Jack McDuffAnother Real Good'Un (32 Jazz) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1989. Used ... $4.99
A nice little album of soul jazz organ tracks by Jack McDuff, and proof that he was always still burning strong! Unlike other Hammond players, who got a bit sloppy in later years, McDuff always kept things interesting, and managed to come up with some creative arrangements and soulful solos that pushed his work way past the usual soul jazz bag. This set was recorded with Cecil and Ron Bridgewater, Houston Person, and Cecil Brooks III – and features a nice set of longish groovers like "Another Real Good'Un", "Rock Candy", "Off The Beaten Path", and "Summertime", which McDuff always does nicely. Bobby HutchersonVibe Wise (Good Bait/Color Schemes) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1984/1985. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
2 of the nicer Bobby Hutcherson albums of the past 20 years, put together back to back on another one of those nifty 32 Jazz CD packages dedicated to helping jazz fans today rediscover lost gems of the past. Both records have a nice spare straight-ahead jazz sound, which is a refreshing change after some of Hutcherson's forays into larger formats during the 70s. Good Bait features a group with George Cables, Ray Drummond, Philly Joe Jones, and Branford Marsalis – and includes the cuts "Love Samba", "Montgomery", "Israel", and "Good Bait". Color Schemes features Mulgrew Miller, John Heard, and Billy Higgins – and the record has a mix of tracks that includes "Never Let Me Go", "Recorda Me", Bemsha Swing", and "Whisper Not". Hutcherson's tone is amazing on both albums – and it's incredible to hear that even in his third decade of playing the vibes, he was still stretching his work to reach new levels, and lay down notes on the instrument that sound like nobody else! ✨✧ Woody ShawSolid ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Woody's last albums – a back to basics set, recorded with a group that include Kenny Garret on alto sax, Kenny Barron on piano, and guest guitar work on one track by Peter Leitch. The approach is straight modal hardbop – in the spirit of Woody's first recordings for Muse – and although his genius seems to have faltered a bit, his work here is still incredibly solid, much more so than most other trumpeters of his generation, and still expressed in a preference for easily grooving longer tracks. Titles include "Speak Low", "Solid", "There Will Never Be Another You", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and "The Woody Woodpecker Song". CD

Chris ConnorChris Connor Sings The George Gershwin Almanac Of Song (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 32 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Strike Up The Band" and "Summertime", done in different takes. CD

✨✧ Jon LucienI Am Now/Mind's Eye/Rashida ... CD
BMG (Germany), Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant stuff – all 3 of Jon Lucien's landmark RCA albums on one 2CD set! Lucien cut his best work for RCA – but sadly, the albums were under-discovered for years, and are only now recently getting credit as the soul jazz landmarks they've come to be! On these albums, Jon's style is a haunting mix of soul, jazz, and Latiny rhythms, blended together with beautiful arrangements, and airy, souful production. All 3 albums are great, and all different in their own way, shifting Lucien's unique musical vision through a host of different songs pulled from obscure sources, or written by Lucien himself. There's a total of 32 titles on the 2CD set – and tunes include "Would You Believe in Me", the spacey "Lady Love", and the tracks "Kuenda", "Satan", "Love Everlasting", "Ghetto Song", "Soul Chant", "When the Morning Comes", "Dindi", "Love For Sale", "Who Will Buy?", and "Prayer for Peace". ✨✧ Jimmy LyonsPush Pull ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons had a legendary run of performances on record with Cecil Taylor – but he sounds equally amazing here as a leader – given the space to really stretch out in a 3LP set that brings together a landmark live performance from 1978! Lyons works here with some lesser-known names – a quintet that includes Karen Borca on bassoon, Hayes Burnett on bass, Munner Bernard Fennell on cello, and Roger Blank on drums – but all players really catch the fire from his horn, and open up in a way that starts with loft jazz inspiration, then really soars to the stratosphere! The live setting of the album – recorded in a cinema – brings a really great quality of "space" to the overall production – and you can really feel Lyons and the group working together as their sounds and performance echo throughout the theater. Titles include the 32 minute "Mary Mary" – plus "Tortuga", "Breakout", "After You Left", and "Push Pull". CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsLevels & Degrees Of Light ... CD
Delmark, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although recorded early in the career of Muhal Richard Abrams, this brilliant LP shows the pianist/composer turning away from the stock jazz and studio work of earlier years – to develop into one of the richest talents to rise from the Chicago avant underground of the 60s! At the time of the recording, Abrams was the president of the recently-founded AACM – and for the session, he's surrounded himself with some of the best young talents from Chicago, including Thurman Barker, Anthony Braxton, Leroy Jenkins, and Maurice McIntyre – all of whom help to create a complicated web of colors, shapes, and sounds, that prove that the youthful energy of the underground scene was more than capable of crafting sophisticated modernist documents. The album features three long works – "Levels & Degrees Of Light", "The Bird Song", and "My Thoughts Are My Future". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyJump For Joy ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An interesting early side by Cannonball that captures him before he'd really found his voice – and when the folks at Mercury still didn't really know what to do with him. The record's a tightly arranged set of tracks from Duke Ellington's musical "Jump For Joy" – with arrangements by Bill Russo, and small group playing that includes Emmett Berry, Bill Evans, Barry Gabraith, Jimmy Cobb, and a small string section. The sound's actually quite haunting – and Cannon's alto solos remind us more of some of the best "with strings" soloing heard on Verve in the early 50s than they do his later soul jazz classics on Riverside or Capitol. That's ok with us, though – because the session's still got a lot to offer in that respect, and Cannonball handles the solos wonderfully! Titles include "Bli Blip", "Just Squeeze Me", "Nothin", and "The Tune Of The Hickory Stick". LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball AdderleyThings Are Getting Better ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... $4.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". CD

