✨✧ Jack McDuffAnother Real Good'Un (32 Jazz) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice little album of soul jazz organ tracks by Jack McDuff, and proof that he was always still burning strong! Unlike other Hammond players, who got a bit sloppy in later years, McDuff always kept things interesting, and managed to come up with some creative arrangements and soulful solos that pushed his work way past the usual soul jazz bag. This set was recorded with Cecil and Ron Bridgewater, Houston Person, and Cecil Brooks III – and features a nice set of longish groovers like "Another Real Good'Un", "Rock Candy", "Off The Beaten Path", and "Summertime", which McDuff always does nicely. 32 Jazz, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful set from Mulgrew Miller – one of his greatest albums as a leader, and exemplary of the kind of underground jazz that was still bubbling strong in the 80s! The set features Miller's quintet with Kenny Garrett on alto and flute, Steve Nelson on vibes, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums – led by Miller in a range of expressive styles carried off with effortless ease. There's some really nice numbers on here with a gentle and soulful groove – mixing vibes, piano, and alto in wonderful shades of colors and tone. Titles include "Sonhos Do Brasil", "Wingspan", "One's Own Room", "The Eleventh Hour", and "Soul Leo". CD

✨✧ Charlie RouseEpistrophy (32 Jazz) ... CD
Landmark/32 Jazz, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little later set from Charlie Rouse – recorded for the Landmark label, and done in a real "back to basics" style! The format is modern, Monkish hardbop – a full set of Thelonious originals, performed lovingly by Rouse, Monk's most important sideman of the 60s. The tunes are taken a bit more freely than on their classic readings by Monk – which is a good thing, as it makes the album much more than just a rehash of older themes. Players on the set include Don Cherry, George Cables, Buddy Montgomery, and Jessica Williams – and tunes include "Nutty", "Ruby My Dear", "Blue Monk", "Epistrophy", and "In Walked Bud". CD

✨✧ Charles LloydJust Before Sunrise – Dream Weaver/Love-In ... CD
Atlantic/32 Jazz, 1966/1967. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two great sets from reedman Charles Lloyd! Dream Weaver really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Even though leading the group on tenor and flute, Lloyd's got a real sense of rhythm to his playing – echoes of the Hamilton group – but set loose with a stellar quartet of younger players – including Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all perfect choices for inventive music like this! The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". Love-In features a classic batch of modal grooves from Charles Lloyd – recorded during the height of his mind-expanding years, with his famous quartet that included Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tracks are long and magical, done with that spiritual spiraling sound that Lloyd was wowing the hippies with at the time – and considering that this set was recorded live at the Fillmore, there were an awful lot of hippies present to be wowed! But the set's also got a charm that lives long past its time – thanks to an expansive vision from Lloyd on flute and tenor, and from Jarrett on piano too. Titles include "Sunday Morning", "Love-in", "Tribal Dance", and "Temple Bells". CD

✨✧ Johnny LytleEasy Easy – Fast Hands/Happy Ground ... CD
32 Jazz, 1980/1991. Used ... $11.99
Fast Hands is a great date from the revival years of Johnny Lytle – his stretch for Muse Records at the end of the 70s, and a bit of a return to his soul jazz roots of the 60s! The tracks here are a bit longer than before, but they've got a similar sort of energy – a nice rhythmic undercurrent that comes from the drums of Idris Muhammad and percussion of Larry Killian – and which is topped by Johnny's vibes and the tenor of Houston Person, plus some nice keyboards from Mickey Tucker. Titles include a reworking of Lytle's classic stepper "The Man", plus "Blues To Be There", "Sister Silver", "Bein Green", and "Tomorrow". Happy Ground is one of the few later Johnny Lytle LPs to maintain his classic vibes/organ/congas sound of his earlier years – in this case recorded with David Braham on organ and Sammy Figueroa on congas. As the title might imply, the LP features a remake of Lytle's classic "Happy Ground". Other highlights include a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" and a moody take on "A Child Is Born". The LP also includes performances by Melvin Sparks and Houston Person, who give the set a nice soul jazz grounding! CD

Muse/32 Jazz, 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Martino plays in a 2-guitar quartet – with Bobby Rose backing him up on guitar, plus rhythm accompaniment by Richard Davis and Billy Higgins. The sound's definitely in the trippier, post-hippie style of Martino's work, with a sort of looseness and fluidity that you either love or hate, but a nicely swinging rhythm underneath. Titles include "Footprints", "Road Song", "The Visit", and "Alone Together". CD

