Atlantic BridgeAtlantic Bridge (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A very cool quartet from the British jazz/rock years – but one who were a lot more jazz-based than some of their contemporaries! These guys are all instrumental, and although a number of their tunes are familiar rock standards from the late 60s, they don't play them like rock tunes at all – and instead used them as freewheeling vehicles for solo exploration –r eally stretching out in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's mighty nice! Leader Mike McNaught plays both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano – and the group also features Daryl Runswick on bass, Mike Travis on drums and percussion, and Jim Philip on some especially great flute, tenor, and soprano sax – the last of which really soars up beautifully next to the Rhodes! The set is maybe a bit in the mode of some of John Klemmer's electrified work from the same time, but also more British too – although not without a fair degree of soul on the keyboards. Titles include "Dreams", "Rosecrans Boulevard", "Something", "Dear Prudence", and "Childhood Room". CD

Atlantic StarrBrilliance ... LP
A&M, 1982. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
The title's certainly right on this one – because Atlantic Starr serve up a really brilliant blend of electro funk and mainstream soul – balanced with that near-perfect sound that made them one of the best groups of their generation! Despite the size of the combo, the sound is relatively lean – a very focused balance of basslines, keyboards, and some tightly snapping 80s groove rhythms – served up with vocals that warmly cascade over the tops of the tunes, but usually take a second seat to the extremely compelling instrumentation. The sound is polished, but never too slick – and the group are a great example of how well soul from this time could sound when done just the right way! Titles include "Love Me Down", "Sexy Dancer", "Circles", "Love Moves", "Your Love Finally Ran Out", and "You're The One". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray CharlesBirth Of Soul – The Complete Atlantic Rhythm & Blues Recordings 1952 to 1959 (3 CD box set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1950s. Used 3 CDs ... $14.99
You know, over the years, you get exposed to so many cliches about Ray Charles that it's easy to forget how great he is – but you won't after hearing this set! This totally essential box pushes way past any other collection to pull together the raw early R&B sides by Ray – much harder stuff than any of his later country soul work, and way more rockin than even his instrumental sides that show up more as "jazz" efforts. No, this stuff kicks ass – and is right up there with the best 50s R&B work by artists like Tiny Bradshaw, Wynonie Harris, or Ray Brown. Plus, a huge amount of the cuts on here never really appeared on full LPs, so it's not like you'll be able to track them down that easily on other reissues. There's a wealth of excellent material here that will open up a whole new side of Ray for you – and which will fill in loads of holes if you've already got some of his work. There's a total of 53 tracks in all, plus a great set of notes and a very handsome box – and titles include "What Kind Of Man Are You", "Get On The Right Track", "Leave My Woman Alone", "Roll With My Baby", "Jumpin In The Morning", "It Should Have Been Me", "Feelin Sad", "Mess Around", "I Wonder Who", "Blackjack", "Greenbacks", "A Fool For You", "Hard Times", "A Bit Of Soul", "I Want To Know", "It's Alright", "Ain't That Love", and "That's Enough". All cuts are vocal – and this is some of the most satisfying Ray Charles you could ever buy! CD
(Out of print, BMG music club pressing. Outer box has some light edgewear, noting major.)

