✨✧ Roy Acuff & The Smoky Mountain BoysKing Of Country Music – The Complete Foundational Recordings – 1936 to 1951 (9CD & DVD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 30s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy 9CDs & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations. The set also features a bonus DVD, which features the 1940 Grand Ole Opry film – which includes work by Acuff and Uncle Dave Macon. The set even includes a rare 1948 instrumental album by The Smokey Mountain Boys too! CD

✨✧ Nat AdderleyLittle New York Midtown Music ... LP
Galaxy, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked later gem from the great Nat Adderley – one of the first records cut after the passing of his brother Cannonball, and a set that shows that Nat was definitely ready to carry on the groove! Familiar bandmate Victor Feldman's in the combo alongside Nat's cornet – and Vic plays a bit of Fender Rhodes, which brings up the funk on a few key numbers – balanced out with some more intimate passages that include acoustic piano. The great Johnny Griffin brings a lot to the session, with some well-blown tenor solos that stretch out on a few of the album's long tracks – and the rest of the group includes Ron Carter on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Yeehaw Junction", "Whipitup", "Saguaro", and "Sunshine Sammy". LP, Vinyl record album

African Music MachineBlack Water Gold (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Soul Power/P-Vine (Japan), 1972/1974. New Copy ... $22.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Kurt E ArmbrusterBefore Seattle Rocked – A City & Its Music ... Book
University Of Washington, 2011. New Copy ... $5.99 26.95
After the big grunge years, we had a habit of never touching any music book with Seattle in the title – but this one's different, and really does an amazing job of getting at the city's lost musical legacy! The book goes back – way way back – and looks at the musical communities in Seattle right from the start, and all the interesting hybrids that were created during the depression and war years, and which really blossomed at mid-century! There's a surprising amount of jazz in the pages – plus country and other styles too – and the well researched book is also balanced with sections from countless interviews the author did for the project. 374 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Teodross AveryHarlem Stories – The Music Of Thelonious Monk ... CD
WJ3, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
It's not unusual for a saxophonist to serve up a record of music by Thelonious Monk – but the approach here from Teodross Avery is nicely different, in part because his natural sense of warmth really transforms the music and makes it his own! Avery blows both tenor and soprano sax – and while some tunes evoke an older reed relationship to Monk, most of the tracks have these fresh arrangements that are very much in the spirit of Teodross' own compositions – nicely fluid, with maybe some of Monk's angles dampened a bit and delivered by two different groups – one with Anthony Wonsey on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – the other with DD Jackson on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Marvin Bugalu Smith on drums. Titles include "In Walked Bud"," Trinkle Trinkle", "Boo Boo's Birthday", "Evidence", "Teo", "Monk's Dream", and "Ugly Beauty". CD

✨✧ Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

Nicolas Bearde is a singer with equal parts experience in jazz and soul – which makes him a perfect artist to take on the music of Nat King Cole – which he does here in a way that may well be better than any other Cole tribute we've heard, including a recent effort by Gregory Porter! This set's got more of a jazz vibe, and a very open style – classics associated with Nat's years recording for Capitol Records, but swung with a modern small combo style – thanks to arrangements from pianist Josh Nelson, whose talents really shape the set in a great way – as does tenorist Eric Alexander, who appears on a few tracks too – adding a tenor/vocal approach that Nat never used. Kinky, baby! The trashy film version of Caligula was one of Penthouse Magainze's few early forays into filmmaking – and the soundtrack's a strange mixture of disco and orchestral themes. Disc one is a 12" single that features the "Caligula Love Theme" in regular and disco versions – sung by "Lydia" and pretty darn trashy! Disc two features tracks by the Royal Italian Symphonia, mostly classical and orchestral – but with titles like "Orgy On Ship", "Isis Pool", "Caligula's Dance", "Livia/Proculus Wedding", and "Wood Sequence". A compelling new project from Nobody – quite different from his previous work, and very much in tuneful territory – thanks to help from vocalist Niki Randa! The style here is somewhat subtle – well-crafted tunes that shimmer in shadows of soundshapes – almost atmospheric, but with a bit more structure than the usual downtempo pop of this nature – and Niki's vocals are a big part of this, as they help bring form to Nobody's sounds in some really nice ways. The album's got some dark undercurrents that still echo a previous Nobody vibe – and titles include "A New Design", "Eyes Closed", "Sonic What", "All The Shallow Deep", "Circles In Circles", and "Faces". When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the CD's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". ✨✧ Charles BrackeenRhythm X – The Music Of Charles Brackeen (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

