Orlando Johnson & TranceTurn The Music On ... CD
Zig Zag/Boogie Times (France), 1983. New Copy ... $10.99
A sweet bit of soul from the Italian scene of the early 80s – one that has a sound that's right up there with the best American boogie of the time! The album's got a really solid burning 80s groove approach – heavy on the bass, nice snapping drum beats, and lots of "wheeet" keyboard lines bouncing over the top – setting up a sound that's a lot like the best of the BB&Q generation, all topped off with some sweet falsetto lead vocals! Titles include "Chocolate City", "Fantasize", "Having A Party", "Can't Break Loose", "Somebody Save Me", "On The Losing Side", and "Turn The Music On". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Chocolate City (extended)", "Turn The Music On (Jellybean rmx)", and "Megamix-Medley". CD

Chris JossMusic From Man With A Suitcase ... CD
Pulp Flavor (France), 1999. Used ... $12.99
Ostensibly, this is music from a fab British TV show of the 60s – but we think it's actually newer material, souped up with fake notes to make it look old. (Especially since the Brit show was called Man In A Suitcase.) Who cares though? – As the set's actually a great batch of groovy tunes, with a feeling that's very much in keeping with the best 70s cop show themes. The whole album's instrumental – and the overall feel is very similar to Lalo Schifrin or Henry Mancini's funkiest work for films during the 70s. Occasionally, you might hear an instrumental flourish that will identify the music as new – but mostly, the sound is heavy bass, hard drums, electric keyboards, and lots of wah wah guitar. Titles include "The Suitcase", "Geo's Party", "Frisky Frisco", "The Fly", and "At The Disco". CD

Harrison KennedyHypnotic Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
An amazing solo effort from Harrison Kennedy – a record that's quite different than his work with Chairmen Of The Board, and a set that's easily one of the most compelling albums ever issued on the Invictus Records label! The set's nice and funky at times – the heaviest expression of that early 70s Holland Dozier Holland groove – but there's also moments that have kind of a playful, offbeat mode that's almost folksy soul – hard to peg adequately in words, but touched with these acoustic elements that are quite different than Kennedy's work with the Chairmen. The oddity of the record almost puts it in Rodriguez territory – especially given the raspy charm of Harrison's vocals – and titles include "Night Comes Day Goes", "Gimme A Glass Of Water", "Hypnotic Music", "Closet Queen", and "Up The Organization". Stan KentonInnovations In Modern Music Vol 1 ... LP
Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good ... $3.99
A brilliant collection of work from Stan Kenton – recordings from his Innovations Orchestra, the groundbreaking group from the years 1950 and 1951, which featured players that include Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, and Laurindo Almeida! The work features Kenton in some of his most modern modes – taking the broad range of colors and tones he first started forging in the late 40s, and fusing them onto some modern jazz ideals of the early 50s. The result is some incredible music that still sounds extremely fresh today – tracks that still have a swinging rhythm and jazz-based solos, but which also have a keen ear towards the 20th Century Classical Music of mid century. Titles include Chico O'Farrill's haunting "Cuban Episode", with vocals and conga by Carlos Vidal – plus the haunting "Conflict", with a June Christy wordless vocal, and the titles "Trajectories", "Incident In Jazz", and "Solitaire". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy green label pressing in a green cover. Cover has some splitting and marker.)