Pat MartinoMission Accomplished (Interchange/Nightwings) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, Mid 90s. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
A two CD set – one that brings together two Muse Records sessions from Pat Martino! First up is Interchange – later work from Pat Martino, but a set that shows that the guitarist has lost none of his fire over the years! The set's done with a relatively freewheeling sound – not free, but open, as Martino spirals out wonderfully with some very creative solo lines – often quite extended, and filled with the sort of rapid-fire creativity we've always loved in his work. The group on the date is a quartet – with James Ridl on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums – but most numbers feel very dominated by Martino's guitar, which is a good thing by us. Titles include "Black Glass", "Interchange", "Just For Then", "Blue In Green", and "Catch". Nightwings features Pat Martino on guitar, Bob Kenmotsu on tenor, James Ridl on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Bill Stewart on drums! CD

✨✧ Ralph MooreComplete Landmark Recordings ... CD
Landmark/32 Jazz, 1988/1990. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
One of the great things about jazz is that even if you know the big names, there's always some amazing talent bubbling under the surface, working away hard, and coming up with some fantastic recordings! Ralph Moore is one of those talents, and these recordings of his from the end of the 80s never got the kind of fame they deserved – which is a real shame, because they've got a perfection, maturity, and depth that's at Blue Note levels. The first record in the set, 1988's Images, is especially wonderful – as it features Moore blowing with the kind of soulfulness we miss ever since Hank Mobley stopped recording. And with the great Kenny Washington on drums, Moore skates around with the kind of soulful lyricism that we warmly remember from the Mobley/Billy Higgins sessions of the 60s. At this price, the 2CD set's a great way to discover Moore's rich talents, and catch up on what you missed a decade ago. Titles inlcude "Punjab", "Freeway", "Enigma", "Episode From A Village Dance", "Morning Star", "Blues For John", "Into Dawn", and "Hopscotch". CD

Although Sonny Phillips was one of the funky organ players to record for Prestige during the classic jazz funk years, by the time of this recording, he'd emerged as a more spiritual talent, with a looser, freer approach, and a much more open-ended vibe. 32 Jazz, Mid 60s/1970s/Mid 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
2 CD set that brings together a huge amount of the best tracks cut by trumpeter Woody Shaw during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The selection is excellent, and the material is culled from Muse records like The Iron Men, Imagination, Solid, and Cassandrite – plus a few Blue Note 60s sessions. There's a number of great cuts that feature Shaw in his youthful edgey period, playing with Herbie Hancock, Larry Young, and Joe Henderson – and there's a lot more that have him laying down mature soulful solos with the likes of Kenny Barron, Kenny Garrett, and Kirk Lightsey. Titles include "Dat Dere", "Spiderman Blues", "Solid", "Obsequious", "Baloo Baloo", "Tetragon", and "Nutville". CD

✨✧ Woody ShawLast Of The Line (Cassandranite/Love Dance) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1965/1975. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 of Woody Shaw's greatest albums – recorded 10 years apart, and forming a fantastic CD collection! Cassandranite features fantastic early work by Woody Shaw – an album originally recorded in 1965, when Shaw was part of a core soul jazz underground that was slowly forming an answer to the "new thing" movement of the mid 60s. The session was self-produced – and not only features some killer playing by Shaw, but contains a number of other wonderful touches. Larry Young plays piano (not organ) on two tracks; Herbie Hancock is on another 3; George Cables plays electric on the last track, which also includes Harold Vick; Joe Henderson plays tenor throughout; and the great Joe Chambers is on drums. The set is filled with fantastic modal originals, all along the lines of Shaw's "Moontrane" composition – and titles include "Baloo Baloo", "Three Muses", "Tetragon", and "Cassandranite". Love Dance is equally great – spiritual, soulful, and filled with some nice modal grooving! The group's one of the best he ever worked with on Muse – with Billy Harper on tenor, plus Rene McLean, Steve Turre, Joe Bonner, and Cecil McBee – and the approach reminds us of some of the work on Strata East from the same time. The highlight of the record is the cut "Sunbath", which was done in a more famous jazz dance version by singer Joyce Hurley – but Shaw's version has a very similar groove. Harper makes many of the other tracks shine brilliantly, and titles include "Love Dance", "Obsequious", and Harper's own beautiful composition "Soulfully I Love You". CD

Muse/32 Jazz, 1974. Used ... $29.99
A beautiful piece of soulful spiritualism! This great Muse album is one of Woody Shaw's strongest seventies LPs, and one of the few that really captures the energy that he had when he first appeared on the scene in the mid 60s. The group is a large ensemble packed with great players like Azar Lawrence, Cecil McBee, and Steve Turre – and the album's filled with great compositions that display Woody's best modernist soul jazz sides, like "Tapscott's Blues" and "Sanyas". The record also includes a reworking of Shaw's "Moontrane", which he recorded with Larry Young on the classic Unity album. This great CD reissue also comes with 2 bonus cuts from the session which weren't on the original LP! CD

