Third WorldJourney To Addis ... LP
Island, 1978. Near Mint- ... $14.99
It may be commercial reggae, but the strength of the group's version of "Now That We Found Love" really pushed them over the top! That track's the real winner here – a smooth modern soul number with just a slight hint of Kingston, grooving away in a crossover style that we still really dig. Other tracks include "Journey To Addis", "One Cold Vibe", "Cold Sweat", and "African Woman". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing, in fantastic shape, with inner sleeve and promo stamp.)

✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Vol 8 – Swinging Addis 1969-1974 ... CD
Buda (France), Late 60s-Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest of the Ethopiques series! Like the best volumes in this series, this 8th one features some killer tunes with a hard soul approach – recorded in Ethiopia, but clearly influenced by the American funk of the late 60s and early 70s! The arrangements are mad mad mad – with plenty of incredible guitar work, tight bass-driven rhythms, and a screaming funk sound that makes the CD feel like a pile of funky 45s done in a language you can't understand! Includes work by Girma Beyene, Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete, Lemma Demissew, and Samuel Belay. Essentially funky! CD

✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 20 – Either/Orchestra Live In Addis ... CD
Buda (France), 2005. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazingly great set from Either/Orchestra – easily their finest album ever, and a wicked batch of Ethiopian funk! The set's a very faithful homage to the best Ethiopian styles of the 70s – with lots of echoes of the generation of Mulatu, who also makes a guest appearance himself on the album! Bits of Afro Funk come into play with more complicated jazz – making for a really unique approach to the music that stays faithful to its roots, but also somehow extrapolates the best elements and pulls them even more strongly forward. Features percussion by Mulatu, tenor sax by Getachew Mekurya, and vocals by Bahta Gebre-Heywet, Michael Belayneh, and Tsendia Gebre-Marqos. 2CD set includes the tracks "Soul Tezeta", "Amlak Abet Abet", "Muziqawi Silt", "Yezemed Yebada", "Eyeye", "Embi Ba", "Shellela", "Bati", "Feger Aydelem Wey", and "Keset Eswa Betcha". Almost a tribute to the sound of the Ethiopiques series – played with some of its key stars from older years! CD

✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 15 – Jump To Addis ... CD
Buda (France), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Another striking volume in the always-great Ethiopiques series – this one a recent concert, done in honor of, and in the style of, the music on the previous volumes! The set was recorded in Addis Ababa in 2001, and is filled with some really great rhythms, snakey grooves, and some ultra-cool sax work that really sets a great tone for the album. Most tracks have vocals, either by solo singers or ensembles – trading back and forth in a call/response style that also adds a lot to the evocative feel of the record. Titles include "Bati", "Segota 1", "Segota 2", "Koko", "Belomi Benna", "Medo Hane", and "Ambassel". CD

Kevin Fingier CollectiveEl Sonido De Fingier Records ... CD
Fingier/Acid Jazz (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A really cool collection of cuts that were originally issued as 7" singles in recent years, but which work perfectly together here as a full length set that introduces the world to the deeply funky talents of Kevin Finigier! Kevin hails from Argentina, but has a deep love of American soul and funk, particularly the 60s variant that was big in the UK mod scene – and here, he serves up some wicked grooves that may well be some of the best contemporary work in this mode we've heard for years! The production is nice and gritty – really back at the level of the indie funky 45 scene from back in the day – and the set mixes instrumental numbers that have a wicked sharp explosion of sounds with some heavy vocal tracks that are equally nice. The Kevin Fingier Collective deliver the cuts "Addis Ababa", "Sunglasses After Dark", "El Basement", "Latin Dynamite", and "Cocktail De Medianoche" – and other tracks include "I Love Without A Love" by Jo Ann Hamilton, "Why Don't You Go Home" by Diane Ward, "Um Brilho Novo" by Josi Dias, "Kairo Bancou Moulu" by Abdoulaye Badiane, and "Don't Wanna Cry No More" by Gerri Granger. Keith HudsonPick A Dub (expanded edition) ... CD
17 North Parade, 1974. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
