✨✧ Celio BalonaBalona Espetacular ... CD
Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spectacular organ from Celio Balona – a Brazilian keyboardist from the 60s, but one who's maybe a bit different than some of his contemporaries – as the range of tones and other sonic elements is nicely mixed up to really fit the spirit of the tunes – which include early numbers by Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, and Chico Buarque – and not just the usual pop instrumental songs you'd hear on other records like this! Most of the backing seems to be from a small combo with nicely snapping drums – and Balona's command of his instrument is great, and includes plenty of basslines from the bottom that really make the best tunes groove – in a lineup that includes "Vesti Azul", "Carolina", "Alegria Alegria", "Manifesto", "Travessia", "Maria Carnaval E Cinzas", and "Meu Grito". ✨✧ Basso Valdambrini QuintetBasso Valdambrini Quintet (Verve) ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sharp-edged session of tremendous trumpet and tenor interplay – served up by the legendary quintet of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini! The album's got a sound that's as hip as it looks – a great approach to 50s modern jazz, done in a style that's equally influenced by west coast cool and east coast hardbop! Valdambrini's trumpet is beautifully measured throughout – with echoes of both Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker – offset by some deeper grooving on tenor from Basso, who plays with a strength and command that few American players of the time could match. Titles include "Come Out Wherever You Are", "Lo Struzzo Oscar", "Lotar", "Gone With The Wind", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", and "Fan Tan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing with deep groove. Back cover has a small name, but this is a nice copy overall.)

Body 11Youth ... LP
Medical, Mid 80s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A one-man German operation from the mid-80s – but one with a punchy approach that rivals some of the better electro pop from the Euro scene at the time! Body 11 only ever issued a 7" EP back in the day, plus a handful of cuts on cassette – but the sound here really recalls those great early 80s moments when older, colder groups like Cabaret Voltaire or Human League found a way to get more tuneful – yet still hold onto most of the edge that made them so great. Had Body 11 issued these cuts in early 80s Sheffield or Manchester, he might well have broken big – but it's also the mystery of these obscure tracks that keeps the record really interesting too. Instrumentation includes lots of Yamaha, Korg, and Roland electronics – and titles include "Wasteland 2", "Under My Command", "Just A Smile", "Marching", "Hearts", and "Fascination". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Buckner & Jo JonesBuck & Jo (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic pairing of talents – brought together here in a set of recordings that features way more material than we ever knew the duo recorded! The massive 4CD package is focused on spare duets between drummer Jo Jones and organist Milt Buckner – both American jazz musicians from a slightly earlier age, given a chance to really stretch out in a great way during the early 70s – taken into the studio by producer Hugues Panassie, in a mode that's free from any restrictions or commercial trappings at all! Both musicians can really do a lot with a little – especially Buckner, whose Hammond almost always sounds better without a larger group alongside him – because you can really hear his great command of the keys and pedals, and his amazing ear for a very wide range of sounds. The package features 42 tracks in all – some of them nice and long – with titles that include "Blues For Diane", "Am I Blue", "Pick Yourself Up", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Smoke Rings", "Madeline's Garden", "Anna Ryan", "Cute", "Count's Basement", "Perdido", "Three Little Words", "It Happened In Monterey", "That's All", and "Believe It Beloved". ✨✧ Sonny ClarkSonny's Crib (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard-slamming genius from pianist Sonny Clark – one of his greatest albums for Blue Note, and a real cooker that's served up with an all-star group! Clark's vision has never been tighter or fuller than on this album – save, perhaps, for the magnificent Cool Struttin – and his command as a leader is impeccable, effortlessly shaping the horns of Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, and John Coltrane to realize his unique vision in music. Rhythm is by Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and titles include classics like "News for Lulu" and "Sonny's Crib", plus smoking renditions of "Speak Low" and "With a Song in My Heart". ✨✧ Miles Davis with John ColtraneSwiss Radio Days Vol 31 – Recorded Live In Zurich 1960 ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1960. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A classic Miles Davis group – captured here in 1960 with incredible sound! The format is wonderful – as the tracks are quite long, and allow for lots of space for long trumpet solos from Miles, and tenor from John Coltrane – both supported beautifully by the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums! Coltrane's definitely in fine form – and has this commanding way of playing that almost blows away Davis – especially since Miles usually starts out most numbers here on his own, then lets Coltrane come in second – a move that almost makes the trumpet dim by comparison. Titles include "Fran Dance", "So What", "All Blues/Bye Bye", and "If I Were A Bell". CD