An unlikely, but amazing meeting of the avant jazz minds – a classic set that has LA trumpeter Bobby Bradford coming into play with the UK Spontaneous Music Ensemble, led by drummer John Stevens! Bradford's trumpet sounds quite different here than in his better-known work of the time with reedman John Carter – much more outside and forceful, really set loose in the company of Stevens' group – which, in this incarnation, includes Trevor Watts on alto and soprano sax, Bob Norden on trombone, Ron Herman on bass, and Julie Tippetts on guitar and a bit of voice. A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (3CD set) ... CD
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 3CD ... $25.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! CD

LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $14.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

ChaseChase/Ennea/Pure Music ... CD
Epic/Wounded Bird, 1971/1972/1974. Used 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". Pure Music is the third album from the mighty Chase – and proof that the group was still going strong even after their groundbreaking debut! The grooves here are almost tighter than before – a bit more complicated instrumentally, with some of the trumpets backed off a bit, to leave more room for great lines on guitar and keyboards. There's still some vocals on the record, but they seem a bit more on the backburner than before – and titles include "Close Up Tight", "Twinkles", "Weird Song #1", "Run Back To Mama", and "Bochawa". One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. Amazing sounds from Nicolas Collins – an artist who plays the radio in ways that most other folks might play a keyboard or guitar! "Devils Music" is a wonderful experiment from the mid 80s – one in which Collins takes sounds from the radio, then filters them into newly musical modes – reshaping the noise and static into these surprisingly great waves of sound – sometimes bold and rhythmic, other times more gentle and flowing – but always compelling throughout! There's a lot of looping going on in the process, so there's elements of minimalism at play – some phase shifting that really opens up the source sounds a lot more than you'd expect. An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Impulse, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $59.99
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Great stuff throughout – and completely essential! LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The complete Polydor Recordings of Culpeper's Orchard – a Danish group who are every bit as enigmatic as their name! The set begins with their debut – a great record from overlooked Danish group at the start of the 70s – a combo who could easily step between folksy and progressive modes, and who often had a warm sense of harmony in their vocals! Culpepper's Orchard are always very much their own sort of group – but they have a great way of shifting back and forth between key styles of the time – so that the harmonies might rival CSNY, while the acoustic elements might echo the darker corners of the Island Records scene, and more electric moments might link these guys to more of their Scandinavian contemporaries. The production is really top-shelf – clearly a big push on the group by Polydor at the time – and the album's one of those rock-solid European obscurities that really deserves wider recognition. Titles include "Gideon's Trap", "Blue Day's Morning", "Mountain Music", "Teaparty For An Orchard", and "Ode To Resistance". Next is Second Sight – wonderful work from Culpeper's Orchard – a group who equally balance headier elements with softer, more acoustic modes – often using harmonized vocals in a really great way! Unlike American acts of the early 70s, who were shifting from a CSN-inspired sound to soft rock, Culpeper's Orchard really keep things sharp here – mixing in some excellent guitar work to balance the vocals, so that they've got this double-pronged approach, and a more rocking vibe overall! Titles include "Julia", "Keyboard Waltz", "Late Night Woman Blues", Mind Pollution/Weather Report", and "Satisfied Mind". The group continue their strong run on the album Going For A Song – but also add in more acoustic modes, including mandolin and dobro, mixed with some steel guitar – to unlock more rootsy elements in their sound. Titles include "Trying To Find Home", "Good Days", "Alone In Pain", "Sailor", "New Day New Day", "Before It Began", and "Roger & Out". CD set also features the single cut "Steamhouse", and three more tracks from compilations! CD

The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! ✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... CD
Virgin/EG (UK), 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD
