✨✧ VariousCha Cha Au Harem – Orientica France 1960 to 1964 ... CD
Born Bad (France), Early 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A strange mix of Latin rhythms and exotica modes – served up here on a set of recordings from early 60s France that we might not have heard otherwise! Grooves are often in the cha cha mode promised in the title, but other instrumentation is definitely "au harem" – exotic woodwind passages, Mid East percussion, vocal bits, and more – almost as if the modes of Les Baxter and Martin Denny had been moved to the ancient world of Asia Minor! The approach is great – often very much in the late 50s styles used by Capitol and Liberty Records in the US – and titles include "Ismaila" by Benny Benett, "Inch Allah" by Fred Adison, "Danse Du Sud" by Zina Nahid, "Mahomet De Tunis" by Ali Baba Et Son Ensemble, "Oriental Express" by Roger Morris, "El Mechoi" by Los Cangaceiros, "Danse L'Amour" by Staiffi Et Ses Mustafas, and "On M'Appelle L'Oriental" by Trio Joroca. ✨✧ Tony Bennett/Bill EvansComplete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings (Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album/Together Again – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Fantasy, 1975/1976. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete recording of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans as a duo – the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album from '75 and the '76 follow up Together Again – back to back, plus a bonus CD of alternate takes! If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album is the one to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. Titles include "When In Rome", "Some Other Time", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", and "Young & Foolish". Together Again is another gem, following the form of the first duos record exceptionally well, perhaps with Evan's piano a bit more prominent in the sound, and another fine batch of tunes, including "The Bad And The Beautiful", "Lucky To Be Me", "A Child Is Born", "Lonely Girl", "You Must Believe In Spring" and more. The bonus CD features alternate takes of material from the 2 albums, with versions of "You And Foolish", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "Some Other Time", "When In Rome", "Waltz For Debbie" and multiple versions of "The Bad And The Beautiful", "A Child Is Born", and more. ✨✧ Jimi HendrixBlues ... CD
Sony/MCA, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The brilliant bluesy side of Hendrix – great stuff recorded from '66-'70 – including his most blues based originals and incredible covers! Bluesy it is, but it's also Jimi – with the soaring, loose and massively influential lead guitar grooves and many of which went unreleased until the 90s – and remains among the most essential of posthumous Hendrix releases. Includes "Hear My Train A Comin'" (acoustic and electric versions), "Born Under A Bad Sign", "Catfish Blues", "Red House", "Voodoo Chile Blues", "Mannish Boy", "Once I Had A Woman", "Jam 292" and "Electric Church Red House". ✨✧ JBs ReunionBring The Funk On Down ... CD
Instinct/P-Vine, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Although we always wince at the idea of a JBs reunion album (and there have been a bit too many in the past 10 years), this one isn't as bad as you might think. Fred Wesley is handling production, and the group includes Jabo Starks, St Clair Pickney, Bobby Byrd, Clyde Stubblefield, and Wesley himself. The overall sound is more Horny Horns than JBs – and with vocals on many cuts, the record feels a bit like Wesley's House Party album from 1980. In fact, the main problem is really the vocals – as the group really needs someone like James Brown to sing lead on most tracks! Tracks include "Soul Men", "Tag Along", "Born To Groove", "Do The Doo", "What About The Music", "Carry On", and "Dynaflo". CD

✨✧ Lyrics BornLater That Day ... CD
Quannum, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lyrics Born of Latyrx fame drops a burning full length solo joint! This is pretty much entirely produced, arranged, programmed and written by LB, so if you know the style, you know you can expect a lot of funky live instrumentation, syrupy summer nightlife drums topped off with sexy soulful female hooks. LB sees himself as somewhat of a philosophical Barry White tongue-in-check hip hopper, so his rhymes bounce playfully over his west coast funk, sometimes hilarious, somewhat bragging, definitely harmonious. Check the smooth reggae duet "Love Me So Bad" with Joyo Velarde, the lowrider bass in "Bad Dreams", or the righteousness of "Last Trumpet". There's other guest spots by Cut Chemist, Gift Of Gab, Lateef and the Whitefield Brothers. Plus "Rise And Shine", "Stop Complaining", "Pack Up", "U Ass Bank", "One Session" and more! CD

✨✧ Lyrics BornSame !@#$ Different Day (CD & DVD) ... CD
Quannum, 2005. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly strong remix album (and more) for Lyrics Born, but really the only thing we should be surprised by is the fact that we were surprised, 'cause LB hasn't let us down yet! The roster of remixers and contributors is impressive – including Jumbo (Lifesavas), Evidence (Dilated Peoples), Morcheeba, Lateef The Truth Speaker, DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel, E-40, Casual, Poets Of Rhythm, DJ Spinna and others. Nice! Tracks include "Hello (Jumbo rmx)", "Pack Up" feat Evidence & KRS-One, "The Last Trumpet (Halou rmx)" feat Leteef & DJ Shadow, "Over You" feat Joyo Velarde and production by Shadow, "Callin' Out (rmx)" feat E-40 & Casual, "I Changed My Mind (DJ Spinna rmx)" and more! Bonus DVD includes videos for "The Last Trumpet", "I Changed My Mind", "Bad Dreams", "Callin' Out", "Pack It Up" and more! CD