Hamilton De Holanda & Orquestra Do Mato GrossoAlegria ... CD
Brasilianos (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
One of the most playful albums we've ever heard from Hamilton De Holanda – a set that features the master instrumentalist on 10 string bandolim, in front of some larger orchestrations – but on tunes that are pulled from a variety of pop culture sources, including some surprising entries from cartoons and video games! Hamilton's command of his instrument is still fantastic – beautifully expressive, and always doing a heck of a lot with just a little – and the larger orchestrations are thoughtfully handled by Leandro Carvalho, in a way that never dims the presence of the lead instrument, but instead inflects its sound with just the right sense of color and space. Titles include "Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo", "A Pantera Cor De Rosa", "Super Mario Brothers", "Os Flinstones", "Vida Alegria E Esperanca", and "Dorme Com Os Anjos". CD

El RegoEl Rego ... LP
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". Knitting Factory, 1989/1990. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A strong return to a classic 70s Afro Funk groove from Fela! The CD features tracks from 2 albums – "Beasts Of No Nation" and "Overtake Don Overtake Overtake" – both 30 minute long tracks recorded at the end of the 80s, when Fela was getting back to his roots, but exercising even more musical command than in previous years. The tracks both build and build over an extended groove, starting out with spare percussion, adding in more, slowly peppering the mix with horns and keyboards, until the lyrics come in towards the end of the song. Great stuff – and proof that he never let his fire die! CD

✨✧ FME (Ken Vandermark)Cuts ... CD
Okka Disk, 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Powerful work from the Free Music Ensemble of Ken Vandermark, Paal Nilssen-Love, and Nate McBride – a set recorded in Oslo with the intensity of some of the older power trio sessions from the Scandinavian scene! Vandermark, as always, is a commanding presence on reeds – blowing with all the capable imagination of previous albums, but always deepening in tone with each new release – and Paal Nilssen-Love's drums are fast, frenetic, yet always nicely pulsating – giving a sense of energy to the album that pushes the whole thing along nicely, but never exhausts its imagination. McBride's bass gets some nice moments of quieter sonic presence – and titles include "Necessary/Reset/Slip", "Other Side Up/Boadas", "Heavy Light", and "Broken". CD

Ryo FukuiScenery (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $22.99
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You" – plus 2 bonus tracks, "Mellow Dream" and "Horizon", both original compositions! Johnny GriffinNight Lady ... LP
EmArcy, 1964. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A rare European gem from Johnny Griffin – recorded in quartet formation with backing from the rhythm trio of the Clarke Boland Big Band! Johnny was working with the trio in the bigger group at the time, but he gets plenty of space to state his case here – stretching out on hard-bitten, almost-modern solos that are some of his most adventurous to date on record – supported strongly on the album's longish tracks by Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! There's a quality to Griffin's tone that's incredible – urgent, edgey, but never too far out – completely in command of itself, and able to run free, but without wasting at note at all – unlike some of his over-stretched European solos of later years. The set features beautiful long readings of Boland's "Night Lady" and "Old Stuff", plus Griffin's "Scrabble", and versions of "Summertime", "All The Things You Are", and "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Tom HarrellMoving Picture ... CD
High Note, 2017. Used ... $9.99
