✨✧ Keith Mansfield/Alan HawkshawKPM 1000 – The Big Beat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest sound library records ever made – a whopping batch of funky Hammond heavies from British legends Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw! The rare set was recorded right at the tail end of the 60s – and it's got a mod sort of style that mixes funky rhythms with some incredibly groovy work on organ – all in service of tight, short tunes originally recorded for use in radio and TV, but which is easily some of the best instrumental work coming out of the UK at the time! Both players are at the top of their game here – Hawkshaw, with plenty of those whomping grooves we love so much in his work with The Mohaws – and Mansfield, with a clean lean line on the keys that's equally great. Titles include "Exclusive Blend", "Teenage Travelogue", "Teenage Ton Up", "The Mexican DJ", and "Red Square Stomp" by Keith Mansfield – and "Studio 69", "Work Out", "Beat Me Til I'm Blue", "Senior Thump", "Tap Footer", "Delivery Date", "Man On The Move", and "Debsville" by Alan Hawkshaw. ✨✧ Alan MoorhouseKPM 1000 – Big Beat Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The big beat here is plenty darn funky – but in some really weird and wonderful ways too – thanks to the genius talents of the mighty Alan Moorehouse, the legendary British maestro featured on this rare sound library album for KPM! Moorehouse is even more compelling than some of his funky contemporaries on the sound library scene – because he's not only got a great way of cooking up a short, simple, soulful groove – but he also puts the instruments together in really unusual ways, often to create sounds that veer past their simple origins, to make the grooves sound even greater! This album's a sound library masterpiece all the way through – the kind of set that makes you realize why this under-exposed genre of music is regarded so highly by modern beatheads – thanks to Moorehouse's use of organ, keyboards, funky drums, and a fair bit of acoustic guitar – quite unusual for a KPM set, but all the more compelling. Titles inlcude "Boss Man", "Soul Skimmer", "Pop Pastime", "That's Nice", "West Coastin", "Angelic Gas", "Expo In Tokyo", "Rock It Again", "Rockin Boogie", and "Pop Mandolin". LP, Vinyl record album

CrampsDate With Elvis ... LP
Big Beat (UK), 1986. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the best full lengths by The Cramps! By the time A Date With Elvis came out in the mid 80s, The Cramps had pretty much perfected their wild mix of ghoulish innuendo and truly devoted roots rock/garage revivalism. The sex club and monster movie imagery was for show, but their love of rootsy rumbles was no joke! The record is dedicated to the memory of Ricky Nelson and the dedication is not ironic. Great, ghoulish Cramps at their mid-decade peak. Oh, and by the way. . .Elvis couldn't have handled a date with Ivy. She'd have wrecked that boy. Includes "How Far Can I Go?", "The Hot Pearl Snatch", "People Ain't No Good", "What's Inside A Girl?", "Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?", "Kizmiaz", "Aloha From Hell", "Cornfed Dames" and more. Francesco De MasiLa Macchina Della Violenza (aka The Big Game) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat/Spettro (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
An excellent 70s Italian film score – penned for a political thriller, but handled with a fair bit of sweet and lovely themes! The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". Naz Nomad & The Nightmares (The Damned)Give Daddy The Knife Cindy ... LP
Big Beat/Ace (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Looks like a 60s soundtrack, but the set's actually an unusual psychedelic project by The Damned – released as if the whole thing was a record designed to accompany one of those schlocky AIP exploitation films from years back – but actually better than most of those albums from a musical perspective! Given that the whole thing was recorded in 1983, it's actually surprisingly powerful stuff – and seems to preface the big wave of UK sounds from the Creation Records scene – a surprising move for The Damned, but one that comes off surprisingly well. Singer Naz Nomad is actually Dave Vanian – and tracks include covers of songs that the group loved, plus originals of their own. Titles include "Action Woman", "The Wind Blows Your Hair", "Kicks", "Cold Turkey", "She Lied", "I Can't Stand This Love Goodbye","The Trip", and "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night". Blazing 60s & 70s string-shredding mastery from Japan's great guitar instrumentals guru Takeshi Terauchi – whose playing matches the greatest 50s & 60s rock guitar gurus in both dexterous ability and pulpy mood setting! Takeshi put his own unique spin on the chugging styles of the period – hard-charging twang, surf and beat in the 60s, and distorted spacey and funky rock later on in the 70s – all of it pretty amazing! Roy AyersCoffy – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Polydor/Universal, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
