Roger PowellCosmic Furnace ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A very nice spacey album of stoner electronics! The general feel is similar to early Tangerine Dream – with lots of bubbling passages going on and on and on – but Powell churns it up nicely at times, and gets a groove that's almost a bit funky at times. Titles include "Ictus", "Furneau Cosmique", "Hermetic Enigma", and "Tensegrity". Instruments include the Arp 2600 and the Arp Odysseys. LP, Vinyl record album

Don PullenMontreux Concert ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1978. Used ... $18.99
One of Don Pullen's best-known albums, and for good reason too – a well-recorded document of a Montreux performance that helped put Don's piano talents in the spotlight for the rest of the 70s! The record's got a sense of freedom that's quite unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – as each side features one long track, played at a level that's very spontaneous, and often quite outside – at least at some points. Side one features an extended version of Muhal Richard Abrams' "Richard's Tune", done with a trio that features electric bass by Jeff Berlin and drums by Steve Jordan – and side two features the even more beautiful Pullen original, "Dialogue Between Malcolm & Betty" – which adds in some great Latin percussion to the trio! Quartette Tres BienBully! ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good- ... $6.99
The only Atlantic Records session from the Quartette Tres Bien – and a set that's got a bit more punch than some of their records for Decca! The groove here still features the compelling percussion/piano lineup of the combo – with Percy James on bongo and conga, Albert St James on drums, and Jeter Thompson on piano – and the playing has a strong focus on the piano work by Thompson, with a good mix of soul jazz and lyrical styles! Includes the original track "Bully", plus versions of "Work Song", "Caravan", "Three O'Clock In The Morning", and "I Never Knew". LP, Vinyl record album

RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". Pat RebillotFree Fall ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
A really great little album from keyboardist Pat Rebillot – a player you might know from other 70s records with Herbie Mann, and a few other jazz artists – stepping out here as one of his few times as a leader! Pat really makes great use of the space to show off his own thing – soaring to the skies on keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, mellotron, Yamaha grand, and plenty of synthesizers – the last of which are used to bring in some cool cosmic touches – a bit like Pat Gleeson was doing around the same time! Herbie Mann produced, and the album's got a spacious sound that makes for some real CTI-like moments – with a group that features Tony Levin on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, and Sam Brown on guitar. Titles include "Free Fall", "The Naked Truth", "Monday's Something", "Beautiful Bend Ahead", and "In A Melancholy Funk". CD

Otis ReddingDictionary Of Soul - Complete & Unbelievable ... CD
Volt/Atlantic, 1964. Used ... $5.99
An album with a very fitting title – as the whole set is practically a dictionary of soul music, for anyone who needs an understanding of the genre! The cover alone tells you that the set is something special – and the sounds within are even better – classic Otis Redding on Stax Records, at a time when he'd already gotten his initial groove going, and was really pushing into that later, more sophisticated style that had him crossing boundaries and opening up the music for a whole new generation! Key proof of this is his remake of "Try A Little Tenderness" – a standard that had been knocking around for years, but which is exploded with a whole new emotion in Otis' version – as are tunes like "Day Tripper" and "Tennessee Waltz", with results that are maybe not as completely sublime – but which still illustrate the way that Redding was reaching way beyond the indie soul scene with his appeal. But even better are the cuts intrinsic to the album – beautiful originals that include "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)", "My Lover's Prayer", "Ton Of Joy", "I'm Sick Y'All", and "She Put The Hurt On Me" – which really demonstrate Redding's growing strengths as a songwriter. Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
