Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". ✨✧ Atlantic StarrAll In The Name Of Love ... LP
Warner, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mid 80s classic from Atlantic Starr – at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". Atlantic StarrAtlantic Starr (with bonus track) ... CD
A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used ... $6.99
The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. CD

✨✧ Ray CharlesBirth Of Soul – The Complete Atlantic Rhythm & Blues Recordings 1952 to 1959 (3 CD box set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1950s. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
You know, over the years, you get exposed to so many cliches about Ray Charles that it's easy to forget how great he is – but you won't after hearing this set! This totally essential box pushes way past any other collection to pull together the raw early R&B sides by Ray – much harder stuff than any of his later country soul work, and way more rockin than even his instrumental sides that show up more as "jazz" efforts. No, this stuff kicks ass – and is right up there with the best 50s R&B work by artists like Tiny Bradshaw, Wynonie Harris, or Ray Brown. Plus, a huge amount of the cuts on here never really appeared on full LPs, so it's not like you'll be able to track them down that easily on other reissues. There's a wealth of excellent material here that will open up a whole new side of Ray for you – and which will fill in loads of holes if you've already got some of his work. There's a total of 53 tracks in all, plus a great set of notes and a very handsome box – and titles include "What Kind Of Man Are You", "Get On The Right Track", "Leave My Woman Alone", "Roll With My Baby", "Jumpin In The Morning", "It Should Have Been Me", "Feelin Sad", "Mess Around", "I Wonder Who", "Blackjack", "Greenbacks", "A Fool For You", "Hard Times", "A Bit Of Soul", "I Want To Know", "It's Alright", "Ain't That Love", and "That's Enough". All cuts are vocal – and this is some of the most satisfying Ray Charles you could ever buy! CD

Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". The cover may look a bit scientific – but the music is plenty soulful throughout – a package that brings together four key singles from that momentous musical year of 1968 – a time when Aretha Franklin was really finding her sound at Atlantic Records! The music here represents Aretha really stretching out from the earlier years – not just in the deep soul modes that would forever put her on the map – but also with some sophisticated touches that would forever earn her a place as the first lady of soul – as you'll hear on titles that include "My Song", "See Saw", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "You Send Me", and "The House That Jack Built". Great design, too – a book-style cover, with the singles in the pages! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
Killer work from Freddie Hubbard – some key transitional sides for Atlantic Records, and easily some of his most soulful work ever! Freddie started out as a bopper on Blue Note, but then made a great shift at Atlantic – exploring space and sound in a really wonderful way, and opening up towards some of the killer modes you'd know from his classics on CTI. There's just a bit of electricity in the mix here, as most cuts are acoustic – but they already stretch out in some hip, spiritual styles that are really great. Titles include "For BP", "Lonely Soul", "High Blues Pressure", "Midnite Soul", "Black Soldier", Interlude I", "Echoes Of Blue", "Threnody For Sharon Tate Comment", "Spacetrack", "Leap Frog", "Up Jumped Spring", "Latina", and "On The Quee Tee". ✨✧ Barbara LewisDon't Forget About Me – The Atlantic & Reprise Recordings (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Damn fantastic work from Barbara Lewis – one of our favorite soul singers of the 60s, and an artist who's a bit unlike anyone else! Lewis hails from the Detroit area, but also did a fair bit of early recording in Chicago – and in a way, her sound is maybe a mix of the class of Motown with some of the sophistication that was coming into the Chess Records soul work as the 60s moved on – both modes that Lewis held together perfectly, and with a quality that was years ahead of her time! On these sides, Barbara can be groovy, but never silly – open with her emotions, but never imprisoned by them – often working with the best arrangers of the time, like Arif Mardin or Riley Hampton – and even getting backing support from members of The Dells on a number of cuts. The set is amazing – six full albums' worth of material recorded for Atlantic, plus lots of non-album tracks and b-sides, one unreleased track, and two sides from a very obscure Reprise Records single in 1973. There's never been a collection of Lewis' work like this – a massive 68 track package, with details on all the sessions, and superb sound throughout! CD

