Sam PrekopComma ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". CD

✨✧ Basso Valdambrini QuintetBasso Valdambrini Quintet (1959) ... LP
Jolly/BTF (Italy), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sharp-edged session of tremendous trumpet and tenor interplay – served up by the legendary quintet of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini! The album's got a sound that's as hip as it looks – a great approach to 50s modern jazz, done in a style that's equally influenced by west coast cool and east coast hardbop! Valdambrini's trumpet is beautifully measured throughout – with echoes of both Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker – offset by some deeper grooving on tenor from Basso, who plays with a strength and command that few American players of the time could match. Titles include "Come Out Wherever You Are", "Lo Struzzo Oscar", "Lotar", "Gone With The Wind", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", and "Fan Tan". LP, Vinyl record album

Body 11Youth ... LP
Medical, Mid 80s. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A one-man German operation from the mid-80s – but one with a punchy approach that rivals some of the better electro pop from the Euro scene at the time! Body 11 only ever issued a 7" EP back in the day, plus a handful of cuts on cassette – but the sound here really recalls those great early 80s moments when older, colder groups like Cabaret Voltaire or Human League found a way to get more tuneful – yet still hold onto most of the edge that made them so great. Had Body 11 issued these cuts in early 80s Sheffield or Manchester, he might well have broken big – but it's also the mystery of these obscure tracks that keeps the record really interesting too. Instrumentation includes lots of Yamaha, Korg, and Roland electronics – and titles include "Wasteland 2", "Under My Command", "Just A Smile", "Marching", "Hearts", and "Fascination". ✨✧ Joanne BrackeenPrism (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Joanne Brackeen's at the top of her game here – working in a unique set of duets with bassist Eddie Gomez – at a level that matches the fire and fury of any of her work with a larger group! Brackeen's got this tremendous command of the keyboard right from the start – a wide sweep that has the notes cascading wonderfully – in rich melodies with a very deep sound, but still lots of sharp edges, and this sense of freedom that makes you think she's always just about to go outside – before pulling it back a bit. Gomez is sublime, as always – and his bass work adapts perfectly to each individual moment – stating itself strongly, but never in a way that's gimmicky at all – and always balanced between a sense of melody and timekeeping too. Titles include "Lost Or Found", "International Festival", "Evanescent", "If You Dare", and "Prism". CD features three bonus tracks – alternate takes of "International Festival" and "Habitat". CD

✨✧ Joanne Brackeen & Clint HoustonNew True Illusion ... LP
Timeless (Netherlands), 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a record from this wonderful pianist – partly because the set only features the bass of Clint Houston for accompaniment, and no other instrumentation at all! Clint's sound is wonderful – full, rich, and extremely rhythmic – so much so, there's no need for drums at all on the record, as Houston blocks things out and paces the record from the strings up – with a commanding majesty that really seems echoed by Brackeen's lines on piano – every bit as lyrical and fluid as ever, but maybe even more powerful too! The whole thing's beautiful – more commanding than you might expect, especially for Brackeen – and titles include "Freedent", "Solar", "New True Illusion", "Steps What Was", and "Search For Peace". LP, Vinyl record album
(First pressing. Cover has some very light wear on two edges, but is great overall.)

Ray BryantRay Bryant Trio (Prestige) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1957. Used ... $19.99
A great early trio session from Ray Bryant – the kind of record that instantly shows why he caught such fire on the scene! There's a simplicity here that's almost invisible – a command of the keys that's strong, but not nearly as show-offy as some of Bryant's contemporaries. And given that Ray always managed to kick up a groove on the left side of the keyboard with his firm approach to rhythm, he's definitely a group player in the trio on the set – an excellent combo that features the wonderful Ike Issacs on bass and Specs Wright on drums. Titles include "Splittin", "Golden Earrings", "Sonar", "Changes", and "Daahoud". CD

