✨✧ Charlie Haden & The Liberation Music OrchestraNot In Our Name ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $6.99
Our favorite side of Charlie Haden – one that we love from classic recordings on Impulse and ECM – and heard for the first time in years on this new album of gentle protestations against the current state of the US! The album features wonderfully evocative arrangements from Carla Bley – who also plays piano on the sessions, and co-leads the group of younger players with Haden. Tunes are a tapestry of themes designed to offer a different vision of America than the one that's currently getting dragged through the mud in a host of foreign relations disasters and poorly-planned military outings – and Haden and Bley draw from a surprising range of sources for the material in the set. Titles include Haden's "Not In Our Name", Bley's "Blue Anthem", Pat Metheney's "This Is Not America", Ornette Coleman's "Skies Of America", and versions of "Amazing Grace", "Adagio", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "America The Beautiful", and "Goin Home". Charlie Haden Liberation Music OrchestraDream Keeper ... CD
DIW/Blue Note, 1990. Used ... $8.99
A lost chapter in the all too short history of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra – an album recorded shortly after the group's better-known album for ECM in the 80s! Like other Liberation Music outings, Carla Bley is a very strong presence on this set – penning original tunes for the album, handling arrangements, and sharing Charlie Haden's love of rhythms and inspirations from Latin and African sources – inspirations that are brought in subtly, and shaped to fit the overall spirit of the group. Players include Tom Harrell, Ken McIntyre, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman, and Ray Anderson – and titles include "Dream Keeper", "Rabo De Nube", "Nkosi Sikelel'I Afrika", and "Sandino". CD

Joe McPhee Po MusicOleo ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1982. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Perhaps the greatest illustration on record of Joe McPhee's inventive Po Music approach – a style of jazz that rivals Ornette Coleman's for sheer inventive conception! Joe's actual description of Po Music in the notes is a bit vague, but the overall execution on the record is quite powerful – jumping off the record with a sense of sound, space, and timing that makes the record one of the best McPhee albums from the Hat Hut years. Joe McPhee plays tenor and pocket cornet, in a quartet that includes Andre Jaume on alto and bass clarinet, Francois Mechali on bass, and Raymond Boni on electric guitar – often used in a rhythmic way that echoes a bit of Ornette's 70s inspiration. The centerpiece of the record is Sonny Rollins' "Oleo", done in 2 different versions – and other tracks include "Pablo", "I Remember Clifford", and "Astral Sprits", his tribute to Albert and Don Ayler. CD adds additional tracks to the record – including "Ann Khale", "When You Hear Music", "After It's Over", "It's Gone In The Air", and "You Can Never Capture It Again". CD

✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... CD
Virgin (UK), 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The fourth album from Roxy Music – and quite possibly their best to date! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". CD
(HDCD remastered pressing. BMG club pressing. Back artwork has a small crease, but is otherwise fine.)

Roxy MusicManifesto ... CD
EG/Reprise, 1979. Used ... $2.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stronger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". CD

Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse, 1970. Used ... $11.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $29.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. Used ... $8.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $16.99
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". CD

Tubby HayesInterlude For Music (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1965. Used ... $28.99
Beautifully-recorded live material from tenor giant Tubby Hayes – a series of performances done for the BBC in 1965, and presented here with superb sound that really gets at the amazing power of Tubby's solos! The album's a bit different than some other 60s live work by Hayes – in that it doesn't feature some of the drawn-out tracks of the Ronnie Scotts or other concert performances – and instead has Tubby blowing with that tight, compact style he was using a few years before on record – but still with a hell of a lot of imagination packed into a very short solo space! The core group features Gordon Beck on piano, Jeff Clyne on bass, and Johnny Butts on drums – and Tubby plays tenor, vibes, and flute – with a different focus on each instrument during the course of the three broadcasts that make up the collection. Titles include "A Taste Of Honey", "Speak Low", "The Song Is You", "Alone Together", "In The Night", "Time After Time", "Detour Ahead", "Who Can I Turn To", and "I Never Know When To Say When". CD