The crowning achievement of the legendary Keith Hudson – a landmark album of instrumental dub that started out in very small circulation, but soon grew to become one of the most important albums of the genre! The sound here is spare, stark, and simple – but in the best way possible – as Hudson takes the music right down to its core, yet seems to create even more powerful flow in the process – revising the 60s Jamaican love of American soul into a more cosmic mode for the next decade – but all with a raw approach that makes each element come across with a great deal of focus. Titles include "Black Heart", "Pick A Dub", "Don't Move", "Blood Brother", "Michael Talbot Affair", "In The Rain", and "Satia". Also comes with the bonus related Pick A Vocal album – with vocals by Agustus Pablo, Horace Andy, and Delroy Wilson – alongside some more instrumental tunes. Tracks include "Still Water", "Addis Ababa", "Fight On Fight On", "I'm All Right", "Depth Charge", and "Don't Think About Me". CD

✨✧ Mulatu/HeliocentricsInspiration Information Vol 3 ... LP
Strut (UK), 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunner of a joint effort from Ethio jazz funk visionary Mulatu Astatke and psych funk genre-busting combo the Heliocentrics – a record we had the highest hopes for and still find wildly above and beyond our loftiest expectations! The collective touch on some classic Mulatu compositions, but the bulk of the material here is brand new, and purely collaborative – if you know the Helioecentrics or you know Mulatu, you can clearly hear what each bring to the table – and it works together brilliantly! There's often a gritty funk bottom end, the best drums and percussion, fat electric bass lines underneath Ethio jazz inspired sax, trumpet, trombone and flute – swirling psychedelic flourishes with theremin and other effects that never take away from the groove. Mulatu's on vibes, percussion, Wurlitzer, drums and keyboards – and his compositions and the Helios trade back and forth throughout the set. There's some additional Ethiopian instrumentation and atmospheric vocals in the mix on some tunes, and more of an astral, avant funk vibe on others, but there's always a brilliant confluence of styles. Bottom line, the album is everything we wanted it to be and more – this will undoubtedly be favorite for years to come! Titles include "Masenqo", "Cha Cha", "Addis Black Widow", "Mulatu", "Blue Nile", "Esketa Dance", "Chik Chikka", "Live From Tiger Lounge", "Chinese New Year", "Phantom Of The Panther", "Dewel"., "Fire In The Zoo", "An Epic Story" and "Anglo Ethio Suite". A contemporary set, but one that comes across with a very vintage vibe – one that really hearkens back to the best underground work on the Kingston scene at the end of the 70s! The production is fuller than some of those records, but still comes across with a classic-styled warmth – especially given that most numbers feature melodica lines from Addis Pablo, who really carries on the tradition of the instrument in dub, as first started by his father Augustus Pablo many years back! Jah Bami provides vocals on most tracks – and titles include "Selassie I Wisdom", "Far East Median", "Harar Melody", "Jah Alone", "Eastern Acoustic", "Acoustic Dub", "Selassie I Wisdom Dub", and "Jah Chant Dub". Trojan (UK), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real moment of righteous power from Lee Scratch Perry – as you might expect from the image on the cover – clearly indicating a strong sense of pride and identity that also tracks with the 70s shift in Jamaican music too! Lee's the producer here, but also extends full creative control throughout – which makes the album's mix of vocal and instrumental tracks feel much more like some of the unified albums from the Black Ark era, than previous Trojan packages which usually just culled together previous singles. The album's got lots of instrumentals billed to The Upsetters – including "Move Me", "Surplus"," Go Slow", "Not Guilty", "Long Sentence", and "Bad Luck" – and other titles include "Do Your Thing" by Dave Barker, "Well Dread (version 3)" by Addis Ababa Children, "Isn't It Wrong" by The Hurricanes, and "Place Called Africa (version 3)" by Winston Prince. ✨✧ John AddisonTom Jones ... CD
MGM/Kritzerland, 1963. Used ... $13.99
A period score, but one with plenty of groovy touches – a masterpiece of 60s film scoring from the great John Addison! Addison's music for the famous Tony Richardson version of Tom Jones is every bit as playful as the images on the screen – with only marginal aesthetics of the period of the story, and instead lots of romping melodies, carried out on horn parts, percussive passages, and even some cool harpsichord bits. Most of the tunes move quite quickly – as does the action on screen – and titles include "Sylvan Misadventures", "Ladies Are Irresistible", "Love Theme From Tom Jones", "Wine & Women", "If He Swing By The String", and "The Squire Steps In". CD features 34 tracks in all – the full original album, plus lots more music from the film! CD

John AddisonTorn Curtain – Original Sound Track Album ... CD
Varese, 1966. Used ... $12.99