Tremendous work from trumpeter Tom Harrell – a musician who's been making records for decades, but just seems to sound better and better as the years go on! Tom's always been wonderful, but a record like this seems to have him on fire with a whole new sense of purpose – a fresh musical mission, even at a time when he could easily sit back and rest on his laurels – really soaring out in a range of beautiful new compositions, and working in this soulful quartet that includes excellent piano from Danny Grissett, plus bass from Ugonna Okegwo and drums from Adam Cruz. Harrell's command of his trumpet and flugelhorn is amazing – fresh sounds, fresh tones, fresh lines that continue to hold us rapt throughout – on titles that include "Time Passage", "Montego Bay", "Moving Picture", "Apple House", "Sea", "Four The Moment", and "Different Clouds". The album's a real gem from his Landmark Records years – that great back-to-basics point when Bobby was almost doing more by doing less – especially in a record with understated brilliance like this. The group's a warmly sensitive one – with Mulgrew Miller on piano, John Heard on bass, Airto on percussion, and Billy Higgins on drums – a perfect rhythmic accompaniment for Hutcherson's hip vibes. Pre-moog – but still very nice, and an album of oddly-arranged tracks that features Hyman on both organ and piano! The format's a straight trio, but the arrangements open the tracks up more than you expect – and take the songs past their simple cover versions. Includes a groovy version of "Ode to Billy Joe", plus "Respect" and "Groovin" – plus more obscure tracks like "House Of Mirrors" and "The Flower Road". Command, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, grooviest moog albums you'll ever hope to buy – a wonderful foray into the new world of synthetic sounds, done by pianist Dick Hyman – who was working in a straight jazz format just a decade before! Dick turns out to be a wonderful talent on the moog – very well-suited to the record, with just the right sort of quirky, playful approach to bring the best out of the instrument – at a level that's right up there with the best by Perrey & Kingsley, and maybe even cooler – given that Dick doesn't rely nearly as much on studio tricks! All tunes are pretty bouncy, groovy, and filled with sweet moogy touches – and titles include "The Minotaur", "The Legend Of Johnny Pot", "Improvisation In Fourths", "Topless Dancers Of Corfu", and "The Moog & Me". A really wonderful live set from Japanese piano legend Fumio Itabashi – a player who exploded in the 70s with a style that was free-flowing yet very rhythmic – one of the best illustrations of the new lyrical heights of the Japanese piano scene – still sounding pretty darn wonderful here after the passage of decades! Fumio immediately takes off on the tunes – building up a sound in a mode that's maybe a bit inspired by the directions that McCoy Tyner opened up on the piano, but which also has more soul jazz currents at times too – blended together in this effortless sense of rhythm and melody that make Itabashi's command of the piano completely breathtaking, and very different than just about any other solo artist on the instrument that we can think of. The CD features six long tracks – all with titles in Japanese. CD

Rock-solid trio work from the Hank Jones group of the 50s – a combo that includes Hank on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The group was the rhythm section on countless dates for Savoy Records at the time, but here they're featured strongly on their own – as a very dynamic outfit that features great interplay between Jones' warm, lyrical approach to the piano – and Kenny Clarke's amazing command of his drum kit! The tunes are often nicely subtle – and Jones is never as over the top as some of his 50s contemporaries, but really manages to show a tremendous ear for a well-crafted line – one that's rompingly rhythmic, but often in somewhat gentle ways. Titles include "Odd Number", "Cyrano", "There's A Small Hotel", "Little Girl Blue", and "We're All Together". CD

Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A trio of classic albums from Lakeside – representing the second slice of their work for the Solar Records label! First up is Your Wish Is My Command – great stuff from the glory days of the LA bass-pedal funk era! The tracks manage to mix an 80s groove and soul without sounding cloying, and the band's vocals are always better than we remember them – with a strong harmony sound in the best moments that keeps things real. Tracks include "Your Wish Is My Command", "The Urban Man", "I'll Be Standing By", "Special", and "Magic Moments". Keep On Moving Straight Ahead is a really well-titled album from the mighty Lakeside – as the record makes you think that the group were going to keep on going for many years – working in their own unique version of earlier funk modes – almost a tightening up of the Funkadelic style of the late 70s! The basslines are very much in charge, but like the George Clinton groups, they also have a great way of really bringing everything together at once – sly vocals, riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and everything else that comes to groove – all hitting right on the money on titles that include "It's You", "Be My Lady", "All For You", "Anything