Heavy funk from Shawn Lee – known best in recent years for his stunning production work, but really stepping out here as a funky artist in his own right! Shawn's been sneaking out some killer singles over the past few years, but this set's his first really full funky outing – a blistering array of tracks that pays tribute to the Sound Library sound of DeWolfe, KPM, and other classic labels from the 60s and 70s. Most tracks are short and thematic, with sweet funky elements that include electric sitar, fuzzed-up guitar, echoey percussion, snapping drum breaks, and burning organ and keyboard bits! The whole thing comes across extremely well – very very classic-sounding, without any gimmicks or tricks – just a cold, stone, simple batch of funk tracks, served up with perfect production! Titles include "Sexy Beast", "Bollywood", "Italian Stallion", "King Conga", "Drum Monkey", "Spytown", "El Duce", "Organ Grinder", "Scorpion", "Sammy's Theme", and "Boss Bossa". CD

One of the greatest 50s showcases for the tenor talents of Warne Marsh – a deceptively understated album that captures Warne at his most fluid and creative point! The setting is a quartet – with Ronnie Ball on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Marsh is magnificent throughout, really blowing with a tone that is fresh and filled with modern ideas – yet never overdone, nor too willfully complex to lose the train of the tunes. The approach is almost Konitz-soulful – a wonderful distillation of ideas in the hands of one magical talent – and titles include "Ad Libido", "It's All Right With Me", "Playa Del Ray", "Autumn In New York", and "You Are Too Beautiful". A rare rare landmark from Charles Mingus – music written for the 1965 Monterey festival, but (as the title indicates) not played at the festival! The recording was done later, at UCLA, with a group that includes Charles McPherson, Julius Watkins, Jimmy Owens, Hobart Dotson, and Howard Johnson – and it features a large group of horns, playing in some of Mingus' most sophisticated arrangements of the 60s! There's still a tremendous amount of fire in the work, as you'd guess from titles that include "Don't Let It Happen Here", "Don't Be Afraid The Clown's Afraid Too", "Once Upon A Time There Was A Holding Corporation Called Old America", and "They Trespass On The Land Of The Sacred Sioux". The album was originally only issued on Mingus' own label, available only by mail – and is presented here as a well-done 2CD set complete with some spoken introductions. CD

Thelonious MonkGenius Of Modern Music Vol 1 (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), Early 50s. Used ... $18.99
A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Titles on this first volume include "Round Midnight", "In Walked Bud", "Thelonious", "Well You Needn't", and "Off Minor" – plus three bonus tracks. CD

Pharoah SandersVillage Of The Pharoahs/Wisdom Through Music ... CD
Impulse, 1973. Used ... $11.99
Great Pharoah Sanders albums from '73 – 2 in a single set! Village is an overlooked gem – one that has him breaking the pattern a bit, but in a really great way! The session mixes up more shorter songs than before – still all quite spiritual, but also a bit more focused – in a way that packs an incredible punch, even at more contemplative moments. Players include Sanders regulars – like Norman Connors on drums and Cecil McBee on bass – but also some key newcomers, like Art Webb on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, and Jimmy Hopps on drums – making one of his excellent Impulse appearances for the record. But perhaps even more striking are the vocals on the set – done often by Sedatrius Brown, who sings partially in a Leon Thomas spiritual mode – but also hits notes that are a bit earthier, and which are picked up in added vocalizations by members of the group. Sanders himself plays soprano and tenor sax – and titles include the expanded "Village Of The Pharoahs" suite, plus "Went Like It Came", "Memories Of Lee Morgan", "Myth", and "Mansion Worlds". Wisdom Through Music features soaring spirits and joyous jazz-based expression – another overlooked treasure from Sanders – and proof that his work on Impulse Records just kept on getting better and better! The style here is a bit tighter than some of the previous Impulse albums – no side-long tracks here – but the overall feel is also almost a bit more organic too – with lots of rootsy percussion and earthy sounds in the mix, all emanating from instruments in ways that are quite unique! The core group features Pharoah on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – alongside James Brance on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Norman Connors on drums – plus percussion from the trio of Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. Percussion bits and vocalizations drift in and out of most tracks – giving them a rich sense of color and tone, even when the grooves are a bit more direct! Titles include a shorter take on "Love is Everywhere", plus "The Golden Lamp", "Selflessness", "Wisdom Through Music", and "High Life". CD