What can we say? This is one of the greatest soul soundtracks ever! In a market that was dominated by the big-selling Shaft and Superfly albums, Roy slipped in this masterful blend of jazzy vibes and wah wah funk that's easily one of the best-composed records of the blacksploitation genre! The album's much more unified than your average funky soundtrack – and each track moves between styles that you'd hear on any of Roy's great albums from the time. There's heavy funk on the track "Brawling Broads", cool vibes and electric piano on "Aragon", off-beat jazz on "Coffy Sauna", and great soul on cuts like "Coffy Is The Color" and "Coffy Baby". The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest rock records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyJust Coolin' ... LP
Blue Note, 1959. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
The long-overdue release of an unissued Blue Note session from 1959 – one that features a version of the Jazz Messengers right before Wayne Shorter joined the group, with the mighty Hank Mobley on the quintet lineup on tenor! The Messengers in 1959 and 1960 were really at the top of their game – and here feature the fantastic newcomers, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, both of whom were helping drummer Blakey to form a new, evolved version of the sound he'd been crafting with other lineups in previous years – aided here by the rock-solid Jymie Merritt on bass! As with some of the other unissued Blue Note dates of this type, the whole thing is fantastic – not an unformed, half-baked session – but the kind of material that could stand right next to Blakey classics of the time, like The Big Beat or Moanin. Titles include "Quick Trick", "M&M", "Just Coolin", "Jimerick", "Close Your Eyes", and "Hipsippy Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A sexy little film, with a sexy little soundtrack to match – just the right blend of funk and crime modes you'd expect for a movie that was a precursor to Charlie's Angels! The Doll Squad were a lot trashier, though – and it really shows in some of the music here, which has a great early 70s exploitation vibe at times, and some surprisingly nice jazz currents at others – much more in the vein of some hip Italian work of the period, especially with the instrumentation. Most numbers are quite short, but the set features lots of these cool cuts coming together nicely, with a bit of dialog too – and the set includes the vocal number "Song For Sabrina" – plus "Jealous Lady", "Doll Squad Theme", "Big Boom", "Double Trouble", "The Big Switch", and "Freedom Beat". Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisL'Ultimo Squalo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $29.99
A nice little shark-themed soundtrack, but one that comes across with a vibe that's quite different than any of the music used for Jaws – partly because there's a number of vocal tunes in the mix! The set features three standout songs – "Hollywood Big Time" and "You've Changed The World For Me", sung by Yvonne Wilkins – and "Ballad", which is sung by composer Maurizio De Angelis himself – which are then mixed with instrumental numbers that are electric and keyboard-heavy, maybe more in line with Italian slasher/horror work of the period than you might expect! The colder electronics must have given the watery scenes a really great vibe on the screen – and the package features great sound throughout, and a mighty nice graphic appeal. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Deee-LiteWorld Clique ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's never been a better bit of pop throwaway dancefloor fodder ever! Sure, these guys were blaring out of every cheap radio at the time, and it was just about impossible to walk into a shopping mall without hearing "Groove Is In The Heart" for about 5 years after the album came out – but to us, that was a great thing, and the record represents one of the high points in pop music of the past few decades. Thanks to some skillful sampling by Towa Tei, the group were grounded in a rich history of funk, house, disco, soul, and Brazilian influences – all of which they managed to blend with a postmodern perfection that other groups could only ever dream of! The big hits are certainly very familiar, but the whole album's a delight – and tracks include "Who Was That?", "Smile On", "Try Me On . . . I'm Very You", "World Clique", "ESP", and "Good Beat". Butch Engle & The StyxNo Matter What You Say – The Best Of Butch Engle & The Styx ... LP
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Surprisingly strong work from a Bay Area group who never managed to crack the big time back in the day – then hung up their guitars at a time when most of their contemporaries were really starting to blossom! Maybe the issue was that Butch Engel & The Styx had experience going back to the start of the 60s – moving through familiar guitar-based modes for the first part of the decade, before really hitting their stride with the wonderful sounds on this record – done partly in collaboration with Beau Brummel Ron Elliott, who helped produced and lent them some songs – but also with this increasingly heartfelt, freewheeling quality that could have put them at the height of the SF scene, had they kept going. The set features rare singles issued on the Golden State, Loma, MEA, and Onyx labels – plus some excellent unreleased tracks too – titles that include "I Call Her Name", "Left Hand Girl", "Hey I'm Lost", "Going Home", "I Like Her", "Puppetmaster", "If You Believe", "Tell Me Please", and "She Is Love". His orchestra includes