✨✧ BlondieEat To The Beat ... LP
Chrysalis, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Blondie had a lot to live up to after Parallel Lines, but they pulled it off here – Eat To The Beat is another classic! Downtown cool, a strong sense of pop history and tight production by Mike Chapman make for a really distinct sound on this one. Standouts include the excellent opener "Dreaming" (one of the finest Harry/Stein songs ever, if you ask us), the punky title track, "Union City Blue" and "Accidents Never Happen", and while Blondie albums are by nature hit-and-miss given the fearless mish-mash of styles they always brought in, the whole thing is pretty great! Other tracks include "Shayla", "Die Young Stay Pretty" and "Living In The Real World". LP, Vinyl record album

Gang StarrStep In The Arena ... CD
Chrysalis, 1991. New Copy ... $9.99 11.99
One of the finest early efforts from Premier and Guru – their second album – and it's not only one of Gang Starr's greatest, it's one of the greatest hip hop albums, period. Guru's mic presence is as sharply on point as ever here, and the Primo production is also at peak precision. Step Into The Area really encapsulates just about everything we love most soul beats and samples era of hip hop. Absolutely essential – and filled with killer cuts like "Step In The Arena", "Game Plan", "Just To Get A Rep", "Check The Technique", and "Who's Gonna Take The Weight". 18 tracks in all. CD

Debbie HarryKookoo ... LP
Chrysalis, 1981. Sealed ... $9.99
A nice change in sound for Debbie Harry – thanks to Chic production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards – who really help the solo singer find a groove that's quite different than her work in Blondie! The style's a mixture of the funky club that Chic did so well, with elements that lean a bit more towards an early 80s rockish dancefloor – almost with a vibe that echoes some of the UK imports trickling over to these shores at the time, but with a definite New York vibe underneath! The setting gives Harry's vocals a great way to hit a more playful nature – that sound that was creeping in a bit in Blondie, but which some folks thought was wrong for the group – and Chris Stein is still on hand to bring in some street-sensitive riffing guitar. Titles include "Backfired", "Military Rap", "Oasis", "Surrender", "Chrome", "Jump Jump", and "The Jam Was Moving". LP, Vinyl record album

Procol HarumSomething Magic (2CD edtiion – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chrysalis/Esoteric (UK), 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Relatively late work in the classic years of Procol Harum – but as any true fan of the group will tell you, these guys never stopped being great – even if the rest of the world wasn't paying as close of attention as they were back in the 60s! Gary Brooker's vocals and piano are still going strong – and the songs have that great sense of structure and subtle drama that always made the group so unique – a mode that other groups might have overdone, but which is so well balanced here, the sound is completely sublime – full-on sonic punch one minute, spare elements the next – all handled with an honest, open vibe that was pretty darn unique in the glossy music world of 1977. Titles include "Strangers In Space", "Wizard Man", "Something Magic", "Skating On Thin Ice", "The Worm & The Tree", and "The Mark Of The Claw". 2CD set features bonus tracks "Backgammon", "You'd Better Wait (live)", and "This Old Dog (live)" – plus a full bonus CD that bfeatures a BBC Radio In Concert performance from 1977 – 11 more tracks, most from earlier years! Chrysalis, 1994. Used ... $1.99
Part of a generation of US Acid Jazzers we could never really get behind at the time, this set fares a little better in retrospect. The playing has a crispness about it that we felt lacked edge back then, but betrays a debt to some of our favorite 70s jazz funk on second listen. Includes "Jazz In The Present Tense", "Keep The Rhythm Strong", "Montuno Funk", "Blood Brother", "Daddy Love", "Now This Is How We Do It", "Inside Is A Stride", "Morning After Paradise" and more. CD

✨✧ Special AKAIn The Studio ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1984. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A big big crossover album from the UK ska scene of the early 80s – built upon the ashes of the older Specials group, but still with plenty of the dark edges we'd come to expect in Jerry Dammers work! There's a bit more electric instrumentation at the bottom of the tracks, but the sound is still relatively in the ska-styled groove of the original Specials work – although sometimes maybe inflected with a more straightforward dancefloor bounce, too – which is what really helped some of these tracks get traction at a larger level beyond the ska scene. Over the years, the record's become as classic as the earlier Specials sets – and really lives up to its classic-styled cover image too! Includes the big tracks "Nelson Mandela" and "Racist Friend" – plus "Break Down The Door", "Alcohol", "War Crimes", "Bright Lights", and "Night On The Tiles". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing. Includes inner sleeve. Cover has a sticker in the top right.)

Karlheinz StockhausenCeylon/Bird Of Passage ... LP
Chrysalis, 1975. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Despite the fact that this album was released on a label that was mostly dedicated to rock, the record's still a very "out" batch of work by Stockhausen, and one that stands as one of his greatest from the mid 70s. He plays a number of odd instruments here with 2 different small ensembles, and both pieces on the record ("Ceylon" and "Bird Of Passage") are Stockhausen's attempt to recreate the feeling of traditional Singhalese music. The instrumentation is odd, and includes modulated piano, electronium, camel bells, lotus flute, and other odd instruments. The sound is spare and spooky, with a vaguely ethnographic quality. LP, Vinyl record album
(German green label pressing. Cover has light wear, a sticker spot on front, and a small sticker and some notes in pen on back.)