A seminal 70s set from the legendary Air trio – and one of their only non-American dates from the early years! The album was originally a Japanese-only album, but it's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – a sublime set that really has them working strongly in their AACM roots, yet also reaching for a new sound too – a beautiful balance between jazz generations, carried off perfectly by the trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on drums! Tracks are long, and extremely inventive – and titles include "Through A Keyhole Darkly", "Air Raid", and "Midnight Sun". CD

AirtoNatural Feelings ... CD
Buddah/Muzak (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
One of Airto's best albums ever – and one that we never tire of hearing! There's a sublime quality here that steps perfectly right off of the percussionist's groundbreaking work with Quarteto Novo! Airto's joined on this set by Hermeto Pascoal – also from the Quarteto Novo group – as well as wife Flora Purim, bassist Ron Carter, and the always-great Sivuca – who plays guitar on the record. There's a swirling blend of jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and free-thinking soul to the set – one that's never been captured so perfectly on other Airto albums – and which has a lean, clean sound that's simply beautiful. The overall sound is quite rootsy, without many fusion touches at all – and Hermeto's reed work really brings in a great edge to the whole session – one that makes the album differ a bit from much of the other Airto/Flora work of the time. Titles include a classic take on the tune "Bebe", plus "Andei", "Mixing (Misturada)", "The Tunnel", and "Frevo". CD

✨✧ AirtoSamba De Flora ... CD
Montuno/Soul Jazz (UK), 1988. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Airto records ever – a really overlooked record cut for the mostly-Latin Montuno label in the 80s! The album's quite spare, and almost more in a Latin mode at times – given the harder percussion on the set, and the firey recording style given to the set by Montuno – but it also echoes some of the great spare styles that Airto used in his first American recordings, too – the sessions he cut for Cobblestone/Buddah right at the start of the 70s. Airto plays a range of percussion instruments, and Flora's on the set adding in some vocals – and the record also features great keyboards from Jorge Dalto, whose sound really ties thigns together nicely. Includes the classic "Samba De Flora", plus "Yahna Amina", "El Fiasco", "Dedos", "La Puerta", "Parana", and "Latin Woman". CD

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandTales of A Courtesan (Oirantan) ... LP
RCA, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Toshiko Akiyoshi really took off as a jazz musician in the 70s – already a great pianist known for her bop-like dexterity in the 50s, a compelling soloist and songwriter with her modern sound in the 60s, and a hell of a talent at the helm of a series of amazing big band records with reedman Lew Tabackin! Akiyoshi emerges as a stunning composer, and a great arranger too – able to balance the individual solo voices of the members of the group, while also letting the whole thing open up and soar – bold colors that are cut through nicely by her own solo work in the set! In addition to saxes and flutes from Tabackin, the set also features more saxes from Gary Foster, Bill Perkins, and Dick Spencer – plus trombone from Bill Reichenbach and Britt Woman, and trumpets from Bobby Shew and Mike Price. All tunes are Akiyoshi originals – and titles include "Interlude", "Village", "Road Time Shuffle", and "Tales Of A Courtesan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lorez AlexandriaFor Swingers Only ... LP
Argo, 1963. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskridge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road". A&M, 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A whole new level of genius for Herb Alpert – a record that's light years away from his earlier work with the Tijuana Brass, and which has the trumpeter stepping strongly into the world of smooth jazzy fusion! The title track here went platinum the minute it was released – and became an end-of-the 70s instrumental anthem that seemed to drift out of speakers around the country. The rest of the album's pretty great too – built on the modes explored by Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, and other soulful fusion players of the 70s – but cast out with a bit more drama overall. Titles include the seminal jazz dance classic "Rotation" – plus "Rise", "Street Life", "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)", "1980", "Angelina", and "Love Is". CD