One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! Beat (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the more obscure entries in the caveman comedy genre that cropped up briefly at the end of the 60s – a set of very groovy tunes for a movie that has the females going on a sex strike to keep the men from fighting! There's very little in the music to tie the film to Lysistrata – as the tunes are delightfully whimsical, and move through a mix of bossa-styled jazz, mod rock moments, and a few funky touches – all in that best style put forth by the Italian scene in the 60s! The score has a few standout fuzzy/funky guitar bits, and maybe best of all are the vocal numbers – sung by Gli Alluminogeni, and based around this "Troglomen" theme – which has cool chanting in a very rhythmic way. 32 tracks in all – and a number of bonus tracks too! A nicely done compilation of pivotal work from the great Ramsey Lewis – focusing on his work for Columbia/CBS Records from the 70s and early 80s – and very well chosen at that! ✨✧ LightmenFree As You Wanna Be (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Judnell/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A record that definitely lives up to its title – as it's a lot freer and more spiritual than later work from drummer Bubbha Thomas and his Lightmen group! This set perfectly captures the unique vibe that the ensemble brought to the Houston scene at the start of the 70s – really the same sort of new jazz freedom explored by artists like Horace Tapscott in LA, or the AACM in Chicago – performed by a generation of musicians who might have been more straight ahead a few years before – but who really take off here in the new energy of the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are still pretty rhythmic, and have a unified core – but some of the performances are even more outside than you'd know from later Lightmen records – showing a strong avant jazz pedigree for the members of the group. The lineup here features a very young Ronnie Laws on alto, soprano sax, and flute – sounding quite different than his jazz fusion work of the late 70s – and in addition to Thomas on drums, other players include Doug Harris on tenor, Carl Adams on trumpet, Kenny Abair on guitar, and Joe Singleton on trombone. Titles include "Creative Music", "Free As You Wanna Be", "May 67", "Luke 23:32-49", "#109 Psychosomatic", and "Talk Visit". Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $15.99
Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons had a legendary run of performances on record with Cecil Taylor – but he sounds equally amazing here as a leader – given the space to really stretch out in a 3LP set that brings together a landmark live performance from 1978! Lyons works here with some lesser-known names – a quintet that includes Karen Borca on bassoon, Hayes Burnett on bass, Munner Bernard Fennell on cello, and Roger Blank on drums – but all players really catch the fire from his horn, and open up in a way that starts with loft jazz inspiration, then really soars to the stratosphere! The live setting of the album – recorded in a cinema – brings a really great quality of "space" to the overall production – and you can really feel Lyons and the group working together as their sounds and performance echo throughout the theater. ✨✧ Piero PiccioniKenner/More Than A Miracle (3CD set) ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1967/1969. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A double-header of material from Italian maestro Piero Piccioni – presented in a wonderfully rich, heavily-detailed style – the first time we've ever seen his music handled in the lavish Film Score Monthly manner! First up is the obscure soundtrack to Kenner – a late 60s Jim Brown film, done by Piero with a wonderfully sensitive soundtrack – really lovely woodwind interplay, with an undercurrent of jazz – almost a Johnny Mandel sort of mode, but with some of the occasional mod touches you'd expect from Piccioni on some of his better-known scores. There's some cuts that have a nicely pronounced soul jazz vibe – while others move between some lyrical sounds that are mighty sweet – and there's some bits that feature organ played with the raspy edges that always make Piero's handling of the instrument so different from others'. CD 1 features 32 tracks from Kenner – including some rare bonus material too – all conducted by Bruno Nicolai! CDs 2 and 3 feature More Than A Miracle, a dreamy little soundtrack by Piero Piccioni – not as mad as some of his more famous Italian work, but with plenty of nice touches! Piccioni's going for more of an atmospheric approach here with isolated instrumentation drifting over rhythmic string passages, in a way that's halfway between Ennio Morricone and Francis Lai. A few tracks have more whimsical musical touches – and the main theme is played by Roger Williams on piano with chorus backing. Titles include "The Chef", "The Tournament", "The Eggs Are Bewitched", "The Contest", "Prince Rodrigo", and "Rodrigo Leaves The Monastery". This expanded package features very detailed notes – and a whopping 70 tracks from the film – the full soundtrack album initially issued on MGM, 19 cuts from the film score itself, and an additional 36 bonus tracks too! A heady look at the Danish psych scene at the end of the 60s – music that's not nearly as well known as US or UK material from the time – but every bit as groovy! Most of these groups sing in English, and are sharing some of the same influences that were coming out of the British scene in the late 60s – no surprise, as they were probably receiving most of the same pirate radio broadcasts that were such a key part of transformative modes during the decade – which means that you'll hear a huge strain of elements running through this music – influences from jazz and blues, as well as a shift from beat group styles into much more sophisticated modes – including proggy touches too. A treasure trove of spiritual jazz from saxophonist Idris Ackamoor – featuring his famous 70s recordings with The Pyramids, solo material, and even some previously unissued titles! The bulk of the collection comes from The Pyramids' albums Birth Speed Merging, Lalibela, and King Of Kings – all freely creative records that build upon traditions initiated by the AACM in Chicago, and taken further groups like The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Human Arts Ensemble, or Oneness Of Juju. Many tracks build freely from earthy percussion, bits of vocals, and spiraling solos on saxes and flute – with a sound that's incredibly soulful and righteous – very positive and progressive, and easily some of the best work of this nature from the time! 2CD set features Pyramids tracks "The Land Of Eternal Song (part 3)", "Mohgo Naba", "Queen Of The Spirits (part 3)", "Black Man Of The Nile", "Aomawa", "The River Ganges", and "Masenko Nights" – plus "Spiritual Rebirth", "Centurian", "Topanga", "Cubana", and "Africa" by Idris Ackamoor; as well as "The Shepherd's Tune" by The Collective. Pepper AdamsJulian (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Titles include "Julian", "Ad Astra", "Jirge", "Spacemaker", and "Three & One". CD features two bonus tracks – "Time On My Hands" and "Lady Luck". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley & The Bossa Rio Sextet With Sergio Mendes ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Afro SoultetAfrodesia ... CD
Banyon/Luv N' Haight, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The wildly diverse, heavily percussive global jazz, soul, and exotica inspired Afrodesia from the late 60s combo Afro Soultet – a crazy rare one, too! The group purportedly has roots in Texas, but incarnations of it were gigging around LA a bit earlier as Afro Latin Blues Quintet +1 and a bit later as Afro Latin Soultet. Here they play with boundless inspiration from around the globe. Afro Latin percussion and rhythms hold it all together, but they bring in strains of Latin soul, African rhythms, straighter jazz and madly percussive instrumental rock. Producer/composer/arranger/raconteur Jack Millman plays drums in the group as Johnny Kitchen, and other players include Joey Dubreau on vibes, Frank Morris on guitar and harmonica, Eddie Paris on drums, Dean Elliot on percussion, William Quinn on flute & sax, and Bill Collins on keys. Includes "Afrodesia", "Mozamba", "Soul Rockin'", "Afro Revolt", "Torrid Zone", "Oom Gowa", "Slave Traders", "Drumbouie", "Aphro Bugaloo", "Chocolate Drop", "Le Berber" and "Sand, Sun And Sea". CD

