✨✧ Chris ClarkSoul Sounds (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Reel Music, 1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great Motown album from Chris Clark – one of the few white singers ever signed to the label, and a great vocalist at that! Chris has a sound that's quite unique – halfway between Motown soul and some of the soul-inspired pop of the time – particularly that of UK singers like Dusty Springfield and some of her generation. There's a proud, bold sound here – all Motown in the backings, and often done with the kind of tightly-stepping grooves that have made some of Chris' singles big ones on the Northern Soul scene over the years. Titles include "I Want To Go Back There Again", "Day By Day Or Never", "From Head To Toe", "Sweeter As The Days Go By", "Do Right Baby Do Right", "Born To Love You Baby", "Love's Gone Bad", and "Whisper You Love Me Boy". CD also features a previously unreleased alternate stereo mix of "Do Right Baby Do Right" – and the overall package is amazing – with a 20 page full-color booklet that includes long notes on Clark's career, vintage photos, and even session details for the album! Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

Francois De RoubaixDaughters Of Darkness (Les Levres Rouges) (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99
One of the spookiest soundtracks ever crafted by one of our favorite film composers of all time! Francois DeRoubaix always had this amazing style to his music – unlike anyone else, especially in the way he could blend together spare acoustic elements and unusual sonic and electronic touches! There's a very intimate feel to the record – almost as if Francois is performing most of the sounds in the studio himself – balancing a guitar line with a keyboard fill, a bowed bass bit with drums, soaring strings with trumpet, and so on – occasionally hitting some funky touches that really keep things interesting – and which makes some of DeRoubaix best work on a par with the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Titles include "The Countess Kiss", "Phantom Organ & Piano", "Pursuit On The Dunes Of Ostend", "Accident & Cymbalum", "Love On The Rails", "Red Lips", "Ballad In Bruges", and "The Dunes Of Ostend Flagellation". Also features two bonus tracks not used in the film – "Dracula 68 Woodstock" and "The Bruges Band". LP, Vinyl record album

The legendary debut LP from Desmond Dekker & The Aces – trailblazing recordings that are masterfully laid the groundwork for the international ska scene, popularizing the rude boy style and paving the way for coming reggae phenomenon that was still years down the road! Desmond Dekker's impeccable voice was always so strongly rooted on earlier soul, both Jamaican and global, and the tight rhythms under it laid down by the appropriately-named Aces is aces indeed. Includes the classic title track, "Rude Boy Train" and "Rudy Got Soul", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Keep A Cool Head", "Mother Long Tongue", "Personal Possession", "Unity" and more. Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". A standout classic from Mikey Dread – a set recorded at the end of the 70s, when influences of reggae and dub were flowing out towards other genres and artists too – a moment that only saw studio giants like Mikey further refining their craft, to set their records apart from the rest! There's definitely some dubby currents here, but most of the focus is on the vocals and toasting of Dread – often delivered over nicely bubbling rhythms with help from Sly & Robbie, plus Augustus Pablo on electric piano, Chinna Smith on guitar, and Ansel Collins on organ. Titles include "King In the Ring", "Voice Of Jah", "Dread Combination", and "Everybody Needs A Proper Education". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yvonne FairBitch Is Black ... CD
Tamla/Reel Music, 1975. Used ... $9.99
Heavy heavy funk from the mighty Yvonne Fair – a 70s bad soul sister that we'd rank right up there with Betty Davis! Yvonne got her start working with James Brown in a sweeter mode, but by the time of this mid 70s debut, she'd hit a really hard-wailing sort of style – one that had the righteous vocal lead of singers like Davis, Maxayn, or a rare few others – and which gets support here from some really full, rich production from Norman Whitfield! Whitfield brings in bits of strings alongside the heavier bass, drums, and keyboards – and makes for a unique mix that almost goes a bit southern soul, while still staying in the hipper styles of 70s Motown – letting Yvonne get a bit personal on a few tear-jerking numbers, and come wailing back with full force on the funkier ones. Titles include the classics "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On" and "It Should Have Been Me" – plus "Let Your Hair Down", "Love Ain't No Toy", "Tell Me Something Good", "It's Bad For Me To See You", "Stay A Little Longer", and "Walk Out The Door If You Wanna". Nice one from top notch producer/rhymer duo of Gensu Dean, one of the finer producers on the ever-strong Mello Music Group label, and MC Wise Intelligent of the legendary Poor Righteous Teachers! After the crackling soul beats & keys w/ spoken word intro, this one hits a gritty groove on the production tip and deft, busy, versatile Wise Intelligent rhyme style that hardly lets up til the end. It's always heartening to us when veteran MCs keep their skills so sharply-honed after decades in the game, and Wise Intelligent has been criminally underrated throughout. Sharp stuff! Jared HallHallways ... CD
