Counterweight (Throttle Elevator Music)Counterweight ... CD
Wide Hive, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
Compelling work from a variation on the Throttle Elevator Music combo – one who, like their predecessors, have a style that's often a bit more than conventional jazz – informed by the different strands of sounds that have come through the Wide Hive label that's been their home! The group features original songs and arrangements from Gregory Howe – who's definitely really opening himself up in recent years – and other group members include Matt Montgomery on piano and bass, and also songs and arrangements – plus Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Mike Ramos on guitar, and Mike Hughes on drums. Jekabson is as strong here as on his own albums as a leader – a rich voice who gives the album a sense of majesty at times, and a sense of direction at others – and titles include "Montecito Sunset", "Hum", "Time Is A Sphere", "Ergot", "Embarcadero Plaza", and "Ellipsis". East New York Ensemble De MusicAt The Helm ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... About December 20, 2019
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem". CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". CD

Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of AfricaPyramids ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Bala Miller's got a great pan-African group here – one that's more from the western side of the scene, despite the pyramids mentioned in their name – with players hailing from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon – all coming together in a mighty righteous style! The music is fairly cerebral – thoughtful tunes that have a layered blend of horns, guitar, keyboards, and sweetly-stepping rhythms – plus occasional organ, kora, goga, and kwarya – all given a stronger focus from the vocals in the lead, which shift between male and female singers, and some backup as well. Titles include "Ikon Allah", "Yo Gboko", "Opportunity Knocks", "Stretch Your Nose", and "All Work No Play". CD

Jon AppletonMusic For Synclavier & Other Digital Systems ... CD
Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Moody electronics from maestro Jon Appleton – a spare set that's quite a bit different from some of his early 70s tape experiments for Flying Dutchman! This Folkways album has Appleton doing some wonderfully weird work on the keys – mostly a synclavier, but also some other early digital systems too – but used in these really textural ways that still sound a lot like early analogue electronics! The tunes have an almost poetic feel – usually building slowly, with an Eno-like approach to sound – and titles include "Mussems Sang", "Zoetrope", "Syntrophia", and "In Deserto". CD

Jon AppletonWorld Music Theater Of Jon Appleton ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Mindblowing music from the mighty Jon Appleton – a cool combination of tape effects, electronics, and studio wizardry – every bit as wonderful as his Syntonic Menagerie album for Flying Dutchman! The sound here is quite similar – a playful pastiche of odd sounds, tones, and other elements – fitted together with a lot more imagination than some of Jon's contemporaries – never too stuffy or academic, and almost with a sensibility that predicts remix work in the decade to come. Two tracks on the set – "Chef D'Oeuvre" and "Times Square Times Ten" – were on the Flying Dutchman album, but all the others appear to be unique – and titles include "Hommage To Orpheus", "Ofa Atu Tonga", "Nevsehir", "Apolliana", "Sones De San Blas", and "CCCP". Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Nicolas BeardeI Remember You – The Music Of Nat King Cole ... CD
Right Groove, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Nicolas Bearde is a singer with equal parts experience in jazz and soul – which makes him a perfect artist to take on the music of Nat King Cole – which he does here in a way that may well be better than any other Cole tribute we've heard, including a recent effort by Gregory Porter! This set's got more of a jazz vibe, and a very open style – classics associated with Nat's years recording for Capitol Records, but swung with a modern small combo style – thanks to arrangements from pianist Josh Nelson, whose talents really shape the set in a great way – as does tenorist Eric Alexander, who appears on a few tracks too – adding a tenor/vocal approach that Nat never used. Titles include "Funny", "That Sunday That Summer", "Sweet Lorraine", "Tenderly", "Rules Of The Road", and "I Wish You Love". CD

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

Brecker BrothersDon't Stop The Music ... CD
One Way, 1977. Used ... $13.99
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! There's more than enough interesting jazz funk numbers on here to keep you happy if you dig a soulful fusion groove, and with Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums, the beats are heavy enough in the right places. Titles include "Tabula Rasa", "Finger Lickin Good", "Funky Sea, Funky Dew", "Squids", "Petals", and "As Long As I've Got Your Love". CD

Folkways, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.98
One of the strangest albums ever from John Cage – but one of the most compelling too – and a record that really gets at the larger person behind his incredible music! The album has a very spare format – and features John Cage reading 90 stories – all short, spoken bits that are woven with Cage's theories on art, music, chance, and existence – backed by music from David Tudor, who plays piano passages from Cage's "Concert For Piano & Orchestra" and tape sections from the classic "Fontana Mix". Cage's voice alone is worth the price of admission – especially on some of the more autobiographical sections! CD

Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". CD

ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. One of the less-remembered acts of the Solar Records west coast soul scene – but a great one too – and a group who step out beautifully on this killer set, thanks to great production help from The Whispers! Collage themselves have a tight, funky approach – heavy on basslines and keyboards, and almost setting the stage for Midnight Star – but they also have a nice sense of soul that The Whispers really bring out, especially on the mellower cuts, which may well be our favorites on the record. Titles include the wonderful slow stepper "Feelings" – a complete transformation of the hit to a slow jam soul classic – plus "Money In Your Pocket", "When You Smile", "Special Occasion", "Do You Like Our Music", and their cover of "Groovin". CD features bonus tracks "Groovin (single version)" and "Money In Your Pocket (single)". CD

Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! CD

One of the darkest field recordings on the Folkways label – a set of Ichicha musicmusic traditionally performed during the wake of a funeral – actually recorded during a funeral! Some of the songs are just Ediigwu, but the others are call and response with a full chorus and the ajigo, or kettle drum and the okanga, a two membrane drum, carried slung over a shoulder – and given the setting of the record, there's a very strong undercurrent of sadness in most of the music – not faked or forced in the studio, but genuinely felt emotion at the event. Tracks include "Alekwu Chants", "Onugbu & Oko", "Journey To Igbira", and more. CD

Brian EnoDiscreet Music (original recording remastered) ... CD
Virgin/Astralwerks, 1975. Used ... $8.99
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! CD

Ethnic Heritage EnsembleBe Known Ancient/Future/Music ... CD
Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". RCA/BMG (France), 1974. Used ... $6.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Jose FelicianoSouled/For My Love Mother Music ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1974. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99 16.99
Overlooked genius from Jose Feliciano – two great albums on a single CD! On Souled, Jose Feliciano really lives up to the title – stepping out strongly with the same style used on his "California Dreamin" hit – a massive blend of strings, soul, and Jose's unique vocal approach! Feliciano came out of the Latin market in the 60s, but by the time of this record he's really a key crossover force in soul – and one that helped establish the brown-eyed variant of the music through his massive work for RCA. The instrumentation is often as groovy as the record – with backing by a small combo that includes Milt Holland on percussion, Ray Brown on bass, and Mike Melvoin on keyboards – plus added arrangements from RCA talents George Tipton and All Capps. Titles include the groovy "Hitchcock Railway", plus "Younger Generation", "Sad Gypsy", "Hi Heel Sneakers", "She's Too Good To Me", and "Sleep Late My Lady Friend". For My Love Mother Music is kind of a mixed bag of sorts from Jose Feliciano, but a nice one too – recorded in the same year as his sublime And The Feelin's Right album, but not as concise as that one – and more of a collection of different modes explored on Feliciano albums over the few previous years. Steve Cropper's working with Jose on production here – and some tracks have a rootsier Memphis-inspired sound, while others pick up a bit more of a warmer LA glow. Feliciano himself is perhaps a bit too "heartfelt" at times – working the lyrics and notes with an earnestness that's fine, but which kind of holds him back a bit, and doesn't let his voice flow along with the tunes in the way that we really like on other records – but the overall style is still pretty great, and Jose's always a lot hipper than most of his contemporaries! Titles include "Blame It On The Sun", "Mother Music", "Shoo-Fly", "I Like What You Give", "Stoney Heart", "For My Love", and "World Without Music". CD

A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". CD

Gritness AcoustronicsMahakali – The Music Of Don Cherry ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A really different take on the music of Don Cherry – but one that we're guessing Don would have really approved of himself! The "acoustronics" in the group's name slightly gives away the vibe – as there's definitely acoustic elements, but also a fair bit of electronics – of the sort that Cherry was embracing more in the mid 80s, as part of his continuing musical journey from jazz, to global realms, to territory that might resonate more with the sound of the streets! There's no trumpet at all on the record, but Vincent Thekal plays tenor and soprano, to hold on to a jazz component – amidst lots of drum machine and keyboard parts from leader Gary Gritness, plus more from Olivier Portal – both musicians who somehow manage to evoke the global currents of earlier Don Cherry music, but in a very different way. Titles include "Mahakali", "Karmapa Chenno", "Universal Mother", "I Walk", "Malkauns", and "Degi Degi". CD

A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". Impulse, 1969. Used ... $5.99
One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the title – "liberation", in that the music is filled with inspiration from South American sources, and has a strongly political feel at times; and "orchestra" because the group here is somewhat large, and filled with a tremendous array of expressive players – including Gato Barbieri on tenor, Dewey Redman on alto and tenor, Don Cherry on cornet and flutes, Michael Mantler on trumpet, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Robert Northern on French horn, Paul Motian and Andrew Cyrille on percussion, Carla Bley on piano, and Perry Robinson on clarinet. Haden leads these disparate talents through a set of tremendously focused music – filled with as many ideas as it is with a sense of humanity and soul – all to brilliantly point the way forward for the new sound of Impulse Records in the years after Coltrane's death! Titles include the classic "Song For Che", plus Ornette's "War Orphans", Carla Bley's "The Interlude", and "Song Of The United Front", by Hans Eisler, and with words by Brecht! CD

Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $4.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A soaring solo moment for Lamont Johnson – the bassist whose work was a big part of the Brainstorm ensemble at their start – and who really makes some great magic here on his own! It's clear from the set that Johnson was one of the more spiritual members of Brainstorm – as the approach here, while still heavy on funk and soul, also has some deeper touches too – core ideas from Johnson that are expanded strongly by arranger Jerry Peters, whose direction of the project stands as one of his best studio moments of the time! The team of Peters and Johnson really come up with a set that pushes past the usual grooves of the time – with some elements that recall the jazzier spiritual elements from folks like Eddie Russ or Lonnie Liston Smith, mixed with more of the focus on the groove that Johnson's bass brought to Brainstorm. There's lots of great guests on the record, too – including Norma Jean Bell on saxes, Renae Williams on vocals, Ronnie Foster on keyboards, Lee Ritenour on guitar, and Randall Jacobs on the mighty cool Roland Space Echoplex guitar. Titles include "Sister Fine", "Hey Girl", "Music Of The Sun", "This Must Be Heaven", and "Yours Truly Discreetly". Kuhn's working here not only on acoustic piano, but also alto sax, gong, antelope horn, and more – and other members of the group include JF Jenny-Clarke on bass and cello, Jacques Thollot on percussion, and Stu Martin on drums and bells! Two 70s albums from overlooked reedman Peter Kuhn – back to back here in a single sweet set! First up is Livin Right – a set that was originally broadcast live on New York radio in 1978, and which really captures the openly creative spirit of the loft jazz generation – as Peter Kuhn plays b-flat and bass clarinet alongside a wonderful group that features two trumpeters – Arthur Williams and Toshinori Kondo, each coming out of a different speaker – plus the great William Parker on bass and Denis Charles on drums! The bass and drums really set the tone here – as they rumble and bristle beautifully, almost like they're setting these little fires – which are then fanned brightly by the clarinet and trumpets – on titles that include "Chi", "Red Tape", and "Manteca Long Gone Axistential". The second CD features a live performance from 1979 – with very freewheeling work by Peter Kuhn on b-flat and bass clarinet, plus some tenor too – really opening up alongside some excellent drums from Dennis Charles. Charles' contributions are great – and very thoughtful – and all tracks are long, with titles that include "Headed Home", "Drum Dharma", "Stigmata", and "Axistential". CD

One of the most meditative albums ever recorded for the Folkways label – two side-long tracks from composer Craig Kupka, each of which has a dream-like, very hypnotic quality! It's a bit hard to say what exactly is going on here in the instrumentation – we definitely hear vibes, or maybe celeste, plus light guitar, percussion, and a touch of piano – but everything has almost a pillowy sort of blend – so that the instrumentation is abstracted from its roots into something completely different – a really thoughtful sonic experience, and one that definitely evokes the "Clouds" in both of its two numbered titles! El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. A beautiful tribute to the too-short career of Swedish trumpeter Anders Garstedt – a musician who never achieved the global fame he deserved, but who really left his mark upon a recent generation of Scandinavian musicians! The meeting of two key modern jazz talents in the late 50s third stream of jazz – heard on material pulled from three different Atlantic albums recorded at the Music Inn during 1956! The core of the set features the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre blowing alongside the Modern Jazz Quartet – in a spacious style that's very much in the spirit of Jimmy's own loosely-crafted groups of the time, and which makes surprisingly gentle use of piano, drums, and vibes next to his own gentle phrasing on clarinet. 2 of the 5 tracks with the MJQ add in Giuffre trio members Jim Hall and Ralph Pena – and titles for all include "A Fugue For Music Inn", "Serenade", "Fun",j "Da Capo", and "Fine". Added to these are 4 more titles that have Giuffre in the shifting company of other all-star players on tunes that take on a more traditional nature overall – longer jamming tracks that feature Rex Stewart, Pee Wee Russell, Teddy Charles, and Herbie Mann on titles that include "Blues In E Flat", "In A Mellotone", "The Quiet Time", and "Body & Soul". The last 3 tracks on the set return us to the Modern Jazz Quartet – working here on their own – on tracks that include "2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West", "Variation No 1 On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Oh Bess Where's My Bess". A pair of RCA Records gems from Hugo Montenegro – back to back on a single CD! First up is Theme From The Godfather – a sweet 70s update of the moogy groovy that Hugo Montenegro first started crafting in the 60s! The album's got both moog and Arp – the latter of which brings in more of a 70s electric vibe – and there's also some very cool sound effects on the record too, which really ups the ante for the sort of groove that Montenegro was creating! Tunes are all pretty well chosen – making for a super-dope batch of numbers that really gets past the usual – and the set includes an excellent reading of "Me & My Arrow", from Nilson's The Point; 2 versions of Nino Rota tracks from The Godfather; a nice version of Faure's "Pavane", with lots of spirally keyboards; a medley of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Moon River"; and even a few nice originals, like "Quadimodo" and "Stutterology". On 1968's Music From A Fistful Of Dollars, Hugh Montenegro makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! Titles include "The Vice Of Killing", "For A Few Dollars More", "Story Of A Soldier", "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", "The Ecstasy Of Gold", "Sixty Seconds To What?", and "March With Hope". CD
