✨✧ Pepper Adams & Donald ByrdStardust – The Bethlehem Years (aka Motor City Scene) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most hard-hitting sessions ever recorded for the Bethlehem label – and a rare date for the imprint by the team of trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Pepper Adams! The style here is similar to work the pair recorded for Riverside and Blue Note at the same time – razor-sharp hardbop, played with a strong sense of imagination, and plenty of room for drawn-out, creatively-blown solos. Adams is especially great – playing the baritone here with the leanness of a tenor sax – but Byrd is wonderful too, and really starts to break out of some of the more staid modes of his work from a few years back. The group's a sextet that includes guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer "Hey" Lewis (pseudonym for Lewis Hayes) – on titles that include "Trio", "Philson", "Libeccio", and "Bitty Ditty". Ruby BraffBall At Bethlehem With Braff ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1954/1955. Used ... $16.99
Ruby Braff has a ball on this rare date for Bethlehem Records – a set that's got a live, loose feel that's quite different than some of Ruby's other records! The date was recorded on New Years Eve, at the end of 1954 – and it features Braff stepping out with these surprisingly human, almost fragile solos in the company of a small group that features Eddie Hubble on trombone, Dick Katz on piano, Sam Margolis on tenor, Gene Ramey on bass, and Izzy Sklar on drums. The liveness really makes for a different record than the usual Braff date – and titles include "Rosettana", "You Can Depend On Me", "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Write Myself A Letter", and "Sometimes I'm Happy". Conte CandoliConte Candoli (Bethlehem) (aka Powerhouse Trumpet) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good+ ... $59.99
One of the best 50s albums from trumpeter Conte Candoli – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how often Conte recorded during the decade! The set's got an edge you don't always find on other Candoli sessions – especially some of the large group material – and the group's nice and small, and very tight – with Bill Holman on tenor, Lou Levy on piano, Larry Marable on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass. The quintet cooks wonderfully – with very sharp, soulful solos from both Holman and Candoli – at a level that's got more of the Mode Records bite than some other Bethlehem sides from the west coast at the time. Obviously, the rhythm section's a great one – and really helps the record cook – on titles that include "Full Count", "Four", "Groovin Higher", and "Jazz City Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Bethlehem/Avenue, Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The complete works of Helen Carr – one of the best female jazz singers to record for the Bethlehem label, and an icy-voiced siren with a wonderful style. The set features 20 tracks in all – lifted from one full LP and a shorter 10" set – and all cuts feature small group backing, with players like Howard Roberts, Don Fagerquist, Max Bennett, Red Mitchell, and Charlie Mariano, whose icy alto really adds a new dimension to the set. The CD's worth it alone for Carr's classic reading of "Down In The Depths Of The 90th Floor" – but also includes many other great tracks, like "Lonely Street", "Do I Worry", "Not Mine", "I Don't Want To Cry Anymore", and "Memory Of The Rain". John ColtraneJohn Coltrane – The Bethlehem Years (Winner's Circle/Art Blakey Big Band) ... CD
Bethlehem, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time. The second set of tracks was recorded for a unique big band session led by Art Blakey – featuring a core group with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop Jr, and Wendell Marshall on some tracks – plus a larger lineup on a number of others. The CD brings together a whopping 27 tracks from these sessions, including some great alternate takes – and titles include "Midriff", "Tippin", "The Outer World", "The Kiss Of No Return", "Pristine Take", and "Oasis" – a previously unreleased track! Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A nice selection of recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! The music's a bit atypical for Trane, but is more than just a curiosity, with Trane fitting nicely into the poll winner's type setting of the first session and heavier large lineup of the latter nicely. 7 numbers in all, including "Pristine", "If I'm Lucky (I'll Be The One)", "Tippin'", "Midriff", "Turtle Walk", "Love & The Weather" and "The Outer World". ✨✧ Duke EllingtonBethlehem Years Vol 1 (aka Historically Speaking) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The album's a bit less "historical" than you might guess from the title – at least at the time it was issued in the mid 50s! The material is from Chicago sessions recorded in 1956 – unusual non-Columbia material for the period, featuring the Ellington group working in a slightly older-styled mode. Much of the material is from the earlier songbook of the orchestra – but it's done here with some slight modern touches that show the 50s impulses of the group firmly in place. Players include Cat Anderson and Clark Terry on trumpet, Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and Harry Carney on baritone sax – and titles include "Midriff", "Ko Ko", "Lonesome Lullaby", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", "Jack The Bear", "Stompy Jones", and "Creole Love Call". Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A very interesting date as a leader from tenorist Bud Freeman – partly because it's a rare date for the Bethlehem label, and partly because it's got Freeman stretching out in a different vibe than usual! The sound isn't nearly as trad as you might expect – and instead, the record's got a feel that's almost like some of the Verve Records swing sessions of the 50s – an evolved version of older modes, taken into a small combo setting that really allows some great space for personal and individual solos! In addition to Freeman's tenor, the record features some mighty nice work from Ruby Braff on trumpet – plus Al Hall on bass, George Wettling on drums, and either Ken Kersey or Dave Bowman on piano. Titles include "Hanid", "Newport News", "Stop Look & Listen", "Perdido", and "Dave's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