Hollistic Music Works, 2017. Used ... $4.99
The debut as a leader from trumpeter Jared Hall – and a set that very firmly announces his talents! Hall's had a recent legacy of work that includes both small group performances and large ensemble activity – and he really manages to bring that all into play here, as the set has this compositional vision that swings nicely between tight groovers and larger ideas – held strong by a quintet that includes Troy Roberts on tenor, Josh Allen on bass, Kyle Swan on drums, and either Martin Bejerano or Tal Cohen on piano. The cover, title, and everything else about the outside appearance of the record is somewhat understated – but musically, the whole thing bursts out nicely and really stays strong all the way through – on titles that include "Wanderer", "Visions & Dreams", "Brother Spiro", "Apehlion", "Tones For Jones", and "Allure". Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.98
Seminal sounds from The Heptones – and a record that really helped the older trio style of Jamaican music find a new home in the 70s roots reggae years! The vocals here are every bit as much in harmony heaven as reggae trios from a few years before – but there's also a tighter, more righteous quality to the music that really makes the record a classic – with stunning lead vocals from Leroy Sibbles, fused tightly with the voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, in this style that's smoothly soulful, but still has a nicely edgey undercurrent too. The record was cut at Harry J's, with production that really steps past earlier Heptones work – and titles include "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Deceivers", "In The Groove", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty", and "Mama Say". An excellent set of messed-up funky soul from Etta James – one of her killer early 70s sides for Chess! The album mixes together bluesy tracks and straight ahead soul – in a hip, bad-walking style that nicely updates Etta's older style for the 70s. The set includes a great funky cut called "Out On The Street Again", which sounds like it should be the theme to some blacksploitation film because it's got these cool strings, and a nice hard groove. Gloria JonesShare My Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Motown/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $14.99
A heavy heavy set from Gloria Jones – a record that features some killer Paul Riser arrangements that are right up there with the deepest Motown work of the early 70s! Jones' groove is always a bit different than most of her contemporaries – not the usual Motown bag, and really far-reaching for the label – heavy funk one minute, more sophisticated the next – and almost pointing the way towards her later association with T Rex, and Gloria's time in the UK. Riser really pushes himself strongly here – backing Gloria with full strings on some tracks, soaring in the trademark upbeat Riser groove – then dropping into heavier rhythms at other points, with complicated elements that make the album a treasure trove of fresh surprises with each new track! Cuts include "Share My Love", "Oh Baby", "Old Love New Love", "Try Love", "So Tired", "Baby Don't Cha Know", and "Why Can't You Be Mine". CD also features a bonus demo version of "I I Were Your Woman" – and comes with a 16 page booklet, filled with notes, album details, photos, and even a short essay by Rolan Bolan – the son of Gloria Jones and Marc Bolan. ✨✧ Kool & The GangLive At PJ's (with bonus track) ... CD
De-Lite/Reel Music, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Kool & The Gang albums ever – a monster live session that almost blows away their studio classics! The groove here is far more freewheeling and complex than some of their singles from the 70s – longer, tripped-out tunes with a definite undercurrent of jazz amidst the funk – loads of wicked horn bits from Ronnie Bell and Dennis Thomas that complicate things up nicely, while still staying soulfully in the groove. There's no vocals at all on the record – which further enforces the Kool Jazz sound of the set – and the album's even harder-hitting than their previous Sex Machine live album, so much so, the PJ's club had to close its doors shortly after the Gang's performance! Titles include the all-time killer sample cut "Duji" – plus "NT", "Ronnie's Groove", "Ricksonata", "Lucky For Me", "Sombrero Sam", and a medley of "Ike's Groove/You've Lost That Lovin Feeling". CD also features a rare bonus cut – "The Penguin" – recorded at the time, but not issued on the original album! Plus, this reissue is even better than the previous one – packaged with a full-color booklet of notes and rare images. CD