From what we remember about the story of this film, the original score was supposedly written by Bernard Herrman, then discarded – although we're not sure if that story's actually true. Whatever the case, John Addison does a surprisingly nice job with this one – and his music for the film is one of the better things about this oft-forgettable cold war thriller. The main theme has a nice dark little melody – one that shows up in the better numbers on the album – and although the overall approach is dramatic, it's handled with a rare flourish that makes it stand alone fine away from the film. Titles include "Premonitions Of Trouble", "Michael & Sarah", "Escape On The Bus", "Pi Bus Theme Variations", "Sarah Alone", and "Love Theme From Torn Curtain", sung by the Johnny Mann Singers. CD

Jon FaddisInto The Faddisphere ... CD
Epic, 1989. Used ... $3.99 5.99
A bold and original statement from trumpeter Jon Faddis – a player who worked on countless large group and studio sessions over the years, but who rarely got to record as a leader! This set may well be one of Faddis' most jazz-based outings – as it features a stripped-down quartet with Rene Rosnes on piano, and an open, airy sound that offers Jon plenty of room to blow. His trumpet still has that pinched and blasting style learned from Dizzy Gillespie – but also soars around nicely with the lively rhythms of the tunes. Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very unusual pairing of players – pianist Oscar Peterson and trumpeter John Faddis, both working here without any other accompaniment! Peterson's no stranger to the duet format, but it's rare to hear Faddis in such a setting – especially considering how many large and studio groups he worked in over the years. And in a record like this, you can really hear the full range of his trumpet talents – opened up, unadorned, and handled with great creative energy on the album's long, open-ended tracks. Faddis is someone we always love, but he really surprises us here with a range of different voices on the trumpet – qualities that might not be brought to the forefront as easily in any other setting. Early Atlantic Records work from the great Mose Allison – easily one of the most unique jazz artists of his time! Most started out as a pianist with a nicely bluesy vibe, but soon added in this excellent vocal approach that was maybe part New Orleans, part New York hipster – delivered here with a vibe that follows nicely from his earlier recordings for Columbia and Prestige Records! The sound is nice and stripped-down – none of the larger arrangements that Mose would soon use on Atlantic – and the set features accompaniment from Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. A really pivotal album from the great Art Farmer – a late 50s session that has him finding that sense of tone and timing that would dominate his work in years to come! Art was already great by the time of this set, but he's also got maybe a more personal, almost poetic vibe at times – starting to realize that the space between the notes is as important as the notes themselves, while still maybe holding onto a slight bit of the bite of his earliest recordings too. The group is a very well-matched trio of easygoing modernists – Hank Jones on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – on titles that include "Too Late Now", "Back In The Cage", "And Now", "Stablemates", "Earth", and "Nita". One of Art Farmer's pivotal mid 50s sides – recorded in the company of altoist Gigi Gryce, a great player and a budding young arranger who helped Farmer really formulate the best side of his sound! The tracks are lyrically modern – but still have a nice dose of soul in them – a wonderful blend that really sets the stage for the move that Art was making away from earlier trumpeters in jazz – into that hip territory that was neither too cool, nor too overblown – and which would almost be known as "Farmer-like" in years to come! The album features Gryce and Farmer in 2 different groups – one with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – the other with Freddie Redd on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Both numbers are Ellington classics – "C Jam Blues" and "Perdido" – showcasing Mingus' late fascination with the Duke, but in a way that still preserves all of the modern inventions of his own earlier work. As on much of the best Mingus albums from the time, there's a real focus on the strengths of the soloists here – players who include Roland Kirk on tenor and stritch, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Jon Faddis on trumpet, John Handy on alto and tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, and Don Pullen on piano – all of whom really play with some sharp edges and bold notes! This great expanded version features more very long tracks – over 70 minutes of unreleased music, with versions of "Celia", "Big Alice", "Fables Of Faubus", and "Peggy's Blue Skylight" – as