✨✧ AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Buddah/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". LP, Vinyl record album

A mix of fusiony jazz rock, a bit of funk and some more sweeping arrangements – sometimes in the span of a single song on this fairly underappreciated Atlantic set from Jan Akkerman! Mixing easy listening and funk is the kind of thing that's pulled off pretty well, or falls completely flat, and Jan makes it work here. A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. CEM/Cometa/Sonor (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $42.99
Stunning sounds from the great Alessandro Alessandroni – an artist who contributed to countless Italian soundtracks in the 60s and 70s, and who sounds even more amazing here in this rare set of sound library funk! The album's all instrumental, and is overflowing with groovy little tracks – which mix together a blend of jazzy, fuzzy, and dreamy elements – all of them pretty darn nice! The approach is great – leaner than some of Alessandroni's soundtrack material, and more direct too – with a vibe that's right upfront, as the tunes leap from sound to sound, style to style – but always in a nicely trippy version of instrumental funk. Titles include "Flautiana", "Invention", "Evolution", "Giovane Flirt", "Campeggiatori", "Arcipelago", "On The Boat", "Cielo Giallo", and "Acque Azzurre". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric AlexanderSummit Meeting ... CD
Milestone, 2002. Used ... $6.99
This tenor giant gets better and better with each new album! Eric Alexander is one of our favorite new jazz artists of the past decade – still a relatively young player, but with a sound that's incredible, steeped in years of tradition, yet freely creative in his own unique way. His tenor solos on this set stand up to some of our favorite older work by players like Clifford Jordan or Sonny Rollins, and if anything, the backing may be some of the best he's ever received on record. Alexander's playing here with longtime friend and musical partner Harold Mabern – who's as sympathetic to Alexander's sound as he once was to that of Frank Strozier – and the other players in the group include trumpeter Nicholas Payton, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth. Titles include "Andre's Turn", "After The Rain", "This Girl's In Love With You", "A House Is Not A Home", and "Summit Meeting". CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsJug (second cover) ... LP
Prestige, 1961. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real turning point in the career of Gene Ammons – a record that almost returns Ammons to his earthier roots, and in the process helps build up a whole new sound in soul jazz for the 60s! The "Jug" nickname in the title is kind of a joking way to help Ammons stand alongside "Miles", "Trane", "Diz", and other one-name monikered stars in jazz – but even without that gimmick (which somehow lasted for years), the album's got a depth that more than gets Gene back on top, thanks to a gritty soulfulness and good sense of feeling in the grooves! Players here include Richard Wyands on piano on most numbers – plus a rare appearance by Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson on 2 numbers – one on organ, one on piano. Rhythm is by Doug Watkins on bass and JC Heard on drums – and Ray Barretto makes one of his great soul jazz appearances on drums – rolling the groove along with a nice bit of bounce throughout! Titles include "Tangerine", "Ol Man River", "Easy To Love", "Seed Shack", "Miss Lucy", and "Namely You". LP, Vinyl record album