RCA/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $9.99
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the slightly less-formed modes of their Warner Brothers years – finding a really badass sort of territory that would serve them well for the rest of the 70s! The shift really pays off – as there's a number of good funky numbers on the album – and some righteous political lyricism in the mix, too – but also some mellower moments that really round things out nicely. The trio riff on a version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", as led into by the cut "Something In The Air" – and other numbers include "Sunshine (Woke Me Up This Morning)", "Mr. Music Man", "Goin' On a Holiday", "Open Up Your Heart", "Let Me See You In The Light", and "Can I Speak to You Before You Go to Hollywood". Laid BackLaid Back (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Brother Music (Denmark), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
The first album from Laid Back – the Danish duo who would soon dominate the world of breakdance with their electro-pop groove! This set has Laid Back sounding maybe a bit more rock at the core, but still with plenty of electronic touches around the edge – maybe a catchier version of DAF in the mid 80s, or a group that's traveling in the same pop territory as Peter Schilling or Nena – right down to their use of English language lyrics in the set! Those lyrics often have a nice accent, though – which also keeps things interesting – on titles that include "Maybe I'm Crazy", "China Girl", "Keep On Moving", "Take Me Home", "Roger", "Night Train Boogie", and "Man From The Moon". CD features a number of bonus tracks from singles – including "Walk On", "New Feeling", and some other mixes too. CD

✨✧ Bettye LavetteTell Me A Lie ... CD
Motown/Reel Music, 1982. Used ... $11.99
A rare set from legendary deep soul diva Betty Lavette – recorded as a one-off for Motown in the early 80s, but done in a deep soul style that has plenty of 70s touches! The feel here is almost in the Malaco mode – southern soul, but with some more sophisticated modern touches – an approach which takes Betty's great vocals and makes them come across with a warm, sensuous glow that's really great. And if you've got any doubts about the date of the record, or the label it's on, shelve them now – because this is a great record with plenty of wonderful mellow soul numbers that display a whole new side of Betty's talents – every bit as great as her earlier work for rootsier labels, and proof that she was always a shining star in the deep soul scene, no matter what the setting! Titles include "I Like It Like That", "Tell Me A Lie", "Right In The Middle", "Either Way We Lose", "Suspicions", and "Before I Knew Your Name". CD

Michel Magne/David GilmourLa Ronde/La Chasse A L'Homme/A Coeur Joie ... CD
Music Box (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $19.99
A trio of mid 60s soundtracks from Michel Magne – all on CD for the first time ever! First up is La Ronde – Roger Vadim film with his young, then-wife Jane Fonda in the lead – given a score that has many playful melodies in an older French style – maybe a bit like the music used in Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, with larger orchestrations working out some sprightly melodic moments with an old school comedic feel! La Chasse A L'Homme is much groovier overall – and features guitar mixed with jazzier instrumentation – maybe a bit like some of the key nouvelle vague soundtracks from a few years before – which is no surprise, given that the movie stars a young Jean-Paul Belmondo! A Coeur Joie is a real surprise – as next to the instrumental moments, it features two English-language vocal tracks sung by a young David Gilmour right before he joined Pink Floyd – the very groovy "Do You Want To Marry Me" and "I Must Tell You Why" – both of which could have been freakbeat classics if they were issued on singles in the UK! Adventure Music, 2012. Used ... $2.99
