Great work from the godlike hands of Russ Garcia – one of the most underrated arrangers of the 50s, and a talent who really helped make the sound of
Bethlehem Records great at the time! Garcia's leading a four-trombone frontline that includes Frank Rosolino, Herbie Harper, Tommy Pederson, and Maynard Ferguson – players who have this great west coast way of coming together in a cool, compressed tone – never too overdone or hokey, and set up perfectly with Garcia's arrangements! The backing is by a small rhythm group that includes Marty Paich on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levy on drums – and the main focus is on this post-JJ & Kai style of bringing trombones together, then letting really complicated, magical things happen with their sounds. Titles include "I'll Never Forget What's Her Name", "Zigeuner", "Limehouse Blues", "Lush Life", "Ramona", and "What Is This Thing Called Love".
(Original red label pressing, with deep groove! Vinyl has a click on one track, but plays really well overall – and cover is nice.)
