✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... LP
EG, 1974. Near Mint- ... $49.99
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly the best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing, still in the opaque shrink with hype sticker, including the printed inner sleeve!)

One of the classic sessions of Brit free playing by John Steven's ever-changing Spontaneous Music Ensemble. For this recording, the group is a quartet featuring Stevens, Trevor Watts, Ron Herman, and Julie Tippetts (recording here after only just recently shedding her Driscoll name and pop/soul career – and playing guitar, as well as singing.) Tracks include "One, Two, Albert Ayler", "Birds Of A Feather", and "Nothing". LP, Vinyl record album

Manny AlbamManny Albam & His Jazz Greats Play Music From The Broadway Musical West Side Story (Coral) ... LP
Coral, 1958. Very Good ... $3.99
One of the many releases in the surprisingly successful semi-genre of "jazz meets West Side Story" albums that came out in the late 50s and early 60s. Albam actually does a pretty great job of opening up the jazzy changes in Bernstein's score, and it helps that he's got great ensemble players like Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Nick Travis, Bob Brookmeyer, and Frank Socolow. Titles include "Jet Song", "Cool", "Maria", and "Something's Coming". LP, Vinyl record album

Harry ArnoldDancing On Broadway – The Music Of Richard Rodgers ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Swedish leader Harry Arnold tackles the music of Richard Rodgers – taking the tunes into some sweet jazzy big band directions, without as many of the showy flourishes you might expect from the "Broadway" title! Of course, many of the tunes here are older Rodgers material – making them already familiar jazz standards even before Arnold gets his hands on them – but the approach here is nice and lively, with some of the soaring tou ches of Arnold's other work. Players aren't listed, unfortunately – and titles include "This Can't Be Love", "Blue Moon", "Where Or When", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". LP, Vinyl record album

Edward ArtemievStalker/The Mirror – Music From Andre Tarkovsky's Motion Pictures ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1975/1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Sublime soundtrack music from Edward Artemiev – not a big name for film scoring on this side of the Iron Curtain, but a really well-remembered talent for his classic 70s work for the films of Andrey Tarkovsky! Side one of this album features wonderful sounds from the film Stalker – music that begins in a sweet electronic mode, but soon gets darker – a weird space that's somewhere between the German elements of Cluster and Tangerine Dream, and some of the more abstract electronics of the underground academic scene! Yet throughout it all, Artemiev has a very visual approach to his sounds – one that steps out nicely on the one track from the film The Mirror, and an extended tribute to the director too. Titles include "Exodus", "Dedication To Andrey Tarkovsky", "Meditation", "They Go Long", "Stalker", and "Train". LP, Vinyl record album

Anthony BraxtonCreative Orchestra Music 1976 ... LP
Arista, 1976. Very Good- ... $4.99
One of Braxton's first recordings of his work for larger ensembles, and a masterpiece that gives a good example of the kind of early ideas that have informed some of his recent work in the same style. The orchestras vary from track to track, but they all include excellent players like Roscoe Mitchell, George Lewis, Seldon Powell, and Cecil Bridgewater – players who are more than capable of meeting the demands of Braxton's writing, and who can bring a lot of their own to the session. Great stuff, and with a good set of notes. LP, Vinyl record album