A wonderful document of a crucial year in the life of Aretha Franklin – 1967, the year in which she really found her wings, and took off in the company of Atlantic Records! Atlantic really helped Aretha find just the right sort of setting for her magnificent vocals – kind of a more sophisticated take on the southern soul styles of the time, served up here majestically on her five key singles for the year! The set is book-style, and features both the a- and b-sides of the singles – titles that include "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Respect", "Dr Feelgood", "Baby I Love You", "Going Down Slow", "A Natural Woman", "Baby Baby Baby", "Chain Of Fools", and "Prove It". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Atlantic (Japan), 1965/1966. New Copy 2CD ... $49.99
Think you know the sound of Atlantic Records in the 60s? Think again – because this stunning series opens the vault to a huge amount of rare treasures from the legendary label! The package is amazing – and offers up rare tracks that were mostly only issued by Atlantic on singles – including some on the other imprints associated with the company – some by names we never even knew recorded for the label, others by bigger names, but represented here by obscure material that goes way past their hits – and which is ultra cool because of that. There's also a fair bit more deep soul than you might expect from the usual Atlantic mix – tremendous vocals, and often in less hit-heavy modes – which makes the whole thing a great revelation – and just one more reason to bow down and give even more expect to one of the key companies who helped soul music find a home in the 60s. Plus – as if that's not enough – the whole thing comes in a very cool 7" gatefold package – which emphasizes the from-singles nature of the collection. Volume 3 is overflowing with amazing sounds from the heart of the 60s – rare 45rpm tracks by Atlantic stars, Stax artists, and a few lesser-knowns too. Titles include "Hello Stranger" by The Capitols, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Ray Sharpe, "Long Distance Love" by Ted Taylor, "Lonely Soldier" by Mike Williams, "How Can You Babysit A Man" by Ned Towns, "Keep Looking" by Solomon Bourke, "I'm Sorry" by Fred Lowrey, "Please Uncle Sam" by The Charmels, "Share What You Got" by William Bell, "Reputation" by The Four Shells, "Me & My Baby" by Mary Wells, "Got No One" by The Delcardos, "Weak Spot" by Ruby Johnson, "Good Love Bad Love" by Eddie Floyd, "Bingo" by Ned Towns, "I Had A Dream" by Johnny Taylor, "I Can't Take It" by Ray Sharpe, "You Can't Love Them All" by The Drifters, "Believe It Or Not" by Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers, "Patch My Heart" by The Mad Lads, "She's The One I Love" by The Delcardos, "Find Me Somebody" by Bobby Womack, "Hello Stranger" by The Capitols, "So Much Love" by Ben E King, "Help The Bear" by Ted Taylor, and "I Feel A Sin Coming On" by Solomon Burke. Ace Spectrum change things up a bit here from the obvious – hitting a variety of modes that move between tightness you might expect from The Spinners to some of the looser styles bubbling up in the indie underground at the time. Some tunes get a bit funky – almost with a blacksploitation undercurrent, which really comes as a nice surprise – and arrangements are by Patrick Adams and Bert DeCoteaux, trading back and forth throughout the album to keep things fresh! Titles include "Low Rent Rendezvous", "I Just Want To Spend The Night With You", "Beautiful Love", "Do You Remember Yesterday", "Without You", "Trust Me", and a surprisingly compelling version of "Laughter In The Rain". Action Bronson with a no nonsense approach on his second proper full length – also serving as an entry Blue Chips mixtape series – bringing a stripped to the core, rugged and raw style that's more than welcome at a time when he's a legit media personality when not spitting rhymes! The vibe is a nice mix of spontaneous and well crafted, with production not only by Party Supplies this time, but also Alchemist, Harry Fraud and Daringer. Includes "Wolfpack", "La Luna", "The Chairman's Intent", "Hot Peppter: feat Meyhem Lauren & Jah Tiger," Bonzai", "Let It Rain", "My Right Lung", "Tank" and "Durag Vs Headband" feat Big Body Bes, "The Choreographer" and "Chop Chop Chop". Nice hard swingin' quintet session, with a good late 60's groove. Nat Adderley borrows brother Cannonball's pianist Joe Zawinul, and Joe Henderson sits in on tenor. The set was recorded live, with the same sort of relaxed funky groove as the Cannonball live sets from the time. Cuts include "Fun", "Lavender Woman", "Painted Desert", and "On My Journey Now". Nice stuff, and the kind of material that Atlantic probably won't reissue anytime in the near future. LP, Vinyl record album

The great Leroy Burgess is still going strong on this later album from Aleem – shifting his sound to hit more of an 80s street soul groove, but one that's also got the tighter elements you'd expect from a major label set at the time! Burgess has a voice that's schooled in disco and indie club, but which turns out to be even better for chunkier, more synopated styles – provided by the heavier beats here, at a level that almost makes the set a precursor to later new jack modes. Titles include "Searchin", "Love Shock", "Jackpot", "Sweet Treat", "Lonely Tears", "Burn It Up", and "Genuine Love Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Mose's mid 60s albums for Atlantic – recorded live, with a bit more of a hip flair than some of his earlier work for Prestige and Columbia, but still with those great vocals that went onto influence a generation of beatnik jazz singers. Mose has more than a bit of New Orleans in his tone – but he's also got some northern distance from his material, bringing a nice bit of wit into the recordings. There's a total of 11 tracks including "Parchman Farm", "Smashed", "Seventh Son", "Fool's Paradise", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "The Chaser". LP, Vinyl record album

