King Sunny Ade's first major label LP, that helped him bring his juju music to the world. The blueprint of juju's laid down hear, with loads of intertwining guitar lines and tallking drums chattering away in a driving but never-too-busy fashion underneath. African Music MachineBlack Water Gold (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Soul Power/P-Vine (Japan), 1972/1974. New Copy ... $22.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Decca, 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of the many releases in the surprisingly successful semi-genre of "jazz meets West Side Story" albums that came out in the late 50s and early 60s. Albam actually does a pretty great job of opening up the jazzy changes in Bernstein's score, and it helps that he's got great ensemble players like Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Nick Travis, Bob Brookmeyer, and Frank Socolow. Titles include "Jet Song", "Cool", "Maria", and "Something's Coming". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Almond Music MachineHollywood Blues ... LP
Deram, 1970. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An excellent album of funky jazz – arranged and conducted by British organ and sax player Johnny Arnold – but also featuring some incredible work from an assortment of west coast soul jazz players that include Charles Kynard, Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, and Vi Redd! As the title kind of implies, the groove's in a swinging soundtrack sort of mode – almost a Lalo Schifrin 60s style, and one that blends together the organ lines with some totally sweet work on vibes, flute, and tenor sax. There's a wonderful Verve-like feel going down here – although in some way, the album's even hipper than anything on Verve from the time! Titles include "Agadir Sunset", "It's The Water", "Hot Rod", "Slipping Easy", and "Funkville U.S.A.". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

Alice BabsMusic With A Jazz Flavour (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Celeste (Japan), 1973. Used ... $24.99
Great stuff by this sublime Swedish jazz singer! Alice Babs has a cool breezy vocal style – one that graced more than a few albums by the time of this 1973 session, including great sets with both American and Swedish backup groups. This one features Alice singing with the orchestra of Nils Lindberg – in a sophisticated jazzy mode that's a bit like some of the styles used by singers like Monica Zetterlund or Sheila Jordan during the early 70s, but perhaps a bit more flowery. The album features her jazz dance version of "Been To Canaan", done with some heavily grooving congas in the mix – plus the tracks "Song For The Dreamer", "Checkered Hat", "Hody", and "A Hundred Years From Today". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Say When" and "Natural Affection". CD

Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". Chet Baker & Bud Shank/Leith StevensTheme Music From The James Dean Story (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1956. Used ... $9.99
Although the initial release of this music was a cheap attempt to cash in on the tragic fame of the late James Dean, this 1956 session was also one of the nicest big band dates to come out of the Pacific Jazz catalog of the 1950s! Chet Baker and Bud Shank are the featured soloists of the set – and the group's conducted by Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, both excellent arrangers with a strong feel for soundtrack-oriented material of this sort. Tommy Sands sings vocals on a version of "Let Me Be Loved", which is the only standard on the set – as the rest of the tracks are originals by the great Leith Stevens. The band's filled with other west coasters that you'll recognize – and titles include "The Movie Star", "Jimmy's Theme", "The Search", "Lost Love", and "Rebel At Work". CD

Warren Baker with Paul Tanner & Andre MonteroMusic For Heavenly Bodies ... LP
Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

Nicolas BeardeI Remember You – The Music Of Nat King Cole ... CD
Right Groove, 2019. Used ... $9.99
Nicolas Bearde is a singer with equal parts experience in jazz and soul – which makes him a perfect artist to take on the music of Nat King Cole – which he does here in a way that may well be better than any other Cole tribute we've heard, including a recent effort by Gregory Porter! This set's got more of a jazz vibe, and a very open style – classics associated with Nat's years recording for Capitol Records, but swung with a modern small combo style – thanks to arrangements from pianist Josh Nelson, whose talents really shape the set in a great way – as does tenorist Eric Alexander, who appears on a few tracks too – adding a tenor/vocal approach that Nat never used. Titles include "Funny", "That Sunday That Summer", "Sweet Lorraine", "Tenderly", "Rules Of The Road", and "I Wish You Love". CD

Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $19.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

Penthouse, 1980. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Kinky, baby! The trashy film version of Caligula was one of Penthouse Magainze's few early forays into filmmaking – and the soundtrack's a strange mixture of disco and orchestral themes. Disc one is a 12" single that features the "Caligula Love Theme" in regular and disco versions – sung by "Lydia" and pretty darn trashy! Disc two features tracks by the Royal Italian Symphonia, mostly classical and orchestral – but with titles like "Orgy On Ship", "Isis Pool", "Caligula's Dance", "Livia/Proculus Wedding", and "Wood Sequence". The cover has some nice images on the inside of the gatefold, but the music is tamer than you might think. LP, Vinyl record album