such folks as Pete Condoli on trumpet, Dick Nash on trombone, Johnny Williams on piano, Victor Feldman on vibes & marimba and Larry Bunker on vibes. Tico/Survival Research (Australia), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Essential grooves from Tito Puente – a really unique record for the time, and a set that's only grown in power over the years! The album's an all-percussion jam from Puente – one that strips away most other instrumentation, to focus just on heavy drum work from Puente and a core group of players that includes Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Patato Valdes! There's only just a bit of bass – played by Robert Rodriguez – to focus the energy of the percussion, and the timbales, congas, and bongos offer up both melodic lines and rhythmic grooves – a groundbreaking sound, recorded brilliantly back in the 50s! The album's got a killer stripped-down feel that you rarely get on other Tito Puente records – and tracks include "Tito on Timbales", "Swinging Mambo", "Congo Beat", "Sticks On Bongo", "Tito & Mongo On Timbales", "Four Beat Mambo", and "The Big Four". George RussellNew York, New York (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Decca, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... On January 29, 2021
A wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 39.98
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! Titles include "Yatra-Ta" by Terje Terasmaa, "African Mailman" by Rhythmagic Orchestra, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode, "Foot In The Door" by Onward International, "Zombie" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Emnete (live)" by Imperial Tiger Orchestra, "4 Beat Cha Cha Cha" by Lucas Van Merwijk & His Cubop City Big Band, "Tribute To Mulatu" by Patchworks, "Koumba Fri Fri" by Mamelon, "Sorrow Tears & Blood" by Shola Adisa Farrar & Florian Pellissier Quartet, and "Mambo De La Pinta" by Art Pepper. ✨✧ Act One (Act 1)Act One ... LP
Spring, 1974. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! Titles include "Goodbye Love", "Friends Or Lovers", "Tom the Peeper", "Party Hardy People", "I Don't Want To Know What You Do To Me", "Still Waters", "It's The Same Old Story", and "Love's Got Your Mind". ✨✧ Apple & The Three OrangesFree & Easy – The Complete Works 1970 to 1975 (with download) ... LP
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 19.99
A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. Titles include "Free & Easy (parts 1 & 2)", "Moon Light", "Curse Upon The World", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Down Home Publicity", "True Love Will Never Die", "Gotta Stand For Something (parts 1 & 2)", and "I'll Give You A Ring". Capitol, 1984. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Darn solid work from Ashford & Simpson – one of the duo's biggest albums for Capitol Records, and a great set from their 80s run for the label! The groove here is a bit more heavy on keyboards and beats than before, but the pair still keep things plenty soulful with their positive, upbeat approach to the music – rich, full, and always steeped in soul! The title track, "Solid", is one of the most-remembered tunes from the duo – and other cuts include "Outta The World", "The Jungle", "Honey I Love You", "Babies", "Cherish Forever More", and "Tonight We Escape". A wonderfully trippy record from The Beatles – filled with songs that have become classics, even though the initial package was designed for a movie that was one heck of a mess! The set's incredibly strong throughout – filled with some of the new post-Peppers ideas explored by the group, yet also with some catchier numbers too – great sing-songy tracks that undoubtedly were a big mainstream influence to the world of late 60s psych! Titles include "Blue Jay Way", "The Fool On The Hill", "Flying", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", and "Baby You're A Rich Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1982. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Louie Bellson recorded in London – heading up a big band that features Frank Strazzeri on piano, Geurge Duvivier on bass, and a heck of a lot of horn players in the mix! The group's got a bold, upbeat sort of feel – similar to some of the later Buddy Rich groups of the 70s – and given Rich's popularity in the UK, one might almost think that Bellson's going for a similar vibe here! Tracks are long, with just the right amount of complicated overtones to keep things interesting – and titles include "Blues For Freddy", "Sing A Song Of Love", "Santos", "Put It Right There", "Jus Fer Us", and "Drum Squad". ✨✧ Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... LP
Rozenblit/Audio Clarity (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Very groovy work from these two Brit sound library greats – loads of funky tunes, and great keyboards too – all served up in a massively funky record that was never issued to the public at large! Had this set hit the real record racks in 1974, it might well have challenged some of the greatest material from George Duke or Herbie Hancock – as the tunes are mostly funky, and feature lots of wonderful work on a wide variety of keyboards – sometimes getting all cool and wigged-out, even when the grooves are upbeat – a bit like Herbie in his Sextant years! The breakthrough album by Blondie! Parallel Lines is their third album overall, and having been released only 7 months after their second, you know they were hungry to break big – and they do it here with unbeatable cool. For as tight and bright as as the sound is, a trademark of producer Mike Chapman, there's still something of the raucous downtown energy here – and also some pretty great stylistic strides, such as the disco-aware smash "Heart Of Glass". Includes the equally classic "One Way Or Another" plus "Hanging On The Telephone", "Just Go Away", "I Know But I Don't Know" "Will Anything Happen", "Picture This", "11:59 and more. B-Boy/Traffic, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