Vendemiaire/Digger's Digest (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Really fantastic work from Cossi Anatz – a 70s French group who play something they term as "jazz Afro-Occitan" – a wonderful hybrid of modes that's even more compelling than you might think! At some level, the record follows from some of the experiments of Jef Gilson along these lines, and maybe a bit like some of the famous MPS jazz-meets-world recordings – but the style is also more freewheeling and open, done with more of an influence from Free jazz at times – and with rhythms that almost point the way more towards 80s experiments of this nature, particularly some from the Don Cherry side of the spectrum. The group features Michel Marre on trumpet in the lead – clearly the lead creative force, as he also wrote all the songs – and the lineup also features Jean-Marc Padovani on soprano sax and tenor, plus electric and acoustic piano, drums, and two more percussionists. A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. 2 classics by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – back to back on one CD! At the time they were taking Paris by storm, the Art Ensemble recorded these brilliant albums – both of which are some of their strongest early work, far more well-formed than any of their individual expressions recorded earlier in Chicago! The CD features the group at their best – playing very tightly, but also with a sense of whimsy and imagination, and the kind of free-thinking exploration that informed a whole generation of jazz musicians, offering a different mode of expression than the spiritualism of the post-Coltrane years. Includes "A Brain For The Seine", a real classic by the band – plus "Jackson In Your House", "Get In Line", "Song for Charles", "Dexterity" and "Old Time Religion", and "Rock Out". CD

Edwin Astley/Tony CrombieInternational Detective/Man From Interpol ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A pair of cool British TV soundtracks – both of which feature an action jazz style to rival the best early work of Henry Mancini for the television screen! First up is lost spy soundtrack work from the British composer Edwin Astley – best known for his work on The Saint and Danger Man, but also sounding pretty darn great on the earlier program International Detective! The feel here is similar to some of Astley's better-known work – a more dramatic take on the crime jazz used on American TV in the late 50s – one that retains much of the instrumental elements of the sound, especially the well-placed use of saxes – but which also uses larger orchestrations to flesh out the music nicely, creating a stronger, more cinematic feel. The set features a total of 21 tracks from this short-lived show – and titles include "International Detective", "Murder Strip", "Theme For Larceny", "Night Patrol", "The Badge", "Manhunt", "Shock Tactics", "Murder Chase", and "Concerto In Law". Next is Man From Interpol – one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre". CD

Polydor, 1976. Very Good+ ... $16.99
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1970. Used ... $11.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Columbia/FTG, 1983. Used ... $9.99
An 80s soul classic from Philip Bailey – stepping out here from Earth Wind & Fire in a set that has him sparkling strongly as a solo act! The vocals still have that trademark Bailey sound – a wonderful range that's never overdone, and which seems to shine especially well on the mellow and midtempo tunes in the set! Production is by George Duke, who does a lot to preserve the jazzier warmth of Bailey's previous settings – and although there's a bit more crossover potential here, the sound is still never too commercial or aimed at the charts. Titles include "It's Our Time", "Trapped", "I Know", "I'm Waitin For Your Love", "Desire", "The Good Guy's Supposed To Get The Girls", and "Your Boyfriend's Back". CD

