Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Atlantic StarrAtlantic Starr (with bonus track) ... CD
A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... $10.99
The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

✨✧ Atlantic StarrWe're Movin Up ... LP
Warner, 1989. Sealed ... $4.99
The last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". ✨✧ Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

✨✧ Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. CD

John ColtraneHeavyweight Champion – Complete Atlantic Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 7 CDs & Book ... $49.99
An amazing set of work by John Coltrane – some of his best recordings ever, tracks that form a pivotal point between his later 50s work with Miles Davis and his mid 60s spiritual searching years. The set's unbelievably exhaustive – and includes every track that was ever issued by Coltrane on an Atlantic album, plus some great alternate takes, plus a 72 page hardbound book of photos and writings, plus a whole CD of rare material that was never issued before! (The folks at Atlantic say that they would have loved to make an even bigger set – but after a fire in their warehouse in the 70s, this one CD of tapes is all that ever remained!) The whole package is incredibly well put together – in a small discrete box with some great fold-out CD cases, and a wonderful mechanism for storage that's as great as the music in the set. Titles include "Syeeda's Song Flute", "Ole", "My Favorite Things", "Cousin Mary", "Giant Steps", "Mr Day", "Blues To Elvin", "Satellite", "Liberia", "Dahomey Dance", and sooooo much more! CD

✨✧ Electric Peanut Butter CompanyElectric Peanut Butter Company – Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics Vol 2 ... CD
Ubiquity, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful collaboration between Shawn Lee and Adrian Quesada – and a set that maybe goes further than a lot of recent work from the artists on their own! Quesada's ear for the psychedelic mixes wonderfully with Lee's funky grooves – in a space that's as trippy as it is soulful, and which wonderfully skirts a space between all the different genres you'd be likely to find in the coolest crate digger's collection! There's vocals on many tracks – but slung out over core instrumentation that really gets things going from a soulful perspective – so much so that even some of the more rockish moments soon get plenty funky. Keyboards are wonderful, production is rock-solid, and the whole thing's exactly the kind of nugget you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Going In Circles", "Christophe Waltz", "Tape Lifter", "Cold Blood", "Dreams", "Mono Man", "Big Tweed", and "Backstreet Wall". CD

Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". The cover may look a bit scientific – but the music is plenty soulful throughout – a package that brings together four key singles from that momentous musical year of 1968 – a time when Aretha Franklin was really finding her sound at Atlantic Records! The music here represents Aretha really stretching out from the earlier years – not just in the deep soul modes that would forever put her on the map – but also with some sophisticated touches that would forever earn her a place as the first lady of soul – as you'll hear on titles that include "My Song", "See Saw", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "You Send Me", and "The House That Jack Built". Great design, too – a book-style cover, with the singles in the pages! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
Killer work from Freddie Hubbard – some key transitional sides for Atlantic Records, and easily some of his most soulful work ever! Freddie started out as a bopper on Blue Note, but then made a great shift at Atlantic – exploring space and sound in a really wonderful way, and opening up towards some of the killer modes you'd know from his classics on CTI. There's just a bit of electricity in the mix here, as most cuts are acoustic – but they already stretch out in some hip, spiritual styles that are really great. Titles include "For BP", "Lonely Soul", "High Blues Pressure", "Midnite Soul", "Black Soldier", Interlude I", "Echoes Of Blue", "Threnody For Sharon Tate Comment", "Spacetrack", "Leap Frog", "Up Jumped Spring", "Latina", and "On The Quee Tee". Barbara LewisDon't Forget About Me – The Atlantic & Reprise Recordings (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Damn fantastic work from Barbara Lewis – one of our favorite soul singers of the 60s, and an artist who's a bit unlike anyone else! Lewis hails from the Detroit area, but also did a fair bit of early recording in Chicago – and in a way, her sound is maybe a mix of the class of Motown with some of the sophistication that was coming into the Chess Records soul work as the 60s moved on – both modes that Lewis held together perfectly, and with a quality that was years ahead of her time! On these sides, Barbara can be groovy, but never silly – open with her emotions, but never imprisoned by them – often working with the best arrangers of the time, like Arif Mardin or Riley Hampton – and even getting backing support from members of The Dells on a number of cuts. The set is amazing – six full albums' worth of material recorded for Atlantic, plus lots of non-album tracks and b-sides, one unreleased track, and two sides from a very obscure Reprise Records single in 1973. There's never been a collection of Lewis' work like this – a massive 68 track package, with details on all the sessions, and superb sound throughout! CD