What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. A great solo classic from Steve Arrington – who continued to make excellent music long after leaving Slave, thanks to records like this! The Hall Of Fame sound is almost a refinement of the earlier Slave groove – a bit more focused and stripped down for the 80s, with a definite emphasis on the basslines – and an approach to funk that's equally well-suited to pick up some ears from early hip hop listeners too! The whole thing comes off perfectly – tight, but never too commercial – and lean, but never with a fake "street" sort of sound to get in the way. Titles include "Nobody Can Beat You", "You Meet My Approval", "Speak With Your Body", "Weak At The Knees", "Beddie Biey", and "Way Out". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". The material was recorded at the Ann Arbor Festival in 1972 – and has the Ensemble playing with a sense of focus and power that's even stronger than their previous indie and European records – really hitting their stride before a large live audience who totally gets their groove, and really eggs them on with enthusiastic support! As usual, the range of instrumentation is great – lots of different reeds, percussion, and brass – handled by the legendary lineup of Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. A blinding reissue of Roy's early jazz work for Atlantic! Both records are great, and feature super-hip lineups that include players like Herbie Hancock, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Henderson, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, and Ron Carter. Despite the early placement of the material in Roy's career, his conception on the vibes is extremely mature, and both records represent a haunting new conception of the instrument that was to later emerge in full force on Roy's jazz funk albums for Polygram a few years later. These Atlantic sides are essential listening for Roy, and they're amazing little records that show a previously under-recognized side of his career. They're filled with great original tracks like "Ayerloom", "Virgo Vibes", "Glow Flower", "Shadows", and "Daddy Bug" – and the sound and package is excellent! CD

An early album as a leader from the great Roy Ayers – a set that captures the vibes man at a time when he'd been working on the west coast soul jazz scene, and was stepping into even greater fame in the group of Herbie Mann! Yet this set is definitely Roy's own – kind of an introduction to the more righteous sounds he'd pursue in the 70s, set up in an instrumental mode with great help from Herbie Hancock on piano, Gary Bartz on alto, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, and Hubert Laws on flute – all ultra-hip players who really bring a lot to the record! And despite the colorful cover, and its reference of a pop hit, there's a much deeper vibe going on here – on titles that include a great version of Jobim's "Wave" – done like we've never heard it before – plus the original cuts "What The People Say", "Lil's Paradise", and "A Rose For Cindy". Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $3.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". ✨✧ Dee Dee BridgewaterDee Dee Bridgewater (1976) ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dee Dee Bridgewater's first album as a soul singer – recorded a few years after she first broke on the scene as a righteous jazz vocalist on hip early 70s classics! The sound here is different than the material Bridgewater started with, but still plenty great from a soul perspective – tightly-crafted, sophisticated work that features both uptempo and mellow cuts – in a mode that's quite similar to the Columbia work of Marlena Shaw – another former jazz vocalist who made a 70s shift to soul. Production is by Gene Page, Jerry Wexler, and Stephen Scheaffer – and the set was recorded in a variety of different setting that spin out over the course of the tracks. We're most partial to the mellow cuts – which trip along with some great spacey edges – and titles include a great version of "He's Gone", plus "My Prayer", "You Saved Me", "Goin Through The Motions", "It Ain't Easy", and "Every Man Wants Another Man's Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave BrubeckAll The Things We Are ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $6.99
One of the best Dave Brubeck albums from later years – and one of the hippest! The record is noteworthy for its pairing of Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz – the former a rising star at the time, influenced strongly by the latter in his roots – showcased here in some rare moments of Braxton straight-aheadness! Brubeck's contribution is heard most strongly on the album's extended trio "Jimmy Van Huesen Medley" – played by Dave with Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. But we're most partial to the saxophone tunes – Konitz playing a spare duet with Brubeck on "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", soloing with the group on "Like Someone In Love", duetting with Braxton on "All The Things You Are" – and stepping back to let Anthony play with Dave on a version of "In Your Own Sweet Way". Really great stuff throughout – and a unique Brubeck moment! CD

