A beautifully spare session from the mid 70s – one that features bass and cello from Isao Suzuki – stretching out here in a sound that's totally unique! The trio's a great one – with Donald Bailey on drums and Tsuyoshi Yamamoto on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – the latter of which sounds amazing next to Suzuki mellow-stepping lines. If you've heard any of Suzuki's other albums from the period, the style is somewhat similar – quite soulful throughout, but with an easygoing, open feel that's quite different than many American sessions of this nature – and which makes it clear that the bassist is the leader, not the pianist! Titles include a great version of "Manha De Carnaval", plus "Angel Eyes", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Blues". CD

A smoking live set from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – working here not in a small Tokyo club, but on the stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival – where he's clearly drawing inspiration from the global lineup to blow away most of the competition! Tracks are long, and really have Yamamoto hitting hard throughout – drawing strong inspiration from his influences on the American scene, but also showing some deeper, more sensitive styles too – that growing sense of feeling he brought to his music as the 70s wore on – really summed up perfectly here! The trio features Kunimitsu Inaba on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – and titles include "Nanatsu No Ko", "It's All Right With Me", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Girl Of My Dreams", and "A Shade Of Love". Pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto gave us some sublime records in the 70s on the Three Blind Mice label from Japan – and he really continues the spirit of those records here, on a set of tracks that demonstrate that, if anything, his sense of space and timing have gotten even more amazing as the years have gone on! With Yamamoto, it's never a matter of the material he chooses, which is usually common – but the way he puts the tune over while working with a trio – and the way that trio is recorded, which was always a key aspect of Tsuyoshi's records in the 70s. His classic Blues For Tee album was dedicated to his older producer back in the day – as this set is dedicated to Yoshihiko Kannari, who did a great job of capturing the magic from a trio that also features Hiroshi Kagawa on bass and Toshio Osumi on drums. Titles include "You Go To My Head", "Darn That Dream", "Blues In The Closet", "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", "Love Theme From Sunflower", "Gentle Blues", and "Blues For K". A sweet little piano trio set from Yama & Jiro – that's Tsuyoshi Yamamoto on piano and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – joined here by Akira Daiyoshi on some mighty warm bass! The set's got that wonderful open, laidback vibe you sometimes get on these Three Blind Mice sessions from the 70s – a beautiful recording quality that really lets all the subtle, gentle moments come through all with a quality that's oddly different than an American trio session of the time.