Easily one of the funkiest albums that James Brown ever recorded – and one of his few entries into the blacksploitation genre of the 70s! James really outdid himself for this one – working at a hard burning pace that had the JBs cooking up some killer funk for just about every number in the set – and which also has James himself stepping out vocally for a few key tracks. The album features the massive groover "People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" – a slamming track that beats nearly every number in the JB 70s catalog – plus other cuts that include "To My Brother", "Brother Rapp", "Sexy Sexy Sexy", "Slaughter Theme", "Transmogrification", "King Slaughter", and "How Long Can I Keep It Up". Wild stuff! White singer Wayne Cochran looks like he should be a rockabilly star – right down to his big ol' pompadour haircut – but this early album of his for Chess is actually a tight batch of groovers that holds a nice appeal to fans of late 60s funk! Cochran's got a raw Wilson Pickett-ish sound to his voice, and the CC Riders vamp behind him in a nice tight way that's similar to a lot of the mixed race groups backing up other southern soul stars from the time. Includes the breakbeat version of "Little Bitty Pretty One", plus "Big City Woman", "Get Down With It", "Boom Boom", and "Get Ready". ✨✧ Gary Davis/Chocolate StarChocolate Star – A Taste Of Chocolate – The Very Best Of Gary Davis ... LP
Traffic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Chocolate Star – less a group than a record label or project name used for some excellent underground club recordings from the late 70s and early 80s! Gary Davis is the real brainchild here – keyboardist, songwriter, and main spiritual force behind the music – but Peter Brown also played a big hand in some of the initial Chocolate Star sessions too, and there's a definite P&P groove to most of this work! The Chocolate Star touch is perhaps best known on the classic club track "Got To Get Your Love" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction – but it's even better on the more obscure work throughout the entire package – an array of tunes that run from funky club to other modes that include mellow soul, old school hip hop, and even some very spare tracks that mostly just have keyboards and beats! Titles include "Gee Dee", "Last Night", "Stay With Me", "Time For Love Is Now", "Super Jake", "Got To Get Your Love", "The Professor Here", "The Pop", "Gotta Get Your Love (Kenny Dope rmx)", "The Pop (12")", "The Professor Is Space Walking", and "Gee Dee (alt mix)". One of the few albums ever cut by Les DeMerle, one of the hippest drummers of his time – made legendary thanks to legions of samplers and beatheads in the 90s! The album is one of Les' best records – a tight batch of funky big band tracks, with lots of nice grooves, and a very hip lineup that includes Frank Foster, Joe Beck, Chris Woods, Arnie Lawrence, and Charles Sullivan – all coming together in some great tunes that have very unusual rhythms, and a great format that puts the drums in line with the hip playing in the reed section! Peak period DMX – coming pretty quickly on the heels of the breakout It's Dark And Hell Is Hot – and a prime set of rough, raw Ruff Ryder hip hop circa '98! DMX's rhymes are nearly as brutal as that bloody cover photo, but he has such a knack for delivering even the most hardcore rhymes in the form of shout along anthems, he managed to take 'em to the top of the charts. Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". While the movie was filled with over-the-top characterizations that completely went against the brilliance of the original strip, Elfman's score is a brooding masterpiece of understatement – rejecting all the cartoony elements of the film, and instead furthering Elfman's growing talent for orchestral scoring. Their style of heavy east coast funky soul beatcraft and slow rolling rhymes was seriously distinctive at the time – sticking to what they do best – and better than most of their peers – on both the production ti[ and in the back and forth rhymes was the way to go, completing a pair of back-to-back classics. Foreign Exchange, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Don GereWerewolves On Wheels ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $22.99