well as Mingus' introduction of the music. Fantastic lost work from Charles Mingus, from a very under-recorded time in his life – the same period in which he gave the world the seminal album Let My Children Hear Music! The setting's a live one – and as on some of Mingus' superb 60s concert sessions, there's a force and fire here that really surpasses the group's energy in the studio – long tracks that are filled with brilliant solo work, and handled by a sextet that includes Bobby Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Jon Faddis on trumpet, John Foster on piano, and Roy Brooks on drums – a group with just the kind of young, imaginative horn players that Mingus always used to create a special sort of fire. Titles include the 19 minute "The Man Who Never Sleeps", the 30 minute "Mind Readers Convention In Milano", a 25 minute version of "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", and a 20 minute take on "Noddin Ya Head Blue" – plus a 35 minute jam on "Fables Of Faubus" and the shorter "Pops". William SalterIt Is So Beautiful To Be ... LP
Marlin, 1977. Near Mint- ... $9.99 14.99
Sophisticated soul from William Salter – a lost treasure from the Ralph MacDonald camp at the end of the 70s, and a vocalist that we only know from this one obscure album! MacDonald produced the set with William Eaton – who also did the arrangements, as he did on some of Ralph's own work – and Salter sings lead in a style that's part modern soul, part adult – working with some nice jazzy touches on the best cuts. The album's got work from jazzers like Bob James, Eddie Daniels, and Jon Faddis – plus backup vocals from Patti Austin and Valerie Simpson – and the best tracks groove along at midtempo pace with a sunny kind of finish. There's a few clunkers on here, but the good cuts more than make up for them – and titles include "You Got Style", "It Is So Beautiful To Be", "Three Days Of Flowers", "Lena", and "When You Smile" – a nice jazzy stepping tune! A great tribute to Lalo's classic years with Dizzy Gillespie – performed by himself and the WDR Big Band, with players that include Jon Faddis, Paquito D'Rivera, Alex Acuna, and Markus Stockhausen. Faddis handles most of the trumpet parts, and with a style that's different enough from Diz to open the work up nicely – yet still hearken back to the sweet and Latinesque style of the early 60s Gillespie group that included Schifrin. A nice session by one of the most unique guitarists in jazz – all done up in a CTI style, with production and arrangements by Bob James that give the record a nice little electric finish! We always loved Gabor's guitar on his 60s recordings, and this set is one of the first to really strongly push him into the sound of the 70s – working with James, Eric Gale, and Jon Faddis to craft some soulful grooves that show that Szabo's style would keep on evolving! Tatsuro YamashitaCircus Town ... LP
RCA/BMG (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Wicked soul from 70s Japanese singer Tatsuro Yamashita – recorded in New York and LA, and done with some excellent backings that rank with the best American soul from the time! The New York side was produced and arranged by Charlie Calello – who brings in some great jazzy moments to the set, using Pat Rebillot, Randy Brecker, and Jon Faddis to play on the tunes – almost giving the record a Crusaders-ish groove at times. The LA side was arranged by Tatsuro himself – and has a style that's similar, but with more backing vocals that slide in and out of the mellow Free Soul-styled rhythms. There's some really great numbers on the set, even if you can't understand the Japanese lyrics – and titles include "Windy Lady", "Circus Town", "Minnie", "Last Step", and "City Way". Pure genius from the B Baker Chocolate Company – a set that's equal parts fusion and soul, held together by these rich arrangements that really send the whole thing home! The album's never too slick, yet has a sense of perfection that matches some of the best soulful fusion dates at Blue Note or Fantasy in the mid 70s – a quality that's especially strong on the vocal tracks on the set – one of which features Lew Kirton in the lead! The players are all totally top-shelf – and include Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff on keyboards, John Faddis and Marvin Stamm on trumpets, and Jimmy Ponder on guitar – and the set's got a beautiful balance that few other records like this can match. Lew Kirton sings on "It's Where You're Coming From", and "Dreamer" features Gene Scott – and instrumental tracks include the funky classic "Snowblower", plus "Carousel" and "Spirit Level". They're not kidding about the title – because the album's one of Ruby Braff's most swingin from the time – a sharp-edged quartet session that's filled with well-blown notes! Ruby's in the lead on all numbers on trumpet – getting support from Johnny Guarnieri on