✨✧ Bob DylanFallen Angels ... CD
Columbia, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bob Dylan and his incomparable band take on old school pop standards for the second album in a row – and it's a real charmer! Fallen Angels has a lot in common with the preceding Strangers In The Night, as they're again taking on songs recorded by, and in some cases popularized by Sinatra, but this one goes a bit deeper into the classic American songbook – and it's all the better for it. Dylan's reputation as a songwriter is borderline biblical, while his reputation as a conventionally gifted singer is, well...something else – so there's a sly allurement here that's not lost on the headliner. He's paying earnest tribute to the songs themselves – which in the course of pop history have been overshadowed by the voices singing them – and on that front, it's masterful! Still, Dylan's raspy croon is pretty darn charismatic itself on this material, making it another late career gem. Longtime Dylan players Charlie Sexton, Stu Kimball, Tony Garnier, George Recile and Donnie Herron make the instrumental magic happen, along with newer Dylan player (though longtime session guitar ace) Dean Parks – but extra credit to Herron, whose steel guitar sound makes it extra special. Includes "Young At Heart", "Maybe You'll Be There", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "All The Way", "Skylark", "Nevertheless", "All Or Nothing At All", "It Had To Be You", "Melancholy Mood", "That Old Black Magic" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine". CD

Grand FunkWhat's Funk? ... LP
Warner, 1983. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A record that asks a musical question with the title – although one that provides an answer that's different than you might expect if you're a fan of soul music! Still, if you've been a lover of Grand Funk right from the start, you'll find plenty to please your ears here – a slight 80s twist in the production and instrumentation – less organ and more keyboards, but still plenty of guitars – and the usual top-shelf vocal presentation from Mark Farner at the head of the group. Titles include "Borderline", "El Salvador", "Don't Lie To Me", "Life In Outer Space", "Innocent", and "Still Waitin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a promo stamp.)

✨✧ Little FeatLast Record Album ... LP
Warner, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Of course, this is not the last record album – it's not even the last album by Little Feat – but it's a damn good one! The Last Record Album isn't restless as the previous few albums, with kind of a laidback groove, overall – and we actually really dig Little Feat in a mellow mood! Includes "Romance Dance", "Long Distance Love", "Down Below The Borderline", "Mercenary Territory", "Don't Bogart That Joint", Somebody's Leavin" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MC5Kick Out the Jams ... CD
Elektra, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Forget The Stooges, forget Alice Cooper, forget the White Stripes, and maybe even forget Funkadelic – because this landmark album is one that really put the ferocity of the Detroit scene on the map – rising up the city's legacy of raw sounds next to their better-known soul and pop of the 60s – and forever putting MC5 on the great rock and roll map! The group had been honing their craft in the city for a few years before this set – and it was the genius of Elektra Records to capture them live at the city's Grande Ballroom, and not in the studio – which is part of the intensity of the record's charm, especially on the sometimes-edited bit of profanity. Titles include the seminal "Kick Out The Jams", plus "Come Together", "Rocket Reducer No 62", "Borderline", "Motor City Is Burning", "I Want You Right Now", and "Starship". CD

✨✧ MetallicaMaster Of Puppets (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Blackened, 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An unimpeachable metal masterpiece! Master Of Puppets is one of the rare cases when the critical and popular consensuses match right up and are both right on the money – there's just no arguing against this being considered one of the greatest, most influential, and surprisingly timeless metal albums of all time – and it built that reputation organically, fan by fan, without radio or music videos to hype it. All the more impressive for the few disarmingly quiet moments and borderline pretty instrumental passages before the heaviness comes walloping back in, this one is for the ages. All classic songs on this one: "Battery", "Master Of Puppets", "The Thing That Should Not Be", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Disposable Heroes", "Leper Messiah", "Orion" and "Damage, Inc.". Horace ParlanSpeakin' My Piece ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
A killer set by one of the greatest pianists of the postwar era – and one that features Horace Parlan's piano trading lines with the legendary Turrentine brothers (both Stanley & Tommy), playing here at the height of their powers! Tommy Turrentine's trumpet is especially great here – spurring on Stanley's tenor into a groove that's a lot deeper, and more soulful than usual – a perfect sound in the frontline, kicked up nicely by Horace Parlan's piano! Rhythm is from the team of George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums – very tight and crackling throughout – and the album's easily one of the most cooking Blue Notes from the time. Titles include "Wadin", "Oh So Blue", "Speakin My Piece", "Up In Cynthia's Room", "Rastus", and "Borderline". CD

✨✧ Soil & Pimp SessionsPimp Master EP ... 12-inch
Brownswood (UK), 2005. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
4 incredible tracks from the instant classic CD by Soil & Pimp Sessions – including the 2 bonus tracks from Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label version! "Fuller Love" floors us in the same way as the harder hitting material from the full length – with wild riffing that manages be completely riveting, and borderline ferocious – while retaining a titanic groove! Next up is their take on the Burt Bacharach-Hal David nugget "Wives And Lovers" – marrying the indelible groovy melody of the original to the pummeling Soil & Pimp sound! We hate to admit it, but if you've already purchased an earlier version of the album – you need these tracks! "Waltz For Goddess" and "Wheel Within A Wheel" round out the EP. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Thin LizzyJohnny The Fox ... CD
Mercury/Vertigo, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ok, so can we admit that we love this one for just what it is? Thin Lizzy's always been tops in our book – and at this point, they're at their best, and sound like everything that AM rock dreams are made of, albeit with a heavier crunch. However, in order to regain our credibility, we'll also point out that the album also contains the monster old school break "Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed" – with lots of tasty drums on the intro! Also includes "Johnny", "Rocky", "Borderline", "Don't Believe A Word", "Fool's Gold", "Old Flame", "Massacre", "Sweet Marie", and "Boogie Woogie Dance". CD