Brothers SandoleModern Music From Philadelphia ... LP
Fantasy, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $24.99
Incredible jazz material from one of the least-known and least-appreciated groups working on the east coast during the 50s. Dennis and Adolphe Sandole had an incredible talent for writing – and in the short time they recorded together, they served up some amazing tracks with a wonderful group sound that recalls some of the Mingus Jazz Workshop recordings with John La Porta. This is the rare full-length version of their album for Fantasy, and it includes the tracks "Drums", "Wings Over Persia", "Grenadine", "Boys From Istanbul", "Arabu", "The Tamaret", and "Magic Carpet". Sheree BrownMusic ... LP
Capitol, 1982. Near Mint- ... $7.99
One of the two beautifully sweet albums of soul that the lovely Sheree Brown cut for Capitol in the early 80s. This one has less of a smooth jazzy sound than her first one, but it compensates by adding some tracks in a nice 80s groove mode – pushing the sound a bit further than before. Sheree still sings lead with her fragile Minnie Riperton-esque voice, and she also plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar on the LP – and the LP features guest work by Syreeta, Stevie Wonder, and Patrice Rushen, all a perfect fit for Sheree's lightly jazzy style. Tracks include "On My Way Home", "Feels So Good", "Love Only Knows", "Got To Get Away", and "Happy Music". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music Vol 2 ... LP
ABC, 1962. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
The second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneCosmic Music ... LP
Impulse, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Great stuff throughout – and completely essential! LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie DrennonWould You Dance To My Music ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Eddie was one of the kings of the Latin Hustle – taking the elements of the burgeoning New York salsa scene, and linking them up with the growing dancefloor trends at the end of the 70s. The result is a nice batch of jazzy groovers that have a lot more musical depth than some of the other titles on the Casablanca label at the time – and which occasionally show Eddie's roots in funkier styles. The best example of this is "Come Dance With Me", which starts with a good drumbreak, then rolls into a string-laden groove that's punctuated with some good basslines. Other nice cuts include "That's Just Too Bad", "Save Your Love For Me", "Someday, Someway", and "Never Let Me Go", which also has a bit of a break on the intro. LP, Vinyl record album

DriftersI'll Take You Where The Music's Playing (jukebox EP) ... 7-inch
Atlantic, 1965. Sealed (pic cover)... $29.99
A rock-solid set from the Drifters, maybe their best for Atlantic in the 60s! The album's heavy on those lightly loping tunes that the group virtually invented a few years before – that slightly-sweetened approach to soul that became known as the uptown sound and which still had The Drifters as one of its key proponents at the time of this set. Production is by the great Bert Berns, who really knows how to balance all elements perfectly – and many of the lead vocals are by Johnny Moore, whose crackling vocals bring in a nice sense of feeling, even when the tunes are pretty darn catchy. 6 tracks from the LP: "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing", "I've Got Sand In My Shoes", "Follow Me", "Answer The Phone", "Chains Of Love" and "Far From The Maddening Crowd". 7-inch, Vinyl record

A classic set of world jazz jams from the left edge of the spectrum – featuring the duo of ex-Blue Notes Johnny Dyani and Mongezi Feza, teamed up with European percussionist Okay Temiz! The format is free and open, with strands of South African rhythms from the Blue Notes' roots, plus some more of the avant soloing of Feza's later London years. Temiz is almost a bit more restrained compared to the other players – filling in spaces behind Dyani's bass, piano, and vocals – and letting Feza play some percussion in addition to his usual trumpet work. Titles include "Idyongwana", "Feelings", "Gorans Soder", and "Traditional South African Songs". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... LP
EG, 1978. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good ... $8.99
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". LP, Vinyl record album

