Features a sweet trio with Gene Krupa on drums and CharlieVentura on tenor – with only piano, and no other instrumentation! The Stuff Smith group features Billy Taylor on piano. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some fading along the spine, light wear.)
A perfect example of why the CharlieVentura group was one of the most popular live acts on the west coast scene of it's day! Producer Gene Norman really manages to capture the charm of the group in all its glory – recorded live in a lineup that features Conte Candoli on trumpet, Bennie Green on trombone, and Boots Mussulli on alto – plus some great scatted vocals from the team of Jackie & Roy! The recording's got a natural, flowing quality that really gets at the liveness of the set – and the horns come together beautifully throughout – in that wonderful mix of bop and swing that was the Ventura trademark! Titles include "Boptura", "Flamingo", "Birdland", "Dark Eyes", "High On An Open Mike", and "Lullaby In Rhythm". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s issue – GNPS-1 – still sealed in clean shrink.)
Wonderful work from CharlieVentura – just the kind of record to make you appreciate what an amazing player he was back in the day! The session's a nice spare one, without some of the pyrotechnics or showmanship of other Ventura albums – especially the live dates – and the intimacy really lets Charlie open up in a personal, creative sort of way on his tenor – almost rivaling Lester Young or Ben Webster for tone and imagination. Great Verve-like work throughout – with rhythm by Gene Kutch, Louis Cicchini, and Ace Tesone – and tracks that include "Blues For Two", "Somebody Loves Me", "Limehouse Blues", "Blue Prelude", and "Girl Of My Dreams". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original yellow label pressing with trumpeter logo and deep groove – a nice copy!)

Dizzy Gillespie —
New Wave ... LP Philips, 1962. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and CharlieVentura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". LP, Vinyl record album
Movie Themes For Lovers Only is a great one – a set that takes some of the best film themes of the early 60s, and turns them into great vehicles for that mellow Gleason sound – that warm mix of orchestrations and some very light jazz touches – heard here on solos from CharlieVentura on trumpet and Pee Wee Erwin on tenor. That Gleason touch is impeccable, as always – and titles include "My Romance", "La Dolce Vita", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "The Man That Got Away", and "Lawrence Of Arabia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing, still sealed. Shrink has light wear.)

Jackie Gleason —
Riff Jazz ... LP Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
We're not exactly sure what "riff jazz" is, but we can definitely say that the album's one of Jackie Gleason's jazziest from the 50s – a really hard-hitting affair that gets past the sleepier arrangements of other records, and makes great use of breakout solo work from Jimmy Cleveland, CharlieVentura, Hank Jones, and Charlie Shavers! The players stick with a slightly traditional mode, as you might expect – but the album's got a great way of mixing the fullness of other Gleason albums with a more searing approach to the solos. There's a heck of a lot of titles on the record – and tunes include "Tollgate Treat", "Sawmill Slide", "Hawthorne Circle Hop", "Route 9A", "Mary's Pizza Mart", "Croton Craze", "Cortlandt Clipper", and "Bird N Bottle" – all originals co-penned by Gleason! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing. Cover has surface wear and aging.)
Sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with CharlieVentura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese Trio pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)
Heavy swinging material from Krupa – working here in a loud and frenetic trio format, with Teddy Napoleon on piano and CharlieVentura on tenor. Gene's working all the bass himself on the drums, and the album's got that pyrotechnic feel of the best JATP sets. Titles include "Dark Eyes", "Idaho", "Body & Soul", and "The Man I Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with trumpeter logo & deep groove. Cover has light edge wear, aging.)
Killer work from Krupa's trio that features CharlieVentura on tenor and Teddy Napoleon on piano – a really wide-open combo with a surprisingly inventive sound! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Clef pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has light wear in one corner, and a bump in another – but overall this is a great copy.)
A great 70s album, one that collects material from three historic Jazz At The Philharmonic Concerts in 1946 – with crucial solo work from the young Charlie Parker, as well as Lester Young – and other material from Dizzie Gillespie and Buck Clayton on trumpets, and Coleman Hawkins on tenor! Also features work from Willie Smith on alto, CharlieVentura on tenor, Mel Powell and Arnold Ross on piano, and Irving Ashby on guitar. LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has ring & edge wear, a promo stamp, and some aging.)