A great set that brings together rare work by two lost female jazz vocalists from the 50s! Both Audrey Morris and Paula Castle recorded for the Bethlehem label during the time – in a cool, icy style that was similar to work by the label's more famous singer, Chris Connor – and both Audrey and Paula had a similar simple jazz-based approach that makes their work well worth tracking down if you're a fan of female singers. Audrey's represented here by 12 tracks – including "What More Women Do", "If Love Were More", "Blue Turning Gray", "If You Could See", and "I Go For That". Australian All Stars (with Don Burrows)Jazz For Surf-Niks Vol 2 (with bonus track) ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1960. Used ... $18.99
A pivotal moment in the development of Australian jazz – as a quintet featuring Don Burrows, the country's greatest reed player of the 60s and 70s, got this rare chance to cut a record for a US label during an American tour! Even at a young age, Burrows is fantastic on a range of horns – alto, baritone, and flute – and he's working here with tenorist Dave Rutledge, pianist Terry Wilkinson, bassist Freddy Logan, and drummer Ron Webber – a group of lesser-known players, but who really keep up with Burrows' inventive lines. Tracks are short and arranged by the group with a breezy boppish feel – and titles include "Criss Cross", "Pearly", "Steynelus", "Freshwater", "Lotus Bud", and "Down The Mine". Cool "surf" cover, too! CD also features the bonus track "Sky Lounge Blues". CD

Forget the hokey kangaroo picture on the cover, because the record's a mighty sweet set of 50s modern jazz – played by some key musicians from Australian who were working in the US at the time! The record's got a style that's somewhere between the hippest sessions of LA and Sweden at the time – all the coolness of both scenes, but a sense of playful expression that really comes through on some of the more unusual passages. The core group features Errol Buddle and Dick Healey on reeds, Bryce Rhode on piano, and Jack Brokensha on vibes – with added work from John Fawcett or Jimmy Gannon on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums. Side one features the extended "Jazz In D Minor" suite – penned by Bill Holman, and a great showcase for the group's creative reed work from Dick Healey and Errol Buddle – the latter of whom plays some bassoon at a level that's a lot more swinging than you might expect. And as on other albums, the real highligh comes from the enigmatic piano of Bryce Rhode and vibes of Jack Brokensha – who shade things in wonderfully, and create a sense of color that's hard to match. The style's never too free here – not in an avant jazz way – but the group's definitely opening up a bit more than before, and making even more magic with their music! The lineup has changed a bit from earlier albums from this combo – but key Australian players are still very much on hand – the great Bryce Rhode on piano, Jack Brokensha on vibes, and Errol Buddle on reeds! Rhode is one of the best pianists of the time – sadly overlooked upon his 60s return to Australian (where he made some wonderful records) – and his careful sense of tone really starts things off wonderfully – and brings more out of the vibes than we've ever heard on Brokensha's later records. The set's got a bit more punch than some other Bethlehem vocal dates, but it also has a nice sense of spontaneity too – never over-arranged or too staid, in ways that really show off Blake's swinging side. A well-titled set from Art Blakey – considering the hard-driving sound of the group! The album's one of the best from that unusual year of 1957 – almost a "lost" year for Art, when he was working away from Blue Note with a very different lineup of the Jazz Messengers than on his famous sessions for that label! CD