The drums are certainly unlimited here – and the album's a really unique one, in that it shows Max Roach in 2 different settings – one with a group, and one that's simply solo! One batch of tracks has Max in the company of a tight group of soul jazz players like Freddie Hubbard, Roland Alexander, James Spaulding, and Ronnie Matthews. The group is very tight, and they've got hard wailing sound similar to a Blue Note group, but with a bit more of a soul jazz feel. They play on two long tracks – "Nommo" and "In the Red". The rest of the tracks – "Drums Unlimited", "The Drum Also Waltzes", and "For Big Sid" – feature Max playing solo, which is a rare treat for a recording of this vintage. The tracks are great, with a very musical groove, and lively playing by Max that never gets too self indulgent. LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1983. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Nile Rodgers is working here away from Chic – but his sound here is definitely in that classic lean, mean mode – lots of compressed guitar bits riffing over the rhythms, every bit as catchy and captivating as ever! The grooves break out nicely from the standard Chic mode – almost as if Nile is set free to explore new territory on his own – and although the lyrics on the set aren't the greatest you might find in soul music from the time, they're more than made up for by the album's catchy beats and guitar! Titles include "Beet", "Get Her Crazy", "Yum Yum", "Rock Bottom", and "Most Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Shorty Rogers & Andre Previn with Betty BennettIn Collaboration – Featuring The Giants & Betty Bennett (Collaboration/Nobody Else But Me) ... CD
RCA/Atlantic/Jazz City (Spain), 1954/1955. Used ... $9.99
2 rare mid 50s collaborations between pianist Andre Previn and trupeter Shorty Rogers – back to back on one CD! The first half of the CD is an instrumental collaboration between the pair – one that's mostly set up in the mode of Rogers style of the time with his Giants group – but which also really sparkles tremendously with the addition of Previn's brightly-colored piano lines! We'd honestly never thought that highly of Andre's work until hearing this set – and his presence here really adds a new dimension to the Shorty Rogers groove of the 50s – a set of tones that spring out wonderfully, and really illuminate the set! Other players include Bud Shank, Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bob Cooper – on 13 titles that include "It's Delovely", "Heat Wave", "40 Below", "Claudia", "General Cluster", "Everything I've Got", "Call For Cole", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Next up is a 1955 vocal album by singer Betty Bennett – recorded for Atlantic, and featuring arrangements and instrumentation by both Rogers and Previn! Betty's got a nice icy west coast cool style of singing – a bit like Chris Connor or June Christy – and players in the group include Harry Klee, Frank Rosolino, Bob Cooper, and Jimmy Giuffre. The tracks are an interesting batch of slighly-exotic numbers, some from shows, and titles include "Sidewalks Of Cuba", "Island In The West Indies", "Tomorrow Mountain", and "Treat Me Rough". CD

Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer" – the last 4 of which were written by Bloomfield and Gravenites. Funky Latin from Mongo! "Can't Get Next To You" has the best groove, with some nice choppy horn parts, and heavy conga playing by Mongo – really snapping the groove from the outset, even better than the original! ✨✧ Mongo SantamariaMongo At Montreux ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mongo cooks mightily – working here at the Montreux Jazz Fest in 1971, with a soaring group that's even more spiritual than any of his records in the 60s! There's definitely a dose of Latin Soul in the mix, but there's a fiercer, more righteous quality to the album too – thanks to the presence of players like Carter Jefferson on tenor and flute, Roger Glenn on vlute and vibes, and Ray Maldonando on trumpet – soloists who really know how to soar at the right moments. The percussion's a bit more rootsy too – showing Santamaria's concern with classic Afro-Cuban sounds at the time – and alongside Mongo's congas, you'll also hear percussion from Steve Berrios and Armando Pereza. Marty Sheller handles the arrangements – and titles include "Come Candela", "Climax", "Disappear", "Marty's Tune", "I Wanna Know", and "Cloud Nine". LP, Vinyl record album

Jill Scott's first album away from Hidden Beach – and a set that really marks a tremendous comeback for the singer! Jill sounds better here than we remember in years – as sharply focused and musically pointed as on her tremendous debut from the start of the century – with energy that's apparent from the very first note – both in Scott's vocals and the overall construction of the tunes! All the older, funkier elements from hip hop are in the mix – but as on her debut, they never overwhelm her vocals – and instead seem to empower the singer to be as bold, as righteous as she can possibly be – really winning us all over again with her music. Titles include "Fool's Gold", "Back Together", "Run Run Run", "Wild Cookie", "Prepared", "Lighthouse", "Coming To You", "Beautiful Love", and "Jahraymecofasola". CD