Capitol, 1955. Very Good+ ... $2.99
One of the best Kenton LPs ever, and one that really shows the band's beautiful blend of avant garde playing with a swinging jazz sensibility. A 12" LP release of two 10" albums – one showcasing the arranging style of Bill Russo, the other of Bill Holman. Both sides are excellent, and filled with fantastic material played by Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, and other Kenton modernists. If you've ever wondered why the Kenton band was so great, check this one out. Tracks include "A Theme For Four Values", "Blues Before And After", "Bags" and "Hav A Havana". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barney KesselMusic To Listen To Barney Kessel By ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A classic Kessel album for Contemporary – one that features Barney's guitar in a set of slightly larger backings, all arranged by Barney himself! The approach is a bit different from some of Kessel's more stripped-down albums of the time – as Barney works with instrumentation that includes a fair bit of flute and clarinet work by players who include Buddy Collette, Jules Jacob, George Smith, and Ted Nash – all supported by straighter piano, bass, and drum rhythms. The mix of guitar and reeds is quite nice, and makes for a warmly lyrical sound on the set – a sound that Kessel is perfectly suited for – nicely sophisticated without getting too coldly academic. Titles include "Blues For A Playboy", "Cheerful Little Earful", "My Reverie", "Carioca", "Indian Summer", "Fascinating Rhythm", and "I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Craig KupkaCrystals – New Music For Relaxation 2 ... CD
Folkways, 1982. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Beautiful sounds from the overlooked minimalist composer Craig Kupka – a set that features two very different tracks, each issued by Folkways Records – with a presentation that's both far away from the more academic records of the time, and some of the self-released work of the growing New Age underground! Side one features the long "Trombones Of Lithia" – piece that's heavy on the resonant sound of the trombone, but stretched out in this really longform way – nicely meditative, and clearly processed with a bit of electronics, but still with a warmly acoustic core. Side two features "Crystals" – a tune that has more keys, but a mix of 70s analogue and early 80s digital – again given some elements in the background that make the whole thing feel a lot warmer than you might expect, yet still with some of the experimental elements of earlier electronic composition. Francis LaiPop Story – The Best Psychedelic Themes By The Master Of French Film Music ... LP
Play Time (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $32.99
Some of the funkiest, grooviest sounds we've ever heard from Francis Lai – the French film composer who gave the world the soundtracks for Love Story and A Man & A Woman – but who comes across here in a style that's more like some of the best British and Italian sound library material of his generation! Most tracks have a mod, upbeat groove – jerking rhythms, sweet soulful instrumentation, and occasional chorus vocals that round things out with a very cool vibe. We recognize a few of these tracks from some of Lai's ultra-rare soundtracks (some never issued on vinyl at all) – but others are more obscure – and the set features the tracks "Keep It Cool", "Party Music", "Whitechapel", "Las Vegas Circus Ballet", "Saint Tropez", and "Cinq Pour L'Aventure". Also features two cuts with lead vocals – "Seule" sung by Nanette Workman, and "Ballet Du Voyou" sung by Victor Upshaw. LP, Vinyl record album

Gammon/Bar None, Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
A very strange little album – one of those records that was created without any interest in an audience – but which has gone on to become the stuff of legend over time! The set features vocal performances by a group of rural school students recorded in the mid 70s – often performing alongside just a bit of sad-tinged piano or guitar, as they deliver these surprisingly compelling versions of songs from their generation – tunes by David Bowie, Wings, The Beach Boys, and others – in versions that are completely different than the originals. The whole thing's about as strange as you can imagine – and has had a huge amount of attention and followers over the years. Titles include "Band On The Run", "God Only Knows", "Space Oddity", "Venus & Mars", "Wildfire", and "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft". CD

Roulette, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... $6.99
2 albums that were part of one of the strangest musical fads of the 60s – stripping! We've never been actually quite sure what started the fad, but there were a number of relatively successful stripping albums during the early part of the decade – the most famous of which was David Rose's The Stripper, two more of which were these sides by Sonny Lester (later known more famously as the head of Solid State and Groove Merchant, and producer of more than a few funky jazz gems!) The style's exactly what you'd expect – campy and goofy, really very much in the stereotyped mode of the stripper sound. 22 tracks in all, with titles that include "The Unveiling", "Boom Boom", "Calcutta Rag", "Cad Of Bagdad", "Queens Night Out", "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody", "Theme For Gypsy", and "For Strippers Only". Sven LibaekInner Space – The Lost Film Music Of Sven Libaek ... CD
Festival/Trunk (UK), Mid 60s-Early 70s. Used ... $11.99
Incredible work from one of our favorite soundtrack artists ever – Sven Libaek, a Norwegian-born composer who recorded some of his grooviest work on the Australian scene of the 60s and 70s! Sven might have sounded fine in his homeland, but when he got to Oz he really opened up a lot – working with some of the key Australian jazz players of the period, most of whom had borrowed some of the grooviest styles from American, European, and Brazilian records of the time! The package features slices from 4 different soundtracks by Sven – all of them great, and all of them in a sublime mix of jazz, bossa nova, and some of the groovier soundtrack styles of the 60s – played by musicians who include Don Burrows on flute, John Sangster on vibes, and Col Nolan on organ – coming together in sounds that are weird, watery, but always grooving along in a gentle sort of way. Titles include "Music For Eels", "Dark World", and "Sounds Of The Deep" from Inner Space (1974); "Main Theme", "Desert", and "Peaceful Landscape" from Nature Walkabout (1965); "In The Wave", "The Lost City", and "Bush Fire" from To Ride A White Horse (1966); and "Start Growing Up Now" from The Set (1970) in both vocal and instrumental versions! Emily J LordiMeaning Of Soul – Black Music & Resilience Since The 1960s ... Book
Duke University Press, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 25.95
A beautiful treatise on the lasting power of classic soul music – yet a book that also goes way beyond the simple readings and overdone cliches that are often attached to accounts of the music! Instead, author Emily J Lordi looks at not just the source recordings, but also the evolving theories about their role within black culture, and the larger American story – tracing shifts over time, while still focusing on the core contributions of artists like Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Isaac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye! The writing is smart, but never too academic – and Lordi does a great job of tying together the strands of her different arguments throughout. 217 pages, softcover. Book

