✨✧ Luis VaronaCommand Performance – Luis Varona Returns To The World Famous Eden Roc ... LP
Exodus/Vee Jay, 1966. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few albums cut by this great Latin pianist – a follow-up to his famous Fiesta Night at Eden Roc, issued earlier on both the Gone and Tico labels, and still one of the all-time Latin rarities on wax! This set has a similar spirit – as Luis' group plays with a hard percussive sound, very well suited to his firey piano work, peppered by some very cool vocalizations, and choppy melodies that really keep things spicey! Titles include "Porto Diablo", "Whistling Cha", "Moods", "Anabacoa", "Toca Un Son", "Cuando Cuando", and "Sabroso Guajira", which has some nice vibes. LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Exodus pressing. Cover has a tiny split on the top seam, but is great overall.)

Four TopsMain Street People ... LP
ABC, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People". ✨✧ Benny GolsonOne More Mem'ry (Timeless) ... LP
Timeless (Holland), 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A really beautiful session from Benny Golson – and proof that, throughout the years, Golson could always continue to turn out wonderful material! Benny's working here with old bandmate Curtis Fuller on trombone – and the pair are supported by a trio who include Bill Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – all held wonderfully in command by Golson, who's working here with a tightness that recalls Jazztet years, yet which also has him and Fuller opening up in nice long solos. There's a sense of warmth here that crackles wonderfully – that raspy Golson tone that we first grew to love in the late 50s, and which has only deepened with age by this point. The set includes the wonderful original tune "One More Mem'ry", plus great versions of Golson's "Sad To Say", "Touch Me Lightly", "Five Spot After Dark", "Once Again", and "Out Of The Past". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some clear tape on the seams.)

Johnny GriffinNight Lady ... LP
EmArcy, 1964. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A rare European gem from Johnny Griffin – recorded in quartet formation with backing from the rhythm trio of the Clarke Boland Big Band! Johnny was working with the trio in the bigger group at the time, but he gets plenty of space to state his case here – stretching out on hard-bitten, almost-modern solos that are some of his most adventurous to date on record – supported strongly on the album's longish tracks by Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! There's a quality to Griffin's tone that's incredible – urgent, edgey, but never too far out – completely in command of itself, and able to run free, but without wasting at note at all – unlike some of his over-stretched European solos of later years. The set features beautiful long readings of Boland's "Night Lady" and "Old Stuff", plus Griffin's "Scrabble", and versions of "Summertime", "All The Things You Are", and "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono grey label pressing with deep groove. Cover has minimal wear and aging.)

✨✧ Sheila Jordan & Arild AndersenSheila ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

✨✧ Abbey LincolnPeople In Me ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
A great session that was recorded in Tokyo in 1973 – featuring Abbey backed by a small group that includes Dave Liebman on sax and flute, Al Foster on drums, and Hiromasa Suzuki on piano. The record's pretty darn hip – and it's a nice version of Abbey's haunting approach to vocal jazz, touched by some of the new directions vocalists were going at the time, yet firmly rooted in the firm command of voice and emotion heard on Lincoln's best records from the early 60s. Titles include "Africa", "You & Me & Love", "Naturally", "Living Room", and "Natas", which seems to have Abbey singing along with overdubs of her own voice, to very cool effect! (Cover has a cut corner.)

MoonglowsTheir Greatest Sides ... LP
Chess, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
We couldn't think of a better title for this one – as every track is a winner! The Moonglows are, to us, doo wop at its best – hanging here between the rough styles of earlier years, and the overproduced work of later ones. The group are working near accapella here – with just a bit of rhythmic backing and guitar – in a style that glides with effortless magic that few other groups, no matter how great, could ever hope to match! Titles include "Ten Commandments Of Love", "In My Diary", "Sincerely", "Blue Velvet", "Penny Arcade", "Over & Over Again", and the sublime "Most Of All". LP, Vinyl record album

Bud PowellBud Powell Trio ... LP
Roost (Japan), 1958. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Seminal sounds from the great Bud Powell – recorded right at an early moment when the pianist was bursting into Birdland fame – working here with a key trio that features Curley Russell on bass and a young Max Roach on drums! Bud seems to have a bit more color in his keys here than in later years – a sense of tone that's balanced by his increasingly deft flights on the keys – that amazing command of imagination and energy that makes a record like this one of the best bold statements of modernism from the bop generation. Many tunes are older standards, but transformed in Bud's hands – partly given a nod to the midtown modes from other players of the postwar years, then completely dismantled once the solos take off. Titles include "Buds Bubble", "Burt Covers Bud", "Off Minor", "I Should Care", "I'll Remember April", and "Everything Happens To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Older Japanese pressing, in a flipback cover. Cover has some light aging on the back, and a small bit of Japanese text in pen.)

Verve, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Mort Sahl may never have made it to the presidency (his criticism of the Warren Report may have had something to do with that) – but his command of politics was stronger than most in his generation, and his razor-sharp wit was always spot-on! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mos DefSex, Love & Money (radio, inst, LP)/Ghetto Rock (radio, inst, LP) ... 12-inch
Geffen, 2004. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two great tracks that show that Mos is tip-top form when he wants to hip hop – even though they come from an album that in many ways steers clear of straight hip hop! "Sex, Love & Money" finds Mos laying back, rolling, and scatting off the wordplay with a cool presence – commanding the track with confidence and a sly subtlety. The beats by Warryn Campbell leave room for a great flute line on the beat. "Ghetto Rock" is not what you'd expect – r.e. the "Rock & Roll" track from Black On Both Sides. It's another sly track, with hazy psych beats and echoey vocals, produced by Minnesota. These two tracks comprise the the best of the hip hop tracks from the wildly diverse New Danger LP. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo in a stickered sleeve.)

✨✧ Johnny SmithJohnny Smith Plus The Trio ... LP
Roost, 1960. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio is helping out guitarist Johnny Smith – but, as with all of his other Roost Records of the time, the man himself is very far out in the lead – making real magic on the strings of his guitar, and playing with an effortless command of tone and color! Some moments of the record actually have a bit more of an uptempo swing than other of Johnny's albums of the period – but others are a masterpiece is gentle harmonics – those incredible notes that Smith almost seemed to invent for jazz guitar in the 50s – and which seem to come through even more beautifully in the sparest of settings. The trio features Bob Pancoast on piano, Mousie Alexander on drums, and George Roumanis on bass – and titles include "Hippo", "Out Of Nowhere", "Un Poco Loco", "I Got It Bad", "Let's Fall In Love", "Over The Rainbow", and "I Can't Get Started". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorWorld Of Cecil Taylor ... LP
Candid, 1960. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cecil Taylor's first LP for the Candid label – and a landmark album that really lets him open up for the first time in years at a recording session! The album was cut at Nola's Penthouse in 1960, and the core group is Cecil's trio with Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles on drums – but Archie Shepp joins the group on tenor on two tracks, "Air" and "Lazy Afternoon". The remaining three have a sound that's not always heard on other Taylor albums from the 60s – a bit bluesy, with playing that might be called a bit "straight", but which also shows Cecil's command of the jazz idiom in a mode that allows keen comparison with other players of his generation. Titles include "EB", "This Nearly Was Mine", and "Port Of Call". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing,w ith insert. Cover has some light fading near the spine, but is nice overall.)