Other players include Harvey Mason on drums, Ernie Watts on tenor and alto, Victor Feldman on keyboards, and Paul Jackson on guitar – and titles include "Burundi Bump", "The Biggest Part Of Me", "He's Too Young", "Aerobia", "Target", and "Come Back To Me". Sweet pop soul from the lovely Shannon – a record that's not nearly as well-remembered as her debut, thanks to the lack of a title hit – but which still follows very strongly in its shoes! As before, there's plenty of blasting beats at the bottom of the mix here – not ones to hit you over the head, but still served up in that burst of sound that was the mainstream take on the Art Of Noise sound from a few years before. Shannon's vocals are bold enough to work well with this approach – and while the overall style isn't totally Trevor Horn at its best, it is a great illustration of his legacy on 80s grooves – served up by one of its more dynamic divas! The Silent Poets' excellent To Come album is remixed and repackaged for the US market. Typical stuff, as some of the tracks are given a bit more of a kick to make them crossover to the American market – clear proof that the folks at Warner think that US listeners aren't hip enough to understand the subtle complexity of this fantastic Japanese group. Still, the remixes aren't that over the top – and most of them still retain the flavor of the original tracks. In case you're not hip, the Percy Sledge Way is a deeply soulful one – rooted in the best 60s southern soul traditions, and carried off to perfection on this near-lost Atlantic set! The album's better even than Percy's debut for the label – recorded by Quin Ivy at his legendary Quinvy studios – with session players that include Muscle Shoals legends Spooner Oldham, Roger Hawkins, and Jimmy Johnson. A rare return to recording for alto player Buster Smith – captured here in a setting that's even sharper than before! Smith has roots that go back to the 30s bands of Bennie Moten and Andy Kirk – but he also was an early boss of Charlie Parker, who claimed to be strongly influenced by his alto – and you can definitely hear Buster take off in a few Bird-like flights during the set! The groove is mostly older swing-based jazz, yet there's a sharper edge too – and certainly an understanding of bop that informs the solos. A landmark album from The Spinners – one that has the Detroit vocal group making a hip trip to the Philly scene – picking up a whole new sound and rich new energy in the process! A few years later, working in Philly studios would be common for many artists – but this self-titled Spinners set really helped launch the trend – and for good reason, too – given the strength of the production and arrangements from the legendary Thom Bell! Bell's at his best here – helping the group reach whole new territory in their wonderful harmonies – and backing them up with some of the best musicians the Sigma Sound Studios had to offer. The album's overflowing with hits – like "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" and "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" – but it's also got some excellent lesser-known material too, like the extended "I Could Never (Repay Your Love)" and "We Belong Together". Donna Summer's in the hands of 80s pop superproducers Stock/Aiken/Waterman this time around – and the trio give her music just the kind of catchy, bouncy feel of some of their bigger hits for other artists at the time! The approach is surprisingly strong for Summer, and almost returns her back to the roots of her music in the 70s – as the SAW style often uses upbeat rhythms aimed at the dancefloor, creating sort of an 80s update to Donna's earlier disco modes! The overall style and instrumentation is decidedly more in the spirit of the time, but there's a similar sense of Summer's energy in the lyrics – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", "The Only One", "Sentimental", "Breakaway", "When Love Takes Over You", and "If It Makes You Feel Good". Atlantic/Driven By The Music (UK), 1988. New Copy ... $19.99 50.99
Special reissue features the great book-style cover and notes of the others in this series – plus 2 more CDs with a whopping 27 more tracks – all mixes from a variety of singles, by Pete Hammond, Clivilles & Cole, Dave Ford, and others. The whole thing is in a cool book-style cover – with a large set of new liner notes in the booklet – and the set includes 6 unreleased mixes – "Whatever Your Heart Desires (ext club mix)", "If It Makes You Feel Good (Dave Ford album master)", "Sentimental (album long master)", "Love's About To Change My Heart (7" long rmx)", "If It Makes You Feel Good (ext feelgood mix)", and "Love's About To Change My Heart (12" rmx)". ✨✧ Donna SummerMistaken Identity ... CD
Atlantic, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Donna Summer's got blonde hair on the cover this time around, so the album might lead to a case of mistaken identity – but the lady's vocals are still very much on par, and set up here in a whole new set of grooves! The style's nicely contemporary, compared to Summer's previous few records – almost a bit of new jack in the mix, with bursting beats that really reflect the changes in soul music in the early 90s – including, maybe, a few warmer moments that have a glow that really helps Donna's vocals too. Keith Diamond arranged and produced – and you can hear echoes of elements that newer artists like Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield were using – on titles that include "When Love Cries", "Work That Magic", "Body Talk", "Friends Unknown", "Cry Of A Waking Heart", "What Is It You Want", and "Let There Be Peace". Sweet InspirationsSweets For My Sweet ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Wonderful soul by one of the best female groups