Isabelle AntenaEn Cavale ... CD
Giant, 1986. Used ... $6.99
Beautifully sweet and jazzy from the lovely Isabelle Antena – recording here under her own name, but still very much in the mode of the French trio from which she emerged! The record actually came about during the later years of Antena – at a time when the group was still recording sporadically, and still working very much in the spirit of the bossa and jazz styles of their debut. On this set, Isabelle steps forward a bit more as a lead singer, and the overall groove shows a bit more of a love of soul – blended together here with the jazz influences in a way that's very similar to the best side of Sade in her early years, but also handled here with a leaner, more personal indie style. There's a great 80s pop vibe running through the set – one that makes for some nicely catchy numbers, as well as a few dancefloor mis-steps! Titles include "Play Back", "Easy Street", "Seaside Weekend", "Magic Words", "How Can They Tell", and "Ten Minutes". CD

Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 4LP ... $54.99 69.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". ✨✧ Roy AyersVibrations ... LP
Polydor, 1976. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Two gems from the legendary pairing of these two great 70s jazz funk giants! "Step In To Our Life" is the title cut from one of the albums that Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson cut together – and the tune has all the edgy vibes of Roy's great Polydor records, mixed with some of the slightly tighter funk of Henderson's At Home Productions – with plenty of space for both artists to solo! "For Real" is a tune with a bassline and some great Roy Ayers-styled vocals sliding along the groove – but still plenty of jazzy touches from both of the leaders! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Kollington/Soul Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 32.99
An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De". One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer work from the late 50's by Chet! Although Baker's trumpet playing in the early part of the decade became known as one of the trademark "cool" sounds of the west coast, he started to move towards a sound that was a lot more hardbop at the end of the decade – as you'll hear on this tasty album. The session's got a great (and unlikely) batch of players accompanying Chet – like firey young soul jazz pianist Bobby Timmons, modal grooving bassist Jimmy Bond, and cool tenorist Phil Urso. The set's a great one, and pushes Chet's sound way past the usual stereotypes. Titles include "Medium Rock", "Lucius Lu", "Revelation", and "To Mickey's Memory". Plus, this excellent reissue CD also adds a number of bonus tracks recorded by the same group, but not issued with the original album. An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Binger's the composer, and has kind of a postwar modern sensibility about his music – that mix of core elements and individual voices that made Mingus so great when he was at his best – except Daniel's also got more of an ear for modal rhythms, of the sort that remind us a bit of the inspirations on the European scene during the Saba/MPS generation, taken forward with some of the fresher, completely visionary ideas that we've always loved from the Moserobie label! The group's a sextet with some key Moserobie members in the line up – Jonas Kullhammar on alto, Karl Olandersson on trumpet, Per Texas Johansson on tenor, Charlie Malmberg on piano, Moussa Fadera on drums, and the mighty Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass – whose energy alone is enough to guide the album. Titles include "City Sirens", "Cinco De Mayo", "Henry & Bernard", "Notredame", "Lost Keys", "Gil Bill", and "Kaya Boca". CD