Fantastic sounds from Monday Michiru – quite possibly her greatest album in years, and one that really draws together all the best elements of her style! The vocals are wonderful – soaring, fluid, and filled with soul – almost more confident than ever – and set to these small group jazz arrangements that still bounce around with lots of contemporary rhythms – yet all played live, almost in a clubjazz mode – which makes for a perfect backdrop for Monday's lyrics! As always, the vibe is righteous, and the spirit is totally uplifting – the kind of amazing music that's held us rapt, watching her career for the past two decades – never disappointed, and always blown away by the rich progression in her music. Monday plays a bit of flute on the record, Ed Motta sings guest vocals on a version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Bridges" – and other titles include "Adventures", "What Is In A Soul", "Map Of The Soul", "What Defines You", "Brasilianos", "Til Morning Comes Again", and "The Elusive Song". A fantastic soul trio, and one who turned out to be a fair bit more classy than some of their club contemporaries in the late 70s – with an ability to change things up in a great way as time moved on, and really keep their groove fresh for the 80s! This set brings together almost every one of the excellent groovers that Odyssey recorded during their years at RCA – many cuts in single versions that got plenty of play back in the day, and which together really show a wonderful transformation in sound over just a few short years. The package is a heck of a deal – 30 tracks at one mighty nice price – and titles include "Native New Yorker (12" disco mix)", "Going Back To My Roots (12" version)", "Inside Out (12" mix)", "Don't Tell Me Tell Her (12" mix)", "Roots Suite", "If You're Lookin For A Way Out", "Use It Up & Wear It Out (7" mix)", "I Got The Melody", "Follow Me", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Hang Together", "Easy Come Easy Go/Hold De Mota Down", "Lucky Star", "It Will Be Alright", and "Every Lovin Sam". Lovely work from Lisa Ono – one of the first singers of the modern age to return to the genius of 60s bossa, and one of the few to keep getting it right over the years! Here, Lisa sings with studio help from Mario Adnet – that great contemporary bossa talent who's got a key ear for updating instrumentation without ever losing the charm of the past – keeping things live, spontaneous, and with just the right current of sadness – but all without ever just aping the styles of the 60s either. Lisa's voice is wonderful – maybe even better here than on her earlier records – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Roda", "Mas Que Nada", "O Cantador", "Lapinha", "Tim Dom Dom", "Sa Marina", "Bossa Na Praia", and "Chove Chuva". Freda PaynePayne & Pleasure ... CD
ABC/Reel Music, 1974. Used ... $13.99
Genius work from Freda Payne – a set recorded after her bigger fame years for Invictus/Hot Wax – but a record that's done with an even deeper feel overall! The album features some key contributions from Lamont Dozier – who wasn't credited on the original record, due to his continuing contract with HDH – and his bold, righteous approach in the studio is definitely felt here – as he gives Freda the same great groove he'd hit on his own ABC albums! As with those, McKinley Jackson handles the arrangements – which work perfectly with the punctuated groove of Dozier's production – and Payne really sparkles in the setting, stretching out with these magnificent vocals that go way beyond what you might expect. The tunes are impeccable – as well-written as those on other Dozier projects of the time – loads of original numbers that include "Didn't I Tell You", "It's Yours To Have", "I Get Carried Away", "Run For Your Life", "Shadows On The Wall", and "Don't Wanna Be Left Out" – plus versions of "A Song For You" and "I Won't Last A Day". RandolphEchoes Of Lonely Eden ... CD
Still Music (Germany), 2010. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A nicely reworked version of Randolph's Lonely Eden record – one that features the whole core album, plus a full bonus CD of new mixes! The core album is an amazing bit of cosmic soul from Paul Randolph – a set that seems to take some of the best energy going down on the Detroit scene in recent years, and focus it together with a new sense of power and intensity! Randolph plays bass and sings on the set – the former in a bumping, funky style that sounds especially nice next to the heavy acoustic drums mixed in alongside the beats – and the latter in a sweetly crackling way that carries some echoes of 70s Motown, but which also pushes forward in a much more righteous direction. The tunes are quite positive and powerful – and there's a really stripped-down feel to most of the set – no overdone production or heavy remixing – just core small combo instrumentation that's often mostly live, and which maintains a really spontaneous, personal feel for the set. Guests include Stephanie McKay and Waajeed – but Randolph's clearly the star of the show, and we're hoping the show's one we'll be getting for many years to come! Titles include "Broken", "Soul Brutha", "Earth 2 God", "GPS", "Lonely Eden", "Leanin", "Valentine", "Believer", and "Eda Mae". Then, the "Echoes" disc brings in mixes that really take Randolph's vision even further – some killer cuts that include "Golden Days (Aaron Jerome mix)", "Earth 2 God (Mike Banks mix)", "Leanin (Deetron mix)", "Lonely Eden (Simbad Slow