✨✧ VariousCan't You Hear Me – African Nuggets ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The "nuggets" in the title is very well placed here – as all the cuts here have every bit as much freak and fuzz as the American garage and pre-punk work chronicled famously on the lengendary Nuggets series! Yet these tracks are all even more obscure, and all come from African sources that never got any exposure over here back in the day – records from Zambia, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe – all brought together in a massive collection that's filled with heavy guitar work, and a fair bit of monstrous basslines too – which gives some of these tracks a slightly funky current at the bottom, even while the guitars and vocals are tripping out up top! The collection's a great complement to some of the Zamrock reissues from Now Again in recent years – and titles include "The Bad Will Die" by Keith Mlevhu, "Can't You Hear Me" by Paul Ngozi, "Black Power" by Peace, "Mad Man" by Born Free, "Breakthrough" by Funkees, "Few Bena Zambia" by Revolutions, "Come Home" by Wells Fargo, "Amanaz" by Amanaz, "Don't Take Me For A Ride" by Founders, "Like A Chicken" by Witch, and "Making Life Out Of Music" by Eye Q. Also includes the reworked "No Time (Pilooski edit)" by Witch. CD

✨✧ VariousFat Possum Records – Not The Same Old Blues Crap Vol 3 ... CD
Fat Possum, Early 2000s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The third in Fat Possum's Not The Same Old Blues Crap series – and a pretty substantial creative left turn in some ways, though still focused on raw, hardscrabble blues! Fat Possum figureheads RL Burnside and T-Model Ford are in the mix, as you'd hope, along with Charles Caldwell, Little Freddie King and other blues heavies, but it's also got some reverent cuts by (then) upstarts The Black Keys, the Iggy & The Stooges and even Lyrics Born – showing the range of influence the one time unknown blues figures Fat Possum championed at the time had on various cats. Includes "Hadn't I Been Good To You" by Charles Caldwell, "Set You Free" by the pre-superstar Black Keys, "I Found Out" by Nathaniel Mayer, Juinior Kimbrough's "You Better Run" as covered by Iggy & The Stooges, "Crack Head Joe" by Little Freddie King, "Goin' Down South" by RL Burnside feat Lyrics Born, "Cocaine Bill" by Kenny Brown, "Pushin' My Luck" by Robert Belfour, "Goodbye Slim Harpo" by Robert Pete Williams and "Bad Man" by T-Model Ford. ✨✧ Doug CarnFree For All ... CD
Doodlin, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from jazz organ genius Doug Carn – a player who's been off most folks' radar for a few decades, but has continued to make some really wonderful music of his own! This set's got Doug in tighter, sharper formation than on his 70s classics for the Black Jazz label – working with a quartet that features really searing work on tenor from Howard Riley and Teodross Avery – paired up and soaring to the skies with the bold, modal lines that flow from Carn's fingers with effortless ease! There's no bass at all on the record – Doug handles all of that with the foot pedals – and drummer Deszon Claiborne really gets the groove right, with a mix of complexity and swing that really echoes Doug's best impulses on the Hammond. Titles include "Bad Attitude", "Search For Peace", "Beyond All Limits", "Free For All", "Spiritual Sunrise Spiritual Sunset", and a great version of "Little B's Poem" – different than the style Doug used on the tune in the 70s. ✨✧ Marvin GayeSuper Hits ... CD
Tamla/Motown, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kind of an ultimate Marvin Gaye hits compilation – issued in 1970, with one of the most badass Motown covers of the time! The album's got a famous image of Gaye as a black Superman – flying high on the cover of a set that's filled with some of his best 60s work for Motown – and for some reason, there seems to be a few more cuts in the package than you might get in the usual hits collection of the time. Every title's a classic – and tunes include "Pride & Joy", "That's The Way Love Is", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", and "Hitch Hike". CD

✨✧ Phineas NewbornHere Is Phineas ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic early work by Phineas Newborn – and a record cut right after his emergence from the great Memphis scene of the 1950s! Most of the album features trio material – cut with Kenny Clarke on drums and Oscar Pettiford on bass – but a few tracks also feature some very nice guitar work by Newborn's lesser-known brother, Calvin – who helps give the record some slight bluesy undercurrents you won't hear on other albums from Phineas at the time. The style is a mix of bop soloing and that lyrical approach to the keyboard that Newborn was forging along with a few other popular pianists of his generation – and titles include "Dahoud", "Celia", "Barbados", and "Newport Blues".