BitoriLegend Of Funana – The Forbidden Music Of The Cape Verde Islands ... CD
Analog Africa (UK), 1997. Used ... $13.99
An album with a very unusual vibe – one that showcases the Cape Verdean style of funana – a fast-moving groove that features accordion in the lead! That instrument is played here by Bitori – who was 57 years old at the time of the recording, but plays with the deft energy of a much younger musician – with lots of quick turns and sharp notes that come down right on the rhythms, while Bitori and the rest of the group trade lyrics back and forth! The tempo is fast on most tracks – and the music almost feels like a more contemporary extension of the forro style in Brazil – no surprise, as both of the musics have a key place in the working class communities of their nations. Some of the rhythms here are more modern, but there's still an overall rootsy vibe to the whole record – and titles include "Cruz Di Pico", "Cabalo", "Munana", "Didi Di Rez", "Julinh", "Natalia", "Rabelado", and "Bitori Nha Bibinha". A compelling new project from Nobody – quite different from his previous work, and very much in tuneful territory – thanks to help from vocalist Niki Randa! The style here is somewhat subtle – well-crafted tunes that shimmer in shadows of soundshapes – almost atmospheric, but with a bit more structure than the usual downtempo pop of this nature – and Niki's vocals are a big part of this, as they help bring form to Nobody's sounds in some really nice ways. That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the record's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le Relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (3CD set) ... CD
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 3CD ... $25.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! CD

Joanna BroukHearing Music ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 17.98
Beautiful sounds from Joanna Brouk – an artist who was sometimes lost amidst the new age scene of the 80s, but one who's got a much deeper, more intellectual approach overall! True, Brouk's music does have a certain meditative spirit – but she also was a student of Terry Riley and Robert Ashley, and drank deep of the new compositional spirit of the time – especially in the work of Riley, which is often reflected here, but in a more contemplative way than his own recordings. Music sometimes features a core line on flute, opening up and unfolding slowly – and there's also some nice piano, and even a bit of conch shell and Orca sounds too. Double-length set features the usual strong Numero Group level of notes and history – and contains 22 tracks in all, some of which were only ever issued on cassette! CD

George Cables takes on the music of George Gershwin – but in a set that's way more than just the usual batch of songbook standards! Cables has that warm glow that always makes us feel like he's playing electric, even when he's acoustic, as on this session – kind of a fluid glide that's supported here by John Heard on bass and Ralph Penland on drums – although George also plays solo on a few numbers too. Metro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Given that Red was one of the few tuba players in jazz, this album certainly was "The Lowest" – at least in terms of tone, as Red spends a lot of time rumbling around in bottom notes! The style's less clunky than you might think, though, as the setting is late 50s LA – with chamber-type arrangements that match Red's tuba with more breezy players like Buddy Collette, Bill Pitman, Gerald Wilson, Gerald Wiggins, and Billy Bean – who work with Red in a mode that's almost like some of the Chico Hamilton albums on Pacific Jazz, a mixture of jazz and whimsical instrumention with a tightly arranged and haunting feel. Tracks include "Of Thee I Sing", "The Lowest", "Pickin Pluckin Whistlin & Walkin", "Another Blues", "Volume Too", and "Five Four Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $24.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Suzanne CianiMusic For Denali ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from electronic pioneer Suzanne Ciani – and one of the earliest too! The tracks here were composed for a documentary in 1973 – one dealing with skiing in Alaska – and Ciani uses a sublime mix of acoustic piano and Buchla synthesizer for the score – laid out on long tracks that have a really organic, tuneful energy – shifting between mood throughout the course of the record – and highlighting a warmth of piano talent that we never knew about from Suzanne! The blend of electric and acoustic is fantastic – a bit like some of the Brian Eno piano/electronics experiments over the years, and some of the mid 70s work issued on his Obscure Music imprint – although here, done by Ciani a few years before, the whole thing is even more revolutionary. Titles include "Windy Corner", "Fresh Snow", "Denali", "Downhill At Last", "Getting To The Top", "Snow Climbing", and "The Last Rest". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. Zulu/Katalyst, 1968. Used ... $9.99
A brilliant tribute to the late Malcolm X – served up by Chicago's legendary Artistic Heritage Ensemble! The record's got an even farther-reaching sound than the group's self-titled effort – a flowing style that unfolds as their tribute to Malcolm rolls on – starting spare and earthy at first, then picking up a fuller, prouder, much more righteous groove as things really get going! As before, there's plenty of heavy percussion at the bottom of most tracks – topped by complicated horn passages that often verge on the exotic – and which have a tremendously captivating sound. The ensemble's led by the great Phil Cohran, who played with Sun Ra for a bit, and also plays cornet on the record – the rest of the group includes Charles Williams, Don Myrick, Louis Satterfield, Pete Cosey, Henry Gibson, Willie Woods, and Aaron Dodd – a lineup of players who also worked with Sun Ra, The Pharoahs, and Earth Wind & Fire! The LP's a suite of 4 tracks dedicated to Malcolm X, each capturing a period of his life, "Malcolm Little", "Detroit Red", "Malcolm X", and "El Hajj Malik El Shabazz". CD