Milt Buckner & Jo JonesBuck & Jo (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic pairing of talents – brought together here in a set of recordings that features way more material than we ever knew the duo recorded! The massive 4CD package is focused on spare duets between drummer Jo Jones and organist Milt Buckner – both American jazz musicians from a slightly earlier age, given a chance to really stretch out in a great way during the early 70s – taken into the studio by producer Hugues Panassie, in a mode that's free from any restrictions or commercial trappings at all! Both musicians can really do a lot with a little – especially Buckner, whose Hammond almost always sounds better without a larger group alongside him – because you can really hear his great command of the keys and pedals, and his amazing ear for a very wide range of sounds. The package features 42 tracks in all – some of them nice and long – with titles that include "Blues For Diane", "Am I Blue", "Pick Yourself Up", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Smoke Rings", "Madeline's Garden", "Anna Ryan", "Cute", "Count's Basement", "Perdido", "Three Little Words", "It Happened In Monterey", "That's All", and "Believe It Beloved". A grat tribute to the lovely Suzanne Ciani – an electronic music pioneer on the American scene, almost our answer to Delia Derbyshire over in the UK! Suzanne's specialty was the Buchla synthesizer, but she had great command over many other instruments too – many of which you'll see here in this great documentary. Ciani did recordings under her own name, and a fair bit of studio work too – including some famous commercial and video game work in the 80s. This package features the film on both DVD and Blu Ray – with bonus features that include Dinner with Don Buchla, More with Kitaro, Suzanne's Buchla Lixiviation Music Video, Scoring One Life to Live, Meeting Money Mark, and The Making of Seven Waves. Plus, the Blu Ray features more bonus materials –1984 Extended Studio Tour, The Eighth Wave Music Video, Starchild (Short Film by Joseph Robinson with music by Suzanne Ciani), 2017 Quadraphonic Buchla Performance, and a 1974 Buchla Concert. Leonard CohenNew Skin For The Old Ceremony (photo cover) ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good ... $29.99
New Skin for Leonard Cohen, who by 1974 was ready to start singing with a bit more flair, and do so over more textured arrangements – but still raw both emotionally and in the unglossy instrumentation! The core of the sound is still Cohen's voice, his words, and acoustic guitar – but this record brings in some ragged acoustic instrumentation and loose percussion, as well as some more layered strings, some winds, and backing vocals – Janis Ian among the vocalists. On later records, bigger productions would nearly choke the natural life out of Cohen's songs, but this is one of those totally great records where the change in sound would actually enhance the material in the studio – allowing for one of his best albums of the 70s. Titles include "Is This What You Wanted", "Chelsea Hotel #2", "Lover Lover Lover", "Field Commander Cohen", "Ther Is A War", "A Singer Must Die", "Leaving Greensleeves" and more. Very cool moog album with a Perry-Kingsley feel. That is, it's got sort of a sharp electronic sound, but with grooviness underneath that keeps the whole thing going along at a jaunty pace. At times, the electronic sounds will break down into a bunch of noise, and then jump into a swingin' poppy track, then break down again. Hamilton De Holanda & Orquestra Do Mato GrossoAlegria ... CD
Brasilianos (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $9.99
One of the most playful albums we've ever heard from Hamilton De Holanda – a set that features the master instrumentalist on 10 string bandolim, in front of some larger orchestrations – but on tunes that are pulled from a variety of pop culture sources, including some surprising entries from cartoons and video games! Hamilton's command of his instrument is still fantastic – beautifully expressive, and always doing a heck of a lot with just a little – and the larger orchestrations are thoughtfully handled by Leandro Carvalho, in a way that never dims the presence of the lead instrument, but instead inflects its sound with just the right sense of color and space. Titles include "Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo", "A Pantera Cor De Rosa", "Super Mario Brothers", "Os Flinstones", "Vida Alegria E Esperanca", and "Dorme Com Os Anjos". CD