piano, Walter Page on bass, and Bobby Donaldson on drums – and the sound is a bit more rough than some of Braff's other albums of the time – not so sweetly-trilling, and we mean that in a good way! More straight ahead than some of Charles' other work from the time – most of which is fairly modernist – but still a strong batch of tracks, and one that has a lot more edge than the work of Lionel Hampton, to whom it was recorded as a "salute". An essential Art Farmer session from the mid 50s – and a magnificent batch of hardbop tracks that we'd rank with some of our favorite work on Blue Note! The group is incredibly strong – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all coming together with a magical in-the-pocket groove that persists on nearly every track. Farmer's still at a formative stage here – and he's going for a much harder sound than usual, with an excellent tone and extremely well calculated solos throughout. Mobley's at his best from this period, and his playing puts this session more in the tightly executed Blue Note camp (ala some of the Horace Silver late 50s recordings), than it does the Prestige/New Jazz blowing session mode. An all-instrumental set from Mose Allison – one that drops out his familiar jazz vocals, and really brings a nice focus to his energy on the keys of the piano! Given that Mose really got his start as a sideman in other combos during the 50s, the selection's no surprise – and if you've only heard Allison's better-known numbers with singing, you'll really be floored here at his skills as an instrumentalist – particularly in the way he manages to play the piano with deep-down roots, yet also hit some stunningly modern tones as well! Accompaniment is by Addison Farmer on bass, plus either Ronnie Free or Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Dinner On The Ground", "Crepuscular Air", "Mule", "Creek Bank", "Town", "Devil In The Cane Field", "The Minstrels", "Moon & Cypress", "Carnival", and "Mojo Woman". United Artists, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal session as a leader by the young Art Farmer – recorded for United Artists, and a great set of tight lyrical tunes, played by Farmer in his sparkling style – in a group along with Benny Golson on tenor and Bill Evans on piano. Evans is a special treat here, as the 1958 session was recorded at a time when he was making a fair bit of appearances in various rhythm sections for horn players (like Miles Davis) – and although this role in Evans' career was a short one, it yielded some amazingly beautiful moments, as you'll hear on this album. Art's brother Addison plays bass, and Dave Bailey rounds out the group on drums. Tracks include "Cold Breeze", "Mox Nix", "Jubilation", and "Fair Weather". LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant pairing from the 50s hardbop years at Prestige – the tight trombone of Bennie Green, and the sweet trumpet of Art Farmer – both captured here at an early point when they had plenty of edge! The match is a great one – given the trumpet-like phrasing that often made Green stand apart from some of his contemporaries – and at some level, Bennie's even more punctuated, and with more bite than Farmer – leaving Art to warm things up a bit with his mighty fluid solos! Rhythms are nice and tight – just what both players need – and the group features Cliff Smalls on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – on titles that include "Skycoach", "Let's Stretch", "Cliff Dweller", "My Blue Heaven", and "Gone With The Wind". Quite an unusual album from Grant Green – a record that's quite different than his earlier records for Blue Note, but still pretty darn great overall! Grant's working here in a large group – Kudu style – with arrangements by David Matthews, but a sound that's still pretty lean overall! There's a fair bit of great players in the lineup – including Jon Faddis on trumpet, Hubert Laws on flute, and Joe Farrell on tenor – and the horns soar out nicely to set the scene over some tightly stepping backings – all served up with plenty of room for Grant to solo spaciously on guitar! The title track – "The Main Attraction" – is nearly 20 minutes long – and the other two tracks, "Creature" and "Future Feature", both approach the 10 minute mark themselves! LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic record – one of the best jazz vocal records of the 80s, and a real bright spot in an often dim decade for jazz! The set is Carmen Lundy's debut – and it's a masterful self-produced effort that immediately put her in the ranks of the ultra-hip, ultra-soulful jazz crowd – singers like Betty Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater, both of whom took a lot longer to sound this good than Carmen! The whole thing's great – the kind of righteous vocal set that few singer ever seem to make this well – and titles include some great originals like "Good Morning Kiss", "Time is Love", and "Perfect Stranger" – plus excellent versions of "Dindi", "Love For Sale", and "The Lamp Is Low". ✨✧ Gil EvansListen To The Silence – Live At The Public Theater ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1980. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Gil Evans plays an electric grand piano and is joined by a rather large set of musicians who include Masabumi Kikuchi on a variety of synthesizers, Billy Cobham on drums, Hammiet Bluiett and Arthur Blythe on saxes, Hannibal Marvin Peterson and Jon Faddis on trumpet, and George Lewis on trombone – a wide range of underground talents that show that Evans was still working with the best of the left field, even late in his career. This 2CD set brings together both of the original albums in the series – and tracks include some Evans originals – "Anita's Dance", "Jelly Rolls", "Alyrio", and "Variations On The Misery", plus a version ofJimi Hendrix's "Up From The Skies". Other tracks include "Listen To The Slience", "Stone Free", "Sirhan's Blues", and "Zee Zee". CD

✨✧ Art FarmerModern Art ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ...
Originally recorded for United Artists, but reissued here by Blue Note. CD

✨✧ Art Farmer/Benny GolsonMeet The Jazztet ... CD
Argo/Chess, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Landmark work by one of the greatest jazz outfits of the early 60s! Art Farmer and Benny Golson were both known as well-composed players during the 50s – strongly soulful, but often with a fine sense of arrangement that usually tended towards the lyrical side of things. With this group, though, they turned that approach towards a heavier sounding style of jazz – tightly stepping soul jazz, in the manner that was being explored at the time by Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, and others – presented by Farmer and Golson with a bit more groove and a wonderful kick at the bottom! This album's the first the group cut together – and apart from trumpet by Farmer and tenor by Golson, it also features Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Addison Farmer (brother of Art) on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. Includes the massive original recording of "Killer Joe", which went onto become one of the most recorded jazz standards ever, plus the tracks "Blues March", "Mox Nix", "Park Avenue Petite", and "I Remember Clifford". Perfect tone, perfect groove, and a perfect sound all the way through! CD

✨✧ Jerry FieldingGauntlet – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully jazzy soundtrack – one of our favorite Jerry Fielding film scores of the 70s, thanks to key solo work from Art Pepper on alto and Jon Faddis on trumpet! The music is far deeper than you might expect for the Clint Eastwood action film setting – funky enough in the best parts, but also with a sensitivity that gets past the usual cop/crime grooves – making for a really rich record that's almost as pleasing from a jazz perspective as it is from a funk soundtrack perspective too! The album sports a great Frank Frazetta cover – and titles include "The Pickup", "Bleak Bad Big City Dawn", "The Box Car Incident", "The Delivery", "The Black Sedan", and "Manipulation On The Center Divider". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieLost Recordings – Live At Singer Concert Hall 1973 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lost Recordings (France), 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very cool live material from Dizzy Gillespie – a set that has him working in that groovy blend of Latin with slight funky currents that we love on his best albums from the 70s! The setting here is very open and free, with very extended tracks that really let the rhythms build before the solos come in – a great flow from a quintet that features Mike Longo on piano, Al Gafa on guitar, Earl May on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – all players who match that special spark and energy that Dizzy brings to the proceedings! Many tracks feature a short spoken announcement, with that wit that Gillespie always has on the stage – and Jon Faddis plays guest trumpet on two tracks as well. Titles include the long cuts "Sunshine", "Brother K", "Ole For The Gypsies", "The Truth", "Manteca", and "The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel Legrand & CoLe Jazz Grand ... LP
Gryphon, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful session of straight jazz work by Michel Legrand – a larger group outing that's one of the few albums he ever cut in this style! The set has all the warmth and imagination of Legrand's best jazzy soundtrack work – strong themes, bold statements, and a sense of personal investment that comes through even in a larger ensemble – yet the work here is also delivered with even more freedom for solo work than Legrand's film scores, with plenty of longer exploratory passages that showcase the takents of key soloists like Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, and Jon Faddis. Most of the album's first side features an extended track suite entitled "Southern Routes" played by a big band – and side two features shorter titles played by a septet, with titles that include "La Pasionaria", "Malagan Stew", "Iberia Nova", and "Basquette". ✨✧ Carmen LundyGood Morning Kiss ... LP