Dave BrubeckWe're All Together Again For The First Time ... CD
Atlantic, 1973. Used ... $5.99
Kind of a meeting of two different generations of Dave Brubeck – as the group here features Paul Desmond's alto sax, a key force in Dave's early recordings – and the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan, a player who'd worked often with Brubeck in the late 60s and early 70s! The blend of horns is really amazing, and the live recording really moves past other obvious Brubeck modes – showing Dave's whole new conception after the breakup of the original quartet – and his willingness to open into new rhythms, and even freer modes of expression. Mulligan's baritone is wonderfully powerful – coming across here with a depth that we'd hardly have expected a few years before – and rhythm is from Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums, both players who also add to the transformation of the Brubeck groove. Titles include "Koto Song", "Unfinished Woman", "Truth", "Take Five", and "Rotterdam Blues". CD

Dave Brubeck with Gerry MulliganLast Set At Newport ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A rare meeting of 2 modern talents from the 50s – joined together in one unique performance from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1971! The baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan's a nice contrast to the usual Brubeck alto of Paul Desmond – long-departed from Dave's combo by this time, but referenced strongly by Gerry in his fluid lines for the set, almost a solo culmination here of previous recorded duets with Desmond in earlier years. Tracks are all quite longish, and given that Dave's group here features Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums, there's a quality to the session that's a fait bit more rhythmic than before – pulsating strongly with forceful lines on Brubeck's piano, and an overall feel that's much more freewheeling than you'd expect! Album features 3 long tunes – "Blues For Newport", "Open The Gates", and "Take Five". CD

A mixed bag of tracks from Gary – but a really nice record overall, one that has him stretching out in the Atlantic years! 3 of the album's tracks were recorded live in Montreux, the others were recorded back in New York – and Gary plays a variety of instruments in addition to vibes, including electric piano, organ, and piano. Tracks are a mixture of modern and hippy, and titles include "Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place", "The Sunset Bell", "Hullo Bolinas", "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", and "Chega De Saudade". Gary BurtonGood Vibes ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1970. Used ... $11.99
Gary hits a sweet electric funky sound here – working in a group that includes Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on piano and organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The album's got a bit of trippiness to it – kind of in the style of some of Herbie Mann's funky production work for the Vortex label – and a few cuts have producer Joel Dorn working with Arif Mardin on the cuts, giving them a more expansive sound that pushes Burton's playing nicely. The vibes have a dark chromatic quality to them that sounds great next to the sweeter playing of the funky player – and the record's filled with nice numbers like "Vibrafinger", "Las Vegas Tango", "Boston Marathon", and "Leroy The Magician". ✨✧ Gary BurtonThrob ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very groovy record from vibes legend Gary Burton – a set that was done for Atlantic Records right after Gary's big rise to genius on RCA – but with a feel that's even wilder than those wonderful records! There's a bit of the Vortex Records approach going on here – some slight psychedelic elements that come not just from Gary's vibes, but from the excellent guitar work from Jerry Hahn – who can play jazz, but with some of the trippiness of a rock musician – yet in a way that's still very laidback, and pre-fusion overall. The group also features Steve Swallow on bass, Bill Goodwin on drums, and a bit of violin from Richard Greene – and the blend of electric and acoustic strings with the vibes is mighty nice – with a sound that's sharper and more pointed than Burton's ECM music to come. Titles include "Turn Of The Century", "Chickens", "Some Echoes", "Throb", "Doin the Pig", and "Henniger Flats". LP, Vinyl record album

Quite a surprising pairing of talents – and a set that shows that at in the right settings, Stephane Grappelli's still got plenty of modern moments! The core group is really that of vibist Gary Burton – with Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – both players with an open, spacious feel that's quite different than the usual rhythm group for a Grappelli record – which really opens up the legendary violinist, and has him stretching out wonderfully – especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Burton's vibes are great at this point – sharp toned, yet incredibly warm too – and titles include "Daphne", "Blue In Green", "Sweet Rain", "Coquette", and "Arpege". LP, Vinyl record album