Marco Di Marco with Nathan HainesMy London Friends ... CD
Arision (UK), 2004. Used ... $4.99
An incredible meeting of minds and generations – as 70s Italian jazz legend Marco Di Marco joins forces with current underground London darling Nathan Haines! Haines' work of recent years is steeped in a soul jazz groove inspired by the European scene of the 70s – of which Marco's famous trio was a very big part – so the meeting of the two players is almost a match made in heaven. The set's a straight jazz one, but it's also handled with the love of rhythmic freedom that marks some of the best London work of the 21st century – almost a 4 Hero inspiration bubbling at the bottom, as tracks take off and glisten with a richly driving sound. Marco's piano is as wonderfully lyrical as ever – evocative, but never snoozy or too painterly to lose its swing – and Nathan Haines really shocks us with his full command of sax and flute in a jazz-based mode! The set also features some rollingly strong electric and double bass work by Andy Hamill and Robin Mullarkey, drums by Eduardo Marquez, and percussion by Pete Eckford – and titles include "Interlude At Dawn", "Brazilian Waltz", "Up West", "Repeat After Me", "Solaria", "Take Off", "Jumpy","Winding Dance", "Soft Rain, Gentle Breeze", and more. Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. Used ... $19.99
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You" – plus 2 bonus tracks, "Mellow Dream" and "Horizon", both original compositions! Stan GetzQuartets ... LP
Prestige, 1949/1950. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Groundbreaking early work from Stan Getz – a 12" LP that compiles earlier recordings made for Prestige at the end of the 40s – all of which are a perfect exercise in tone, timing, and balance! The setting is simple – quartets with either Al Haig or Tony Aless on piano – but Getz makes magic from the start, flowering the tunes with inventive twists and turns in his horn – not in a simple boppish copycat mode, but in a style that's dripping with soul and feeling all the way through! The record won't hit you over the head as much as some of Stan's later Verve work, but it's almost even better because of that – as even in the simplest of settings, Getz really manages to grab our ear right away, and amaze us with his deft command and personal direction of his instrument! Groundbreaking early work from drummer Milford Graves and pianist Don Pullen – a set of long, free improvisations that were originally issued on Graves' Self-Reliance Productions label – combined here for the first time ever! The music is even more striking than sounds from the time on the ESP label – and also really predates some of the freer work of this type from the European scene – as Graves is a monster on the drum kit and a range of percussion, reaching out with this scope of sound and deft command of his hands that's simply breathtaking – matched by energy from Pullen that really surpasses some of his later work too – almost Cecil Taylor-like vibes at points, mixed with other elements that are in a more familiar mode for the pianist. The set features five long improvisations, each a numbered variant with the title "PG". Great gatefold package – with images of some of the hand-painted covers that Graves used for his releases! CD

Stax/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD & 7 inch ... $46.99 59.99
An incredible tribute to the genius of Memphis Soul legend Issac Hayes – one that's overflowing with unreleased material, and presented in a totally cool package! The set's shaped like a 7" single box – and is book-like, with very detailed notes by Stax historian Robert Gordon, alongside page after page of vintage photos and other cool images, too. And inside some of the pages are 4 super-cool CDs – each of which has a different theme that further exposes Ike's genius! CD1 is titled "Soul Songwriter Soul Producer" – and features two dozen tracks that Hayes handled for Stax/Volt – material by The Astors, Danny White, David Porter, Floyd Newman, Johnnie Taylor, Charlie Rich, Judy Clay, The Charmels, Soul Children, Billy Eckstine, The Emotions, Ruby Johnson, and others. CD2 is titled "Volt & Enterprise Singles" – and features all the 7" tracks released by Isaac Hayes during his time on those labels – including two tracks done as a duet with David Porter, two more as Sir Isaac & The Do-Dads, and even a rare Radio Spot too! Things really get interesting on CD3, titled "Cover Man" – which features those cool, long extrapolations of other folks' songs that Hayes pioneered on his albums – but included here with unreleased material too. There's a great never-heard take on "Windows Of The World" – plus unreleased PUSH Black Expo material from 1970 – live takes on "Ten Commandments Of Love", "Just Want To Make Love To You/Rock Me Baby", "I Stand Accused", and "Stormy Monday". CD4 is maybe the coolest of the bunch – titled "Jam Master", with those long grooves that Ike did in the studio while putting together records. Almost all the tracks on CD4 are previously unissued – including "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Black Militant's Place", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Do Your Thing (extended jam)", "Groove A Thon (extended jam)", and "Hung Up On My Baby (extended jam)". And if all that isn't enough, the set even comes with a cool 7" replica of Ike's first single for the Youngstown label – "Laura We're On Our First Go-Round". CD