A biker soundtrack to end all biker soundtracks – one that shares plenty of elements with better-known entries in the genre, but which also has some really wild and offbeat moments! As with most of the short-lived motorcycle soundtrack era, the vibe here is much more rock than other film scores of the time – written and performed by Don Gere, with a variety of styles that echo some of the fake groups that were often thrown together for bigger biker films – but sometimes with looser, weirder elements that really deliver the kind of sounds that we always expected on other biker soundtracks, but which were instead buried under piles of b and c-grade psych. Instead, Don really serves up the goods here – especially on some of the more fuzzy Satanic ritual tracks, which also have some great sound effects – and which then have you embracing some of the straighter rock tracks, almost as a relief. Titles include "Werewolves On Wheels (Main Theme)", "Mount Shasta Home", "Ritual", "Ritual 2", "The Devil's Advocates", "One Foot In Heaven", "Burning Grass", "Tarot", "Tarot Trail", "Dust Bowl", "Ritual 3", and "Werewolves On Wheels (End Theme)". Heavenly soul from the start of the 80s – a sweet little indie set that's done as a tribute to Minnie Riperton and Kenneth Armstrong! The overall format doesn't have that much to do with Minnie, but the record's still pretty darn great – and the style is a mix of modern, mellow, and boogie – all served up with a real sense of earnestness that matches the cover of the album, and which makes the record stand strongly next to some of the bigger releases of the time. A number of tracks feature vocals by the lovely Pamela Morrison, and the group hails from the Oakland scene of the time – working here under the direction of Barbara J Trotter, who also wrote a good number of the titles on the set too. Titles include the dancefloor jammer "Sho Nuf Funky Beat", plus "We're Together Again", "I See Heaven", "Satisfaction To The Bone Nitty Gritty Naked Bone", "I'm A Lady", "Rapping With My Subconscious Mind", and "We're Together Again". Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Linda Babe MajikaDon't Treat Me So Bad ... LP
Gallo/Be With (UK), 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Groovy South African soul from Linda Bab Majika – a singer who's part of that new generation of positivity that was flowing out of the scene, reaching out here with a sound that's pretty universal in appeal! The music is more conventional 80s soul than you might expect – and richer and fuller than some of the synth-heavy work of the period in South African soul – still with lots of beats and keyboards, but a bolder production sound that really suits Linda's vocals! There are occasional elements that you might recognize from bigger crossover world acts – such as the South African artists who were getting play on US radio – but the overall sound is more soul than anything else, on titles that include "Let's Make A Deal", "It's Our Home", "Don't Treat Me So Bad", "Play Boy", and "Kunzima". ✨✧ Malibu Ken (Aesop Rock & Tobacco)Malibu Ken (blue colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Aesop Rock teams up with producer Tobacco as Malibu Ken – and one the best Aesop projects in years! There's a sly humor to Malibu Ken that doesn't play quite as cynical as at can on some the more dystopian sci-fi sounding production Aesop Rock has rhymed over going all the back to the Def Jux days. There's still nicely futuristic vibe, courtesy Tobacco with squalling synth sounds and beats like a digital engine revving up, but there's a more playful kind of vibe, too. Here's hoping this is only the first Malibu Ken LP! Includes "Corn Maze", "Tuesday", "Save Our Ship", "Sword Box", "Dog Years", "Acid King", ""Suicide Big Gulp", "Churro", "1+1=13" and "Purple Moss". ✨✧ Masked MaraudersMasked Marauders ... LP
Deity, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great idea for a late 60s rock record – even if the record itself is even better than its idea! The whole concept of the "masked marauders" was that the group was supposedly formed by big rockers of the time – unable to be listed on the cover, because of contractual obligations. And in truth, the set does sound a lot like it could have been lifted from sessions by The Rolling Stones, or Get Back-era Beatles – plus maybe a few other contemporaries too – yet it's all actually the work of some great unknowns, who came up with a sweet gimmick to get the record out there! On its own, the set's a real charmer – and has a mix of rootsy modes and tighter, deeper ideas that's not unlike some of the George Harrison/Phil Spector work – save for those moments when the Marauders are clearly trying to sound a bit more like a big name act. Titles include "I Can't Get No Nookie", "Cow Pie", "Duke Of Earl", "I Am The Japanese Sandman", "Later", "More Or Less Hudson's Bay Again", and "Season Of The Witch". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monster album that's gone onto influence a generation – but which was barely recognized at the time! Singer Eugene McDaniels had scored big with some pop hits in the 60s under the name Gene McDaniels – but here, he steps out in a righteous batch of offbeat funk tunes – filled with politics, offbeat rhythms, and some very weird instrumentation. The whole thing's awash in moody, jazzy changes – of the style that showed up often in samples by Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, and other artists who drew keen inspiration from this record. Titles include the massive "Jagger the Dagger" – plus "The Lord Is Back", "Lovin Man", "Headless Heroes", "Freedom Death Dance", and "Supermarket Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Ellen McIlwaineWe the People ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Very Good ... $9.99
Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene in Tokyo and Germany! The approach on this record is kind of like a mixture between Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell – lots of upbeat grooves, mixed with jazzy acoustic guitar and some wonderfully soaring vocals – in a style that needs to be heard to be fully understood. The standout cut is the amazing "Jimmy Jean", a soaring jazzy dance cut with unbelievable vocals – and other nice ones include "Sliding", "Ain't No Two Ways", and "All To You". LP, Vinyl record album

Bronze/Trading Places (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99
A surprisingly strong set from Osibisa – one that's got a full, rich, soulful feel – much better than we might have expected for an album recorded at the Royal Festival Hall! The venue's no surprise, though, given that Osibisa were clearly on top of their game at the time – and able to draw a big crowd at a prestigious event. The band has been expanded considerably for this live set to include extra percussion and backing vocals – all coming together with a majestic sound that almost beats the style used on some of the studio versions of these tunes! Titles include "The Dawn", "Living Loving Feeling", "Music For Gong Gong", "Sunshine Day", "Beautiful Seven Y Sharp", and a nice take on Roland Kirk's "Spirits Up Above". LP, Vinyl record album

LaFace, 1996. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $34.99
The huge creative leap forward for Outkast – and one of the greatest hip hop albums ever! The duo laid some incredible groundwork with the debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but this one is really their first (and stunningly, not their last) masterpiece. Timeless and soulful outer space grooves lace teh production and beats behind crazy good, free flowing, inventive rhymes that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL of the time. Most tracks have a laid back southern fried groove, and Dre and Big Boi's rhymes are as great as ever here. Essential! Tracks include "ATLiens", "Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac)", "Wheelz Of Steel", "Jazzy Belle", "Babylon", "Millennium", and "13th Floor/Growing Old". 14 cuts in all. LP, Vinyl record album

David Peel & The Lower East SideHave A Marijuana ... LP
Elektra, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Probably one of the most controversial records to be issued on Elektra at the end of the 60s – a rough-edged batch of hippie dippy tracks that shares a fair bit of energy and humor with The Fugs! The tunes here are perhaps a bit more focused than the work of The Fugs, but the group explore similar territory too – not just the drug references in the title, but also the kind of offbeat word play and double-entendres that were common at the time. The set was recorded "live on the streets of New York" – and Peel sings, and plays harmonica and guitar – with other instrumentation that includes two 12-string guitars, bass, and tambourine. Titles include "Mother Where Is My Father", "Here Comes A Cop", "Up Against The Wall", "I've Got Some Grass", "I Do My Bawling In The Bathroom", and "Show Me The Way To Get Stoned". Beautiful soundtrack work from Piero Piccioni – an early score, but filled with the kind of weird, offbeat sounds that have always made him a genius! There's a bit of a link here – between earlier Italian scoring, ala Nino Rota, and some of the later, modder sounds of Piccioni's late 60s generation – a really cool blend that comes through in the way the horns play with the rhythms, and the organ has a strange, almost outer-space sort of quality! One number has a cool batucada feel, and the whole thing's got a brilliant Italian cinematic quality – a true under-discovered gem from the great Piccioni. Classic Prince – an album that signaled an end to the first part of Prince's storied career, leaning heavily on his fascination with new wave, mixed with the r&b grooves and 70s funk of his earliest LPs. Prince is definitely in a transitional mode here, the easy politics of the punk era – "Ronnie Talk To Russia", "Controversy" – are less controversial than Prince's frank sexuality on the record – best heard on tracks like "Jack U Off", "Do Me, Baby", and "Sexuality" – but the unbeatable pop groove of the title cut definitely points the way to Prince's big chart success to come. Laidback beats with plenty of boom – just the right sort of mellow setting to allow the rhymes to flow in the best way possible – core lyrics from Emcee Sick, with contributions from Cudtry Cadillac, Dheema, and Jon Blazini! There's a nicely jazzy current – almost in an early 90s Tribe Called Quest style, but more individual, as the best instrumental touches are live, and less tied to the historical references that samples might provide. Both the rhythms and lyrics are nicely straightforward – again a nice sort of throwback, but hardly retro at all – on titles that include "Pstabull", "Finesseful", "Basso", "Indestructible 92", "Big Bad Signal", "Anotha Monday Nite", and "Wanderverse". ✨✧ Sun Ra & John CageJohn Cage Meets Sun Ra – The Complete Concert (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Meltdown/Modern Harmonic, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary meeting of talents from two different sides