Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 30s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy 9CDs & DVD ... $299.99 399.99
Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations. The set also features a bonus DVD, which features the 1940 Grand Ole Opry film – which includes work by Acuff and Uncle Dave Macon. The set even includes a rare 1948 instrumental album by The Smokey Mountain Boys too! CD

Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey & Ake PerssonMusic Of Quincy Jones – As Played Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, Coleman Hawkins & Lucky Thompson ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1959/1960. Used ... $9.99
Early Quincy Jones jazz tunes – played by a legendary crew of musicians – led in separate spots by Benny Bailey, Nat Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson and Toots Thielemans! The tunes are from the Late 50s/early 60s era when young Quincy was being groomed to be another Duke Ellington (boy, if the world only knew!) The sessions were cut in Sweden with a rotation of Swedish players, plus American Joe Harris on drums on some tracks – and some of the work originally appeared on a Benny Bailey album for Argo, as well as on a Roy Haynes set for Mercury. The material is a batch of mostly clean-toned, bop-learned jazz, with some leisurely paced bluesy arrangements in spots. Tracks include "The Golden Touch", "Jones Beach", "Tiem Midnight Sun Never Sets", "Fallen Feathers", "Sister Sadie", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "That Old Black Magic", "I Remember You" and more. African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". ✨✧ Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". CD

Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Warren Baker with Paul Tanner & Andre MonteroMusic For Heavenly Bodies ... LP
Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Amadou BalakeSenor Eclectico – Burkinabe Dance Music Of The 70s ... CD
Oriki (France), Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A definite eclectic groove here – music that has its roots in Mandingo and Dioula rhythms, but also features a fair bit of American funk and soul touches too – sometimes in the heavy grooves on the bottom, sometimes in the rumbling basslines and guitar parts too! The collection is a wonderful look at the early work of singer Amadou Balake – and it features material from the years before his international fame, when he was rooting around in a variety of wonderful styles. There's a gritty quality to most of the work here – and the collection is one that sits nicely next to some of the rougher-edged Nigeria Special sets on Soundway – offering up a similarly refreshing look at a slice of the African scene of the 70s that too often gets obscured by familiar world music cliches. Balake's vocals are pretty great too – but we'll be honest in saying that it's the rhythms, instrumentation, and production of these tunes that we're really digging the most! CD features 13 tracks that include "Aminata Du The", "Fanta", "Dounia Mokolou", "Djeli Fama", "Kambele-ba", "Warba", "Wayisjelequeyele", "Ligda Remba", "Doro Magni", and "Super Bar Konon Mousso". CD

Gary Bartz NTU TroopHarlem Bush Music – Taifa/Uhuru ... CD
Milestone, 1970/1971. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A landmark set of recordings – both of Gary Bartz's Harlem Bush Music albums, back to back on one CD! After a few years as a modern-tinged soul jazz saxophonist, Bartz broke strongly into the 70s with this pair of sessions – working in a mode that brought together rhythmic percussion, funky bass, and some incredibly righteous vocals from singer Andy Bey! Bey's presence on the record really marks them as a departure for Bartz – as it's the first time that Bartz used vocals on his recordings, in a style that was neither straight jazz, nor sellout soul – but rather a progressive approach that set a whole new tenor for the voice in jazz! Gary plays both soprano and alto sax – blowing in a rhythmic mode that's a perfect match for the chunky rhythms of the tunes – and which seems to often take on the same tone as Andy Bey's unique approach to the lyrics. There's an earthy, organic, almost tribalistic quality to some of the tracks – and titles include "Rise", "People Dance", "Drinking Song", "Taifa", "Parted", "Uhuru Sasa", "Vietcong", "Celestial Blues", and "The Planets". (Note, the CD omits one tune from the albums – "Du (Rain)", from Taifa – due to space limitations.) CD

Razor & Tie, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unique album from pianist Jon Batiste – a set that's straight jazz at some points, a bit Crescent City at others, but always with a feel that's very individual – and one of the freshest new styles we've heard in years! Jon's instrumental tracks are wonderful – full of rich feeling and color that comes not just from his own work on piano and other keyboards, but also from the quintet's instrumentation – which occasionally features tuba used in this unusual bassy-bottom mode – alongside great alto from Eddie Barbash. Some numbers are vocal tracks – with lyrics that are personal, and surprisingly powerful – usually relatively simple, but integrated with the instrumentation at a level that's very different than the usual jazz vocal mode. Titles include "It's Alright", "Lonely Cry In Manhattan", "D Sharp Movement 1", "The Spirit Is With Us", "Express Yourself", "Let God Lead", "San Spirito", and "Naima's Love Song". CD