✨✧ Amanda LearI Am A Photograph ... LP
Chrysalis, 1977. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The standout set from Amanda Lear – a model turned singer, and one of the more striking crossover divas of the disco era! Lear's got previous ties to Salvador Dali and David Bowie, but she keeps things relatively straight ahead on this debut album – using accented vocals that recall an earlier Hildegard Knef singing in English, set to streaming Euro disco grooves that fit very well with the approach. Lear's not nearly the most soulful singer you'll ever hear, but her approach is certainly striking – especially on the album's best tracks. Titles include the classic "I Am A Photograph", plus "Alphabet", "Blood & Honey", "Tomorrow", "Pretty Boys", "Alligator", and "La Bagarre". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SpecialsSpecials (US pressing) ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1980. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most important albums on the mighty 2 Tone label – and part of a huge ska revival on the British scene that would send ripples through modern music for years to come! And sure, the words "ska" and "revival" in the same sentence can often make most folks wince – but The Specials here work at a time long before the mode was reduced to cliche – and during a punk rock period when their contributions were especially vital – presented beautifully here on an album that's also produced by a young Elvis Costello! There's no overdone jams, no schlocky frat boy modes, just hard-edged London ska with a strong nod back to Kingston roots – on titles that include "A Message To You Rudy","Do The Dog", "It's Up To You", "Doesn't Make It Alright", "Concrete Jungle", "Monkey Man", "(Dawning Of A) New Era", "Too Much Too Young", and "Gangsters". ✨✧ BlondieHunter ... LP
Chrysalis, 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A weird one from Blondie – and with lot more going for it than the reception at the time would suggest! Following up the diverse pop leanings of Autoamerican, in some ways this is the logical next step from there – Debra's voice way out front in the mix, layers of additional preclusion, horns, global pop accents (post "The Tide Is High", that's a given), oddball covers – The last Blondie album of the 80s, even though it was only 1982, and their last as a band until a late 90s reunion – and as such, ignored by some and maligned by others at the time. It's fair enough for serious fans of the first couple LPs to dismiss the pop pastiche of the last couple, but there's some really interesting stuff here – including a title them written for (and rejected by) the Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" that's radically different than the Bill Conti/Sheena Easton song, a cover the Smokey Robinson-penned "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", "Danceway", "Orchid Club", "Island Of Lost Souls", "English Boys" and more. The breakthrough album by Blondie! Parallel Lines is their third album overall, and having been released only 7 months after their second, you know they were hungry to break big – and they do it here with unbeatable cool. For as tight and bright as as the sound is, a trademark of producer Mike Chapman, there's still something of the raucous downtown energy here – and also some pretty great stylistic strides, such as the disco-aware smash "Heart Of Glass". Includes the equally classic "One Way Or Another" plus "Hanging On The Telephone", "Just Go Away", "I Know But I Don't Know" "Will Anything Happen", "Picture This", "11:59 and more. Gang Starr at pretty close to peak level here on 1994's Hard To Earn – and rather than continue to ride the waves they made on the previous couple classic albums, Guru sharpens the lyrical tone just a bit – spitting some more incisive rhymes over apporpriately gritty soul jazz beats from Primo. Tracks include the classic "DWYCK" featuring Nice & Smooth – which is just about our favorite Gang Starr track ever, to be honest – plus "Speak Ya Clout" featuring Jeru and Lil Dap, "Mass Appeal", "Code Of The Streets", "Brainstorm", "Tonz O Gunz", "Suckas Need Bodyguards", "Blowin Up The Spot", "Mostly Tha Voice", "F.A.L.A.", "Now You're Mine", "Comin For Datazz", "Aiight Chill...", "The Planet", and more. Chrysalis, 1970. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
An early gem from Jethro Tull – and a set that has the group really reaching forth with some of their more complicated, jazz-based musical impulses – while still holding onto some of the rawer power of the early days too! The album's lesser-known than some of the group's earlier hits – which may well make it even fresher all these many years later – a really stunning set of sounds that showcases the newly lyrical sensibility of Ian Anderson – both vocally and on flute – as well as the searing guitar of Martin Barre, which was really becoming a core element of the group at this point. Titles include "For Michael Collins Jefferey & Me", "Inside", "Play In Time", "Sossity You're A Woman", "With You There To Help Me", and "Nothing To Say". LP, Vinyl record album

Chrysalis, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Procol Harum check into the Grand Hotel – and check out with one of their greatest albums ever! The set's got that majestic sound that was the group's strongest point – a strange mix of the very personal vocals of Gary Brooker and the expansive blend of piano, organ, and guitar that the group often sent soaring to the skies – augmented here with some perfect use of strings and chorus – never too heavy, but all fused perfectly with the core energy of the sextet! In fact, it's that sense of compression – of folding everything together so well – that really makes the group so great, and such an important precursor for so many acts that were beginning to blossom in the UK scene, using a similar approach in different ways. Yet it's that Gary Brooker/Keith Reid sense of songwriting that still sets these guys apart from anyone else – as you'll hear on titles that include "Grand Hotel", "Tojours L'Amour", "TV Caesar", "A Souvenir Of London", "Robert's Box", "Fires", "For Liquorice John", and "A Rum Tale".