For You", and "We Want You (On The Floor)". For Untouchables, the gangster image on the cover might be a tipoff to the sound – as Lakeside help forge the roots of g-funk with their classic bass-heavy sound on the album! The record's great – every bit as funky as previous Lakeside work in all the right parts, but also showing a greater development of the group past their funk roots – able to mix mellower moments with groovers, at that sublime level that Fatback hit when the 80s began! There's plenty of greatness here for everyone – and titles include "Real Love", "Untouchable", "So Let's Love", "Turn The Music Up", and "Raid". Bonus tracks include "Keep On Moving Straight Ahead (12" version)", "Raid (7" version)", "We Want You On The Floor (7" version)", "Turn The Music Up (inst dub)", and "Turn The Music Up (7" version)". The record's pretty darn hip – and it's a nice version of Abbey's haunting approach to vocal jazz, touched by some of the new directions vocalists were going at the time, yet firmly rooted in the firm command of voice and emotion heard on Lincoln's best records from the early 60s. Early jazz vocals from the Japanese scene – recorded in a late 50s stretch when the Tokyo scene was really taking off! The album's a split effort showcasing two different vocalists – Mitsuko Miyake on side one, and Kiyoko Maruyama on side two – both singers with a good command of English, and working here in modes that rival some of the best modern jazz American vocalists of the time! Miyake's got a nice depth to her tone, while Maruyama has a more lyrical trill – and the variety makes the album like finding two rare gems together at once. Miyake sings "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "Solitude", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", and "My Melancholy Baby" – and Maruyama sings "Lover Come Back To Me", "Yesterdays", "Lullaby Of Birdland", and "Moonlight In Vermont". Some of the greatest doo wop of the 50s – big hits, to be sure, but still incredible work that helped to redefine the sound of the vocal group at the time! Bobby Lester's time with the Moonglows was a really special moment for the group – a point when they started to focus their sound even more, and create that strong sense of juxtaposition and surprise that made even simple tunes sparkle with a humanity that was really wonderful. They never resorted to tricks or gimmicks in the way that some other groups did, but they managed to make each tune really come alive with their own special magic – in a sound that still explodes off a record like this years later! El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A huge amount of early work from Nana Mouskouri – a singer who looked a bit like a librarian, with glasses to match – but who managed to catapult to huge global fame in the 60s and 70s! Part of that fame was due to the fact that Nana was not only a great singer, but also graced with a strong command of other languages too – which helped her score big on charts all over Europe, and in other parts of the globe. Yet this set focuses strongly on Mouskouri's earliest work in her native Greece – with lyrics all in Greek, which may come as quite a surprise if you only know some of Nana's bigger songs in French, English, or other languages. The backings often have a nicely understated quality – some folkloric elements hitting more modern arrangements, sometimes with a great current of jazz that really lights things up – and the 3CD package features 77 tracks in all, complete with notes – selections from albums that include The Voice Of Greece, Epitaphois & More Songs Of Her Homeland, Greece Dreamland Of Desire, and Pashalies Mesa Apo Tin Nekri Gi. Steve Nelson's been one of the hippest talents on vibes for many years now – and an album like this is a great reminder of why we love his music so much! Nelson's never content to just echo the sound of previous masters of his instrument – and instead, like a rare few, he finds a way to integrate the instrument into a familiar jazz combo, but all without ever making the vibes stand in second place – really soaring out and ringing forth with a commanding power that really leaves us breathless! Here, Nelson's in some very well-matched, deeply soulful company – a killer quartet with Danny Grissett on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – superb rhythm players whose own fires rise and burn with the energy of the leader. The ballads on the record are as great as the burners – and it's the burners we love most of all – on titles that include "Eastern Joy Dance", "Soul-Leo", "Grew's Tune", "Samba D'Blue", "New Wheels", "Brothers Under The Sun", and "Melody For Mulgrew". Geffen, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