of the underground – avant composer John Cage and jazz visionary Sun Ra – both performing together at a special one-night event that took place at Coney Island in 1987! The set doesn't really feature Ra jamming with Cage (as if anyone could "jam" with John Cage!) – and instead, both players were on the stage at the same time, but would each step aside to let the other do their thing – Cage would vocalize in these amazing passages that are right up there with the most beautiful vocal work he ever did, alongside some "silent" performances too – and Ra would play keyboard solos that have a beautifully offbeat electric vibe! The pair do come together at one point – but mostly in a "silent" duet, although one title does feature Cage's weird vocals with Ra's keyboard. And big bonus – this package also presents the full complete concert – with material that appears here for the first time ever – including a beautiful vocals from June Tyson over Ra's keyboards on "Enlightenment", other Ra numbers that include "This Is The Space Age", "The Living Parable", "The Damned Air", and "We Hold This Myth To Be Potential". A sweet bit of funky soul from the Florida scene in the early 80s – a completely charming modern soul effort that's quite different than the bigger Miami hits of the decade before! These guys have a sense of integrity that comes through in their look on the cover – unassuming, and very down to earth – which maybe gives the whole thing that nice indie vibe of New Jersey work from ten years before, but with some of the grooves and styles that might be more contemporary to 1981! Vocals are often harmonized, in ways that again go back to older New Jersey or Philly soul – and the album balances funky upbeat tracks with some mighty nice ballads. A seminal set from Vicki Sue Robinson – arguably her biggest album ever, thanks to the leadoff hit "Turn The Beat Around"! That groove really sets the tone for the rest of the record – a tight blend of disco rhythms and crossover soul – all delivered by Vicki with a focused, no-nonsense quality that's helped the record stay strong over the years! The instrumentation's kind of a New York summation of Philly modes – a bit of soaring strings, organic percussion, wah wah guitar, and whatever else a great groove might need – mostly arranged by Warren Schatz, but with some help from George Andrews and Bhen Lanzaroni too. Revelation sing a bit of background vocals on the record – and titles include "When You're Lovin Me", "Act Of Mercy", "Wonderland Of Love", "Lack Of Respect", and "Never Gonna Let You Go". A set recorded late in the career of Millie Scott – given that she contributed vocals to some hip girl groups in the 70s – but a standout solo moment too, and one that showed she could make some big waves on her own! The album's got a nice early urban sort of feel – echoes of street soul in the mix, but never as much as you might find on some of the indie efforts of this sort on labels like Next Plateau or Sutra – just the right amount to keep things away from the mainstream cliches of the time. Most numbers have a fair bit of beats at the bottom, but they're often well done, and never dominate Millie's vocals too much – and tracks include "Automatic", "Prisoner Of Love", "Love Me Right", "Let's Talk It Over", "2 Hot 2 Handle", and "One Stop Lover". Fierce funky work from this late 80s UK duo – contemporaries of Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and some of the other big British acts of the time – but a pair who never fully got their due! The "street soul" title here is really well-placed – as the grooves have a style that's an evolution of earlier electro modes – warmed up nicely, in the style that Jazzie B and his generation were bringing to the scene – but maybe still lean enough in construction to still appeal to fans of the previous generation! Two tracks here get a bit clubby, but in a good way, and the others are more in a midtempo groove, nicely bouncing along with the beats – on titles that include "R U Available", "Change/Love", "In & Out Of Love", "It's All Over", "Waiting 4 Your Love", and "The Way Love Is". One of our favorites ever cut by Tex-Mex soulsters Sunny & The Sunliners – largely because it's got some really nice funk tracks! The album features a set of all English language tracks – with Sunny Ozuna singing in his best sweet soul style on the ballad tracks, and hitting a raw raw groove on the harder-hitting numbers, really nailing the groove on both fronts. One of the highlights of the album is actually an instrumental reading of "Soul Power" – done with a nice chunky groove – and other great tracks include sweet harmony readings of "Together" and "Cross My Heart", plus the upbeat tunes "Boogaloo Down Broadway" and "Hip Huggin Minnie". A wicked bit of 80s electro soul – one that's heavy on Yamaha keyboards and beats, but which was also recorded in Gabon – which gives the whole record a very different sound than New York material of the time! The rhythms are definitely in the funky soul side of the spectrum, but have different inflections and directions than big city beats from the street – maybe more complexity at points, but also a willingness to step back and allow some spots of bluesier inflections in the other instrumentation, which is mostly guitar – an instrument that has less of a rhythmic role here than on the usual