Mali Music ... CD Honest Jons/Astralwerks, 2002. Used ...
That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the CD's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". Many years back, Brian Eno gave us a record called Music For Films – a set that came out during his initial run of Ambient recordings, showing us how strong his instrumental creations could be when and if applied to a cinematic mode! The tracks there were half imagined works for film – and those of us who loved Eno were always hoping that it would lead to more prominent scoring for the electrosonic genius. Turns out, that happened anyway – as this set of 17 tracks will attest – a rising Eno role in the film soundtrack world, served up on contributions from big productions and lesser-known gems. The set features work from films that include Heat, We Are As Gods, Trainspotting, Married To The Mob, Jubilee, Top Boy, Sebastiane, Hammerhead, Rams, Lovely Bones, Francis Bacon's Arena, and Cool World – a surprisingly rich array of material! An excellent collection of house tracks – old and new – selected and blended by Dimitri From Paris! The overall theme is an imaginary party at the Playboy Mansion – but from our personal experience, we can tell you that this set kicks a lot harder than the dancefloor at Hef's pad ever did! Dimitri takes off from the current ecstatic energy of the Parisian house scene, and the package is a totally stormin mix of 14 tracks that are all uptempo, all soulful, and all filled with the kind of hooks that will keep you on the floor all night long. Tracks include "Found A Cue" by Ashford & Simpson, "I'll Be There For You" by Sunburst Band, "Sweet Music" by Terry Hunter, "Motivation" by Atmosfear, "Outro Lugar" by Salome De Bahia, "Talking All That Jazz (Torti's old school mix)" by Stetsasonic, "Down To Love Town" by The Originals, "The Groove" by Astrojazz, "Reach Inside" by Bah Samba, "Wonderful Person" by Black Masses, and "Give Me Love" by Cerrone.