A cooker from DC tenorist Buck Hill – one of those great local players who never got their due strongly until late in life! Buck's got a tremendous sound on his horn – full and rich in feeling, with occasional raspy edges that really grab us, and a warm command of his instrument that really belies his many decades in music. Yet Buck's also not just blowing familiar notes, either – and, like Von Freeman out of Chicago, he's a dedicatedly creative player who keeps things on edge throughout the set, even in familiar territory. The approach is a bit like that of Ben Webster late in life, but sharper overall – and the group on the date includes Barry Harris on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums. A great title for this album from Bobby Hutcherson – given the way he commands such great tones from his work on the vibes! The album's a real gem from his Landmark Records years – that great back-to-basics point when Bobby was almost doing more by doing less – especially in a record with understated brilliance like this. The group's a warmly sensitive one – with Mulgrew Miller on piano, John Heard on bass, Airto on percussion, and Billy Higgins on drums – a perfect rhythmic accompaniment for Hutcherson's hip vibes. Titles include "Rosemary Rosemary", "Remember", "Never Let Me Go", "Recorda Me", "Bemsha Swing", and "Whisper Not". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hank JonesJazz Trio Of Hank Jones ... CD
Savoy/Nippon (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99
Rock-solid trio work from the Hank Jones group of the 50s – a combo that includes Hank on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The group was the rhythm section on countless dates for Savoy Records at the time, but here they're featured strongly on their own – as a very dynamic outfit that features great interplay between Jones' warm, lyrical approach to the piano – and Kenny Clarke's amazing command of his drum kit! The tunes are often nicely subtle – and Jones is never as over the top as some of his 50s contemporaries, but really manages to show a tremendous ear for a well-crafted line – one that's rompingly rhythmic, but often in somewhat gentle ways. Titles include "Odd Number", "Cyrano", "There's A Small Hotel", "Little Girl Blue", and "We're All Together". CD

Jack JonesMy Kind Of Town ... LP
Kapp, 1965. Near Mint- ... $1.99
My Kind Of Town is a set that's pulled from sessions recorded over a few years in the early 60s – under the direction of arrangers Glenn Osser, Don Costa, and Marty Paich – all of whom bring a slightly different twist to his music! The styles are a bit varied, but in a way that shows Jack's great command of many modes – and given that there's a three-year duration between the first recording and the last on the set, the record acts almost like a portrait of Jones' evolution during the time. Titles include "Yes I Can", "I'm All Smiles", "Time After Time", "King Of The Road", "Travellin On", "My Kind Of Town", and "Somewhere Along The Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby KeysBobby Keys ... LP
Warner/Aurora, 1972. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A really cool album from saxophonist Bobby Keys – a record with no vocals at all, just Bobby's solos – but a set that's maybe better tagged as instrumental rock than jazz, given the heavyweight guest musicians in the lineup! Keys blows with an all-star array of talent from the rock scene of the time – including Jack Bruce and Felix Pappalardi on bass, Leslie West and Dave Mason on guitars, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, and Ringo Starr on drums – plus a bit more guitar from George Harrison, too! Yet what's great about the record is that all these talents put aside their ego and follow Bobby's lead – in a groove that's maybe a bit southern soul, a bit down-home rock – with some definite currents of Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the music. Titles include "Crispy Duck", "Steal From A King", "Bootleg", "Smokefoot", "Altar Rock", "Command Performance", and "Sound & Foam". LP, Vinyl record album

Krakow Improvisers OrchestraKIO At Cricoteka ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2018. New Copy ... $13.99
A large group with a really strong command of their sound – so much so that at points the full frenzy of all members seems to pack this really enormous punch, before getting balanced from more personal, individual moments in music! The idea of an improvisers orchestra is nothing new, but these guys definitely have a sound that's all their own – a really fresh variation on the concept, which comes in part from the mix of instrumentation in the lineup. Players include Liliana Zieniawa on vibes, Patryk Zakrocki on viola, Marcin Bozek on French horn, Tomek Choloniewski on percussion, Marta Dramowicz on electronics, Mawina Kolodziejczyk on tenor, Paulina Owczarek on alto, Sebastian Mac on guitar, and both Ernest Ogorek and Adam Stodolski on bass. Owczarek conducts, Adam Nyk provides a bit of voice, and the long performance runs for over 40 minutes, divided into three sections. CD