Westminster, 1961. Very Good ... $11.99
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Music for lovers – and some languid lovers at that – thanks to some perfect mellow moods set by Jackie Gleason! The set's one of Jackie's undisputed classics for Capitol Records in the 50s – perfect sounds to woo a winsome lass, made slightly sexier by some great trumpet solos by Bobby Hackett – a player whose horn always seemed plenty at home amidst the larger arrangements provided by Gleason. And while Jackie's performances on TV were always pretty dynamic and explosive, his sound on record is something else entirely – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Alone Together", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Some Day", "Body & Soul", "My Love For Carmen", and "Love Is Here To Stay". The set's got all the sadness and melancholy you'd expect from the title – a wonderfully dreamy batch of instrumental tunes that are about as lush as lush can be (and there's us, dropping another reference to Gleason's personal life!) The record's virtually the blueprint for mood music in the mid 50s – and titles include "The Song Is Ended", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Once In A While", "Time On My Hands", "My Ideal", "I Remember You", "It Could Happen To You", "I Can't Get Started" and "I'll Be Seeing You". Warner, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Great work from Earl Hagen – one of TV's better composers, as you'll hear from this tight set of tracks! The core mode of the music is crime jazz, but Hagen also adds in a lot of dramatic flourishes and contemplative passages – and the show's exotic locales (Mexico, Japan, Burma, Hong Kong) makes for some added musical touches that bring a groovy global aspect to the work. And given that Bill Cosby was a key member of the show, you can bet that things sound pretty darn hip! Charisma, 1972. Very Good ... $5.99
A legendary album of instrumental music inspired by the Lord Of The Rings – maybe not the all-out Frodo Fest you might expect, but a set that's been pretty important to fans of JRR Tokien over the years – especially in the years before DVDs and other mass-market versions of his masterpiece! Bo Hansson works here heavy on keyboards, but also uses some nicely spacey guitars – all spun out over tunes that could each work as mini-soundtracks for separate sections of the three volume book – with titles that include "Fog On The Barrow Downs", "Leaving The Shire", "Lothlorien", "Shadowfax", "The Black Riders & Flight To The Ford", and "Dreams In The House Of Healing". Leon HuffHere To Create Music ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1980. Very Good+ ... $2.99
One of the most compelling later albums on Philly International – a killer mix of jazzy numbers that have a very different style than most of the other Philly work at the time! Even though Leon Huff had been banging around in soul music for about 15 years – most famously as half of the Philly soul superteam Gamble & Huff – this 1980 LP was his first effort as an artist, instead of producer. In Chicago, the big highlight is the jazzy stepping track "I Ain't Jivin, I'm Jammin" – which grooves along with a sweet two-step piano sound that's still quite popular on the dancefloor – but the record is filled with nice tracks including "Tight Money", which was done earlier by Reuben Wilson, the funky "Your Body Won't Move If You Can't Feel The Groove", the breezy instrumental "No Greater Love", "Tasty", "This One's For Us" and "Latin Spirit". ✨✧ Barney KesselMusic To Listen To Barney Kessel By ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good ... $14.99
A classic Kessel album for Contemporary – one that features Barney's guitar in a set of slightly larger backings, all arranged by Barney himself! The approach is a bit different from some of Kessel's more stripped-down albums of the time – as Barney works with instrumentation that includes a fair bit of flute and clarinet work by players who include Buddy Collette, Jules Jacob, George Smith, and Ted Nash – all supported by straighter piano, bass, and drum rhythms. The mix of guitar and reeds is quite nice, and makes for a warmly lyrical sound on the set – a sound that Kessel is perfectly suited for – nicely sophisticated without getting too coldly academic. Titles include "Blues For A Playboy", "Cheerful Little Earful", "My Reverie", "Carioca", "Indian Summer", "Fascinating Rhythm", and "I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk takes on "other folks music" – that is, a host of tunes penned by other jazz artists – but as you'd expect, there's a really personal feel to the record overall – one that definitely makes the music Kirk's own by the end of the set! The album's a bit more subdued than some of his previous records, but no less creative – as there's a wonderfully understated quality to the record that really cements its charm – that undeniable Kirk genius at work, amidst an inventive lineup that includes Truty Pitts on electric piano, Hilton Ruiz on acoustic piano, Gloria Agnosti on harp, Richard Williams on trumpet, Roy Haynes on drums – and Roland himself on a great range of reeds – including tenor, flute, manzello, stritchaphone, reed trumpet, and harmonica! Titles include a great reworking of Frank Foster's "Simone", plus versions of Hilton Ruiz' "Arrival" , Trudy Pitts' "Anysha", Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", and Kirk's own "Water For Robeson & Williams". Kool & The GangMusic Is The Message ... LP
De-Lite, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A pivotal album in the career of Kool & The Gang! This album has the band operating at the top of their early 70s funky powers – and it also shows them dabbling a bit with electronics, which would become a big part of their sound a few albums later. The best example of this is the totally cool "Electric Frog (parts 1 & 2)", which has this amazing bubbling moogy riff that goes in and out of the song. Other tracks are more straight-ahead funky – and they're all great! Titles include "Music Is The Message", "Love The Life You Live (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky Granny", and the righteous "Soul Vibrations". Also features the super-dope mellow "Blowin With The Wind", a stripped-down number that's dominated by a trumpet solo, and proof that the group could operate just as well at a mellow level as they could at a hard funky one! Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
A very tripped-out set of meditation music – issued by Verve in the late 60s, and arguably even more spacey and atmospheric than some of Tony Scott's similar records for the label at the time! Malachi is actually John Morgan Newbern – working here in a spare setting to capture the "evening vibrations" of a single night in 1966 – served up through instrumentation that includes low-end percussion, acoustic guitar, and a fair bit of Jew's harp – played by Steve Cunningham (of Red Crayola fame), but drifting out slowly over the longer tracks in the set. The album's an early example of the extremes that 60s labels used to address the growing interest in Eastern ideals at the time – and it's much less commercial than some of the more gimmicky sessions of the decade. Titles include "Wednesday – Second", "Wednesday – Sixth", "Wednesday – Fourth", "Wednesday – Fifth", and "Wednesday – Eighth". LP, Vinyl record album

