Charlotte Dos SantosCleo ... CD
Fresh Selects, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Charlotte Dos Santos is a hell of a singer, and one with a really amazing range – able to float to the top of heavenly spaces with her light inflections in the music, but also tied strongly to the planet with a mellow-stepping soulful groove! The blend of lightness and depth here is wonderful – a nice change from the usual underground soul material, as is Charlotte's lyrical approach – almost as lightly poetic as her voice, but more solid too – with a vibe that's completely unique, and which (we hope!) means that we'll be hearing plenty from her in years to come! The album's got this wonderful recasting of Freddie Hubbard's classic "Red Clay" – plus the tracks "Summer Is Icumen In", "Good Sign", "King Of Hearts", "It's Over Bobby", "Watching You", and "Move On". Stephen Emmer & OthersHome Ground ... CD
Stephen Emmer (Netherlands), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Stephen Emmer delivers an incredible record with this set – an album that's inspired by the classic blend of symphonic soul and powerful commentary in the music of artists like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Bill Withers – but handled here with a sound that's completely Emmer's own! Stephen gets help on vocals from a legendary lineup of singers – artists who include Chaka Kahn, Dwight Trible, Ursula Rucker, Frank McComb, Andy Bey, Leon Ware, Patti Austin, and Mary Griffin – all of whom are woven into Emmer's larger musical vision in sound – at a level that almost evokes the power of the most righteous music from the Cadet Records scene in Chicago at the end of the 60s, but which also has a contemporary crackle that makes the whole thing immediately resonant. This isn't a rehash of older soul modes at all – and instead, like maybe some of the best London sounds over the past 20 years, it's a perfect illustration of the way the right artists can be influenced by the classics, but make completely new sounds that are all their own – and in doing so, really help continue to move soul music forward into the future. Titles include "A New Day To Come", "Close To Life", "Soul Glow", "Home Ground", "Everybody's Movin", "Under Your Spell", "Soil", "Own Again", "Pangea", "God It's Hot Today", and "Yesterday Oh Yesterday". KingWe Are King ... CD
King Creative, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
One of the best female soul groups we've heard in years – and one of the few who've really found a way to come up with a fresh new sound of their own! King blend together three singers with this style that's really spacious, and almost cosmic – not too far-out to ever lose the groove, but with a slightly trippy quality that's reflected in the way the group are pictured on the cover. The mode's not traditional R&B harmony, nor typical girl group soul – and instead it's got this righteous sense of flow that bubbles, dips, and soars throughout the entire album – more than enough space for a lead singer to take off when needed, then step back into the wider progression of sound. A real treasure – with titles that include "The Right One", "Red Eye", "Carry On", "Mister Chameleon", "Oh Please", "Native Land", and extended mixes of "Supernatural", "Hey", and "The Story". CD

Lady WrayQueen Alone ... CD
Big Crown, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
A stunning full length debut from Lady Wray – a voice you might know from her previous collaboration in the duo Lady – but one that's even more amazing out front here on her own! The album's got a rock-solid, totally classic vibe – thanks to Leon "El" Michels – who produced, and provided most of the music with his group – a completely funky ensemble, but one that's also right up to the sense of majesty that Wray brings to her vocals – a soaring, righteous spirit that's way beyond the easy cliches or retro modes of so many other funky singers. Instead, the lady has a way of doing things that's all her own – a knowledge of all the places that R&B-influenced vocals have gone in recent decades, but packed into a simple, straightforward sound that's a perfect fit with Michels' music. Better than we could have hoped – with titles that include "Smiling", "Do It Again", "They Won't Hang Around", "Bad Girl", "Let It Go", "Cut Me Loose", and "Make Me Over". (Deep Funk, Neo Soul) CD

✨✧ OmarLove In Beats ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Omar's been blowing our minds for years now – turning out some of the freshest soul music on the global scene – from his tremendous debut at the start of the 90s, to a range of crucially-overlooked albums that should have made the singer huge! The man's a hell of a singer, and a really great songwriter – easily a modern-day Stevie Wonder, right down to his skills on the keyboards and cosmic sense of soul! This album's got Omar sounding especially wonderful – working with a few key guests, like Robert Glasper, Leon Ware, Natasha Watts, and The Floacist – but reminding us again that it's the man at the core who makes all the music so great – as the guests appear only as key added elements, but the Omar sound is more than enough to make the record great. Titles include "Vicky's Tune", "Feeds My Mind", "Insatiable", "Gave My Heart", "Girl Talk", "I Want It To Be", "Hold Me Closer", "This Way That Way", "Destiny", and "Doobie Doobie Doo". CD