Atlantic/Run Out Groove, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A killer collection of Barbara Lynn's records for Atlantic – a set that includes many of her 45-only tracks, which weren't on her full album for the label – plus one song that was only first issued in recent years! Lynn's a real standout in 60s soul music – a singer with a style that's as deep and personal as any of the best southern soul artists of the time, but also a way of putting over a tune that's maybe even more forthright and confident – partly because Barbara composed a good deal of her own material! A good deal of the work was produced by Huey P Meux in Mississippi – with a vibe that's both different from more familiar southern styles of the time, and even some of Huey's later material in the 70s – one more quality that really makes the work sound quite fresh. A few more tracks were recorded by the great Spooner Oldham – who brings in some sweet Muscle Shoals elements – and titles include the unreleased "Soul Deep", plus "This Is The Thanks I Get", "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", "You Make Me So Hot", "You'll Lose A Good Thing", "I'm A One Man Woman", "Sufferin City", "Maybe We Can Slip Away", "You're Gonna See A Lot More Of My Leavin", "You're Too Hot To Hold", and "Nice & Easy". A fantastic collection of work from the legendary Esther Phillips – one of the most distinct voices in soul music, captured here during some key moments in her career! The box is huge – and begins with a full CD of tracks from Esther's initial years on Lenox Records – a label that helped her mature from "Little Esther Phillips", as a girl R&B singer in the 50s – to the much more mature artist she'd become on CTI/Kudu in the 70s! The set features 20 Lenox tracks – the first a stunning set of country soul material that makes Esther one of the first female artists to take on the work, followed by rare singles and a few duets with Big Al Downing. Next are 77 more tracks from Phillips' years at Atlantic Records – material that initially takes off from the Lenox material, then moves into a really great range of styles – sometimes jazzy and sophisticated, sometimes rootsy and bluesy, sometimes a bit more deep soul too – including some live material that really shows the power she could pack at the time. In between the Atlantic cuts, are also nestled 6 more numbers recorded for Roulette Records in 1969 – especially rare tracks that have a slightly different approach – and which are a key part of the set here, along with some other unreleased material. Stunning – the first time Esther's ever gotten such wonderful treatment – a big box set with detained notes too! CD

A masterpiece from Will "Quantic" Holland – an artist who always surprises us with new sounds, but really blows us away with the depth in this set! Atlantic (Japan), 1965. Used ... $19.99
A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! The set features all original material by Nat – with older gems and new favorites that include "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". A mix of fusiony jazz rock, a bit of funk and some more sweeping arrangements – sometimes in the span of a single song on this fairly underappreciated Atlantic set from Jan Akkerman! Mixing easy listening and funk is the kind of thing that's pulled off pretty well, or falls completely flat, and Jan makes it work here. A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". CD

One of Mose Allison's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". Great 60s work from Mose Allison – a key record cut at that time when his influence was being felt strongly on the other side of the Atlantic – by younger London singers like Georgie Fame and Zoot Money! Mose is almost answering back with this great little record – hitting things with a sharp punch, and a nice undercurrent of soul and R&B – always in that New Orleans-informed groove, with loads of wonderful self-penned lyrics that really make the set sparkle! Allison's piano is plenty strong in the lead, and the album features the unlikely rhythm team of Earl May on bass and Paul Motian on drums – adding in some interesting changes on titles that include "War Horse", "Wild Man On The Loose", "Power House", "Night Watch", and "No Trouble Living". A bit more pop than some of Steve Arrington's earlier work, but proof that Mr Slave could still come up with a groove when he wanted! The record's got a quirky approach that's almost in line with later versions of P-Funk – but Arrington's never as goofy, and mostly lets the gimmicks come out in the titles and choruses, while keeping things relatively straight on the rest of the tune. "Fantastic" is right – because Dorothy Ashby is one of the coolest, grooviest people to ever lay her fingers on a harp – and just about one of the few who've ever found a way to use the instrument in a jazz-based setting! This mid 60s date is a pivotal one for Ashby – as it has her opening up with some groovier touches than on her previous jazz records for Savoy and Prestige – a bit more of the sound that would showcase more strongly on her Chess/Cadet albums, given a nice sort of Atlantic sense of soul here! Players here are very hip – and include Richard Davis on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and Willie Bobo on percussion – plus an expanded trombone section on a few titles too. Sure, it's not classic funky Average White Band, but the album's a great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth – and Hamish Stuart's lost none of his vocal charm, and in fact may even sound better in a more laidback, less funky heavy setting! Both records are great, and feature super-hip lineups that include players like Herbie Hancock, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Henderson, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, and Ron Carter. Despite the early placement of the material in Roy's career, his conception on the vibes is extremely mature, and both records represent a haunting new conception of the instrument that was to later emerge in full force on Roy's jazz funk albums for Polygram a few years later. These Atlantic sides are essential listening for Roy, and they're amazing little records that show a previously under-recognized side of his career. The first 2 rare funk albums by Black Heat in one package! The group was one of the best funk acts to record for Atlantic during the 70s – and they've got a sound that's a mixture of New Orleans funk, African influences, and New York heavy jamming. The tracks are about 50% instrumental – and these are the best numbers, as they've got a tightly compressed groove, mixing choppy guitar, hot organ licks, and sweet sax solos into a very tight blend. Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $4.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Atlantic, 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Laura Branigan gets some help here on arrangements from Harold Faltermeyer – who makes things a bit funkier than you might expect – although still very much in the kind of poppy style he used famously on some big 80s soundtracks! The mode works well for Laura – whose approach is always on the soulful side of pop, but still filled here with all the sense of drama that made Branigan huge on the charts at the time. Titles include "Heart", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "The Lucky One", "Self Control", and "Satisfaction". Titles include "The Lucky One (John Robie mix)", "The Lucky One (Jack White mix)", "Self Control (12" version)", and "Satisfaction (special dance mix)". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny BristolBristol's Creme (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $22.99
An excellent smooth soul groover from Johnny Bristol! The album has Johnny stepping into a more sophisticated groove than he used on his early 70s albums for MGM – mixing together styles that sound a lot like those used by artists like Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware at the time, a mix of well-produced backings with just the right touch of strings, keyboards, and tight rhythms. Johnny's voice has a bit rootsier quality than you might be used to for this sort of album – which makes for an even more unique sound, especially on the mellower cuts. Tracks include "Do It To My Mind", "Have Yourself A Good Time Thinkin' Bout The Good Times", "You Turned Me On To Love", "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya", and "She Came Into My Life". Nice one! CD