Blackhawk, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic record – one of the best jazz vocal records of the 80s, and a real bright spot in an otherwise dim decade! The set is Carmen's debut – and it's a masterful self-produced effort that immediately put her in the ranks of the ultra-hip, ultra-soulful jazz crowd – singers like Betty Carter and Dee Dee Bridgewater, both of whom took a lot longer to sound this good than Carmen! The record is set in a perfect setting – Carmen working closely with musicians headed up by brother Curtis on bass, and including soulful players like Bobby Watson, Rene McLean, Cecil Bridgewater, Jon Faddis, and Harry Whitaker. ✨✧ Nucleus with Ian CarrUnder The Sun ... LP
Vertigo (UK), 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Soaring sounds from Nucleus – one of the few UK jazz/rock combos from the start of the 70s who really found a way to keep growing and changing as the years moved on! Here, the lineup is nice and large – the mighty trumpet of Ian Carr in the lead, next to keyboards from both Gordon Beck and Geoff Castle, both of whom bring plenty of Fender Rhodes into play – with more work from Jocelyn Pitchen and Ken Shaw on guitars, and Bob Bertles on alto, baritone, bass clarinet, and flute – really great reedwork that's always a great match for Carr's energy. There's some really great drums on the set from Bryan Spring, which make the best tracks quite funky – and titles include "In Procession", "The Addison Trip", "Pastoral Graffiti", "New Life", and "A Taste Of Sasparilla". ✨✧ Players AssociationPlayers Association/Turn The Music Up! ... CD
Vanguard/Ace (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of gems from The Players Association – back to back on a single CD! First up is the fantastic first album from The Players Association – a group who may well have gotten their name for the great jazzy musicians in their lineup! Players Association are best known for their disco grooves, but they've got a core sense of instrumentation that's really a cut above – with strong leadership from jazzman Chris Hills – who plays drums, guitar, and keyboards – and other players who include Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, Bob Mover on alto and soprano, Jon Faddis on trumpet, and Mike Mandell on keyboards! Ray Mantilla and Buddy Williams add in some great percussion to the mix – which furthers the spontaneous, jazzy vibe of some of the tunes – and titles includes the funky cut "I Like It", which has a nice break in the beginning, plus the tracks "Let's Groove", "Hustlin", "Moon In Pisces", and a sweet cover of "For The Love Of You". Turn The Music Up is wonderful work from The Players Association – a group who were equal parts jazz funk and equal parts 70s club – with a vibe that's maybe like The Blackbyrds or other Fantasy Records acts at their best! The mighty Chris Hills is at the helm – and the record is overflowing with top-shelf talent from the jazz side of the spectrum – work by Bob Berg on tenor, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Bob Mover on alto – all with room to solo, and really helping bring a musical maturity to the record that other disco records never seem to have! Titles include "Everybody Dance", "Ride The Groove", "The Closer I Get To You", and "I Wish". CD

Savoy/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1956/1957. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of key 50s work from saxophonist Sahib Shihab – a wealth of small group recordings made in the US before leaving for greater fame overseas! First up is material from the rare Savoy album Night People – an obscure session issued under the leadership of bassit Mort Herbert – but one that features some great work from Sahib throughout! The session's based mostly around original compositions from Herbert – playful numbers that are handled by two different groups – one that includes Shihab, Joe Wilder, Bobby Jaspar, and Kenny Clarke; another that features Shihab and Clarke with trumpeter Don Stratton and pianist Ronnie Ball. Much of the work here is in the Savoy mode of the time – tight on the head, but lots of room for solo voicings – always a treat with Sahib in a set like this! Titles include "Son Of The Preacher", "Blues For Fred & Ray", "Mitch's Carol", "Swiss Movement", and "Night People". Another big chunk of work on the set is from Jazz Sahib – an album that's broken into two different groups. Both have