✨✧ Art BlakeyBig Beat ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Art Blakey Blue Note sessions of all time – and perhaps one of the greatest to realize the genius of the Jazz Messengers lineup that included Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano! The trio of young talents are at the height of their early soulful powers here – working with Blakey and bassist Jymie Merritt in a set of tunes that are overflowing with expressive solos, unusual timings, and the Blakey genius for mixing bold statements with personally introspective moments. Nearly every track on the record's a classic – and titles include an early version of Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere", plus Wayne Shorter's beautiful tunes "Lester Left Town", "Chess Players", and "Sakeena's Vision". Butch Engle & The StyxNo Matter What You Say – The Best Of Butch Engle & The Styx ... LP
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Surprisingly strong work from a Bay Area group who never managed to crack the big time back in the day – then hung up their guitars at a time when most of their contemporaries were really starting to blossom! Maybe the issue was that Butch Engel & The Styx had experience going back to the start of the 60s – moving through familiar guitar-based modes for the first part of the decade, before really hitting their stride with the wonderful sounds on this record – done partly in collaboration with Beau Brummel Ron Elliott, who helped produced and lent them some songs – but also with this increasingly heartfelt, freewheeling quality that could have put them at the height of the SF scene, had they kept going. The set features rare singles issued on the Golden State, Loma, MEA, and Onyx labels – plus some excellent unreleased tracks too – titles that include "I Call Her Name", "Left Hand Girl", "Hey I'm Lost", "Going Home", "I Like Her", "Puppetmaster", "If You Believe", "Tell Me Please", and "She Is Love". ✨✧ Joe TexLive & Lively ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A tasty live set, with a smoking raw groove that you don't always get on Joe's studio albums! The crowd really goes wild for Joe – and with only some small group backing behind him, he's got nothing left to do but go over the top with his vocals! As proof of that, the record includes the great breakbeat track "Papa Was, Too", with a hard funky beat and sample riff that you'll recognize from way back. (Not only that, but the cut's a great answer to Otis & Carla's famous "Tramp".) Other tracks include the hit "Skinny Legs & All" (an answer to "Big Leg Woman"?), plus "Wooden Spoon", "Don't Give Up", and "Show Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Act One (Act 1)Act One ... LP
Spring, 1974. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! Titles include "Goodbye Love", "Friends Or Lovers", "Tom the Peeper", "Party Hardy People", "I Don't Want To Know What You Do To Me", "Still Waters", "It's The Same Old Story", and "Love's Got Your Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BeatlesMagical Mystery Tour ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Fair Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderfully trippy record from The Beatles – filled with songs that have become classics, even though the initial package was designed for a movie that was one heck of a mess! The set's incredibly strong throughout – filled with some of the new post-Peppers ideas explored by the group, yet also with some catchier numbers too – great sing-songy tracks that undoubtedly were a big mainstream influence to the world of late 60s psych! Titles include "Blue Jay Way", "The Fool On The Hill", "Flying", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", and "Baby You're A Rich Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. NOTE – Vinyl is in Fair condition. Booklet is detached but still included. Cover has small seam splits and a small name in pen on front.)