✨✧ Edwin BirdsongDance Of Survival (with bonus track) ... CD
Bamboo/Shout (Japan), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tripped out funky soul from the great Edwin Birdsong – a rare indie album released between his years at Polydor and Philly International! The set's got a wilder sound than any of his other work – kind of a righteous funk set for the dancefloor – recorded with lots of weird production touches, edgey guitar bits, and a style that's almost psychedelic-folk-jazz-disco! Birdsong's lyrics are more "out there" than ever, and there's some great spacey production that really makes the whole thing sound great – and which gives the record a very cool feel that's unlike anything else we can think of. A real lost treasure from the 70s indie underground – with titles that include "Dance Of Survival", "What's Your Sign", "Night Of The Full Moon", "Astral Walk", and "Your Smile Gave Birth To My Idea". CD features the bonus 7" mix of "Dance Of Survival". CD

High Note, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

✨✧ Art BlakeyBuhaina's Delight ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! During the early 60s, Blakey expanded the Jazz Messengers from a quintet to an incredibly tight sextet – adding in the trombone of Curtis Fuller for an extra-punched up frontline that also included Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor, who had returned to the group after a short departure. The band was augmented by the wonderfully lyrical and soulful piano of a young Cedar Walton – who brought a strong degree of sophistication, and who was a perfect interpreter of Shorter's rich writing talents. The whole group performs together perfectly on this wonderful (and oft-overlooked) session – especially on the tracks "Shaky Jake", "Backstage Sally", and "Bu's Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey, without any Jazz Messengers – but still coming through loud and clear, thanks to help from a unique group that features Sonny Stitt on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Art Davis on bass! The album's still got all the hardbop charm of Blakey's best Blue Note dates, but also feels a bit more spontaneous too – and the basslines of Davis are a wonderful change from the usual – beautiful sounds that drive the record quite strongly up from the bottom! Titles include the killer "Cafe", plus "Blues Back", "Just Knock On My Door", "Summertime", and "The Song Is You" – and the album features fantastic blowing from Stitt! CD

Blue Note, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group still included Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham – one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did ain a studio one! Tracks include "Minor's Holiday", "The Theme", "Prince Albert", and "Deciphering The Message" – and the CD features 3 bonus tracks, all long, plus great remastering! CD

Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mindblowing early work from pianist Paul Bley – two side-long tracks that really show the pianist stretching out and expanding his mind – quite far from even his few modern moments on record in years before! The group here is very well-suited to the spirit of the set – Mark Levinson on warmly rounded bass, and Barry Altschul on some freer, bolder drums – balanced with the freer lines on Bley's piano, but at a level that really shows that underlying sensitivity that made Paul so different than so many other avant jazz musicians of his generation. This is especially true on the sublime reading of Bley's "Mister Joy" – a mindblowing journey in music – but it also comes through on "Blood" as well. CD