Nicolas Bearde is a singer with equal parts experience in jazz and soul – which makes him a perfect artist to take on the music of Nat King Cole – which he does here in a way that may well be better than any other Cole tribute we've heard, including a recent effort by Gregory Porter! This set's got more of a jazz vibe, and a very open style – classics associated with Nat's years recording for Capitol Records, but swung with a modern small combo style – thanks to arrangements from pianist Josh Nelson, whose talents really shape the set in a great way – as does tenorist Eric Alexander, who appears on a few tracks too – adding a tenor/vocal approach that Nat never used. Titles include "Funny", "That Sunday That Summer", "Sweet Lorraine", "Tenderly", "Rules Of The Road", and "I Wish You Love". CD

Beaver & KrauseNonesuch Guide To Electronic Music ... LP
Nonesuch, 1968. Near Mint- 2LPs + Book ... $24.99
One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". Comes in a box with a very cool book that explains a lot of different properties of electronic music. Great for sample-heads or for junior knob twiddlers. 2 LPs strong! LP, Vinyl record album

Franco BixioFilm Music Of Franco Bixio (Deserto Di Fuoco/Instantanea Per Un Delitto/Diario Segreto/Il Tuo Piacere E Il Mio) ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
Four rare soundtracks from Italian composer Franco Bixio – appearing here on CD for the first time ever! First up is Deserto Di Fuoco – a score that begins with a dreamy wordless vocal theme, but then quickly moves into tenser moments – a kind of low-end, brooding approach to the music which is occasionally cut with some sweeter strings, yet still in a way that preserves the moody vibe of the other cuts! There's one "momento sexy" in the mix, but most of the tunes stay in this formation – kind of a mix of drama with slight currents of Italian warmth. Instantanea Per Un Delitto is a standout score right from the start – especially since the whole thing begins with a tune titled "I Want To Die" – a vocal number that's followed by a fair bit of other vocal tunes too – rockish numbers that almost feel like they were lifted from some Mike Curb/AIP soundtrack in the US – with titles that include "Back To My Baby", "My Sleeping Lady", "Pro9mise", "A Trip Around The World", and "Woman Pig". The soundtrack Diario Segreto Un Carcere Femminile follows – a mix of shorter tunes and warmer themes – sometimes in a lightly erotic mode, but also balanced with a bit of action too – and nice use of spare guitar and piano to evoke some nicely moody moments. There's a few tunes with fuller woodwinds and strings – a nice touch, and much more sensitive than usual for Bixio! Last up is the score for Il Tuo Piacere E'Il Mio – music that's filled with all sorts of weird touches – from spare recorder or harpsichord lines, to some offbeat churchy vocals – used on short tunes that end up with a pretty spooky vibe overall! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – done in the great quality we've really come to appreciate from the Quartet label. CD

Bobby Bradford with John Stevens & The SpontaneousBobby Bradford With John Stevens & The Spontaneous Music Ensemble – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Nessa, 1971/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 25.99
An unlikely, but amazing meeting of the avant jazz minds – a classic set that has LA trumpeter Bobby Bradford coming into play with the UK Spontaneous Music Ensemble, led by drummer John Stevens! The material was recorded, almost spontaneously, on a holiday trip Bradford made to London in 1971 – but the record's become an enduring classic, thanks to the creative energy of the players involved, and the dynamic quality of the improvisations in the studio! Bradford's trumpet sounds quite different here than in his better-known work of the time with reedman John Carter – much more outside and forceful, really set loose in the company of Stevens' group – which, in this incarnation, includes Trevor Watts on alto and soprano sax, Bob Norden on trombone, Ron Herman on bass, and Julie Tippetts on guitar and a bit of voice. This well-done 2CD package brings together all the material from the original sessions – 8 long titles that include "His Majesty Louis", "Bridget's Mother", "Norway", "Rhythm Piece", "Fragment", "Trane Ride/Ornette-ment/Doo Dee", and "Room 408". A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! There's more than enough interesting jazz funk numbers on here to keep you happy if you dig a soulful fusion groove, and with Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums, the beats are heavy enough in the right places. A great Parisian recording from the legendary Willem Breuker – pulled from the most inventive years of his legendary group of Dutch avant musicians! The set captures the maestro at his best – working with a classic lineup of the Kollektief that includes Leo Cuypers on piano and vocals, Maarten Van Norden on saxes, Boy Raayamkers on trumpet, and some great drum work from Rob Verdurmen – all holding together beautifully with the offbeat mix of modern and traditional elements that Breuker used in his music. The sound of the album is surprisingly strong at times – especially on the straighter tracks, which groove along in a rhythmic mode, then break out for some solos that really go to town – and the whole thing's also handled with a fair degree of wit, as you'd expect from Breuker. Titles include "Condizione Niente", "Summer Music", "Wake Up", and "Parabasis". CD