Atlantic/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
Excellent smooth soul from Johnny Bristol – working here in territory that's a lot more sophisticated than his earlier work, in the same vein as smooth modern soul singers like Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, or Prince Phillip Mitchell! The album's got a sweet warm feel – and the richness of the songwriting and vocals make us wonder why Johnny wasn't a bigger star on his own – because each new track is a gem, and the album's got a quality level to match the best of the biggest names of the 70s! However, it's also gems like this that keep us digging through the history of soul music – looking under the surface of the big stars to find excellent work from "almost rans" like Johnny! Cuts include "Strangers In The Dark Corners", "I'm Waiting On Love", "When The Fire Is Burning", "If You Ever Need Somebody", "You Can't Have Love (Without Complications)", and "She's So Amazing". Atlantic/Collectables, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A Late Date from Ruth Brown – both in her 50s R&B years, and in the style of the work! The sound here isn't as rough and ready as on her famous singles – and the album's almost a jazz-based effort, done in a mellow, late nite mode with arrangements by Richard Wess – and a lovely, fluid style that we never knew Ruth had! There's still plenty of bluesy undercurrents, but the overall style is definitely more small club jazz – often in a torchy mode. Titles include "I Can Dream Can't I", "Why Don't You Do Right", "Bewitched", "It Could Happen To You", "We'll Be Together Again", "No One Ever Tells You", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". CD

✨✧ Dave BrubeckAll The Things We Are ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best Dave Brubeck albums from later years – and one of the hippest! The record is noteworthy for its pairing of Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz – the former a rising star at the time, influenced strongly by the latter in his roots – showcased here in some rare moments of Braxton straight-aheadness! Brubeck's contribution is heard most strongly on the album's extended trio "Jimmy Van Huesen Medley" – played by Dave with Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. But we're most partial to the saxophone tunes – Konitz playing a spare duet with Brubeck on "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", soloing with the group on "Like Someone In Love", duetting with Braxton on "All The Things You Are" – and stepping back to let Anthony play with Dave on a version of "In Your Own Sweet Way". Really great stuff throughout – and a unique Brubeck moment! CD

Dave BrubeckTruth Is Fallen/Two Generations Of Brubeck ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1972/1974. Used ... $8.99
Truth Is Fallen is a complicated orchestral work – with Brubeck's piano, and backing from both the Cincinnati Symphony and the rock group New Heavenly Blue! Two generations, four Brubecks – an all family affair from the early 70s! Patriarch Dave Brubeck leads the sons through some of Dave's fine original numbers, sitting at his acoustic piano with Darius Brubeck on electric piano, organ and more, Chris Brubeck on trombone and bass, and Danny Brubeck on drums – along with David Mason on guitar and some utility players. The effort is way better than you may be expecting, as the brood shows some truly surprising range on tracks that veer from wildly energetic and muscular, to slender and brooding, to tightly moving! An under-appreciated gem! Tracks include "Circadian Dysrhythmia", "Three To Get Ready", "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Unsquare Dance" (with some lightly funky bass), "The Holy One", "Call Of The Wild", "Knives" and "Tin Sink". CD