mix)", "Golden Days (Zed Bias mix)", "Eda Mae (Todd Sines mix)", and "GPS (Recloose mix)". Brilliant music from this Chicago collective – a group who initially turned their talents to resurrecting sounds from the Windy City underground of the postwar years, but who now make their own bold statement of identity! There's a focus here that we really love – an evolution past free jazz modes, into a more defined sense of sound – one that's rich in compositional structure, but which also still lets the players really burn with fires of their own! The core group features great horns from Greg Ward on alto sax and Tim Haldeman on tenor – plus leader Mike Reed on drums and a bit of melodica, and Jason Roebke on bass. Guests include Jeff Parker on guitar, Jeb Bishop on trombone, and David Boykin on tenor – and titles include "VS #1", "It's Enough", "About Us", "Big & Fine", "Flat Companion", "Big Stubby", "Under The Influence Of Lunar Objects", and "Days Fly By (With Ruby)". Mike Reed's People Places & ThingsClean On The Corner ... CD
482 Music, 2012. Used ... $11.99
A great one from Mike Reed and his People Places & Things group – a clear, crisp statement of Chicago modernism at its best – not just modes from Reed's own generation, but from the 50s and 60s as well! Reed's an amazing player on his own – but we especially love the way that he's gone back into Windy City tradition, and found a way to re-introduce a special blend of Chicago jazz – that crucial pre-AACM, post-bop style that would often swing, but have really freewheeling solos too – a mode that really went onto influence American jazz in general once Chicagoans moved onto the New York scene in the 60s. The horns here are key to the approach – really deft work on alto from Greg Ward and tenor from Tim Haldeman – plus some great guest cornet from Josh Berman. Most tracks are piano-less, which allows for even freer reed work – but Craig Taborn guests on piano on two numbers – and the great bass of Jason Roebke holds the set together solidly throughout. Titles include versions of Roscoe Mitchell's "Old" and John Jenkins' "Sharon" – plus the tracks "Warming Down", "The Ephemeral Words Of Ruth", "House Of Three Smiles", and "The Lady Has A Bomb". CD

A cascadingly rhythmic set from drummer Mike Reed – maybe not the kind of record you'd play at any sort of a conventional dance, but definitely an album of forward moving tunes that really take advantage of Reed's dynamic work on the drums! The approach here reminds us a bit of Ornette Coleman on Atlantic Records – and despite the presence of Matthew Shipp on piano on a few tracks, the format is somewhat familiar – almost a harmelodic wrapping of bass, drums, and reeds – from a core quartet that also includes Jason Roebke on bass, Tim Haldeman on tenor, and Greg Ward on alto. The trumpet of Marquis Hill joins the group on three tracks – and titles include "Wonderland", "Jackie's Tune", "A New Kind Of Dance", "Kwela For Taylor", "The Star Crossed Lovers", and "Fear Not Of Man". Casablanca/Reel Music, 1976. Used ... $14.99
A great little album from Jeannie Reynolds – and her lasting contribution to underground soul! Jeannie's vocals are nice and deep – with hints of southern diva phrasing, filtered through some of the tighter soul styles coming out of Chicago and other points north at the time! Detroit talents LJ Reynolds, Tony Hester, and Don Davis produce – save for one song by Michael Henderson – and the big highlight is the slow groover "The Fruit Song", a sly seductive stepper of a track, with rolling congas, sweeping strings, and a very catchy hook from Jeannie. That number runs for about 7 minutes long – and the album also includes a number of nice shorter cuts, like "I've Still Got My Pride", "The Feelin' Ain't There", and "You Want To Get Your Hands On A Woman" – all wonderful numbers that will have you loving Jeannie as one of your favorite new discoveries in 70s soul! Terry Riley's masterpiece, and an enduring classic that never grows old – and which never lapses into the hippy dippyness of some of his other work! The piece features 53 short musical passages, played in an order defined by the players, in minimal repetition, moving in and out of phase synchronicity – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. Jimmy RuffinRuff 'N Ready ... CD