Nirvana's classic session for MTV's Unplugged – slowing down the tempo and stripping away the feedback and squalling electric guitars of their early 90s classics – as well as showing Kurt Cobain's command of cover tunes! This is a set that blew expectations right out of the water. It shows the essence of the great Cobain songwriting, as well has his gift for interpreting others – drawing parallels from Bowie, The Meat Puppets to traditional folk and blues. Amazing! Includes "About A Girl", "The Man Who Sold The World", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", "Lake Of Fire", "All Apologies", "Dumb", "Polly" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rich PerryOther Matters ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rich Perry has a great way of shaping his sounds here – sometimes rhythmically, sometimes more spatially – but all with a very distinct approach to his work on the tenor! The group is open and as fluid as the leader – Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums – all great players, but clearly driven with a sensitivity to the needs of the leader's tone, which is great – as Perry really commands a lot of attention, but without ever hitting us over the head. Part of the strength of the set is the material – all original compositions by Rich, which really suit his approach – titles that include "Other Matters", "Transparency", "Sono", "Neta", "Written Image", and "Mndfl". ✨✧ Oscar PetersonWalking The Line (Japanese pressing) ... CD
MPS (Japan), 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album with a groove as fluid as you might guess from the title – and from the nicely stretched image of Oscar Peterson on the cover! The album's one of the best-remembered from Oscar's years at MPS – a session that's got almost as much soul jazz at the bottom as it does the fluid Peterson touch on the top – and a record that benefits, no doubt, from exceptional rhythm work from the team of George Mraz on bass and Ray Price on drums, who hit a groove that's a bit more pronounced than usual. Peterson is tremendous throughout on the keys – all over the place, but always in control – really burning up the 88s with a command of his instrument that few players could match! Titles include "Just Friends", "Teach Me Tonight", "I Love You", "Once Upon A Summertime", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", and "All Of You". CD

✨✧ Oscar Peterson & Roy EldridgeOscar Peterson & Roy Eldridge ... LP
Pablo, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those great stripped-down Peterson-plus dates for Pablo Records from the 70s – a session that features Oscar on both piano and organ, working alongside the trumpet of Roy Eldridge! There's no other instrumentation at all, and the sound is completely charming – intimate without sounding too laidback – and especially nice when the organ comes in, which makes for a real change from some of the other Peterson dates of this nature. Eldridge has more than enough command of his horn to still swing mightily in the setting – and titles include "Little Jazz", "Bad Hat Blues", "Sunday", "Blues For Chu", "She's Funny That Way", and "The Way You Look Tonight". Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The only full album ever recorded by Dezi Phillips – a set issued at the end of the 80s, but with a bouncy, catchy style that recalls soul music from a few years before! Production is by Bernard Terry – who'd worked with a few other key acts before Dezi – and he brings a strong command of the studio to the record, particularly a way of mixing beats from the streets with some tighter hooks for the radio audience! Phillips' youthful presentation of the lyrics really works well for the grooves – and titles include "Fine/Fresh", "Watchin You", "Love U Forever", "This Ring Is For U", "In & Out", "Why You Wanna", and "Didn't Do It". CD features bonus cuts – "Who's That Girl", "My Kinda Girl", "Why You Wanna (ext)", "Why You Wanna (hot mix)", and "Why You Wanna (near house mix)". CD

✨✧ Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". A seminal LP of dub confrontation, where London Sound System commander Fatman pits the then up and coming Prince Jammy against relative unknown Crucial Bunny for a massive rhythm battle! Jammy and Bunny go nuts flexing their dub techniques on hard and heavy rhythms cut at Channel One and Harry J's by an all star cast of the usual suspects that includes Sly and Robbie, Fully Fullwood, Ranchie McLean, Santa Davis, Skully Sims, Jackie Mittoo, Chinna Smith and others, who keep the proceedings raw and rootsy. Ricardo RichaidTravessiero Feliz ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
A soaring blend of Brazilian modes – served up here by Ricardo Richaid, who's almost a one-man army himself, given the amount of instruments he plays on the set! Yet the record is also way more than just a batch of tunes cooked up in a bedroom – as Richaid has collaborators on nearly every track – which expands his own work on piano, bass, and a variety of guitars – really helping to situation his raspy and compelling vocals amidst some jazzier touches on flute and tenor, guest vocals, percussion, and other elements along the way! The tunes are often really catchy and compelling, even if your command of Portuguese is as bad as ours – and it's clear that Ricardo really knows his way around a hook, in sort of a universal way – while still making music that's completely his own. Titles include "Drone", "Vip Xuxa", "Maracas Enterprise/Frio Da Manha", "Ave Poena", "O Velho Cai", and "Formigas". CD

