✨✧ Chico HamiltonChico Hamilton Plays Selections From Bye Bye Birdie & Irma La Douce ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Forget the format – as the album's one of those jazz-meets-show albums from the early 60s – and just focus on the sound – as Chico Hamilton really knows how to make the music groovy! The group here is an unusual lineup with Charles Lloyd on flute and sax, plus guitar by Harry Pope, bass by Bobby Haynes, and cello from Nat Gershmann – working with Hamilton in an inventive set of rhythms that really opens up the tunes, while also allowing Lloyd to add a few exotic touches. The best tunes pick up on the modal groove that Chico was sneaking into his work – and titles include "Our Language Of Love", "A Lot Of Living To Do", "Baby Talk To Me", "She's Got The Lot", and "From A Prison Cell". LP, Vinyl record album
(6 eye mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear & aging, tiny top seam split.)

✨✧ Chico HamiltonPassin Thru ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from one of Chico Hamilton's greatest groups! The record features Chico's quintet with Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, the great (and under-recorded) Al Stinson on bass and George Bohannon on trombone – and the tracks have that spaced out, slightly-Spanish tinge that Chico was crafting during his trippier years at Impulse. Szabo's guitar is a key element of this sound – but you can't discount Chico's amazingly open approach to the drums, and his freewheeling manner of spinning out a lively dancing rhythm. Titles include "Lady Gabor", "El Toro", "Passin Thru", and "Lonesome Child". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, & OthersOs Saltimbancos ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the strangest albums in the career of Chico Buarque – and one of the best-remembered too! Os Saltimbancos is a children's play adapted by Buarque from original text by Sergio Bardotti – set to music by Luiz Enriquez Bacalov, and recorded in both Rome and Rio! Most of the album is spoken, with narration by Magro from MPB-4 – and the story is about some unhappy animals that are on their way to the big city to become musicians! The donkey (played by Magro) gets tired of doing hard labor and meets a dog (played by Ruy, another of the MPB-4 guys), a cat (played hilariously by Nara Leao), and a hen (Miucha, the sister of Chico Buarque). The music is pretty strange, and some of the tracks have a sound that's actually kind of avant-poetry, with lots of strange sounds, shouts, and whispers – in a manner that's almost as experimental as it is whimsical. Titles include "Minha Cancao", "Bicharia", "O Jumento", "Todos Juntos", and "A Batalha". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie & MachitoAfro-Cuban Jazz Moods ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". CD

✨✧ Miucha & Antonio Carlos JobimMiucha & Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
RCA/BMG (Brazil), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty darn sweet vocal session from the duo of Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim – recorded with lots of bossa overtones, very much the same spirit as the legendary Elis & Tom album of the mid 70s! Chico Buarque participates in the session, and Jobim even lends his vocal talents to a track or two – but his real talent, though, is his work on the arrangements – as he gives the whole thing a beautifully dreamy quality, in the manner of his best 70s work, with lots of strange off-kilter melodies floating around the mix of strings, piano, and flute! Miucha's vocals are lovely, and titles include "Sei La A Vida Tem Sempre Razao", "Vai Levando", "Comigo E Assim", "Samba Do Aviao", and "Saia Do Caminho". CD

✨✧ Jack MillmanJack Millman & His All Stars ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1955. Used ... $9.99
All stars is right! Fluegelhorn and trumpet player Jack Millman hasn't had very many opportunities to lay sets down as a leader, and used this mid 50s opportunity to it's most ambitious possibility by enlisting the greatest, best known West Coast players of the day! Millman recruited Jimmy Guiffre on tenor, Buddy Collette on flute, Red Mitchell on bass, Shelly Manne and Chico Hamilton on drums, Barney Kessel on guitar, Maynard Furguson on trombone, Conte Candoli on trombone and a host of others on these tunes, most of which utilize eight or more piece settings. Tracks include "Groove Juice", "Pink Lady", "Too Much", "The Turk", "So Goes My Love", "Cathy Goes South" and others. CD

✨✧ Laurindo AlmeidaAcapulco 22 ... LP
Tower, 1967. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from guitarist Laurindo Almeida – a truly wonderful album, played with small combo backing, which gives the set a jazzier feel than usual! Players include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Bob Cooper on tenor, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Shelly Manne, Milt Holland, and Chico Guerro on percussion – and although there's no credits for the arrangements on the album, the overall feel is similar to Roberts best work for Capitol, especially because Rowles' work on organ gives the record such a groovy sound! Titles include "Acapulco 1922", "Misirlou", "Satin Doll", "More", "Till Then", "What Kind Of Fool Am I", and "Desafinado". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has aging, light surface wear, cutout hole.)

✨✧ Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All StarsIt's A Bossa Nova World ... LP
Capitol, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
It's definitely a bossa nova world when Laurindo Almeida's around – given that the player first got the whole sound going in the 50s, then returned the favor in the 60s with some great albums like this for Capitol Records! The set's a bright blend of LA jazz and bossa rhythms – played by a group that also features Howard Roberts on electric guitar, Jimmy Rowles on organ, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Bob Cooper on tenor, and Shelly Manne, Victor Feldman, and Chico Guererro on lots of percussion! Almeida plays guitar and cavaquinho on the session – and titles include "Rio Bonito", "Lisbon Antigua", "More", "Danke Shoen", "Till Then", "Say Wonderful Things", and "Sukiyaki". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has some surface wear, small colored-in peel spot.)