SOUL/Reel Music, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A tremendous little album from Jimmy Ruffin – as "ruff" as the title implies, with a much deeper groove than you might find from other Motown releases at the time! The style here is really wonderful – rich, heartfelt vocals from Jimmy that easily match the best of the Detroit underground of the time – a style that's a bit like Darrell Banks or JJ Barnes, with echoes of the southern sound of the 60s – but produced to perfection with all the best that Motown could muster! Jimmy gets lots of heavy help from Norman Whitfield – who produced about half the tracks on the set, and gives Ruffin a sound that's somewhere between his righteous soul with the Temptations, and the best Motown grooves of his earlier work for the label. Other production is by Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier, William Weatherspoon & James Dean, and Richard Morris – all of whom follow Whitfield's lead nicely – and although the album's got few runaway hits, it's a rock-solid effort throughout – just the kind of album that makes us love the Motown full-length scene even more than the label's singles! Titles include "Lonely Lonely Man Am I", "It's Wonderful (To Be Loved By You)", "Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me", "Everybody Needs Love", "Sad & Lonesome Feeling", "Love Gives Love Takes Away", and "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound". Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s – an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". A damn funky record – way more so than you might expect from the "string" in the title! The group's kind of an answer to the Soulful Strings ensemble headed by Richard Evans for Cadet/Concept in Chicago – and like that group, it mixes up funky rhythms with some sweet large orchestrations – in a style that's almost a precursor of blacksploitation funk to come in the 70s! Paul Riser handles arrangements – very much in the same spirit of Evans – and he picks up a hip Motown groove that bridges sweeping soul and gritty funk – all played to perfection by an ensemble led by Gordon Staples, and featuring players from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra! There's lots of funky nuggets in the set – and titles include excellent originals like "Strung Out", "Toonie", and "Sounds of the Zodiac" – plus "The April Fools", "The Look Of Love", "Get Down", "If Your Love Were Mine", "Someday We'll Be Together", and "From A Heart That's True To Only You". Donna Summer's in the hands of 80s pop superproducers Stock/Aiken/Waterman this time around – and the trio give her music just the kind of catchy, bouncy feel of some of their bigger hits for other artists at the time! The approach is surprisingly strong for Summer, and almost returns her back to the roots of her music in the 70s – as the SAW style often uses upbeat rhythms aimed at the dancefloor, creating sort of an 80s update to Donna's earlier disco modes! The overall style and instrumentation is decidedly more in the spirit of the time, but there's a similar sense of Summer's energy in the lyrics – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", "The Only One", "Sentimental", "Breakaway", "When Love Takes Over You", and "If It Makes You Feel Good". ✨✧ Kim TolliverCome & Get Me I'm Ready ... CD
Chess/Reel Music, 1973. Used ... $8.99
One of the deepest soul records ever issued by Chess Records – and the album wasn't even done in Chicago! The album's the only full effort issued under the name of Kim Tolliver – a singer who'd worked previously for Fantasy as Kimberley Briggs – and it's a sublime effort from Tolliver and husband Fred Briggs, who'd worked together previously on work for Stax by Margie Joseph! The style here is quite unique – a mix of Kim's southern soul-styled vocals with some fuller, richer touches – almost in the same way that Gloria Scott comes across on her classic album with Barry White – but a bit more rough around the edges overall. The production is amazing – with a great sense of space and style – and some key use of echo that really underscores the emotion of the tunes. A good part of the album was recorded in Miami – with echoes of the TK modes of the time – but other recording was also done in Cleveland, which might account for the more unique aspects of the set. Regardless of location, though, the album's a tremendously individual effort – a bold, raw statement from Tolliver – filled with emotion that few of her contemporaries could match, and free of any crossover soul cliches that were really bogging down other artists at the time. Most tracks here are original – as original in conception as the sound of the record – and titles include "The Other Side Of Town", "The Way He Used To", "She Don't Know You Like I Do", "Takin A Woman's Stand", "I'm Losing The Feeling", "Learn To Get Along Without You", and "I Need You/Drop Whatever You're Doing". And the set definitely has Andrew living up to that name – as he blows here with a great trio that includes Donald Waters on piano, Steve Novosel on bass, and Bernard Sweetney on drums – players who really set a groove while White blows these amazing, open lines on alto sax – filled with fire in his tone, and boundless creativity in his solos! Titles include "Bionic Superfly", "Bionic Sax Meets Mr PC", "Bionic Sax Meets Andy's Alto Sax", and "Bionic Giant Steps". LP, Vinyl record album

Andrew WhiteSeven New York Bootlegs ... CD