John ScofieldLive (Enja) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99
The young John Scofield is a player with an amazing command of chromes – this way of putting forth all these new changes in jazz, and really transforming the role of the guitar in the music with important 70s records like this! Scofield's part of a generation who maybe came to jazz while also very aware of the use of the instrument in rock – but he also never plays with any sound that's rock-based at all, unlike some of his electric contemporaries – and instead moves the instrument past some of the clean tonal modes of the early years of jazz guitar, into a fiercer, fuzzier mode – one that can be both sinister at times, and soulful at others. All tracks here are nice and long, and augmented by excellent work from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums – on the titles "V", "Gray & Visceral", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Leaving". CD also features the tracks "Jeanie" and "Air Pakistan". CD

A great little record from Bernie Senesky – a Canadian pianist who doesn't always get the recognition he deserves on this side of the border, but who can always blow us away! Bernie's got a fantastic command of the piano – this bold, wide range at times – but also with more lyrically sensitive moments too – a balance of energy that always keeps things exciting, and which comes across with a sense of warmth that's really wonderful. The trio features the mighty Gene Perla on bass and Ben Riley on drums – really matching Bernie's groove – and titles include "Bill's Waltz", "Old Folks", "Invitation", "Come To Me", "Blues For EJ", "Bud Lines", and "Young & Foolish". An overlooked gem from Lucky Thompson's mid 60s years – that wonderful time when he'd returned to the fold even stronger than ever – filled with hip new musical ideas, and a great command for the soprano sax! This set's got Lucky working on both soprano and tenor, both of which are handled with these angular, soulful tones that are totally great – right at home in a group that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums – all marvelously sensitive rhythm accompanists. Jack Melady adds harp on 2 tracks on the set – a very nice touch – and titles include "Safari", "Cry Me A River", "People", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As Time Goes By". A very strange little album – and Dick Van Dyke's only non-broadway record! The album was recorded at a time when Dick was doing a lot of stage and TV work – and the overall feeling is a bit like some of his most lively numbers on stage – swinging, jazzy, and with a fluid feel that's every bit what we like the most about early 60s pop vocals. FMP/Cien Fuegos (Austria), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Amazing work from this seminal group on the FMP scene – a quartet led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, but equally balanced between the saxes of Evan Parker, bass of Peter Kowald, and percussion of Paul Lovens! We're not sure how much to take the "nails" in the title seriously, but it does sound as if Schlippenbach is playing prepared piano at times – or perhaps his command of the keyboard is just so strong, he can make other-worldly elements come from the instrument whenever he wants! Much of the music has a full-on FMP intensity – that non-stop, sonically adventurous quality inherited from Machine Gun – spun out over three great live improvisations, titled "Range", "Black Holes", and "Three Nails Left". A wonderful live set from Joe Williams – recorded at Birdland, as you'd guess from the title – and done with a raw depth that surpasses much of his studio work from the time! Joe's really moving past cliche here – using his voice with a power that hadn't been heard since his sides for Savoy – and really commanding the audience with a charisma that shines through with incredible clarity. Harry Edison's leading a small group that also includes Jimmy Forrest on tenor and Ike Issacs on bass – and titles include "Teach Me Tonight", "Come Back Baby", "September In The Rain", "Roll Em Pete", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". An intriguing little set from drummer Tony Williams – and a set that shows him still very much in command of his talents well into the 80s! Tony's playing here with all the bold, open energy of his classic recordings – and although he picks up a bit of electric percussion at points, he still plays it all "live" – and really seems to defer to the richer acoustic sounds of the group's great lineup – an all-star setting that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Ron