✨✧ Dave Brubeck with Gerry MulliganLast Set At Newport ... CD
Atlantic, 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A rare meeting of 2 modern talents from the 50s – joined together in one unique performance from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1971! The baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan's a nice contrast to the usual Brubeck alto of Paul Desmond – long-departed from Dave's combo by this time, but referenced strongly by Gerry in his fluid lines for the set, almost a solo culmination here of previous recorded duets with Desmond in earlier years. Tracks are all quite longish, and given that Dave's group here features Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums, there's a quality to the session that's a fait bit more rhythmic than before – pulsating strongly with forceful lines on Brubeck's piano, and an overall feel that's much more freewheeling than you'd expect! Album features 3 long tunes – "Blues For Newport", "Open The Gates", and "Take Five". CD

Atlantic, 1970. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet funky piano from the mighty Ray Bryant – one of his excellent albums for Atlantic Records, a label who really seemed to give him an extra push in the groove department! The record's got a nicely laidback sort of feel – core grooving from a trio that features Bryant on acoustic piano, Jimmy Johnson on drums, and Chuck Rainey on electric bass – the last of whom really makes things move along in a soul-stepping sort of way! The set also features a few bigger arrangements by Deodato and Arif Mardin – both of whom really get the spirit of the set – and Ray's got that floating keyboard feel firmly in place – with a heavy left hand on the rhythm, and a right hand that kicks and flicks the tunes all over the top, really making them dance with a lot of spirit. Titles include "Stick With It", "Hey Jude", "Let It Be", "Shake A Lady", "My Cherie Amour", and a great version of "Spinning Wheel". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Seminal sounds from Solomon Burke – and a record that already has the young singer hitting the full heights of his greatness! There's a vibe here that's unlike anything else – even any of Burke's heavy-hitting contemporaries on Atlantic Records – and the album's key proof that Solomon's easily one of the greatest soul singers who ever lived! His vocals have roots that go very deep, but the strength of his vocals also help bring a new focus to 60s soul as well – a raw power that so many others would try to emulate, yet maybe never hit as well as Burke. A number of cuts here are great originals penned by Solomon, and every number's a gem – with titles that include "Stupidity", "Words", "If You Need Me", "Home In Your Heart", "Tonight My Heart She Is Crying", "I Really Don't Want To Know", and "Send Me Some Loving". A really great 2-in-1 set that brings together 2 of Solomon Burke's later and rawer albums for Atlantic! Both records are darn hard to find on vinyl, and they're both perfect examples of the raw soul power that made Solomon one of the true greats of the 60s – way past the cliches and the hits, and past the weaker blusier sides of recent years. This is the stuff to get if you're curious about the man, as both albums have killer cuts that let Solomon hit the kind of heavy soul groove that made him one of the true soul inventors of the 60s! The set features 22 cuts in all – and titles include the famous breakbeat track "Get Out Of My Life Woman", plus "I Wish I Knew", "Party People", "Someone Is Watching", "Baby, Come On Home", "It's Been A Chance", "Shame On Me", and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye". Very hip material from vibesman Gary Burton – tunes recorded for Atlantic Records in the late 60s and early 70s, a label that allowed Burton a great chance to experiment in a range of different styles! Some tunes are very groovy, even a little bit funky – while others show more of the chromatic approach that Burton would develop even more strongly in later years, still played here with a nice sense of swing amidst the modern tones. Other players include Richard Tee on organ and piano, Steve Swallow on bass, Jerry Hahn and Eric Gale on guitars, Keith Jarrett on piano and electric piano, and Stephane Grappelli on violin – and in addition to vibes, Burton also plays piano, electric piano, and organ. Titles include "Vibrafinger", "Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place", "Coquette", "Throb", "Turn Of The Century", "Henninger Flats", "Hand Bags & Glad Rags", "Las Vegas Tango", "Some Echoes", "Daphne", "Fortune Smiles", and "Chega De Saudade". The first album by 80s dancefloor soul diva Jenny Burton – a gleaming, synthesizer and computer grooves laden effort that may have aged pretty quickly after it's initial release – but sounds pretty sweet today and stands out for its embrace of both ultra modern electro soul sounds and chart ready hooks! Jenny's can really belt out the soulful vocals, and the sounds put together by producer/one man band John Robie bring in elements of early hip hop and synthy pop funk – with drum machines, Moogs, synthesizers, keys, and guitar. A classic from Jenny Burton – only the singer's second album as a solo act, but already a set that has Jenny hitting on all burners! The mellow numbers are great – never sleepy or too commercial, but pushed into just the right blend of polish and soul – and the groovers have some electro touches that hint back and Burton's start working with John Robie – modes that are underdone here in ways that hold together a lot more strongly than the usual electro dancefloor cut. Some production is by Maurice Starr – and cuts include "Dancing For My Love", "Bad Habits", "Once In A Lifetime Love", "Load It Up", and "Love Runs Deeper Than Pride".