Sahib playing with Phil Woods on alto and Benny Golson on tenor, but one rhythm section is Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and the other is Bill Evans on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Taylor again on drums. Tracks are long, and mostly have a hardbop sort of approach – but there's also a slight undercurrent of mysticism too, of the sort that would show up more strongly in Sahib's later work. Titles include "Ballad To The East", "Jamila", "Le Sneak", and "The Moors". Next up is half of the album The Jazz We Heard Last Summer – an almost-overlooked session on Savoy, but a great one, and a record that really carries that raw blowing session energy of the best work on Prestige at the time! The work here is from side one of the album – which features a killer lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on baritone, Clifford Jordan on tenor, and John Jenkins on alto – all blowing in the front line with rhythm from the trio of Hank Jones on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Danny Richmond on drums. Titles include "SMTWTFSS Blues", "Rockaway", and "The Things We Did Last Summer". Additional material on the 2CD set includes "Hum Bug" and "Southern Exposure" – from an Epic album titled After Hours Jazz – plus "Sugar Dugar" from the Jazz Is Bursting Out All Over album on Savoy – and the bonus tracks "Lo Ba" and "Ba Dut Du Dat", also recorded for Savoy. Strata East, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of a few large group sessions recorded by Charles Tolliver during his years on Strata East – and an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Tolliver's previous Music Inc big band album for Strata, released 5 years before – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Recent record from jazz percussionist Babatunde, and one that has a great lineup of famous guests, like Jon Faddis, Charnett Moffet, Hilton Ruiz, and Kenny Barron. The CD's on a small California label, and is a bit of a low-budget affair. But that doesn't keep it from being a strong session, thanks in part to Babatunde's creative vision, and the talents of the supporting players. The music is fairly straight ahead, but played with a bit of a soul jazz groove, and with lots of room for solos. Cuts include "As Me Now", "Father Of Dreams", "Little Girls", and "Level Of Intent". Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great later issue of two classic Prestige hardbop albums from the 50s! First up is Two Trumpets – one of those wonderful late 50s Prestige Records blowing sessions that really let individual players have lots of the right sort of space to find their own voice alongside each other! Byrd and Farmer are both young here, and mighty sharp in their sounds – already quite distinct from each other in phrasing, and a great choice as soloists to illuminate in a setting like this. The rest of the group features Jackie McLean on alto – getting in some great solos too – plus Barry Harris on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and the great Art Taylor on drums. Byrd's bite is a great counterpart to the lyricism of Farmer – and titles include "Contour", "Round Midnight", "The Third", and "Dig". Next is Three Trumpets – an excellent follow-up to the legendary Two Trumpets session on Prestige – and even rarer than that one! The lineup features Farmer, Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman on the horns in the title – with hip rhythm from Hod O'Brien on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include "Diffusion Of Beauty", "You Gotta Dig It To Dig It", "Who's Who", and "Palm Court Alley". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Farmer & Gigi GryceComplete Prestige Recordings 1954 to 1955 (When Farmer Met Gryce/Art Farmer Quintet) ... CD
Prestige/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal modern jazz from Art Farmer & Gigi Gryce – a pair of records the players recorded together on Prestige Records in the mid 50s! First up is When Farmer Met Gryce – one of Art Farmer's pivotal mid 50s sides – recorded in the company of altoist Gigi Gryce, a great player and a budding young arranger who helped Farmer really formulate the best side of his sound! Titles include "Social Call", "Capri", "Deltitnu", "Stupendous Lee", and "Blue Concept". Art Farmer Quintet has Farmer playing in a quintet (natch!), with able accompaniment from Gigi Gryce, a young newcomer at this point, with a post-bop complication to his style that was not to dissimilar from Farmer's. Gryce's mode is perhaps a bit more academic than Farmer's, but Art's lyricism offsets that tendency nicely, and the pair work together in a mode that's every bit as pleasing as Gigi's work with Donald Byrd. The set features some great tracks in sort of an exoticist hardbop mode – and titles include "Satellite", "Shabozz", "Sans Souci", and "Evening In Casablanca". CD