of the 60s! The Sweet Inspirations work here in a southern-tinged style similar to their classic backing work for Aretha Franklin – a sound that was already great behind Aretha, but which is even better here on its own – warm, spiritual, and brimming with soul – at a level that few other girl groups could ever take this deep! Arif Mardin did the arrangements, and brings in just the sort of warm, mature touches to push the music into the sublime – territory that had hardly been explored in this way before – at least not in the secular world – but which would go onto influence a generation. Backing is by a small group with Eddie Hinton on guitar, Barry Beckett on organ, and Roger Hawkins on drums – and titles include "But You Know I Love You", "Don't Go", "Always David", "Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday", "Chained", and "Crying in the Rain". Billy TaylorBilly Taylor Touch ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1951/1957. Used ... $24.99
The Billy Taylor touch is mighty nice here – on a blend of tracks that were partially recorded during Billy's earliest years as a leader, and partially recorded during his big rise to fame in the late 50s! Taylor's handling of the piano is beautiful throughout – already quite soulful, but showing some of the warmer, more lyrical modes of Billy's early years too! Half the tracks are from 1951 – recorded with a quartet that includes John Collins on guitar, Shadow Wilson on drums, and Al McKibbon on bass – and the other half are from 1958, with Billy's famous trio with Ed Thigpen on drums and Earl May on bass – a lineup similar to his recordings for ABC. Titles include "Good Groove", "Somebody Loves Me", "You Make Me Feel So Young", "Can You Tell By Looking At Me", and "Earl May". CD

Billy TaylorOne For Fun ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good ... $4.99
It might not be the frolic that the title implies, but that's a plus – because this a straight-up solid early album from Taylor – recorded in tight trio format, with that no-nonsense soulful approach that made him a star player from the start! The group features the great (and underrated) Earl May on bass and Kenny Dennis on drums – both of whom help Taylor work some simple magic that flowers wonderfully as the album moves on. There's a tight, sharp, in the pocket groove here that makes Taylor a key precursor for other piano talents to come in the 60s – and titles include "When Lights Are Low", "At Long Last Love", "Poinciana", "Blue Moon", "One For Fun", and "A Little Southside Soul". Carla ThomasGee Whiz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Warner/Music On Vinyl (Spain), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The first album from Carla Thomas – and one of the first full statements from the burgeoning Stax Records scene of the early 60s! Carla was part of the Stax scene almost from the start – thanks in part to the fact that her father was Rufus Thomas – and she scored big with her own original composition "Gee Whiz, Look At His Eyes" – a single so successful that Stax let Atlantic handle the first full album by Carla, instead of issuing it themselves. The record's got a much sweeter sound than some of Carla's later work – with an approach that's almost uptown soul, and which sets Carla's little girl vocal style amidst fuller arrangements that have a lot of "classy" overtones. The result is a classic bit of 60s soul – and the album features some great original tracks that include "Gee Whiz", "It Ain't Me", "For You", and "A Love Of My Own" – plus versions of "Your Love", "To The Aisle", and "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening". TrammpsTrammps III ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Sealed ... $7.99
The record's so hot, it set fire to the model's shoulder on the cover – and for good reason, too – given the strengths of the Trammps on the Philly Groove scene of the 70s! Many acts tried to copy their sound, but few did it this well – a legendary Philly group who were first out of the gate with the new club style of the 70s – a perfect blend older east coast harmonies and all the best instrumentation that Sigma Sound had to offer – work by the core quintet of Earl Young, Harold Wade, Robert Upchurch, Jimmy Ellis, and Stanley Wade – but a true collaborative effort between wonderful musicians, the production team of Baker Harris & Young, and even master mixer Tom Mouton. There's plenty of great groovers in a Philly disco mode – but our favorite track is the mellowest – "Seasons For Girls", which is a beautiful smooth mellow stepper, one that runs for 8 minutes long, with some excellent harmony vocals. Other titles are great, and include "Love Per Hour", "The Night The Lights Went Out", "People Of The World, Rise", and "Living The Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe TurnerComplete Boss Of The Blues Sings Kansas City Jazz – The Complete Mono & Stereo Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Bear Family (Germany), 1956. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A real classic from blues giant Joe Turner – a singer who burst back to the mainstream on 50s Atlantic Records, thanks to a host of R&B singles that burned up the charts – but who here returns to his roots, and lays down a great set of jazzy tunes that get back to his roots in the Kansas City scene of the 30s! The shift is a bit like that Ray Charles made at the end of the 50s on Atlantic – R&B to more of a jazz-based groove – and Joe works here with great help from Pete Brown on alto, Pete Johnson on piano, Joe Newman on trumpet, and Lawrence Brown on trombone. After the raw hard R&B of Joe's bigger hit sides for Atlantic, the album's a compelling change – a reminder that Turner had roots that went much deeper than his rock and roll fame – and a depth of delivery that would keep his career strong, long after some of his 50s R&B contemporaries faded! The mix of modes – R&B and jazz – is a bit like some of the later Ray Charles albums on Atlantic – and tracks include "Low Down Dog", "Roll Em Pete", "Cherry Red", "How Long Blues", and "Morning Glories". 2CD version features the full albums in both mono and stereo, plus some bonus alternate takes – and the usual great set of notes and presentation from Bear Family! Very tripped out work from Melvin Van Peebles – the multi-talented artist who had a huge influence on African American film in the 70s! Melvin's working here in a a mode that combines soul, folk, funk, and lots of the more messed-up sounds that you'd hear on his own soundtracks for his films. And yes, he can't sing – but he has this wild way of muttering while singing, one that makes the album a really compelling document of culture and politics in the early 70s! The overall feel is sort of like Eugene McDaniels' work for Atlantic from the same time – but more messed up, disorganized, and rootsy! Sweet funky flute from Art Webb – an overlooked 70s jazz player who's probably best known for his Latin fusion work, but who really shines here in a more soul-based setting! This set shows Art working strongly in a mode that references that part of his career, yet also has him stepping into more of the mainstream of funky jazz, too – working with the rhythm section of John Lee and Gerry Brown, plus guitarists Reggie Lucas and Hiram Bullock, and keyboardists Mike Mandel and Hubert Eaves – both of whom make the record sparkle with a soulful fusion sound that's totally great! Arrangements are by Mike Gibbs and John Lee, and overall the album's got a very solid soulful sound. A tasty batch of uptempo instrumentals by Art Webb – a lesser-known funky flute player, but one who played on a huge amount of Latin sessions during the 70s (check your session notes, and you'll see his name a surprising amount of times!) This fairly obscure session as a leader was produced by Patrick Adams, who also did all the arrangements and conducted the large backing group – in a sweet mode that's a mix of Adams' clubby work for P&P, and the tighter fusion that you'd expect to hear on Atlantic records at the time. Webb's flute lines soar over larger backings and some chorus vocals that come across with a more polished take on the P&P sound – a mode that's somewhere in the same territory as Bobbi Humprhey's great late 70s records for Epic. Titles include "Melon Grove", "Mr. Flute", "Smile", "Good Times In Life", and "Come and Get Some Of This". CD

A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because of its progressive nature – but really flowing out with a rich Africanist inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet – and Copeland also arranged all the tracks, transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session. No blues at all – despite the title – and a great set of tracks that showcases the southside Chicago tenor roots of Clarence Wheeler! The album's a bit different than the first two Wheeler albums for Atlantic – in that the group's slightly bigger, and more 70s electric overall – opening up a bit from the small combo club mode that Clarence brought into play, but still keeping things soulful and edgey throughout! At times, the backings even get a bit ambitious – almost hinting at a Cadet Records vibe – with arrangements by Wheeler, Reggie Boyd, Ken Chaney, and Sonny Burke. Pianist Jack Wilson is one of our favorite underdiscovered talents of the 60's – and we treasure all of the albums we can find by him. His lyrical writing and playing are extremely refreshing, and he manages to spin out long free lines on the piano, while also still keeping a very soulful groove. This mid 60's recording for Atlantic features Wilson in a trio with Philly Joe Jones and Leroy Vinnegar, and the record is divided up into "2 sides" – one fast, and one slow. The fast side has Wilson playing a bit more boppishly than usual – on tracks like his own "Kinta" and "Good Time Joe", and Bud Powell's "Glass Enclosure". The slow side is more of our favorite, and features some very nice reditions of material like "The Good Life" and "Once Upon A Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare soul jazz session from alto saxophonist Leo Wright – a player that we mostly know from his bossa work of the early 60s! The session's extremely noteworthy as being one of the few