LakesideYour Wish Is My Command/Keep On Moving Straight Ahead/Untouchables (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A trio of classic albums from Lakeside – representing the second slice of their work for the Solar Records label! First up is Your Wish Is My Command – great stuff from the glory days of the LA bass-pedal funk era! The tracks manage to mix an 80s groove and soul without sounding cloying, and the band's vocals are always better than we remember them – with a strong harmony sound in the best moments that keeps things real. Tracks include "Your Wish Is My Command", "The Urban Man", "I'll Be Standing By", "Special", and "Magic Moments". Keep On Moving Straight Ahead is a really well-titled album from the mighty Lakeside – as the record makes you think that the group were going to keep on going for many years – working in their own unique version of earlier funk modes – almost a tightening up of the Funkadelic style of the late 70s! The basslines are very much in charge, but like the George Clinton groups, they also have a great way of really bringing everything together at once – sly vocals, riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and everything else that comes to groove – all hitting right on the money on titles that include "It's You", "Be My Lady", "All For You", "Anything For You", and "We Want You (On The Floor)". For Untouchables, the gangster image on the cover might be a tipoff to the sound – as Lakeside help forge the roots of g-funk with their classic bass-heavy sound on the album! The record's great – every bit as funky as previous Lakeside work in all the right parts, but also showing a greater development of the group past their funk roots – able to mix mellower moments with groovers, at that sublime level that Fatback hit when the 80s began! There's plenty of greatness here for everyone – and titles include "Real Love", "Untouchable", "So Let's Love", "Turn The Music Up", and "Raid". Bonus tracks include "Keep On Moving Straight Ahead (12" version)", "Raid (7" version)", "We Want You On The Floor (7" version)", "Turn The Music Up (inst dub)", and "Turn The Music Up (7" version)". A great session that was recorded in Tokyo in 1973 – featuring Abbey backed by a small group that includes Dave Liebman on sax and flute, Al Foster on drums, and Hiromasa Suzuki on piano. The record's pretty darn hip – and it's a nice version of Abbey's haunting approach to vocal jazz, touched by some of the new directions vocalists were going at the time, yet firmly rooted in the firm command of voice and emotion heard on Lincoln's best records from the early 60s. Titles include "Africa", "You & Me & Love", "Naturally", "Living Room", and "Natas", which seems to have Abbey singing along with overdubs of her own voice, to very cool effect! CD

A rare second chapter to Mobley's famous Workout album – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until the mid 80s – and even then, only momentarily on vinyl! The session's a great one – a quartet outing with a structure that's similar to Hank's classic Soul Station record, but which is a bit more fluid and free-thinking overall! The long tracks give Mobley plenty of room to open up on his solos – really commanding the record with his deeply soulful tone and strong sense of timing. Other players include Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums (plus Grant Green on one track) – and titles include "Out Of Joe's Bag", "I Should Care", "Getting & Jettin", "Hank's Other Soul", and "Three Coins In A Fountain". We couldn't think of a better title for this one – as every track is a winner! Lee Morgan on the hippest side of his 60s talents – working here in a style that's really stretching out, and in the same territory as similar unreleased gems from the time – like Tom Cat or Sonic Boom! The group here is very inventive – Jackie McLean on alto, Larry Willis on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – players who really represent the left side of Blue Note, but not as out as the "new thing" crowd – with a really creative approach to both the rhythms and the solos, commanded by Morgan's rich imagination at this point in his career. All tunes are great, and titles include "Zip Code", "Infinity", "Miss Nettie B", "Growing Pains", and McLean's fantastic "Portrait of a Doll". CD