Banda Black RioMaria Fumaca (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Warner/Polysom (Brazil), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". A&M, 1978. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A far reaching late 70s set from Gato Barbieri – a record that blends fusiony jazz funk, lush stings, and Latin rhythms and fluid solos on a varied batch of tunes! One of the more interesting things about the production is that those varied approaches often come into play within the same tunes – with clean, lean fusiony bass and percussion underneath swelling string accents, showing Barbieri was unafraid to intermingle myriad influences at the time. Titles include a take on Caetano Veloso's "Odara", plus "Poinciana (Song Of The Tree)", "Latin Lady" (which guest Carlos Santana trading solos with Gato over tropical jazz funk backing), "She Is Michelle", "Where Is The Love", "Evil Eyes" and "Bolero". El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
An excellent collection of work from the great John Barry – one that focuses on his famous contributions for the James Bond films – but also includes other soundtrack and instrumental material as well! The set begins with the John Barry Plays 007 record – a brilliant album that not only features some instrumental soundtrack themes, but also includes some great mod Barry instrumentals from the 60s – kind of a nice link to his sophisticated film music, and some of his smaller combo work! Titles include "Kinky", "Fancy Dance", "007", "From Russia With Love", "Big Shield", "Aliki", "Monkey Feathers", and "The London Theme". Next are two tracks from Elizabeth Taylor In London – "Lovers & Browning", with a recitation by Taylor – plus the jazzy instrumental "The London Waltz". Next are two tracks from Zulu – a colonial period film that starred Michael Caine – followed by 15 more groovy instrumentals that include "Tit Willow Twist", "Hit & Miss", "Easy Beat", "Beat Girl", "The Lolly Theme", "Spinnerree", "Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone", "The Sun's Hooray", and "Saturday's Child". Oyo Recordings, 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Recent live material by Gary Bartz – and pretty darn nice! The tracks are performed by a quartet that includes Barney McAll on piano, Greg Bandy on drums, and Kenny Davis on bass – and the overall feel is similar to Bartz's early work as a leader on the albums Libra and Another Earth. By that, we mean that the tracks are long an introspective, with a soulful spiritual feel, and none of the extra funk, vocal, or R&B influences that showed up in Bartz's work later in the 70s. A nice little "back to the roots" set – featuring the tracks "Uranus", "Eastern Blues", "Day Dream", and "Soulstice". CD

Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

TCB (Switzerland), 1981/1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two European tenor giants – both featured here in a set of live recordings! The first half of the set features the great Gianni Basso on tenor – blowing on long, open-ended tracks with a real old school tenor vibe – almost more soulful than usual for Gianni, with a definite nod to the American sound of the 50s and early 60s. Players include Klaus Koenig on piano, Peter Frei on bass, and Peter Schmidlin on drums – and titles include "Lush Life", "Easy Living", "Groovin High", and "La Valle Dell'Amore". The second half of the record features the great Guy Lafitte – the French scene's biggest tenor tone of the 50s and 60s, blowing in a similarly laidback way – almost moreso than most of Guy's studio albums. Tracks are long, and the rhythm section is similar to the first – except for Pierre Favre on drums. Titles include "Tinto Time", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Cherokee", and "Climb Every Mountain". CD

Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". The work's a mixture of clubby soul and funky fusion – done in the leaner style of the best AVI sides handled by Rinder & Lewis – and featuring some great moments in both the soulful fusion vein and the sweeter disco one! The whole thing's very spiritual – like some lost Strata set from the 70s – and titles include remakes of Clifford Jordan's "John Coltrane" and Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus the tracks "Sacred Dimension", "The Black Ark", "Return To Ithaca", and "Divine Harmony". Sunnyside, 2016. Used ... $6.99
A totally great group – all hip leaders who've given us great records on their own in recent years, working together here as a combo with a really fresh sound of its own! The music draws on the strengths of the individual members, but also really pushes forward, too – as their unified voices create moments of pride and power that are maybe even brighter than recent records on own – a truly artful collective expression of the talents of Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, James Burton on trombone, Xavier Davis on piano, Vincente Archer on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. There's maybe more angular lines than we might have expected, but still a deep sense of warmth as well – on titles that include "Essence Of Beauty", "Double Consciousness", "Going Somewhere", "Salvador Da Bahia", "Devil Eyes", and "Awaiting Change". ✨✧ Art BlakeyNight At Birdland Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $38.99
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver – and featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, just a few months before his early death – plus Lou Donaldson on alto and Curley Russell on bass. The presence of alto instead of tenor makes the sound slightly different than later incarnations of the group – and the overall approach is one that virtually defines the shift from straight bop to hardbop in the 50s – a mode that both Blakey and Silver were key in creating. Tracks include "Split Kick", "Quicksilver", "Mayreh", and "A Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk ... CD
Atlantic, 1957. Used ... $1.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Arthur BlytheDa Da/Basic Blythe ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1986/1988. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – back to back in a single set! Da Da is a set that mixes some of the sharper edges of Blythe's earlier records with a few more contemporary touches – but always at a level that still has the reedman standing far from the mainstream! The core group here features Olu Dara on trumpet, Cecil McBee on bass, John Hicks on piano, and Bobby Battle on drums – and on the acoustic tracks, there's some great energy between them that soars with a soulful spirit birthed in the loft jazz years, maybe swung a bit straighter than before. A few other tunes add in some extra elements – an electric bass on one number, some light strings on another – but the core of the album still has a magnificent focus on that tone that Blythe had only perfected even more on records like this, especially on the more laidback numbers, which come as a real surprise, and reflect a ballad style we might not have guessed in the early days. Titles include "Odessa", "Esquinas", "After Paris", "Crescent", and "Break Time". Next up is Basic Blythe – not exactly basic work from Arthur Blythe, as the set features an added string ensemble too – but a record that certainly has the saxophonist really hitting a whole new level of genius! There's a great core group here – with John Hicks on piano, Anthony Cox on bass, and Bobby Battle on drums – and the strings are added in around the edges, never getting to much in the way of the combo energy, but also fleshing out the sound with this beautiful richness that only seems to enhance the sharp tone of Arthur's alto sax! The arrangements are great, too – hardly the usual "with strings" material, and instead very creative – with this mix of soul and sophistication that reminds us a bit of the Bill Lee scores for early Spike Lee films, but even longer and with the key addition of Blythe in the lead. Titles include "Lenox Avenue Breakdown", "Faceless Woman", "Ruby My Dear", "Heart To Heart", and "As Of Yet". CD

Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... $18.99
A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe. Titles include the funky break track "Grab Bag", plus "Sticky Stuff", "Moto Cross", "Tie Stick", and "Space Nuts". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". The set's got a perfect balance of modes – enough of the appeal of bigger mainstream funk acts of the time, but also some righteous undercurrents that really show the group's roots – both in the approach of the lyrics, and in the jazzy instrumentation of the backings – which often show a righteous side of the group that's mighty surprising! The record's one that just grows and grows with each new listening, and is put together with some great sharp-edged production by Jerry Peters – who has a way of showcasing all the most interesting elements, while still keeping things focused too. An album of brooding intensity from bassist Matt Brewer – a trio date that takes very special advantage of the tenor saxophone voice of Mark Shim! Shim's very much at home here – blowing these long, complex solos that have that sort of deep burning quality of his early work as a leader – free, but not in a free jazz sort of way – really covering a lot of space, in ways that are almost circular at times – as if he's slowly trying to plot out a new universe in jazz! Drummer Damon Reid matches the intensity of Shim in a great way – so much so that we're almost tempted to say that Brewer is the quietest partner on the date – save for the fact that his deep tones on bass have this low rumble that really sets the tone for the moodiness of the tenor. Not west coast, but "best coast" jazz – a prime example of the way the Clifford Brown/Max Roach team helped to cook up the intensity of the LA scene of the 50s by infusing it with a bit of New York fire! The album takes off in the extended mode of Clifford's All Stars album – and like that one, features Max Roach on drums alongside a lineup of players that includes Herb Geller and Joe Maini on alto saxes, Walter Benton on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, and Curtis Counce on bass – all jamming together in really extended, side-long tracks that have plenty of space for creative solo work and free-flowing improvisation! Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $11.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". Quite an unusual session from Gary Burton – recorded in Nashville, with a mix of jazz and country session players – coming together in an open-ended sound that's got lots of complicated touches. Gary's jazz side is represented by Roy Haynes on drums, Steve Swallow on bass, and Steve Marcus on sax – and the Nashville side of things is handled by players that include Buddy Emmons, Ray Edenton, Charlie McCoy, and Chet Atkins, who duets with Burton on two spare tracks. The sound is hard to describe, but quite different from, and equally striking as, Burton's 60s albums for RCA. Pretty cool work from west coast trumpeting brothers Pete & Conte Candoli – released to coincide with their appearance in Bell, Book, & Candle, where they worked in a small jazz combo fronted by Jack Lemmon (as a warlock!) on bongos! The style of the tracks is similar to those in the film – two trumpets up front, with groovy beat-era style backing that has a guitar echoing out in cool ways that give the tracks more of an edge than some of the brothers' other work from the time. A record with a bit of a gag in the title, but a set that has the mighty Caravan at their classic best – simply soaring to the skies on some of the best-crafted prog lines of their generation! The lineup has shifted a bit from before – only core members Pye Hastings on guitar and Richard Coughan on drums – but the sound is still wonderful, as Dave Sinclair steps on with lots of cool work on keyboards – and the group get assorted guest help from Brit jazz giants who include Tony Coe on tenor, Pete King on flute and alto, Henry Lowther on trumpet, Frank Rocotti on congas, and Rubert Hine on Arp! Peter Geoffrey Richardson is also a core member of the group, and provides electric viola at many spots – an instrument which doesn't change the Caravan sound, so much as slide right in and expand it. Deram/Universal (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Caravan – one of the greatest groups to emerge from the jazzy Canterbury scene in the late 60s! The album's a wonderful blend of jazz roots and more focused rock impulses – and has some subtle funky elements that's given it a wider sort of audience over the years – that special sound you'd find in a rare few Deram gems by artists like Mike Westbrook or Colosseum too. The drums are especially great – snapping out in a way that really holds things together, even when the instrumental solos really step out strongly – especially the organ, flute, and tenor – all of which retain a jazzy appeal. The vocals from Richard Sinclair are nice, too – never overdone, with almost a Robert Wyatt sort of reserve – and titles include "Golf Girl", "Love To Love You", "In The Land Of Grey & Pink", and the extended "Nine Feet Underground", which takes up all of side two. A bit of a shift in lineup for Caravan – but a set that has the group stepping out in all their fantastic proggy glory! This time around, Steve Miller provides some incredible work on electric piano, organ, and electric harpsichord – and the set also features some guest soprano sax work from Lol Coxhill, who'd later record wonderfully with Miller on Virgin Records – and whose presence here further underscores the qualities that make Caravan one of the jazziest groups of their prog generation! The classic core is wonderful too – Pye Hastings on guitars, Richard Sinclair on bass, and Richard Coughlan on drums – and the interplay between the latter two is fantastic, and really keeps the album driving onward. ✨✧ Jean CarnJean Carn ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jean Carn was one of the best-ever singers to hit the Philly International label – a sophisticated diva with a style that would strongly influence soul music for the next 10 years, and a downright compelling voice that crafted some of the best modern soul of her generation. Although Jean started out as a spiritually-oriented singer working with husband Doug Carn and Earth Wind & Fire, this debut album has her grooving in a style that resembles the classy Columbia sound of Marlena Shaw. Like Shaw, Carn takes the best of her jazz roots, and strips off the nonsense to adapt to a more modern style. Gamble & Huff take a great deal of care with the album – and are careful not to bury Jean's voice in overly club-oriented arrangements, as they occasionally did with other female singers. Includes the hit groover "Free Love", plus "Don't You Know Love When You See It", "You Are All I Need", "You Got A Problem", and "If You Wanna Go Back". LP, Vinyl record album