Pretty compelling stuff from Brit arranger Ray Martin! Sound Of Sight – a record that's exactly what it's titled at – a very visual set of sounds, made up mostly from music, but also featuring some cool sound effects as well – all laid out over original tunes by Martin, which act almost like these mini-movies in sound! The scoring is quite dramatic, and most numbers go for much longer than usual for the average Phase 4 album – and the 1963 date of the record makes for a handful of groovy touches mixed in with the more traditional cinematic styles. Titles include "Hoodunit", "Tearjerker", "Egyptian Epic", "Westorama", "Flagwaver", and "Cartoonik". LP, Vinyl record album

As beathead revivalists have shown, the album would be nothing without that pair, especially Axelrod – and McCallum's really just the figurehead to sell a cool batch of 60s instrumental easy tunes with some odd experimental moments. These include Barnum's eerie "House Of Mirrors" tune and Axelrod's more sedate groovy number "On A Weekend". The group's a quintet, with lots of room for Lou's bold solos in the lead – and other players include Dick Cary on trumpet and piano, Jack Lesberg on bass, George Barnes on guitar, and Don Marino on drums. Barnes provides a nice link between classic and modern styles – and titles include "Runnin wild", "La Cumparasita", "I'm Thru With Love", "Sugar Blues", "Sweet Sue Just You", and "Stairway To The Stars". A great illustration of the genius of Carmen McRae in the 70s – a record that easily shows why Carmen was hipper than most of her contemporaries from two decades before! The set has the vocalist somehow managing to still stick in a straight jazz style, without going for cheaper soul routines – yet also opening up with more of a sense of mature presence that showed the sophistication of the times – a killer blend that really makes the album a gem from these 70s years! The live setting features Carmen working through a mixture of new and old material in some really unique variations – working with a small group that includes Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet and Marshall Otwell on keyboards, carving out some space with a really wonderfully confident feel. Numbers include "No More Blues", "Only Women Bleed", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Star Eyes", "Dindi", "Never Let Me Go", "On A Clear Day", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "I'm Always Drunk In San Francisco". ✨✧ Charles MingusModern Jazz Symposium Of Music & Poetry ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good ... $49.99
A fantastic album – one of our favorite-ever records from Charles Mingus! The album was recorded in the same breath as his legendary works Tijuana Moods, The Clown, and Pithecanthropus Erectus – and it features the same sort of fire and emotion that made those classics so great. The group alone is amazing – with Horace Parlan on piano, Shafi Hadi on alto and tenor, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and the amazing Clarence (aka Gene) Shaw on trumpet – all getting plenty of room to open up on the album's longer tracks! The work bristles with a sense of imagination and dark energy that Mingus hardly had in his music in later years – and each new tune brings a fresh sense of vision that never fails to astound us! In keeping with the "poetry" title, the album begins with an incredible 12 minute track "Scenes in the City" – which features a long spoken bit written by Langston Hughes about one man's love of jazz and the way that it affects his life in the city – all supported with excellent instrumentation from the group. Other titles are instrumental, and include "Nouroog", "New York Sketchbook", "Slippers", and "Duke's Choice". LP, Vinyl record album