Johnny NashVery Best Of Johnny Nash 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
A big overview of the early work of Johnny Nash – a singer that most folks know for a huge crossover radio hit in the early 70s, but who got his start much earlier, through years of recording for ABC Records! The label really saw the young Nash as a singer to challenge Nat King Cole or Johnny Mathis – and he definitely does a great job in the territory of both here, but also really finds his own space too – eventually ending up more as a precursor to the sorts of 60s male singers who were adept at more heartbreaking material, ala Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson. Arrangements are large and rich, often with a bit of vocals behind the lead of Nash – on 31 tracks that include "Moment Of Weakness", "Love's Young Dream", "Too Much Love", "World Of Tears", "Kisses", "The End Of The World", "Almost In Your Arms", "Roots Of Heaven", "The Wish", "Too Proud", and "Take A Giant Step" – plus the unusual "Teen Commandments", done with Paul Anka and George Hamilton IV! ✨✧ Oliver NelsonStolen Moments ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last sessions Oliver Nelson ever recorded – a genius batch of work recorded for the Japanese East Wind label, and maybe one of his greatest albums ever! The set's a wonderful link between the sophisticated large group sounds that Nelson did for Impulse Records in the 60s, and some of the more expansive styles he was trying out on the Flying Dutchman imprint in the 70s – a batch of work that both has that sense of majesty that Nelson could command at his best, but which still retains an earthy vibe overall. The group is great – with soulful work from Bobby Bryant on trumpet, Jerome Richardson on soprano sax and flute, Buddy Collette on tenor and flute, and Jack Nimitz on baritone – and the rhythm section has some great Fender Rhodes from Mike Wofford, given more push from the electric bass of Chuck Dominico, and some open-ended drum work from Shelly Manne. Titles include a wonderful remake of Nelson's "Stolen Moments", the groover "Mission Accomplished", and the tracks "St Thomas", "Three Seconds", and "Yearnin". CD

Awesome Tapes From Africa, 1996. New Copy ... $12.99
The strong second album from Penny Penny – a set that has the South African singer emerging as even more of a superstar than before – as you might guess from his look on the cover! The style is this unique blend of older South African vocal modes with more contemporary club elements – particular some of the deeper bass bits introduced by the house music generation – used here in ways that are slower than house, but definitely echo the same way – especially with the lower-end pulsations of the keyboard! Penny Penny has this very commanding way of calling out a tune – the sort that made him a big draw across the African concert scene during the decade – on titles that include "Yogo Yogo", "Ibola Aids", "Ingani", "Amarumasi", "Ama Owners", "Ti Samboko", and "Kulani Kulani". Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". Roulette/EMI, 1947/1953. Used ... $4.99
Seminal sounds from the great Bud Powell – recorded right at an early moment when the pianist was bursting into Birdland fame – working here with a key trio that features Curley Russell on bass and a young Max Roach on drums! Bud seems to have a bit more color in his keys here than in later years – a sense of tone that's balanced by his increasingly deft flights on the keys – that amazing command of imagination and energy that makes a record like this one of the best bold statements of modernism from the bop generation. Many tunes are older standards, but transformed in Bud's hands – partly given a nod to the midtown modes from other players of the postwar years, then completely dismantled once the solos take off. Titles include "Buds Bubble", "Burt Covers Bud", "Off Minor", "I Should Care", "I'll Remember April", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD features 16 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". A soaring blend of Brazilian modes – served up here by Ricardo Richaid, who's almost a one-man army himself, given the amount of instruments he plays on the set! Yet the record is also way more than just a batch of tunes cooked up in a bedroom – as Richaid has collaborators on nearly every track – which expands his own work on piano, bass, and a variety of guitars – really helping to situation his raspy and compelling vocals amidst some jazzier touches on flute and tenor, guest vocals, percussion, and other elements along the way! The tunes are often really catchy and compelling, even if your command of Portuguese is as bad as ours – and it's clear that Ricardo really knows his way around a hook, in sort of a universal way – while still making music that's completely his own. Titles include "Drone", "Vip Xuxa", "Maracas Enterprise/Frio Da Manha", "Ave Poena", "O Velho Cai", and "Formigas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ScofieldLive (Enja) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The young John Scofield is a player with an amazing command of chromes – this way of putting forth all these new changes in jazz, and really transforming the role of the guitar in the music with important 70s records like this! Scofield's part of a generation who maybe came to jazz while also very aware of the use of the instrument in rock – but he also never plays with any sound that's rock-based at all, unlike some of his electric contemporaries – and instead moves the instrument past some of the clean tonal modes of the early years of jazz guitar, into a fiercer, fuzzier mode – one that can be both sinister at times, and soulful at others. All tracks here are nice and long, and augmented by excellent work from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums – on the titles "V", "Gray & Visceral", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Leaving". CD also features the tracks "Jeanie" and "Air Pakistan". CD