Atlantic/Run Out Groove, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of Barbara Lynn's records for Atlantic – a set that includes many of her 45-only tracks, which weren't on her full album for the label – plus one song that was only first issued in recent years! Lynn's a real standout in 60s soul music – a singer with a style that's as deep and personal as any of the best southern soul artists of the time, but also a way of putting over a tune that's maybe even more forthright and confident – partly because Barbara composed a good deal of her own material! A good deal of the work was produced by Huey P Meux in Mississippi – with a vibe that's both different from more familiar southern styles of the time, and even some of Huey's later material in the 70s – one more quality that really makes the work sound quite fresh. A few more tracks were recorded by the great Spooner Oldham – who brings in some sweet Muscle Shoals elements – and titles include the unreleased "Soul Deep", plus "This Is The Thanks I Get", "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", "You Make Me So Hot", "You'll Lose A Good Thing", "I'm A One Man Woman", "Sufferin City", "Maybe We Can Slip Away", "You're Gonna See A Lot More Of My Leavin", "You're Too Hot To Hold", and "Nice & Easy". A fantastic collection of work from the legendary Esther Phillips – one of the most distinct voices in soul music, captured here during some key moments in her career! The box is huge – and begins with a full CD of tracks from Esther's initial years on Lenox Records – a label that helped her mature from "Little Esther Phillips", as a girl R&B singer in the 50s – to the much more mature artist she'd become on CTI/Kudu in the 70s! The set features 20 Lenox tracks – the first a stunning set of country soul material that makes Esther one of the first female artists to take on the work, followed by rare singles and a few duets with Big Al Downing. Next are 77 more tracks from Phillips' years at Atlantic Records – material that initially takes off from the Lenox material, then moves into a really great range of styles – sometimes jazzy and sophisticated, sometimes rootsy and bluesy, sometimes a bit more deep soul too – including some live material that really shows the power she could pack at the time. In between the Atlantic cuts, are also nestled 6 more numbers recorded for Roulette Records in 1969 – especially rare tracks that have a slightly different approach – and which are a key part of the set here, along with some other unreleased material. A masterpiece from Will "Quantic" Holland – an artist who always surprises us with new sounds, but really blows us away with the depth in this set! Quantic started out groovy, then got funky and soulful, then embraced a range of Latin cultures in later work – and throughout that long musical journey, he's never failed to keep on growing – always stepping forward towards new sonic horizons, rather than be content to serve up the same sounds that got him attention in the first place! Subtle strings are added to beats (both acoustic and electric), keyboards, and just the right use of vocals from Nidia Gongora, Alice Russell, Denita Odigie, and Holland himself – so that the album's got this balance between instrumental activity and lyrical passages – the shifting voices never taking the spotlight away from the larger musical vision that Quantic uses to guide the whole proceedings. Sly5thAve also adds in some great work – and titles include "Tierra Mama", "Incendium", "Divergence", "Is it Your Intention", "La Reflexion", "Orquidea", "September Blues", and "Now Or Never". CD

Nat AdderleyAutobiography ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. Used ... $24.99
A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! The set features all original material by Nat – with older gems and new favorites that include "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A mix of fusiony jazz rock, a bit of funk and some more sweeping arrangements – sometimes in the span of a single song on this fairly underappreciated Atlantic set from Jan Akkerman! Mixing easy listening and funk is the kind of thing that's pulled off pretty well, or falls completely flat, and Jan makes it work here. A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. Includes "Stingray (Get Up With That)", "Wait And See" "She's So Divine", "This Is The One", "Night Prayer" and "Time Out Of Mind". CD

✨✧ Harold AlexanderRaw Root ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". CD

Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The word from Mose is mighty darn hip – served up here in a sweet Atlantic Records session that seems to really hone into all the mod influences his music would have in the 60s! The rootsy quality of Allison's earlier records is still firmly in place – but the group also has a tighter feel that's almost more soul jazz – thanks, in part, to work from Ben Tucker on bass – in a groove that's similar to some of his own contributions to 60s jazz. Titles include a great version of "Foolkiller" – one of Mose's greatest tracks – plus "One Of These Days", "Days Like These", "Your Red Wagon", "Look Here", "I'm Not Talking", and "New Parchman". What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Atlantic/Tummy Touch, Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.98
Fantastic funky soul from Steve Arrington – the drummer who got his start in Slave, then really exploded on his own with a host of great records in the 80s! This batch of tracks is from those key initial solo years – and the set not only features some of the key cuts that Steve recorded for Atlantic, but also includes a number of never-heard jams that are from the same vintage, and issued here for the first time ever! Arrington's music has been out on the reissue market before, but never in a format that's as well-chosen, well-packed, and well-thought out as this one. Previously unreleased tracks include "Funk & Roll Junky", "Why", and "Mysterious Woman" – and other tracks include "Special FX From Mras", "The Message", "Tribute To John Coltrane", "Without Your Love", "Summertime Lovin", "Hyperspace", and "Crazy About You". 10 tracks in all on the vinyl version. Ars NovaSunshine & Shadows ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $11.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Fantastic work from Archie Bell & The Drells – an important record that bridges their earlier and later sounds! It's a key transitional album for the crew – as most of the album's in the harder rawer Texas funk groove of earlier year, but some of it features newer production by Gamble & Huff, in that excellent smooth dancing style that took Archie light years from his roots. The Gamble & Huff tracks are the most obvious – the singles "I Can't Stop Dancing" and "Do The Choo Choo" – and the album's got other great cuts like the original tunes "Do You Feel It?", "You're Such A Beautiful Child", "Jammin In Houston", and "Love Will Rain On You", plus versions of Curtis Mayfield's "I've Been Trying" and "Sometimes I Wonder". A Germany disco classic from Boney M – poppy, kitschy, but with some undeniably catchy bits too! The set kicks off with the group's classic "Daddy Cool" – a tone so hokey, it'll make you wince – but which'll also have you sneaking back to the turntable when nobody's looking, just to hear it again. The rest of the record offers up similar pleasures – jaunty rhythms, quirky lyrics, and an unabashed pop sensibility that's certainly not the New York underground at its finest – but which certainly isn't bad on its own, either! An excellent smooth soul groover from Johnny Bristol! The album has Johnny stepping into a more sophisticated groove than he used on his early 70s albums for MGM – mixing together styles that sound a lot like those used by artists like Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware at the time, a mix of well-produced backings with just the right touch of strings, keyboards, and tight rhythms. Johnny's voice has a bit rootsier quality than you might be used to for this sort of album – which makes for an even more unique sound, especially on the mellower cuts. Tracks include "Do It To My Mind", "Have Yourself A Good Time Thinkin' Bout The Good Times", "You Turned Me On To Love", "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya", and "She Came Into My Life". Nice one! CD