✨✧ Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (5LP set) ... LP
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 5LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99 17.98
Beautiful sounds from Joanna Brouk – an artist who was sometimes lost amidst the new age scene of the 80s, but one who's got a much deeper, more intellectual approach overall! True, Brouk's music does have a certain meditative spirit – but she also was a student of Terry Riley and Robert Ashley, and drank deep of the new compositional spirit of the time – especially in the work of Riley, which is often reflected here, but in a more contemplative way than his own recordings. Music sometimes features a core line on flute, opening up and unfolding slowly – and there's also some nice piano, and even a bit of conch shell and Orca sounds too. Double-length set features the usual strong Numero Group level of notes and history – and contains 22 tracks in all, some of which were only ever issued on cassette! CD

An incredible record – a real standout in Solomon Burke's career! This set features him working with arrangements that are smooth, mellow, and sexy – very much in the Barry White and Isaac Hayes mode, a style that's a perfect fit for Solomon's voice, which was warm and deep back when White and Hayes were just kids! Gene Page did some of the arrangements with Solomon, and the record's a wonderfully unified session with a mellow 70s soul feel that's just great. The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". Divine reeds, indeed – as the set features a host of rare recordings from Greek clarinet player Tassos Chalkias – recorded here for his own short-lived label! Tassos has a sound that's amazing – rooted in older Greek modes, but filled with the sorts of tones you'd hear from modern jazz musicians on the instrument in the postwar years – qualities that are so unique, they even had Benny Goodman once saying that Chalkias had plenty to teach him! Yet there's a lot more going on here than just clarinet – plenty of amazing percussion, exotic stringed instrumentation, and a number of different singers who show up on some of the vocal tracks. The package is every bit as wonderful as the sounds within – a huge booklet that tells the story of Tassos' life and musical journey – with titles that translate as "Berries & Pears", "The Bride's Dance", "I Lost My Loved One", "Old Willow Tree", "Immigrant's Wish", and "For The Sake Of The Damned Money". Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