A record without any title, but more than enough energy to brilliantly state itself – thanks to magical interplay from the trio of Dario Carnovale on piano, Alessandro Turchet on bass, and Luca Colussi on drums! And yes, the format is one that you're certainly familiar with – but this is also one of those piano trio records that states itself as unique right from the start – not through any avant inclinations, but just through the freshness of the group and the way they work together – a strength that partly comes from the album's original music by Carnovale! In fact, we might say that these songs are strong enough, they hardly needed to title the album – as great tracks include "Rush", "Interpolation", "Miriam & Sara", "Return", "Malinko", and "Zisa". ChakachasJungle Fever ... CD
Polydor/Dusty Groove, 1972. Used ... $14.99
A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! The track was a worldwide hit, and continues to be a funky classic today – thanks to a heavy sample history, and a life in playlists worldwide – but the rest of the album's pretty darn great too, and even weirder. Some tracks mix easy Euro grooving with heavy conga, others have kind of an LA Chicano funk approach, and still others throw in some mad horns to complicate matters with nice jazzy riffing. Really great throughout – and maybe one of the best funky albums to ever come out on a major label! ChangeEverything & More – The Complete Collection 1980 to 2019 (Glow Of Love/Miracles/Sharing Your Love/This Is Your Time/Change Of Heart/Turn On Your Radio/Love 4 Love) (7CD set) ... CD
Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... Just Sold Out!
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums in a single package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. RCA/Mosaic, 1955. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive set of music recorded for RCA in 1955 – five classic albums, all featuring shifting lineups of players related to the Count Basie Band! The style here is often a bit more modern than most Basie work, but still also shows an undeniably strong sense of rhythm – one that comes into play wonderfully with the tighter RCA approach to hornwork of the 50s – which often brings out some of the sharper edges of the players. Although the material's been partially issued separately over the years, this complete Mosaic package is a real delight through and through – as it brings together all albums in one set, showing shared players and a very similar sensibility running through all the record. Albums include The Natural Seven, led by Al Cohn on tenor and featuring Joe Newman on trumpet and Freddie Green on guitar; Mr Rhythm, led by guitarist Green, and featuring Newman, Cohn, and trombonist Henry Coker; Lullaby Of Birdland, a leaderless date with Newman, Cohn, and Green, plus Frank Rehak on trombone and Ernie Wilkins on alto; I'm Still Swinging, led by newman with Cohn on tenor, Urbie Green on trombone, and Gene Quill on alto; and The Jazz Workshop Four Brass One Tenor – a set that has Cohn's tenor with trumpets from Newman, Thad Jones, Joe Wilder, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, and Nick Travis – each playing in shifting lineups. The package features a whopping 61 tracks in all – and the usual thorough Mosaic notes! CD