Louie BellsonLondon Gig ... LP
Pablo, 1982. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Louie Bellson recorded in London – heading up a big band that features Frank Strazzeri on piano, Geurge Duvivier on bass, and a heck of a lot of horn players in the mix! The group's got a bold, upbeat sort of feel – similar to some of the later Buddy Rich groups of the 70s – and given Rich's popularity in the UK, one might almost think that Bellson's going for a similar vibe here! Tracks are long, with just the right amount of complicated overtones to keep things interesting – and titles include "Blues For Freddy", "Sing A Song Of Love", "Santos", "Put It Right There", "Jus Fer Us", and "Drum Squad". ✨✧ BlondieParallel Lines ... LP
Chrysalis, 1978. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
The breakthrough album by Blondie! Parallel Lines is their third album overall, and having been released only 7 months after their second, you know they were hungry to break big – and they do it here with unbeatable cool. For as tight and bright as as the sound is, a trademark of producer Mike Chapman, there's still something of the raucous downtown energy here – and also some pretty great stylistic strides, such as the disco-aware smash "Heart Of Glass". Includes the equally classic "One Way Or Another" plus "Hanging On The Telephone", "Just Go Away", "I Know But I Don't Know" "Will Anything Happen", "Picture This", "11:59 and more. ✨✧ Miquel BrownManpower ... LP
TSR, 1983. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Plenty of Manpower from Miquel Brown– the Canadian club singer who scored big with the classic "So Many Man So Little Time" club cut in the early 80s – then followed it up with this full album of late disco grooves! Brown's vocal approach is in the higher side of the spectrum – and the cuts take off on the style of some of the Canadian disco modes for divas from a few years before – but feature some instrumentation that's a bit more 80s, especially in the keyboards and beats. There's a few older soul touches at times – and the album's produced by Ian Levine and arranged by co-producer Fiachra Trench – usually in a mode that's somewhat poppy and hook-heavy. Titles include "So Many Men So Little Time", "Manpower", "Beeline", "Sunny Day", "He's A Saint He's A Sinner", and "Maybe He Forgot". LP, Vinyl record album

5th Dimension5th Dimension Live! ... LP
Bell, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A groovy little live album from The 5th Dimension – not nearly as smoothly polished as their studio albums, in a way that really makes the set stand out nicely! The vocals are still completely top-shelf – a heavenly sound that's hard to believe comes from five mere mortals – but the musical backings are a bit more rough-edged and soul-based – a harder groove than the group gets on their full albums, in a way that provides a great contrast to the harmonies on the lyrics! There's also a great sense of "liveness" to the set – patter from the group before the tunes, and some upbeat medleys of some of their bigger hits – strung together in ways that are a lot nicer than just simple live remakes of familiar songs. Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Friend", "Eli's Coming", "Never My Love", "Shake Your Tambourine", "Ode To Billie Joe", "I Want To Take You Higher", and two longer medleys of hits! ✨✧ Freddie JacksonRock Me Tonight ... LP
Capitol, 1985. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Freddie Jackson was certainly one of the biggest new soul stars of the 80s – and this debut LP is still a treasure! Freddie's got a skill that transcends his age – with an approach that's decidedly 80s, but classic enough to last for years and years. The songs on the record are all extremely well-written, and although the arrangements have certain elements that might date – like DX7, drum machine beats, and floppy bass pedal riffing – the quality of the work is super-high all around, and Freddie's rich soul vocals hold everything together perfectly. Catchy tunes abound – and tracks include "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)", "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)", "Calling", "I Wanna Say I Love You", and "You Are My Lady". Rebbie JacksonReaction ... LP
Columbia, 1986. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A smoking second album from Rebbie Jackson – a set that has Rebbie working with strong production help from two of the bigger aspects of the Columbia Records soul family in the 80s – Tito Jackson and Reggie Lucas, who each handle a handful of songs along with David Conley and Howie Rice. The album's got a bubbly, perky approach to soul – almost more catchy and beat-heavy than Jackson's debut for the label, with cuts that include "Reaction", "Ticket To Love", "Ain't No Way To Love", "Lessons In The Fine Art Of Love", "Always Wanting Something", "You Send The Rain Away", and "If You Don't Call". Al Lirvat & Robert Mavouzny QuintetBlowin' At The Cigale ... LP
Numera (France), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A very cool record from saxophonist Robert Mavouzny and trombonist Al Lirvat – the latter of whom also cut some biguine albums on the French scene of the 70s! This set's maybe a bit straighter jazz, but you can definitely hear some unusual touches at play – as the group opens up with help from Xavier Chambon on trumpet, Wolf Schubert on piano, Jack Sewing on bass, and Michael Silva on piano. A few moments are more swing, but others are more offbeat – a very unusual session! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Curtis MayfieldGot To Find A Way ... LP