An incredible performance from the great Don Cherry – one that's maybe the most perfect summation we've ever heard of his ability to embrace a globe's worth of influences and make them his own! The set was recorded live at a French jazz festival in 1972, and it has a very compelling group known as the New Researches Ensemble – a lineup that includes Nana Vasconcelos on percussion and berimbau, Christer Bothen on ngoni and piano, Dodou Gouirand on soprano and alto, and Moki Cherry on tanpura – all working in a larger stage setting designed by Moki, with puppet theater as well! The most striking thing might well be the vocals – much more prominent here than on other Cherry recordings, and very soulful as well – blended with jazz expressions and global instrumentation, with a vibe that's almost like some of the best work on the Saravah label during the period. The whole thing's fantastic – a great lost chapter of a musician whose well never seems to run dry – with titles that include "Resa", "Butterfly Friend", "Elixir", "Amazwe", "Witchi Tai To", "Ganesh", "North Brazilian Ceremonial Hymn", and "Dha Dhin Na Dha Tin Na". Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $9.99 19.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. A deep soul set from Bennie Conn – one recorded in the early 80s, but done in a burning southern soul mode as a real tribute to Otis Redding and Sam Cooke! Yet despite that tribute aspect, the tunes here are all original numbers – a fact that makes the album a heck of a lot fresher than other albums of this nature! The album was recorded in LA, but with a sound that decidedly points to the east – and the style here is a slightly more modern updating of older Memphis modes from the 60s. Conn's tunes are all quite nice – almost oddly familiar in a way – and titles include "I Don't", "The Rain", "You Gave Me Love", "Tell Me You Love Me", "Baby Please", "I'm Gonna Leave", "Steal Away", and "I Wanna Be Your Forever". There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. A record that will certainly make you say "zounds" – given that it's an early date from keyboard legend Wolfgang Dauner, and one of his few in an acoustic trio mode! Yet the set's still got all the amazing energy that Dauner always brought to his records – even in a more familiar setting – and the group features Roland Wittich on drums and Eberhard Weber working on electric bass – the latter of whom uses his instrument for these cool little kicks and grooves at all the right points! Dauner rolls and swings beautifully with Wittich's clapping trap on some cuts – and the trio expands and reigns in the groove at the drop of a dime, with rolling stretches that pull you in from the first note, and don't let you go until the last. There are some slightly out stretches, but they always stretch within a tight, established groove – and titles include "Leak Tick","The Thing We Did Last Summer", "Here Comes De Honeymoon", "Blue Light", and "Golden Green". Fantastic work from an overlooked poet – one who takes up music as her subject matter throughout this collection of work – with individual pieces on Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, the Bad Brains, Thelonious Monk, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and other key figures in music from the farther side of the spectrum! The poems are wonderful – personal and immediate, and often not nearly as heady as some of the subject matter – which almost makes Davis' writing a great bridge to understanding, especially as the work is often delivered with this sense of immediate observation that historicizes moments of creativity, both hers and the artists within. It's a bit hard to describe the strength of this book in words, but the power leaps from the page right away – given some brief commentary in additional text from Tobi Haslett and Jessica Hagedorn. EnchantmentSoft Lights Sweet Music (with bonus track) ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1980. Used ... $9.99
The only RCA album from Enchantment – and a great little set that has the group stretching out from their earlier records on United Artists! The groove here is still awash in the great harmonies we've always loved from the group – and production is by Don Davis, who always has a great ear for preserving the core soul of any act like this – while also helping them focus their sound as well! The mix is quite similar to excellent work Don did with the Dramatics at the end of the 70s – and Enchantment really benefit with a similar ear for a bouncy groove, and that great Davis way of knowing just the right point when to slow things down on an album, too. Titles include "Settin It Out", "I Believe In You", "Moment Of Weakness", "You & Me", "I Can't Be The One", "Soft Lights Sweet Music", and "I Can't Fake It". CD features a bonus 12" mix of "Settin It Out". CD

✨✧ Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports ... CD
Virgin/EG (UK), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! Tal FarlowTal Farlow Plays The Music Of Harold Arlen ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the last albums that guitarist Tal Farlow cut for Verve Records – and a beautiful little session that has the dark-tinged tunes of Harold Arlen providing a perfect backdrop for his talents! Tal's a master of tone and timing throughout – and he works with a few different groups on the set – all of which feature Dick Hyman on piano, and tenor and flute from Frank Wess – with other help from Benny Powell on trombone and Charlie Fowlkes on baritone on a few titles too. Titles include great instrumental readings of Harold Arlen classics – including "Blues In The Night", "For Every Man There's A Woman", "Petticoat High", "Lessons In Love", and "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea". One of the greatest funk albums ever! The whole album is filled to the brim with loads of great hard funk cuts, with cool crowd noises and a non-stop groove all the way through. Monster cuts, including "Nija Walk", "Fatbackin", "Soul March", "Soul Man", "Kiba", "Clap Your Hands", and lots more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fela & Roy AyersMusic Of Many Colors ... LP
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy FlanaganLet's – Play The Music Of Thad Jones ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... $13.99
A great pairing of lyrical jazz talents – the piano of Tommy Flanagan and the compositions of Thad Jones – working together here perfectly, at a level that reminds us how great Thad's music can be in a more intimate mode! Tommy's got that amazing command of the keyboard here that's always made his best records so great – an effortless ability to blend full-on lines with more subtle understanding of the true tonal possibilities of the instrument – balanced with the work of Jesper Lundgaard on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – both players who really share Flangan's sensitive approach. Titles include "To You", "Bird Song", "Let's", "Mean What You Say", "Elusive", "Zec", "Quietude", and "Three In One". CD

Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD
