A sweet SoCal groover from Cecil Lyde – recorded in LA in the early 80s, with a great mix of funky club and mellow soul modes! Cecil's got a great ear for the grittier side of California funk at the time – tunes that still use the heavy bass and keyboards of mainstream work from the period, but which manages to make the grooves come out with a lot more punch, and a heck of a lot of feeling – a bit like some of the best indie club that was still coming out of the New York underground. The ballads are great too – with a spacier, more laidback feel that shows a warmer, more seductive side of Cecil's vocals – one that balances nicely with the bolder sound of the funk numbers, in a way that almost reminds us of Bootsy in the late 70s, but a lot less polished overall! At a time when other blues musicians were fleshing things out a bit – sometimes adding in larger backings, horns, and a bit of electricity – Lightnin Hopkins hardly needed that at all, as the man's voice and guitar are more than enough to knock things out of the park! The legend of Teena Marie lives again, and in a really beautiful way – as John Morales serves up tunes that work together almost as a tribute to the memory of the lady – with these really fresh versions that seem to add a lot of majesty to the sound as well! These aren't easy remixes that just focus on the hooks – and instead, Morales strips the tunes down and builds them up from the core – sometimes adding elements that were removed from the original versions that were issued, or bringing in his own touches in ways that make us wonder what sort of magic might have happened, had Motown let John into the studio to produce some of her classic albums. An excellent album of hard-rolling piano – part R&B, part blues, and part jazz, some of the incredible work of pianist Lloyd Glenn, a heavy handed groover from the 50s. We're not sure, but we think the album may include work that Glenn recorded for Aladdin, issued here under an Imperial label. The tracks are all short, with a rolling piano groove that's part Texas, part New Orleans. The assortment of players varies from grouping to grouping, and although Miles' trumpet is in the groups, there's also a stronger focus on the ensemble work on a number of the tunes. Other players include JJ Johnson, Sahib Shihab, Kai Winding, Cecil Payne, Tadd Dameron, Fats Navarro, Stan Getz, and Art Blakey – and the CD features 23 titles that include "Good Bait", "Woody N You", "Bean A Re Bop", "John's Delight", "What's New", "Heaven's Doors Are Open", "Focus", "Phantomesque", "For Europeans Only", and "Big Dog". A great little album from Teena Marie – one that's dedicated to the late Minnie Riperton (who'd passed during the previous year), and which is produced by Riperton's husband/collaborator Richard Rudolph. Teena's got more than a few of Minnie's tricks up her sleeve on the best cuts, singing in a smooth sweet soulful style that makes for some of her best vocals on record at the time. Evans, Evans and Krasno continue their groovy update of the classic B-3 organ trio lineup of drums, guitar and organ with another dose of tasty fat jazzy flavors, recorded live on tour. With all the raw energy and deep soulful funk you'd expect from a Soulive show, this set cooks nicely from start to finish, whether it's the hard funk of "Aladdin", bubbling wah wah grooves of "El Ron", jazzy swing of "Turn It Out" or the slow burning blues of "Lenny". 9 nicely stretched out tracks in all!