Taj MahalBrothers/Music Fuh Ya/Evolution ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.99
A trio of Warner Brothers albums from Taj Mahal – all served up as a single collection! First up is Brothers – one of the better records that Taj Mahal cut during in the later 70s – probably because it was a soundtrack, and pushed the groove into some interesting places – with Taj's gruff vocals working over some Caribbean rhythms and modern blues, and more smoothed out moments! The latter moments actually creep near or even cross over the line into kind of a fusiony soul feel, with the tightly thumping electric bass and rolling sax, but Taj keeps the overall vibe as uncommonly diverse as his other records for Columbia. Tracks include "Malcolm's Song", "David & Angela", "Night Rider", "Brother's Doin Time", "Free The Brothers", "Love Theme In The Key Of D", and "Funky Butt". Music Fuh Ya is a sweetly soulful set that has Taj Mahal really trying on some new flavors – yet still keeping things strongly in the bluesy territory of his roots! In addition to the lead vocals and lots of acoustic guitar, the set also features key contributions from Rudy Costa on a range of saxes, plus flute and kalimba too – plus other unusual elements that include steel drums, timbales, and banjo – all of which inflect different moments with freshly playful sounds, and a surprisingly Caribbean vibe at times. Titles include "You Got It", "Sailin", "Truck Driver's Two Step", "Curry", and "The Four Mills Brothers". Evolution is a well-titled set – given that the record really shows an evolution in the style of Taj Mahal! Some cuts are still in an older bluesy mode, but a few others feature some great backings from Leon Pendarvis – who creates this fuller, soaring sort of style that takes off with plenty of power! The approach is a great way to use Taj's vocals in a richer 70s soul setting – and those cuts are balanced by some more stripped-down numbers that include a few that follow in the recent Mahal use of steel drums. Titles include "Sing A Happy Song", "Lowdown Showdown", "Why You Do Me This Way", "Highnite", and "Salsa De Laventille". CD

Blue Thumb/Verve, 1972. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Massively wonderful work from the mighty Hugh Masekela – easily one of his hippest, most soulful sessions ever! This double-length gem really has Hugh letting go – moving way beyond the pop modes of the late 60s, into a long-flowing, open-rolling groove that's played by a spare quintet lineup with plenty of African themes in the rhythms! Players include Larry Willis on acoustic and electric piano and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax – both of whom are wonderful, and really get a chance to sparkle in the session – almost sharing equal space with Masekela in the sound and shape of the record, although Hugh's horn work is pretty darn amazing too. Other players include Eddie Gomez on bass and Mahaya Ntshoko on drums – and the record has the sort of open, righteous feel of a session on Black Jazz or Strata East – a vibe that really blows away most other Chisa Records work of the time. Titles include Willis' classic "Inner Crisis", plus "Blues For Huey", "Part Of A Whole", "Maesha", "The Big Apple", "Minawa", and "Nomali". CD