Carter on bass, and Mulgrew Miller on piano! The richness of the alto and trumpet are tremendous – and Hutcherson's vibes ring out beautifully, a perfect balance of tone and timing. Early work by one of the greatest voices on the alto sax in the 1950s – a player who worked with the deftness of other altoists of his generation, but a depth of soul usually reserved for the tenor! The setting is simple and perfect – as Phil Woods blows at the helm of a quartet that features John Williams on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – players who know how to get things moving, but allow plenty of room for the leader to fill space with his solos! Even at this early date, Woods' command of his instrument is amazing – and the record is easily one of the greatest introductions to his work you'll ever find. One of the most sensitively soulful records of the 70s from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – a set that still has him working in a trio format, but which also has a slightly more mellow feel overall – with some especially great work from the leader on the ballads! Yamamoto's style is maturing strongly here – and he's got this commanding spectrum of sound from the piano – gentle right hand passages and deep left hand lines – all nicely balanced with work from Tsutomo Okada on bass and Keiji Kishida on drums. Counterpoint (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Really wonderful stuff – a collection of totally unique grooves that won't cross over with any of your other African funk compilations! The focus here is on jazz, not funk or soul – and the set features a wealth of great tracks pulled from obscure South African records of the late 70s and early 80s. Funky fusion is definitely in command here – and the overall feel of the tracks is similar to some of the best European funky fusion of the 70s, fused with elements of African percussion and instrumentation – creating a true crossover of styles that crackles with a freshness that will have you coming back to this one again and again! Most tracks are instrumental – and the grooves here are a lot more complicated than on your average James Brown-inspired African funk tracks, a mix of strident modal modes, and other choppier funkier riff-heavy tunes. Plus, the whole thing's put together with the righteous intelligence of all the other Counterpoint titles – with great notes, incredible sound, and an approach that will easily take you to a whole new musical world! Titles include "I Remember You" by Mike Makahalemele, "Half N Half" by Zacks Nkosi, "Chapita" by Dick Khoza, "Lament" by Movement In The City, "Blues For Yusef" by Lionel Pillay, "The Way It Used To Be" by Pacific Express, and "La I La I La" by George Lee Larnyoh. Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
That's a sweet image on the cover – and the grooves inside are equally dynamic too – a really wonderful collection that's easily one of the most compelling in Numero's Eccentric Soul series! The work here all hails from the tiny San Antonio scene of the late 60s – but much of the music has a sound that's way different than you might expect from Texas soul – often with great harmonies that recall the best of the east coast groups of the time, and occasionally with a few brown-eyed touches that echo the style of East LA! There's a wonderfully heartbreaking feel to many of these tracks – and the set's heavy focus on mellower numbers is totally great – and gives the whole thing a wonderful late nite sort of vibe that's usually quite hard to find in compilations like this. As usual, Numero's done a great job with the notes and history of the label – but the music alone is more than enough – a heady brew of cuts that include "Little Girl Blue" and "Try Loving Me" by The Webs, "I Gotta Know" by Tonettes, "Give Your Love To Me" and "Ain't No Big Thing" by Little Jr Jesse & The Tear Drops, "Cry & Wonder Why" by Doc & Sal, "Must Be Alright" and "Hey It's Love" by The Commands, "She's Gotta Have Soul" by Bobby Blackmon & The Soul Express, and "I Can't Take No More" by Willie Cooper & The Webs. A cool little record for lovers of cats – or, more specifically, lovers of cats with a command of the French language – as all the tunes here are from French records from midcentury – a really cool blend of chanson, jazz, pop, classical, and other modes – brought together in a package that unlocks a lost legacy of feline love in the French recording industry! Some tracks are more serious – from sources by Baudelaire or Stravinsky – but most are playful, jazzy, and have the qualities you might expect from cat-like music – in a package that features one CD of songs from poetic sources, one directed at children, and one more that moves into classical and jazz. 58 tracks in all – with work by Berthe Sylva, Henri Salvador, Mister Sax, Guy Lafitte, Maurice Ravel, Magnet Quartet, Eddie Warner, Jack Irsa, Yves Montad, Les Freres Jacques, Georges Brassens, Henri Doublier, and many more.