to feature female organist Gloria Coleman – a player with whom Wright worked on her classic 1963 date Soul Sisters, and who returns here in a very similar hard-wailing sax-and-organ mode! Wright's work on alto is incredibly deep – with a sharper bite than much of his other 60s sessions, and a gutsy down-n-dirty quality that makes the record feel like one of the best organ jazz albums at the time from Prestige. Coleman's approach to the Hammond is great too – freely skipping around with a liberated sense of rhythm, in a way that matches Wright's every twist and turn with ease – and throws a few of its own into the mix as well! The group's completed by Kenny Burrell on guitar (also sounding harder here than usual!) and Frankie Dunlop on drums – and titles include some fresh originals "Poopsie's Minor", "State Trooper", "Blue Leo", "Blues Fanfare", and "Soul Talk". All these elements are used slowly, and sparingly – brought in with a style that's modern, but in a gentle sort of way – not as over the top as some of the work that Joe cut with Miles at the end of the 60s – and almost a more sensitive, compositional approach to the same territory of music. Titles include "Arrival In New York", "Doctor Honoris Causa", "In A Silent Way", "His Last Journey", and "Double Image". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rockefeller label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

VariousBeach Beat Vol 2 ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A killer collection of rare 60s soul – very different than you might expect from the title and cover! Remember Beach music? Once upon a time we might have argued that was a more contemporary term for an older genre, like northern soul, but this mighty fine collection from the late 60s on Atlantic shows you the sound's been around for quite some time! A great soundtrack for the beach from the Carolina scene – sweetly loping grooves that got heavy play at summer resorts on the southern shores of the Atlantic! While not all the groups originated in the south, the music's gained a special place in the hearts of folks in the Carolinas, who've come to consider the music their own because of it's slightly stepping beat and gentle kind of groove! A dozen numbers in all, including "Searching For My Love" by Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces, "Teasin' You" by Willie Tee, "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis, "Fat Boy" by Billy Stewart, "Memphis Soul Stew" by King Curtis, "May I" by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs, "Across The Street" by Lenny O'Henry, "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" by Clyde McPhatter, "Idol With The Golden Hand" by the Coasters, "The Entertainer" by Tony Clarke, "Nip Sip" by the Clovers, and "I (Who Have Nothing)" by Ben E King. VariousComplete Stax/Volt Singles 1959 to 1968 (9CD box set) ... CD
Stax/Volt/Atlantic, 1950s. Used 9 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
This is it! A pretty darn complete document of one of the greatest soul labels of all time – put together in a wonderful box with a book on the label that's almost as great as the music on the 9CDs in the set! This one established a new standard for box sets when it was issued in 1991, and it was the first time you could really get a clear picture of the great work of Stax without spending a lifetime tracking down obscure singles. A portion of this work will be familiar to you – as it includes classic tunes by the likes of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, The Bar-Kays, Booker T & The MGs, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, William Bell, and others – but there's also a wealth of amazing soul by artists who recorded for Stax and Volt, yet never made it big on the charts, and never cut full albums for the label. Just a small amount of these folks include The Memphis Nomads, Jeanne & The Darlings, Derek Martin, Barbara & The Browns, Eddie Jefferson, The Tonettes, Macy Skipper, The Premiers, Sir Isaac & The Do-Dads, Ruby Johnson, Bobby Wilson, Eddie Purrell, Sir Mack Rice, and many others. A lifetime of listening in one box – and an essential set if you dig 60s soul! This is the nicely compact jewel case version – 9CDs in a box that's roughly 6" square. CD
(Out of print, outer box has some light edgewear.)

VariousRoots Of The Blues ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the great documents Alan Lomax put together for Atlantic records in the 60s in his Southern Folk Heritage series, featuring ethnographic recordings of rural black music. While the title of this album says it's the "roots" of the blues, there's no shortage of straight up country blues on here, and some great raw documents at that. 13 numbers in all, including "Jim & John","Chevrolet" and "Oree" by Lonnie Young, "The Wild Ox Moan" by Vera Hall, "Been Drinkin' Water Out Of A Hollow Log", "Shake 'Em On Down" and "Freight Train Blues" by Fred McDowell, "All Night Long" by Miles Pratcher, "Levee Camp Reminiscence", "Train Time" and "Drink On Little Girl" by Forest City Joe and "Levee Camp Holler" and "Eighteen Hammers" by Johnny Lee Moore.