Stan Seltzer TrioStan Seltzer Piano ... LP
Hi Fi, 1957. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Stan Seltzer's a great talent on the keys of the piano – one who's clearly got some high-end training somewhere back in his career, but who also manages to keep things nice and lean in this small combo set! The album's the only one we've seen by Seltzer – a well-recorded date for the Hi Fi label in LA – with backing from Red Mitchell on bass and Frank Hudec on drums, and an overall sound that's rich in feeling, but never too flowery or overly emotive. Stan's got a great command of the piano – flowing across the keys with a rich understanding of its tones – and he brings out a sound here that's way more than just simple cocktail tinkling, and which almost has the evocative power of a deeper soundtrack score of the time. Titles include "A Foggy Day", "Crissy's Blues", "Speak Low", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Let's Fall In Love", and "Easy To Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Silver label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear and aging, small seam splits, and a pencil mark on front.)

✨✧ Bernie Senesky/Gene Perla/Doug RileyInvitation ... CD
PM/Solid (Japan), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from Bernie Senesky – a Canadian pianist who doesn't always get the recognition he deserves on this side of the border, but who can always blow us away! Bernie's got a fantastic command of the piano – this bold, wide range at times – but also with more lyrically sensitive moments too – a balance of energy that always keeps things exciting, and which comes across with a sense of warmth that's really wonderful. The trio features the mighty Gene Perla on bass and Ben Riley on drums – really matching Bernie's groove – and titles include "Bill's Waltz", "Old Folks", "Invitation", "Come To Me", "Blues For EJ", "Bud Lines", and "Young & Foolish". Johnny SmithJohnny Smith Plus The Trio ... LP
Roost, 1960. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A trio is helping out guitarist Johnny Smith – but, as with all of his other Roost Records of the time, the man himself is very far out in the lead – making real magic on the strings of his guitar, and playing with an effortless command of tone and color! Some moments of the record actually have a bit more of an uptempo swing than other of Johnny's albums of the period – but others are a masterpiece is gentle harmonics – those incredible notes that Smith almost seemed to invent for jazz guitar in the 50s – and which seem to come through even more beautifully in the sparest of settings. The trio features Bob Pancoast on piano, Mousie Alexander on drums, and George Roumanis on bass – and titles include "Hippo", "Out Of Nowhere", "Un Poco Loco", "I Got It Bad", "Let's Fall In Love", "Over The Rainbow", and "I Can't Get Started". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorWorld Of Cecil Taylor ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. Used ... $8.99
Cecil Taylor's first LP for the Candid label – and a landmark album that really lets him open up for the first time in years at a recording session! The album was cut at Nola's Penthouse in 1960, and the core group is Cecil's trio with Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles on drums – but Archie Shepp joins the group on tenor on two tracks, "Air" and "Lazy Afternoon". The remaining three have a sound that's not always heard on other Taylor albums from the 60s – a bit bluesy, with playing that might be called a bit "straight", but which also shows Cecil's command of the jazz idiom in a mode that allows keen comparison with other players of his generation. Titles include "EB", "This Nearly Was Mine", and "Port Of Call". CD

Prestige, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Lucky Thompson's mid 60s years – that wonderful time when he'd returned to the fold even stronger than ever – filled with hip new musical ideas, and a great command for the soprano sax! This set's got Lucky working on both soprano and tenor, both of which are handled with these angular, soulful tones that are totally great – right at home in a group that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums – all marvelously sensitive rhythm accompanists. Jack Melady adds harp on 2 tracks on the set – a very nice touch – and titles include "Safari", "Cry Me A River", "People", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As Time Goes By". ✨✧ Alexander Von Schlippenbach QuartetThree Nails Left ... CD
FMP/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing work from this seminal group on the FMP scene – a quartet led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, but equally balanced between the saxes of Evan Parker, bass of Peter Kowald, and percussion of Paul Lovens! We're not sure how much to take the "nails" in the title seriously, but it does sound as if Schlippenbach is playing prepared piano at times – or perhaps his command of the keyboard is just so strong, he can make other-worldly elements come from the instrument whenever he wants! Much of the music has a full-on FMP intensity – that non-stop, sonically adventurous quality inherited from Machine Gun – spun out over three great live improvisations, titled "Range", "Black Holes", and "Three Nails Left". ✨✧ Cedar WaltonCedar Walton At Pit Inn ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from the great Cedar Walton trio that featured Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – a really beautiful group of musicians who completely transformed the sound of the piano trio in the 70s! The group played together often in the 70s, and they've never sounded better than on an album like this – freely soulful and dancing, with Walton in firm command of his talents – sometimes coming on with the strength of his early 60s material, but always opening up with a more exploratory vibe too. Walton worked often in this mode for the decades that followed this set – but this Japanese album is almost the start of that great legacy, and still one of the best from this group! Titles include "Con Alma", "Suite Sunday", "Suntory Blues", and "Fantasy In D". CD