One of the tightest, sharpest sessions ever from trumpeter Conte Candoli – an early date done for Bethlehem Records, with a quartet setting that gives Conte plenty of room to cook! The solos are bold and fierce right from the start – with an energy that goes beyond even Candoli's work in bigger groups – and the rhythms are often very lively, and seem to push Conte onto his best level of expression – thanks to work from Stan Levey on drums, Max Bennett on bass, and Claude Williamson on piano. There's a bit more bite here than you'd guess from the west coast pedigree of the group – and titles include "On The Alamo", "I Can't Get Started", "Tune For Tex", "Fine & Dandy", "Night Flight", and "I'll Remember April". One of the darkest vocal jazz albums of the 50s – packaged with a great title and cover image that features a lone lit window in a New York skyscraper! Helen's got some incredible backing on the record – a small combo that includes Charlie Mariano on alto sax, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, and Donn Trenner on piano – all gently sliding in behind Carr's blue vocals in a way that's similar to some of the Chris Connor work on Bethlehem from the same time. A great Bethlehem Records date from vibes man Teddy Charles – stepping out here in a set that's one of his most openly swinging of the time! The record still has some of the modern currents of Teddy's other work, but also makes great use of Zoot Sims on tenor – really pushing him out front for some bold solos on most numbers – in a great group that also includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Sam Most on flute, and Dave McKenna on piano. There's a bit of audience noise at times, but we can't tell for sure if this is an actual live album – given the clarity of the performances throughout. John Coltrane & OthersWinner's Circle (aka John Coltrane In The Winner's Circle) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good+ ... $49.99
Rare material from John Coltrane – tracks that were done for Bethlehem Records at a time when he was just rising up as a leader, and still contributed work as a sideman! The album features Trane playing tenor on only four of the album's eight tracks – making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title – but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs – possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing – but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music. Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups – such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date – but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work – on titles that include "She Didn't Say Yes", "Turtle Walk", "At Home With The Blues", "Seabreeze", and "Love & The Weather". Joe's got an easily swinging style that's a bit in the mode of other 50s male singers, like Bobby Troup or Jackie Paris – but he's also a bit more fragile, in that intimate style used more by female singers like Chris Connor or June Christy – not nearly as icy, but with a sense of care that really comes through strongly in this rare Bethlehem release. There's a sharp, angular groove to many of the numbers here – that mix of modern and hardbop that was cresting best in the early 60s Blue Note generation – and which echoes some of the work that Little had done with Max Roach in the years before this date. The lineup's filled with great players to help Book realize his strongest musical vision – Julian Priester on trombone, George Coleman on tenor, Don Friedman on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and although the set's issued on the sometimes-staid Bethlehem label, it's got all the sharper edges of an early 60s date on a label like Impulse or Candid! Titles include "Matilde", "Booker's Blues", "Forward Flight", and "Victory and Sorrow". CD

Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $29.99
Fantastic stuff all around – and an early treasure from Herbie Mann! From the outside, the record appears to be a mellow album of easy listening tunes – but on the inside, it's a darkly tuned session – one that's filled with sorrow and haunting emotions that you'd never find in any other Herbie Mann album! Herbie's the main soloist – playing flute in front of orchestrations by Ralph Burns and Frank Hunter, both of whom do an incredible job with the record – filling it with strange off-kilter string parts that totally underpin any of the mellow side of Herbie's playing. Burns' work is especially great, and rivals some of his best material of this sort for Verve. Titles include "Love & The Weather", "Ill Wind", "Moon Love", "High On A Windy Hill", and "The Morning Side Of The Mountain". LP, Vinyl record album

Twin-flute magic from the quintet of Herbie Mann and Sam Most – both of whom play the long, thin instrument here – in intertwining lines of sound that are totally great! There's a style here that's often a bit more frenetic than usual for Herbie – one that's possibly picked up from Most, as might be heard on some of his later sides from the 60s. Whatever the case, even when things are gentle, there's some nice little interplay – a lot of action from both flute players, supported by guitar from Joe Puma, bass from Jimmy Gannon, and drums from Lee Kleinman. Arrangements are by Russ Garcia, and titles include "It's Only Sunshine", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Empathy", "Seven Come Eleven", "Just One Of Those Things", and "Flying Home". CD

Brilliant early work from Charlie Mariano – key proof of his genius, and one of the main albums we'd recommend by him! The album has Charlie coming of his years in the Boston scene – boppish at some level, but blowing with a raspy soulfulness that really opens up his horn into new territory – not Charlie Parker, not Lee Konitz, but a whole new space and sound of expression for the alto sax! The group features Stu Williamson on trumpet and Frank Rosolino on trombone – both players who bring a slight west coast feel to the record, but never in too-cool ways that dampen Mariano's sound! Titles include "Green Walls", "Chloe", "Manteca", "S'Nice", "You Go To My Head", and "Give A Little Whistle". CD

Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time – blown with a tone and sense of soul that goes way beyond some of Mariano's contemporaries at the time! The album was recorded for Bethlehem Records, and is relatively straight – but Charlie already shows a sense of complexity in his presentation that hints at all the greatness to come – and which bursts out here with some refreshing energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s – and he gets some strong rhythm support from the trio of John Williams on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Titles include "Blues", "Floormat", "I Heard You Cried Last Night", "Johnny One Note", and "King For A Day". CD

Incredible early work from Charlie Mariano – The format is simple – sextet grooving from a standard Bethlehem group that includes Stu Williamson on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Claude Williamson on piano – but somehow Charlie manages to create a level of energy that really blows away any expectations you might have. All players crackle with a level of electricity that's not that common for Bethlehem sides of the time – and Charlie himself steps forth with an incredible tone on the alto – icy, raspy, and with more soul than you'd expect for his young years. 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the best of the early 60s comeback albums by the legendary bop trumpeter Howard McGhee – and a record that really has the player finding a whole new groove in his music! At this point, Maggie's got a fantastic tone that was missing from his earlier records, filled with pain and raw emotion – but also measured with a maturity that gives his solos an incredible sense of economy that delivers a whole hell of a lot with just a few simple notes – a balance that comes through beautifully here, maybe even more so than on any other record by Howard from the time! Great early work from Carmen McRae – small combo, jazzy, and a nicely different set than some of her other work of the 50s! Backings are by two groups – one headed by accordionist Mat Mathews, the other by saxophonist Tony Scott – both quartets, and both of them working with a nicely lean sense of swing that seems to bring the same out of Carmen! The album's not as dark or moody as you might expect from these years – and that's a great thing to us, because it illuminates another side of Carmen's talents that don't always get as much exposure. Titles include "Easy To Love", "If I'm Lucky", "Tip Toe Gently", "Old Devil Moon", "Misery", and "Too Much In Love To Care". One of Charles Mingus' excellent albums for the Bethlehem label – recorded during that magical year of 1957, a real turning point in his career! There's a sharpness here to Mingus' musical vision that hadn't shown up in previous years – a refinement of ideas expressed for Savoy and Prestige on previous sessions, drawn with tighter tension, and a bolder sense of spirit and emotion throughout. The group's a well-chosen batch of modernists – with Shafi Hadi on alto and tenor, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Clarence Shaw on trumpet, and the surprising addition of Bill Evans on piano – sounding a fair bit bolder here than elsewhere. Titles are almost all Mingus originals with a great balance of modern structures and freer solo moments – and tracks include "Conversation", "West Coast Ghost", "Fifty First Street Blues", "East Coasting", and the sublime "Celia", which Mingus and Hadi performed in the film Shadows by John Cassavettes. The album's a lot more freewheeling than other Mingus material from the time – although still a bit more compact than the Atlantic or Columbia sides – and the group's staffed with key early interpreters of Charles' vision – including John LaPorta on alto, Teo Macero on tenor and baritone, Thad Jones on trumpet, Clem DeRosa on drums, and Jackson Wiley on cello – an instrument that really helps shade in some of the darker corners of the tunes. Titles include great early originals like "Four Hands", "Minor Intrusion", "Thrice Upon A Theme", and "The Spur Of The Moment" – plus his great take on "Stormy Weather", which is a bit stormier than most! A fantastic album – one of our favorite-ever records from Charles Mingus! The album was recorded in the same breath as his legendary works Tijuana Moods, The Clown, and Pithecanthropus Erectus – and it features the same sort of fire and emotion that made those classics so great. The group alone is amazing – with Horace Parlan on piano, Shafi Hadi on alto and tenor, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and the amazing Clarence (aka Gene) Shaw on trumpet – all getting plenty of room to open up on the album's longer tracks! The work bristles with a sense of imagination and dark energy that Mingus hardly had in his music in later years – and each new tune brings a fresh sense of vision that never fails to astound us! In keeping with the "poetry" title, the album begins with an incredible 12 minute track "Scenes in the City" – which features a long spoken bit written by Langston Hughes about one man's love of jazz and the way that it affects his life in the city – all supported with excellent instrumentation from the group. Other titles are instrumental, and include "Nouroog", "New York Sketchbook", "Slippers", and "Duke's Choice". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Woody N You", "Billie's Bounce", and an alternate take of "Slippers". CD