✨✧ Ornette ColemanShape Of Jazz To Come ... CD
Atlantic, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity". CD

Alice ColtraneEternity ... LP
Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneColtrane In Japan (3LP set) ... LP
Impulse (Japan), 1966. Near Mint- 3LPs ... Just Sold Out!
An unusual version of this one – featuring 3LPs and 5 sides of music! The set is different than the US version – a late concert performance showcasing 'Trane at his most out, featuring Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as well as Rashied Ali's propulsive drumming. This one features a version of "My Favorite Things" – plus takes of "Leo" and "Peace on Earth" . One of the definitive statements of "energy-jazz"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gal CostaGal Costa (1969) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
One of the most mindblowing albums ever recorded – anywhere, anytime! This 1969 set stands as one of the greatest records ever cut by Gal Costa – done at the height of the Tropicalia movement, and featuring a sublime mix of styles that really gets the spirit of the movement right. Arrangements are by the legendary Rogerio Duprat – who effortlessly shifts the backings between stark electronics, sweet bossa, gliding strings, jazzy piano, and baroque orchestrations that dance around with a surprising amount of grooves! Tunes include some classics by Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil – served up in amazing new versions by Gal and Duprat! Titles include "Nao Identificado", "Lost in the Paradise", "Que Pena", "Sebastiana", "Namorinho De Portao", "Divino Maravilhoso", and "Deus E O Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

Gal CostaGal Costa Canta Tom Jobim – Ao Vivo ... CD
BMG (Brazil), 1999. Used 2CDs ... $8.99
Gal Costa sings the best of Antonio Carlos Jobim – working here with a really sparkling sound in a live performance that covers the space of two CDs! The backing is by a very nice little jazz group, and Gal's at her best later styles here – hitting nice jazzy vocal passages, and singing freely without any clunky arrangements to hold her back. Cristovao Bastos leads the group and handled the arrangements – and he's as great as ever in this top-shelf setting – sophisticated, but nicely swinging – in a way that really keeps things fresh. Titles include "Fotografia", "Wave", "Derradeira Primavera", "Triste", "Anos Dourados", "Ligia", "Tema De Amor De Garbriela", and "Samba Do Avaio". CD
(Out of print first pressing. Booklet has light wear.)

✨✧ Count OssieTales Of Mozambique (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Dynamic Sounds/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest sets ever issued during the roots reggae wave of the 70s – and one of the most spiritual, too! The album's got a very special acoustic vibe at the core – earthy drumming that goes back to a pan-African tradition, these beautiful acoustic basslines that link the music strongly with underground jazz, and even some wicked sax and reed passages that make that link even stronger – especially when tied to the more message-oriented lyrics of the vocals! The album's hardly a straight roots album – and instead goes deep into the more spiritual side of Rastafari, with a personal, acoustic style that's instantly captivating – and which also has strong appeal to fans of other global sounds, and 70s spiritual jazz as well. A stunning classic – with tracks that include "Lock Stock & Barrel", "Selam Nna Wadada", "Tales Of Mozambique", "Let Freedom Reign", "Nigerian Reggae" and "Run One Mile". Features two bonus tracks too – "Rasta Reggae" and "Samia". LP, Vinyl record album
