Benny GolsonModern Touch ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used ... $11.99
The modern touch indeed! You can't get any more classic Benny Golson than this – a sublime late 50s album that features Benny with a sextet, working out amazing versions of the sorts of material that set him apart from every other jazz arranger of the time! The tracks here are complicated, yet have a rootsy soulfulness that makes them instantly compelling – and Benny's tone on tenor sax is sharp and angular, yet also has a raspiness that gives it a degree of honesty you wouldn't expect from a budding young modernist. The rest of the players – Max Roach, Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly, JJ Johnson, and Kenny Dorham – are equally great, too – and amidst Benny's arrangements, they come together as if they'd been playing in this format for years! Titles include "Out Of The Past", "Venetian Breeze", "Reunion", "Hymn To The Orient", and "Blues On Down". CD

✨✧ Curtis FullerCurtis Fuller Jazztet With Benny Golson ... CD
Savoy/Denon, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stellar stuff – recorded a few years before Benny Golson started to explore his "jazztet" ideas with Art Farmer, but handled in a very similar mode. The sextet on the session's a crack one – with Charlie Persip, Paul Chambers, and Wynton Kelly on rhythm – and searing horn solos from Fuller, Golson, and a very young Lee Morgan. All tracks are long, and the set includes 2 Fuller originals – "Arabia" and "Judy's Dilemma" – plus "Wheatleigh Hall" and "It's All Right With Me". CD

✨✧ Roland KirkRahsaan – Complete Mercury Recordings Of Roland Kirk (11CD set) ... CD
Mercury, 1960s/1990. Used 11 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful box set, and one that's filled with amazing material by one of our favorite players of all time! Roland Kirk's work for Mercury has always been darn tough to come by on wax, and even though a number of titles have been reissued individually over the years, this box set is still the best way to approach his early and mid 60's work for Mercury and related labels. The set's got a whopping 10 CDs in all – plus a bonus CD of unreleased stuff – and it's filled with rare material, live tracks, big band tracks, and just plain ol' great hard-wailing straight ahead material by Roland. Players on the set include Jaki Byard, Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly, Roy Haynes, Andrew Hill, Elvin Jones, and Horace Parlan. Very nice, and one you won't tire of quickly! CD
(Out of print and in great shape! Discs, book and slipcase are in fantastic shape!!)

✨✧ Lee MorganLee Morgan Vol 3 (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), Late 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hardest to find of the early Lee Morgan albums on Blue Note – and a very lyrical batch of hardbop tracks, played with a slightly exotic flair! Morgan's group on the date features melodic modernists Benny Golson on tenor and Gigi Gryce on alto sax – both of whom push Morgan past his youthful bop approach into more sensitive areas – especially Golson, who wrote and arranged the tunes on the date with a sublime mix of hardbop and deeper musical ideals! Rhythm is from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – and titles include a great reading of Golson's "I Remember Clifford", plus four other originals by Benny – "Hasaan's Dream", "Domingo", "Mesabi Chant", and "Tip Toeing". ✨✧ Lee MorganComplete Blue Note Lee Morgan Fifties Sessions (4CD set) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A box packed with nothing but cracking hard bop! All of Lee Morgan's seminal 50s sides for Blue Note assembled in one package, including the albums Indeed!, Volume Two, Volume Three, City Lights, the Cooker and Candy. Morgan's quite young on these sessions, but his voice is fully formed and he plays with fire throughout, as do the sidemen, who include Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Benny Golson, Gigi Gryce, Bobby Timmons, Philly Joe Jones, Art Taylor, Sonny Clark, Curtis Fuller, and Wynton Kelly. There's 37 tracks in all, spread out over 4 discs, including "Reggie Of Chester", "Little T", "Stand By", "Latin hangover", "D's Fink", "Slightly Hep", "Hasaan's Dream", "I Remember Clifford", "Mesabi Chant", "Domingo", "City Lights", "Kin Folks", "Heavy Dipper", "New-Ma", and "CTA". CD
(Out of print – with box and book, and all CDs in cases – 3 of which are still sealed! Box has one very small mark, but is great overall.)

✨✧ Conte Candoli & Lee MorganDouble Or Nothin' ... CD
Liberty/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great reissue of one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by crack drummer Charlie Persip, though you might miss that as it's issued here under Conte Candoli and Lee Morgan's names! Morgan and Candoli share the front line on only two tracks, and the set was originally issued as one of Howard Rumsey's "Lighthouse Series" sides of the 50s – but it's a lot harder-driving and more energy-filled than most of the other Lighthouse-related sides coming out of LA at the time. Half the record features Persip's group – a set of east coasters that includes Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Wynton Kelly – and the other part features some of the players from that ensemble mixing it up with Candoli, drummer Stan Levey and other LA talents that include Frank Rosolino, Bob Cooper, and others. In all, the album's a great meeting of east and west coast hardbop styles – with short driving tracks that include "Reggie Of Chester", "Celedia", "Moto", "The Champ", and "Wildwood". CD

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie At Newport (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent live set – featuring great work by some of Dizzy's best sidemen of the late 50's! The ensemble is razor sharp, in that hip post-bop way that Dizzy was developing in the 50s, before moving into his Latin groove years of the early 60s. Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell, and Wynton Kelly all get a chance to solo nicely, and the tracks include renditions of "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin". Features three long bonus tracks too! CD

A strong early winner from Blue – recorded with an all-star group that includes Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones. Mitchell's not necessarily the leader – Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath handled the arrangements – but the group overall is great, and the set has a nice mix of lyricality and hard bop groove. 9 numbers in all, including "Minor Vamp", "The Head", "Top Shelf", "Blue Soul", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Park Avenue Petite", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Nica's Dream", and "Waverly Street". ✨✧ Al Grey, Lee Morgan, Billy Mitchell, & OthersDizzy Atmosphere ... CD
Specialty/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really classic session – one that features an all-star lineup of players who were in the Dizzy Gillespie band of the mid 50s – stepping out here in a smaller group on their own for a one-off date on the Specialty Records label! Specialty normally recorded R&B at the time, but they knock it out of the park with this one – really letting the players stretch out with lots of soulful energy – in a lineup that includes the young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – plus the fantastic Billy Root on baritone – a really great player who only recorded a bit back in the day! Arrangements are nice and hip – done by Benny Golson and Roger Spotts – and titles include "About Time", "DDT", "Whisper Not", and the very long "Dishwater" – a nice uptempo workout, Dizzy style! CD