Cosmic Neighbourhood move into the realm of sound library music with this delightful little record – a 10" album that's filled with short, captivating tunes – mostly melodic, and with electronic components, but delivered in a style that's really organic, and very beautiful! At some level, the music almost feels like a more condensed take on some of the Japanese ambient modes of years past – but with a faster progression of ideas, given the shortness of the tunes. ✨✧ Culpeper's OrchardMountain Music – The Polydor Recordings 1970 to 1973 (Culpeper's Orchard/Second Sight/Going For A Song/bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
The complete Polydor Recordings of Culpeper's Orchard – a Danish group who are every bit as enigmatic as their name! The set begins with their debut – a great record from overlooked Danish group at the start of the 70s – a combo who could easily step between folksy and progressive modes, and who often had a warm sense of harmony in their vocals! Culpepper's Orchard are always very much their own sort of group – but they have a great way of shifting back and forth between key styles of the time – so that the harmonies might rival CSNY, while the acoustic elements might echo the darker corners of the Island Records scene, and more electric moments might link these guys to more of their Scandinavian contemporaries. The production is really top-shelf – clearly a big push on the group by Polydor at the time – and the album's one of those rock-solid European obscurities that really deserves wider recognition. Titles include "Gideon's Trap", "Blue Day's Morning", "Mountain Music", "Teaparty For An Orchard", and "Ode To Resistance". Next is Second Sight – wonderful work from Culpeper's Orchard – a group who equally balance headier elements with softer, more acoustic modes – often using harmonized vocals in a really great way! Unlike American acts of the early 70s, who were shifting from a CSN-inspired sound to soft rock, Culpeper's Orchard really keep things sharp here – mixing in some excellent guitar work to balance the vocals, so that they've got this double-pronged approach, and a more rocking vibe overall! Titles include "Julia", "Keyboard Waltz", "Late Night Woman Blues", Mind Pollution/Weather Report", and "Satisfied Mind". The group continue their strong run on the album Going For A Song – but also add in more acoustic modes, including mandolin and dobro, mixed with some steel guitar – to unlock more rootsy elements in their sound. Titles include "Trying To Find Home", "Good Days", "Alone In Pain", "Sailor", "New Day New Day", "Before It Began", and "Roger & Out". CD set also features the single cut "Steamhouse", and three more tracks from compilations! CD

Music City/BGP (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The great lost Darondo album – amazing Bay Area funky soul from a singular talent – and material that we did not even know existed! It was cut for Ray Dobard's Music City label – purportedly in just a couple of marathon sessions – most of which we've never heard before now, which is mindblowing in and of itself, as we had thought Ubiquity Records mined what little was available of Darondo for their killer Let My People Go compilation. Lo and behold – here's some more, and it's just as incredible! Slinky, stripped down funk and some sweeter soul that's as much influenced by Memphis recordings as it is the Bay Area – but all with Darondo's distinctive, freewheeling gritty baritone and when the mood strikes, piercing falsetto vocals. A total treasure! It has 10 tracks and approximates the album as it should have been issued in 1974 – with "I Don't Understand It", "I'm Gonna Love You", "Didn't I", "Luscious Lady", "Saving My Love", "Gimme Some", "Do You Really Love Me", "Listen To My Song" and more.