A great soundtrack for a really stupid movie – featuring an amazing theme song! The soundtrack features some incredibly subdued work from Blood Sweat & Tears – playing in a laidback and jazzy mode that's like the best of Quincy Jones or Dave Grusin electric soundtrack of the time! The album also features some dialogue that comes in and out of the mix – which you can overlook – but the film's theme is more than enough reason to grab this one! BreakawayBreakaway/Straight On To The Top ... CD
Breakaway/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 14.99
A pair of completely rare albums from Breakaway – a St Louis combo from the late 70s – with a groove that's equal part jazzy club and blue-eyed soul! Breakaway is the group's debut – recorded in 1977 with a surprisingly tight sound – especially given that the group were essentially a local club act who got the chance to record a bit in a local studio! The feel is very much in the best LA mode of the time, but maybe a bit looser too – with emphasis on some funky riffing from the male members of the group, plus sweet lead vocals from singer Kathy Newbry-Taylor – an artist who might have been pop, had she worked on the coasts – but who stretches her style nicely here. The album's been made famous by both On Track and Americana comps on BBE – and titles include "There's A New Group In Town", "Who Was It This Time", "Love My Eyes", "Understudy DJ", "Everything's Been Said About You", and "My Symphony". Right On To The Top is the second set from Breakaway – and the album already shows a great deal of growth – especially in the territory of rhythm! Breakaway have definitely dug some of the best club modes from the New York scene – and work here in a jazzy disco style that's filled with sweet keyboard lines alongside the female lead vocals – all with a vibe that's nicely stripped-down, and still lives up to the indie spirit of the group. The set features some guest work on horns, which nicely expands the sound – and titles include "Straight On To The Top", "You Are Love", "Back & Forth", "There's A New Tree In The Forest", "Work With The Music", and "Breakaway". Lovely work from singer Brigette – recorded with a sound that's warm, sunny, and soulful – and helped out by some nice jazzy touches from guitarists Dori Caymmi and Heito Pereira, and flautist Hubert Laws! There's a quality here that reminds us of some of our favorite jazzy soul of the 70s – tight, but never too slick – and classy, yet still always wonderfully soulful in the lyrics. Plus, the tunes have some great Braziliany touches that really bring out the west coast vibe in the music – skipping around with a sense of lightness and life that we really love! Quite an unusual record from trumpeter Magnus Broo – a set that him handling a number of jazz standards – which is a real change from the more experimental sounds we've always heard from his own pen! And yet, amidst the current Scandia scene, Broo's always had a depth of tone that's really classic – and his approach here is wonderful, as he doesn't just echo familiar modes with the songs, but instead uses them as these compelling showcases for his unusual phrasing – his very particular way with the mouthpiece, which gets plenty of room in the spotlight – thanks to a trio setting that features the great Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Hakon Mjaset Johanson on drums. If you're just expecting a set of ballads and easygoing jazz, then think again – as Magnus creates a wealth of surprises here – on titles that include "You've Changed", "Summertime", "Easy Living", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Don't Explain", and "Like Someone In Love". Doctor Bird/Dub Store (Japan), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
Raw grooves from the Jamaican scene of the pre-reggae years – served up here in a blend of early ska, jump up soul, and other jazzy styles of the time – all handled by Sonia Pottinger, who was the first female producer on the Kingston scene! There's a nice mix of modes going on here, and the album's a great contrast to some of the more famous Jamaican records of the time – as it really shows the criss-crossing of Caribbean influences that was still filtering into the scene, even while things were coming together with a decidedly local groove. Trumpeter Baba Brooks is one of the standouts here – and works with his group on the tracks "Mosquito Jump Up", "First Session", "Bugle Boy", "Faberge", and "Ki Salavoca" – alongside other tracks that include "Hold Your Head In Front" by Joe White & Chuck, "By The Sea" by The Saints, "Heartaches" by The Techniques, and "What Must I Say" by Claudell Clarke. Errol BrownDubb Everlasting/Dub Expression ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of dub classics from Errol Brown – back to back on a single CD! Dubb Everlasting is a record that might mis-spell the name of its genre, but it's also a set that strips things right down to the core, then adds a very unique touch! Errol Brown works here in the Treasure Isle studios with massive rhythms from The Revolutionaries – but in a session that also includes a mysterious harmonica player too – who uses the instrument to carve out unusual riffs that are sometimes jazz, sometimes bluesy – almost making it feel like War's Lee Oskar is sitting in for a session down in Kingston! The instrument is quite different here than when melodica is used in dub – and titles include "Eva A Dub", "Marigunna Affair", "Babylon Dubbing", "Escape Affair", "Biblical Dub", and "Easy Locks". On Dub Expression, the mighty Errol Brown is at the controls in Treasure Isle – reworking some wicked rhythms played by The Revolutionaries – all with the stripped-down vibe of the best underground dub from Kingston in the 70s! Echo is heavy on the bottom-end of the sound – which makes the grooves ebb and flow in a way that's got a heck of a lot of sonic power – while some of the more isolated instruments over the top step along in a more melodic way – sometimes a bit of organ, guitar, or bubbling bass, depending on the track! The presentation is as stripped-down as the music – but at that mysterious level that only makes the record such a cool little treasure – with tracks that include "Bond Street Rock", "Ranking Marshal", "The Gun Court Dub", "Ital Stew", "Super Tracks", "Dread At The Controls", and "Ghetto Dub". Oscar Brown Jr.Sin & Soul (And Then Some) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1960. Used ... $3.99
Trend-setting vocal work from Oscar Brown Jr – one of the hippest singers of his generation, and a vocalist who really took things to the next level in the 60s! Brown's got a sound that's partially influenced by the vocalese of Eddie Jefferson, Jon Hendricks, and other singers of the 50s – but his groove here is also a bit more fluid and lyrical too – thanks to some great lyrics penned by Oscar, some of which went on to become classics over the years. Like his predecessors, many of the tunes chosen by Brown got their start as jazz instrumentals, but sparkle anew here with fresh lyrics that really liven them up a lot – tales of sin and soul and a lot more, often delivered with a good sense of wit. Titles include great vocal versions of "Dat Dere", "Work Song", and "Afro-Blue", plus some of his great original compositions, like "Brown Baby", "But I Was Cool", and "Rags and Old Iron". The arrangements are great, with a nice jazzy sound – and the group includes the excellent Floyd Morris on piano! Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". Far-thinking genius from Tim Buckley – and one of his most experimental albums ever! Lorca really takes off from the sound of earlier albums – pushing the jazz side of the spectrum even more, and stretching out on longer tracks that have his vocals riffing a lot more than usual. Backing is relatively spare – with some nice use of pipe organ and electric piano – and Tim himself is playing 12-string guitar on the sessions. Tunes are all long, and feature some really haunting, echoey vocals. Titles include "Lorca", "I Had A Talk With My Woman", "Anonymous Proposition", and "Driftin". A bizarre but brilliant effort! Impulse, 1986. Used ... $9.99
An overlooked gem from the revival years of Impulse Records – a set recorded in the mid 80s, but one that easily matches the soul and spirituality of the label's best work from the late 60s and early 70s! Pianist Henry Butler steps out here with a strong musical vision – one colored by his own bold McCoy Tyner-esque lines on the piano – and embellished by great solo work from Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Azar Lawrence on tenor. Rhythm is by Charlie Haden on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – who definitely match Butler's pulsating, modal-influenced groove here – and additional instrumentation includes bits of flute and oboe, plus a string quartet on 2 numbers – coming off with Alice Coltrane-like brilliance! Great proof that righteous jazz was still being made in the 80s – with titles that include "Fivin Around", "LA Samba", "Improvisation On An Afghan Theme", "Giant Steps", and "Butler's Blues". CD

Blue Note, 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
An incredible record that was one of the highest points of Donald Byrd's career! The album's the third one he cut with producer/arranger Larry Mizell – and of all Byrd's work with Mizell, this one's the funkiest, the tightest, the most soulful, and the most perfectly realized vision of the smooth jazz funk sound that the team were aiming at. Every track is a winner – and the album glides along with a slippery sinewy groove, never pausing for a weak moment or a misplaced note, shimmering with pride in its own genius. Byrd's trumpet soars over the top, banking gracefully over waves of funky drums, spacey keyboards, and extremely well-placed vocals – all brought together perfectly by Mizell, with a tightly fused style that few people have ever been able to match in the studio since! Peter Geoffrey Richardson is also a core member of the group, and provides electric viola at many spots – an instrument which doesn't change the Caravan sound, so much as slide right in and expand it. Maybe the greatest moment ever from Caravan – one of the greatest groups to emerge from the jazzy Canterbury scene in the late 60s! The album's a wonderful blend of jazz roots and more focused rock impulses – and has some subtle funky elements that's given it a wider sort of audience over the years – that special sound you'd find in a rare few Deram gems by artists like Mike Westbrook or Colosseum too. The drums are especially great – snapping out in a way that really holds things together, even when the instrumental solos really step out strongly – especially the organ, flute, and tenor – all of which retain a jazzy appeal. The vocals from Richard Sinclair are nice, too – never overdone, with almost a Robert Wyatt sort of reserve – and titles include "Golf Girl", "Love To Love You", "In The Land Of Grey & Pink", and the extended "Nine Feet Underground", which takes up all of side two. Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends/Singing Playing ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1973. New Copy ... $13.99
Two early gems from guitarist Larry Carlton – back to back on a single CD! First up is the Uni album With A Little Help From My Friends – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". Next is Singing/Playing, and the title's no lie – as Larry Carlton steps out in a warmly-produced session that's got a really sweet LA studio vibe – one that mixes together early fusion backings and compressed vocalizations – in a way that maybe makes the whole thing feel like an overlooked A&M Records gem from the Nick DeCaro years! Larry's got this easygoing vocal style that's very down to earth, and set up in these sweet arrangements directed by Stewart Levine – soulful, jazzy, and with occasional currents of funk – and with some great keyboard touches from MIchael Omartin next to Larry's guitar and vocals. Titles include the great "American Family", plus "Wavin & Smilin", "Easy Evil", "Free Way", "Captain Captain", and "With Respect To Coltrane". CD

A great later album from Change – not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Titles include "Turn On Your Radio", "Examination", "Let's Go Together", "Oh What A Feeling", "Mutual Attraction", "If You Want My Love", and "Love The Way You Love Me". ✨✧ Kenny ClarkeKenny Clarke Meets The Detroit Jazzmen ... CD
Savoy/Nippon (Japan), 1956. Used ... $8.99
One of the first albums from guitarist Kenny Burrell as a leader – a date that has him working with players from his hometown scene in Detroit – in case you couldn't guess from the title! Kenny's style here is a bit different than on the Blue Note dates of the time – almost a bit more personal, and leaner – which is a surprise, given the usual heavier feel of a Savoy session. Other players include Pepper Adams on baritone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – and before you complain, we know that not all of these guys are from Detroit – but that's the way they titled the thing, so you'll have to write to the label! Adams is a bit down in the mix, so he never over-dominates Burrell's tone – but he still gets plenty of space to sparkle on his solos, working with those sharp edges that make his Savoy appearances so great. Titles include "Your Host", "Afternoon In Paris", "Apothegh", "Cottontail", and "Tom's Thumb". CD