Jack WhiteBoarding House Reach ... LP
Third Man, 2018. Sealed ... $16.99
Jack White following his farthest reaching eclectic tendencies wherever they'll lead him – as has been his modus operandi for years – but this time farther away from the raging, if still pretty idiosyncratic guitar rock of Lazzaretto and much of his past catalog to a more wildly diverse, intentionally all over the place sound! Starting with a rock & soul anthem complete with a gospel style chorus that leads to a leaner synth rock ballad, Boarding House Reach reaches from there to call-and-response funk rock, to folk soul hybrids, to straighter hard grooving rock and beyond. 13 tracks in all: "Connected By Love", "Why Walk A Dog?", "Corporation", "Abulia And Akrasia", "Hypermisophoniac", "Ice Station Zebra", "Over And Over And Over", "Respect Commando", "What's Done Is Done", "Humoresque" and more. ✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – The Dynamic Label ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's a sweet image on the cover – and the grooves inside are equally dynamic too – a really wonderful collection that's easily one of the most compelling in Numero's Eccentric Soul series! The work here all hails from the tiny San Antonio scene of the late 60s – but much of the music has a sound that's way different than you might expect from Texas soul – often with great harmonies that recall the best of the east coast groups of the time, and occasionally with a few brown-eyed touches that echo the style of East LA! There's a wonderfully heartbreaking feel to many of these tracks – and the set's heavy focus on mellower numbers is totally great – and gives the whole thing a wonderful late nite sort of vibe that's usually quite hard to find in compilations like this. As usual, Numero's done a great job with the notes and history of the label – but the music alone is more than enough – a heady brew of cuts that include "Little Girl Blue" and "Try Loving Me" by The Webs, "I Gotta Know" by Tonettes, "Give Your Love To Me" and "Ain't No Big Thing" by Little Jr Jesse & The Tear Drops, "Cry & Wonder Why" by Doc & Sal, "Must Be Alright" and "Hey It's Love" by The Commands, "She's Gotta Have Soul" by Bobby Blackmon & The Soul Express, and "I Can't Take No More" by Willie Cooper & The Webs. Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... $29.99
Funky female pop from the Japanese scene of the 70s – served up in a mix of rock, pop, and disco styles! The music here has a bit more polish than some of the previous titles in the Queen Of Japanese Pops series – more studio 70s than the garagey styles heard on other collections – but the overall feel is equally trashy, and like before, comes with some really great packaging that's filled with vintage images! You might need to know Japanese to get the most out of the lyrics, but there's a charm here that's universal too – compellingly catchy girl pop, often presented with weird instrumental twists and turns, and a nice undercurrent of funk in some of the rhythms. 19 tracks in all – with all artists and titles listed in Japanese! Charly (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A searing set of vintage soul cuts – brought together in honor of the legendary Wigan Casino – one of the most important clubs in the UK Northern Soul scene of the 70s! For the uninitiated, Wigan was a hotbed of upbeat rare soul cuts – overlooked American goodies from both the previous decade and more recent years – often with a strong focus on deeper soul vocals, which meant some strong entries from the southern scene as well! This well-done package comes with a heavy book-style cover, notes on the club and its music – and a whopping 28 tracks in all – including "I Can't Hide It" by The Appreciations, "Baby What Has Happened To Our Love" by The Ringleaders, "The Night The Angels Cried" by Johnny Dynamite, "I'm A Teardrop" by The Jerms, "Your Love Makes Me Lonely" by The Chandlers, "Watch Yourself" by Tony Hester, "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is" by Copper & Brass, "Can I Be Dreamin" by The Young Savages, "She's Fire" by The CODs, "Could It Be" by Mikki Farrow, and "Your Wish Is My Command" by The Inspirations.