Andrew's Music, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Rare work from reedman Andrew White – who claims to "bootleg himself" with the release of this album! The CD features material from two different performances recorded in New York during the 80s – both with sidemen who White claims are all now quite famous and "too expensive" to name, and who provide him with strong, soulful backing while he steps out on some of his beautifully-blown solos! White's a tremendous talent on the alto – strongly expressive, very spiritual – always aware of the farther reaches, but always somehow swinging too – a blend that really comes through in the live music here. The set features versions of "Night Dreamer", "Big Nick", "Crescent", and "Pristine" – plus a few shorter tracks – and it comes with copious notes by White, penned at a level that definitely lets you know where he's coming from! Andrew WhiteTheme Fantasia ... CD
Andrew's Music, 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $8.99
Andrew White has always been one of the most enigmatic saxophone players in the world – and one of his most compelling enigmas is his love of repetition – his way of handling the same song in so many different ways, and really unlocking the magic of jazz in the process! Here, White offers up 30 version of his classic "Theme" – a tune he first created in 1963, and which is presented here on recordings from the 70s up through the present, all with White in different modes, on different instruments – a variety of saxes, solo piano, and even some duets between sax and piano – plus larger groups too. Like most of Andrew's self-produced records, the whole thing is pretty incredible – but in a way that's very different than the usual jazz release. CD

Tony WilliamsJoy Of Flying ... CD
Columbia/Reel Music, 1979. Used ... $8.99
A key record in the evolution of Tony Williams as a drummer – and kind of a powerful summation of all the changes he'd made in the 70s – before a return to straighter jazz in the next decade! Williams' drumming here is incredibly fierce at points – almost at a Billy Cobham level – but he also shows the sensitivity to deeper sounds that he first brought into play during the 60s – and manages to mix an ear for fusion modes with some freer elements too – thanks to help from a lineup of players that includes Herbie Hancock and Brian Auger on keyboards, Cecil Taylor on piano, Jan Hammer on Fender Rhodes, Stanley Clarke on bass, Ton Scott on lyricon, and Ronnie Montrose on guitar. Titles include "Tony", "Coming Back Home", "Morgan's Motion", "Eris", "Open Fire", and "Hittin On 6". Great CD reissue – full notes, and a 20 page booklet with the usual Reel Music attention to detail! CD

✨✧ Edna WrightOops! Here I Go Again ... CD
RCA/Reel Music, 1976. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A stunner of a solo set from Edna Wright – once the lead singer for Honey Cone, but almost even better on this smooth soul masterpiece from the 70s! The album's got an immediately recognizeable moment in the leadoff cut "Oops Here I Go" – sampled famously by De La Soul and others – but the whole thing's amazing, a killer bit of warm, modern soul put together by the legendary Greg Perry – who makes the whole thing shine every bit as much as his own great Smokin album of the time! Edna's vocals are wonderful – more mature than before, and really stepping out with a proud, sophisticated sort of groove – almost in territory of Jean Carn or Gloria Scott, particularly the latter on some of the album's more grooving cuts. In addition to "Oops Here I Go", other cuts include "Come On Down", "You Can't See the Forest", "Nothing Comes to a Sleeper", "If The Price Is Right", and "Spend the Nights With Me". Great reissue package, too – with full notes and beautiful remastering! CD

VariousAcid LP ... LP
Hot Mix 5/Still Music, 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $27.99
A killer classic from a time when the Chicago house scene was really taking off – that second generation of underground productions that was tagged with the "acid" term, because of the way they were using older riffs and keyboards to change things up! The Brits got that all wrong, and thought the word was a drug reference – and ended up taking way too much E in the process – but in Chicago, the term meant a new sort of sophistication for house music, and a warmer sound than the first few years too – deeper soul, more interesting keyboard parts, and a door opening to vocals and other elements that would help build a bridge between underground club and a rising tide in the mainstream. There's few records that document that shift as well as this one – a gem on the Hot Mix 5 label, put together by Mickey Oliver, who also had a hand in some of the music too. Titles include "Dream Girl" by Pierre's Fantasy Club, "Can You Feel The Bass" by Phortune, "151" by Armando, "World Turns Around" by Cool McCool, "Jiggerwatts" by Phortune, "The Juice" and "Ecstasy" by Fingers and "Mix Pump Up The Acid" by Mickey Oliver & Ralphie Rosario.