soul album. Escrow/Passion (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A strange name for a group that hardly stood the test of time – but a great record that's well worth discovering! Timeless Legend were a young soul group from Columbus Ohio in the mid 70s – and on this rare LP, they've got a sweet little style that's every bit as great as that of bigger acts of the time – sometimes as fragile as New Jersey male groups, other times as tight as the best from Philly! The group's really got their harmonies down well – shifting easily from sweet ballads to more upbeat numbers, working in a mellow 70s style that's made the album a lost treasure for soul collectors for years. Every cut's a winner – all original material handled with a professionalism and soulful care that makes for a very solid record overall! Tone's done some big name work for Common, Kanye, and others – but here, he's very much at home inside his wonderful little shell – creating these endlessly creative sounds that really move past the obvious, and which showcase the kind of richer sonic palette we would have guessed from his record shopping habits over the years! There's a few 80s electro modes that come as a great surprise, mixed with harder core elements too – and there's occasional moments of sweetness, too – a emotional range that comes across nicely, on titles that include "N'Loveagain", "Tuff Love", "The Sound", "Do It Properly", "Taxi Cab Confessions", "The Lite", "Baby Steps", and "Ancestors & Angels". The mid 90s classic from Underground Kingz – they're commerical breakthrough, with all the uncompromising grit of their first few records on the lyrical tip, albeit with a stripped down soulful resonance to a lot of beatcraft. The gritty rhymes is the unifying element here, with tracks that split the difference between lean, crisply bouncing, hard-hitting production and surprisingly soul and funk steeped tracks. It works great on both sides of that style divide, and it's little wonder that made such a big impact at the time. Stands the test of time, too. An overlooked Motown nugget from the early 80s – the smoking debut of Gene Van Buren! Gene's a fully-formed artist right from the get-go – writing and producing the set with a rich, mature groove that's totally great – some of the upbeat funky soul tracks that were Motown's biggest asset in the early 80s, mixed with some even better mature moments that are especially wonderful – that sort of all-adult soul approach the label would take on more strongly later in the decade, showcased beautifully here by Van Buren's talents. The groovers have a bit of electro touches – usually some mini-moog keyboards – and the mellower ones have a warmer sound that really rounds things out nicely. A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great! Like Earth Wind & Fire at their best, War have this way of staying strong and righteous, while still able to hit a hook – jamming one minute, but finding sharp focus the next – and balancing it all out over the course of an album so that there's a sense of depth that really keeps on going once the familiar cuts draw you in. In this case, the familiar cuts are giants – the stunning Latin funk gem "Low Rider", which became an anthem for a generation, and the radio hit "Why Can't We Be Friends" – mixed with other nuggets like the jazzy "Don't No One Get You Down", the funky "Heartbeat", and the cuts "Lotus Blossom", "Smile Happy", "So", and "Leroy's Latin Lament". A funky big band album, recorded by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, with the great Joe Williams on vocals! The record is one of the most sought-after by the team – probably because it includes the hard breakbeat version of "Get Out of My Life Woman" that's been sampled often over the years. (Actually, hasn't every version of it been sampled by someone?) The other tracks are pretty funky, too, with nice soul groovers like "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Woman's Got Soul", and "How Sweet It Is". ✨✧ WinstonsColor Him Father ... LP
Metromedia, Late 60s. Fair ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The one and only album ever cut by The Winstons – an obscure mixed-race soul combo who had roots in Otis Redding's touring band, and who hit big with a soul Grammy in 1969 for the title track to this one, "Color Him Father". The cut's an amazing document of its time, a sweet little story-song about a boy who's lost his dad in the war (Vietnam?), and who grows to love the new guy that his mom is dating. Sounds sappy, but it's one of the most compelling soul singles of the 60s – and is always a treat to hear. The other big cut on the record is the classic breakbeat track "Amen Brother", which is an instrumental reading of the gospel standard, done in a fast-funk style that's been sampled for years – both by hip hoppers and by drum n bass producers! (Noteworthy, too, is the fact that this 33rpm album offers a bonus on the cut that the 45rpm single does not – you can play the album at 45rpm to speed up the break in the track, getting a great jungle effect!) The rest of the record is pretty good – but mostly features the group trying to cover work by other artists, on songs like "The Chokin Kind", "The Greatest Love", "Everyday People", and "Only The Strong Survive". One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi".
