowly shrink into silence over the next few years and the Life Aquatic will be very fondly remembered. LP, Vinyl record album