Curtom, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as played-out as some of Curtis' bigger hits. The production style's still the same – with plenty of rumbling funky soul, arranged by Rich Tufo in that classic Curtom mode – and you can't beat Curtis' vocals on songs like "Mother's Son", "Love Me (Right In the Pocket)", "A Prayer", and "Ain't No Love Lost". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ellen McIlwaineWe the People ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene in Tokyo and Germany! The approach on this record is kind of like a mixture between Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell – lots of upbeat grooves, mixed with jazzy acoustic guitar and some wonderfully soaring vocals – in a style that needs to be heard to be fully understood. The standout cut is the amazing "Jimmy Jean", a soaring jazzy dance cut with unbelievable vocals – and other nice ones include "Sliding", "Ain't No Two Ways", and "All To You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PrinceControversy ... LP
Warner, 1981. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic Prince – an album that signaled an end to the first part of Prince's storied career, leaning heavily on his fascination with new wave, mixed with the r&b grooves and 70s funk of his earliest LPs. Prince is definitely in a transitional mode here, the easy politics of the punk era – "Ronnie Talk To Russia", "Controversy" – are less controversial than Prince's frank sexuality on the record – best heard on tracks like "Jack U Off", "Do Me, Baby", and "Sexuality" – but the unbeatable pop groove of the title cut definitely points the way to Prince's big chart success to come. Vicki Sue RobinsonNever Gonna Let You Go ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A seminal set from Vicki Sue Robinson – arguably her biggest album ever, thanks to the leadoff hit "Turn The Beat Around"! That groove really sets the tone for the rest of the record – a tight blend of disco rhythms and crossover soul – all delivered by Vicki with a focused, no-nonsense quality that's helped the record stay strong over the years! The instrumentation's kind of a New York summation of Philly modes – a bit of soaring strings, organic percussion, wah wah guitar, and whatever else a great groove might need – mostly arranged by Warren Schatz, but with some help from George Andrews and Bhen Lanzaroni too. Revelation sing a bit of background vocals on the record – and titles include "When You're Lovin Me", "Act Of Mercy", "Wonderland Of Love", "Lack Of Respect", and "Never Gonna Let You Go". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TurtlesHappy Together ... LP
White Whale, 1967. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title cut may well be the biggest tune The Turtles ever recorded – but the whole album's overflowing with the group's brilliance – and their wonderful ear for offbeat tunes for the Sunshine Pop generation! As with "Happy Together", there's a nice edge to a lot of the tracks here – sweet, but with currents of darkness too – as if the group's looking at pop from the outside – able to effortlessly do their thing, while also twisting things around a bit. Yet they also take themselves more than seriously enough to hit pop perfection throughout – on titles that include "Guide For The Married Man", "The Walking Song", "Think I'll Run Away", "Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "Like The Seasons", and "Rugs Of Woods & Flowers". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove and some pen. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ UGK (Underground Kingz)Ridin' Dirty (clean promo pressing) ... LP
Jive, 1996. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The mid 90s classic from Underground Kingz – they're commerical breakthrough, with all the uncompromising grit of their first few records on the lyrical tip, albeit with a stripped down soulful resonance to a lot of beatcraft. The gritty rhymes is the unifying element here, with tracks that split the difference between lean, crisply bouncing, hard-hitting production and surprisingly soul and funk steeped tracks. It works great on both sides of that style divide, and it's little wonder that made such a big impact at the time. Stands the test of time, too. 10 clean edited tracks: "One Day", "Murder", "Pinky Ring", "You Don't Know Me Fool", "Diamonds & Wood", "3 In The Mornin'", "Touched", "Ride My Car", "Good Stuff" and "Ridin' Dirty". LP, Vinyl record album
(Clean edited promo in a stickered sleeve.)

✨✧ WarWhy Can't We Be Friends? ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great! Like Earth Wind & Fire at their best, War have this way of staying strong and righteous, while still able to hit a hook – jamming one minute, but finding sharp focus the next – and balancing it all out over the course of an album so that there's a sense of depth that really keeps on going once the familiar cuts draw you in. In this case, the familiar cuts are giants – the stunning Latin funk gem "Low Rider", which became an anthem for a generation, and the radio hit "Why Can't We Be Friends" – mixed with other nuggets like the jazzy "Don't No One Get You Down", the funky "Heartbeat", and the cuts "Lotus Blossom", "Smile Happy", "So", and "Leroy's Latin Lament". LP, Vinyl record album
(In shrinkwrap with tape along all seams and a gold record award sticker.)

Joe WilliamsPresenting Joe Williams And Thad Jones Mel Lewis (purple cover) ... LP
Solid State, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
A funky big band album, recorded by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, with the great Joe Williams on vocals! The record is one of the most sought-after by the team – probably because it includes the hard breakbeat version of "Get Out of My Life Woman" that's been sampled often over the years. (Actually, hasn't every version of it been sampled by someone?) The other tracks are pretty funky, too, with nice soul groovers like "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Woman's Got Soul", and "How Sweet It Is". Players include Pepper Adams, Joe Farrell, Jerome Richardson, and Roland Hanna – and the Jones/Lewis group is at the height of its hipness here! LP, Vinyl record album