Cotillion/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99
A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". Capitol/Get On Down, Late 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Very groovy stuff from the Capitol heyday of the late 60s! The record ostensibly gives TV star (from "U.N.C.L.E.") David McCallum a chance to conduct a set of groovy instrumentals – but David Axelrod produced the album, and HB Barnum did some of the arrangements in the same groovy style he used on some of his best Capitol work! The record features a cool Axelrod composition called "The Edge", which is as good as anything from any of his 3 Capitol albums – plus other nice tracks like "Final", "Five O'Clock World", "Call Me", "Batman", and "Far Away Blue". Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes definitely make some kinda music here – a sweet blend of jazzy elements, contemporary soul, and a spacious, spacey vibe that resonates strongly with some of our favorite recent sounds from the west coast! The album's on Blue Note, but it's a bit different than some of the label's recent projects – even those that are more soul-based – as the vibe here is heavy on keyboards, vocals, and guitar from Misch – set up with drums from Dayes, in a style that's funky but mellow – all tripping out nicely, with help from a variety of guests along the way. Titles include "Tidal Wave", "The Real", "Sensational", "I Did It For You", "Julie Mangos", "Kyiv", "Last 100", and "What Kinda Music" – plus "Lift Off", with guest work from Rocco Palladino – and "Nightrider", with guest work from Freddie Gibbs! ✨✧ Thelonious MonkGenius Of Modern Music Vol 2 (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, Early 50s. Used ... $5.99
A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Titles on this second volume include "Four In One", "Ask Me Now", "Criss Cross", "Skippy", "Hornin In", "Sixteen", and "Let's Cool One" – and this new version features a total of 18 tracks with great remastering and some rare alternate takes! RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1968/1972. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of RCA Records gems from Hugo Montenegro – back to back on a single CD! First up is Theme From The Godfather – a sweet 70s update of the moogy groovy that Hugo Montenegro first started crafting in the 60s! The album's got both moog and Arp – the latter of which brings in more of a 70s electric vibe – and there's also some very cool sound effects on the record too, which really ups the ante for the sort of groove that Montenegro was creating! Tunes are all pretty well chosen – making for a super-dope batch of numbers that really gets past the usual – and the set includes an excellent reading of "Me & My Arrow", from Nilson's The Point; 2 versions of Nino Rota tracks from The Godfather; a nice version of Faure's "Pavane", with lots of spirally keyboards; a medley of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Moon River"; and even a few nice originals, like "Quadimodo" and "Stutterology". On 1968's Music From A Fistful Of Dollars, Hugh Montenegro makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! Titles include "The Vice Of Killing", "For A Few Dollars More", "Story Of A Soldier", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", "The Ecstasy Of Gold", "Sixty Seconds To What?", and "March With Hope". CD

A really nice take on the music of New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a record that sets things up in new jazz-based arrangements that open up whole new sides of the songs! You'll know most of the numbers here – especially if you've got any of Toussaint's classic albums or productions in your collection – yet the approach is nicely different, with rich horn shadings that make for a very different vibe – but which still get vocal treatment on most numbers, from singers who include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philip Manuel, and Gerald French. Adonis Rose handles drums with a nice Nola groove, and also directed the whole thing too – and titles include "Working In The Coal Mine", "Southern Nights", "It's Raining", "Zimple Street", "Ruler Of My Heart", "Java", and "Gert Town". New York Rock & Roll EnsembleReflections – Music Composed By Manos Hadjidakis ... LP
Atco, 1970. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Quite possibly the most interesting album ever from the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble – a set done in close collaboration with Greek soundtrack maestro Manos Hadjidakis! The tunes are all penned by Hadjidakis, and they're performed by the group in an ambitious mode that has more than a few echoes of their Balkan heritage – bits of oboe, cello, and guitar used in ways that have a distinctly Greek-sounding flavor – supported by more conventional rock-styled rhythms that still manage to have a quality that's a bit more majestic than just regular small group rocking! Vocals are all in English, penned by members of the band on top of Hadjidakis' compositions – and the album's a great crossroads between 60s psyche and soundtrack genres. Titles include "Dedication", "The Day", "Love Her", "Dance Of The Dogs", "Kemal", "Orpheus", "Noble Dame", and "Better Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Red NorvoMusic To Listen To Red Norvo By ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used ... $9.99
Red Norvo's dragged his vibes out into a field of wildflowers – and while we hate to think what that's done to the sound of his instrument (not to mention his hayfever), we can definitely say that the album's a groovy treat from the decade when Red was turning out some of his finest music ever! The "Music To Listen To" title is a nod towards some of the mood music sets of the time – but that quality is here in title only, as the album's definitely an all-jazz affair – one that expands out the original Norvo trio sound to sextet formation – getting some wonderful sounds from Buddy Collette on flute, Bill Smith on clarinet, Barney Kessell on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – all players who can hit the fresh, modern tones that Norvo's known for, but who also help things swing nicely overall. The flute/clarinet mix is especially sweet – a fluttering, bird-like sort of reed effect – and titles include "Divertimento", "Red Sails", "Poeme", "Rubricity", and "The Red Broom". CD