The album's got a sweet warm feel – and the richness of the songwriting and vocals make us wonder why Johnny wasn't a bigger star on his own – because each new track is a gem, and the album's got a quality level to match the best of the biggest names of the 70s! However, it's also gems like this that keep us digging through the history of soul music – looking under the surface of the big stars to find excellent work from "almost rans" like Johnny! The group's a quartet – and has Gary's vibes alongside warm guitar lines from Sam Brown – a player whose sense of tone and timing really echoes that of Burton – cascading fresh sounds one minute, laying back in waves the next – always hitting the right balance of space and tone to keep things right. Other players include Tony Levin on electric bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – and tracks are nice and long, with that sort of extra-imaginative quality that always seems to happen with American jazzmen working in Japan at this time. Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
The first album by 80s dancefloor soul diva Jenny Burton – a gleaming, synthesizer and computer grooves laden effort that may have aged pretty quickly after it's initial release – but sounds pretty sweet today and stands out for its embrace of both ultra modern electro soul sounds and chart ready hooks! Jenny's can really belt out the soulful vocals, and the sounds put together by producer/one man band John Robie bring in elements of early hip hop and synthy pop funk – with drum machines, Moogs, synthesizers, keys, and guitar. Titles include "Rock Steady", "Small Rewards", "Players", "You'll Never Come Again", "Remember What You Like", "All The Time/Time" and "Vena Cava". CD

Jenny BurtonJenny Burton (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/FTG, 1985. Used ... $11.99
A classic from Jenny Burton – only the singer's second album as a solo act, but already a set that has Jenny hitting on all burners! The mellow numbers are great – never sleepy or too commercial, but pushed into just the right blend of polish and soul – and the groovers have some electro touches that hint back and Burton's start working with John Robie – modes that are underdone here in ways that hold together a lot more strongly than the usual electro dancefloor cut. Some production is by Maurice Starr – and cuts include "Dancing For My Love", "Bad Habits", "Once In A Lifetime Love", "Load It Up", and "Love Runs Deeper Than Pride". CD features bonus tracks – "Bad Habits (7" version)", "Dancing For My Love (voc)", and "Dancing For My Love (dub)". CD

Ron CarterUptown Conversation (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Embryo/Atlantic (Japan), 1970. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
A beautiful album by Ron Carter – and quite rare, too! The record features a group that's got a nice 70s modal soul jazz sound – with players that include Herbie Hancock on acoustic and electric piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Sam Brown on guitar, and both Billy Cobham and Grady Tate on drums – all working in sweet small group mode alongside Carter's excellent work on acoustic and Fender bass. The sound is sometimes spacey, sometimes groovy – and marks a key chapter in Carter's career, one that has him stepping out of the background into a great role as a leader – setting the stage for many more albums to come in the 70s! Titles include the very funky "Uptown Conversation", plus the tracks "Half A Row", "Doom", "Little Waltz", "Ten Strings" and "Einbahnstrasse". Very soulful, with a stone mellow moody groove! CD
(Out of print, 2005 pressing in a beautiful gatefold sleeve – includes obi!)
