Lionel Hampton —
Hamp's Big Band ... LP AudioFidelity, 1959/1960. Near Mint- ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very groovy work from Lionel Hampton – a late 50s return to big band work, after a fair bit of small combo sessions for Verve! The album's got an upbeat feel that's partially in the Hampton mode of years back, but often more towards a 60s sort of vibe – romping with some rockish inspirations in the rhythms, and almost pointing the way towards a modder, groovier sound overall. The band is large, and features Donald Byrd and Cat Anderson on trumpets, Lou Blackburn and Wade Marcus on trombones, Eddie Pazant on alto, Wade Legge on piano, and Charlie Persip on drums – proving again that mid century rule that all great players had to play for a spell in Hampton's group! Hampton vocalizes a bit, and titles include "Kidney Stew", "Hamp's Mambo", "Night Train", "Elain & Daffy", "Big Brass", and "Hey Baby Re Bob". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later black label stereo pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

Lew Tabackin & Shelley Manne —
Trackin' ... LP Direct Cutting (Japan), 1976. Near Mint- ...
$14.99
One of the Direct Cutting audiophile recordings made during the 70's, pressed up on Japanese vinyl, and pressed so that it needs to be played at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity. Apart from that geeky sort of information, though, the set's a nice quartet session featuring Lew Tabackin on tenor and flute, Toshiko Akioshi on piano, Bob Daugherty on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. The set's a rare opportunity to hear Tabackin and Akioshi from the time without their big band, and the group plays nicely on 4 extended tracks. The best of these is a Tabackin original called "Trackin", but there's also a nice rendering of "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the insert. Cover has light wear and a cutout hole.)
