A wide-ranging look at the talents of August Darnell – an artist who's probably best known to the world as Kid Creole, but who also had a hand in a number of other dancefloor acts of the late 70s and early 80s! All tracks here have that trademark August Darnell groove – a good ear for jazzy, playful rhythms – often with styles borrowed from previous decades in the 20th century, retooled with hipper, leaner styles for the time! Darnell was one of the first to actively reach back into the past for ideas to use on the dancefloor – and although the practice is quite common now, the tracks here have a sound that few contemporary artists could ever hope to match. And when he wanted to, Darnell could also hit a club groove as great as any other artists on the New York scene of the late 70s – a pulsing, hypnotic approach to rhythm that was probably best know from his side projects on Ze Records. Great stuff from global funk phenoms Nomo – deftly blending Afro steeped funk with an astral reach – with more of a spiritual jazz influence and off kilter avant touches! Invisible Cities arrives just about a year since their breakthrough Ghost Rock opened so many doors, and although productivity and consistency have never been a problem with Elliot Bergman & co, we're still pretty awestruck – especially given that Ghost Rock set the bar pretty high! Blazing horns, dynamic rhythms and rapturous percussion galore, with the electric kalimba still defining the group's identity nicely, with lots of sweaty funk, more spacious spiritual jazz atmosphere, and a couple of choice covers – Moondog's "Bumba" gets a bit of Caribbean funk treatment with steel drums, plus a reverent take on Tom Ze's "Ma"! The long awaited return of Brazilian iconoclasts Os Mutantes – featuring original Mutante Sergio Dias and a great new band – plus songwriting contributions from Tom Ze and Jorge Ben – a forward looking endeavor, not at all a nostalgia trip! It's been around 30 years since the previous Os Mutantes album, and the never predictable Dias sounds as fresh and energized as we hoped he'd be – with bright, catchy-as-hell melodies, wildly playful carnivalesque sounds as well as more rootsy acoustic bits, on songs that fearlessly blend genres and influences. It's hard to imagine that we'll ever love records from Mutantes, or anyone else in any genre, as much as we love the late 60s stuff – but this is excellent, and among the better Mutantes records since the Rita Lee era. The second set of madness from the legendary Os Mutantes – and like the first, an album done in close collaboration with arranger/producer Rogerio Duprat, whose talents add a new level of genius to the record! The album's got a compelling mix of styles that strikes out on the very first tune – a playful pastiche that's partly postmodern, partly psychedelic, and still tremendously powerful decades later – even if you can't understand most of the lyrics! Styles are just about impossible to pin down, but that's what makes the record so unique and essential – and if you ever needed one album to convince you of the mindblowing energy taking place during the Tropicalia years, this one may well be it! A really early moment of greatness from the young Jose Roberto Bertrami – the legendary keyboardist who'd soon rise to fame in Azymuth, stepping out here in a sweet bossa jazz combo from the 60s! Bertrami handles the arrangements, and delivers lots of piano lines too – and the group features some equally nice organ from Aresky Aratto, next to contributions from Og Vasconcelos on tenor and Ivo Mendes on trumpet – both players who really up the jazzy current of the album! The group also features bass and drums – and the songs are tight, groovy, and very much on the money throughout. A never-issued performance from this legendary Brazilian musician – a live concert that's a perfect addition to his tremendous records from the same stretch in time! As with some of his best material of the 70s, Hermeto's working here in a style that begins in jazz, but quickly moves into something else – a very special space and sound of his own, driven by an offbeat approach to rhythm, and really unusual instrumental phrasing that often takes familiar elements and has them coming out in very fresh ways! The style isn't avant garde, as there's a sense of swing and rhythm to most numbers here – but Pascoal's definitely pushing the boundaries and developing a rich vision of his own - with help from a great group of younger players that include Jovino Santos Neto on keyboards, Carlos Malta on soprano and flute, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums and percussion. Hermeto blows the cool baritone horn pictured on the cover, plus tenor and flute as well – on titles that include "Samba Do Belaqua", "Bombardino", "Vou Pra La E Pra Ca", "Ferrangens", "Jegue", "Duo De Bateras", "Sao Jorge/Ilza Na Veijoada", and "Era Pra Ser Nao Foi". A never-issued album by the great Hermeto Pascoal – recorded in the space between his 70s classics Slaves Mass and A Musica Livre – and every bit as amazing as those classics! The music here is fluid, open, and a fantastic mix of jazz and all of Hermeto's new ideas about musical structure – performed at a level that's highly organic, and with that completely individual vision that Pasocal brought to his sound from the start! This isn't typical Brazilian fusion of the time, but nor is it anything like the tighter sounds that Airto and Flora Purim were recording up in the US – instead, a musical mode that's completely in its own space, and which needs only one listen to convince you of the master's genius. The group here is overflowing with young talent – Lelo Nazario on keyboards, Nivaldo Ornelas and Mauro Senise on saxes and flute, Toninho Horta on guitar, Zeca Assumpcao on bass, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums – all important musical visionaries on their own, working together here to hit an even new level of creativity. Aleuda Chaves sings wordlessly on a bit of the record – and the whole thing has that blend of soaring sound and lyricism that marks Pascoal at his best. A sweet 70s set recorded in Lisbon, but with roots in Cape Verde – the original home of Pedrinho before he recorded this debut album at the age of 18! The tunes all have this joyous, skittish sort of energy – groove that bubble on up from down at the bottom, woven through nicely with lots of fast-riffing guitar – all at a pace that's even more deft than some of the guitar-based grooves from West Africa at the time! Pedrinho sings and plays keyboards – almost always sounding as if he's completely caught up in the grooves himself, and just responding to the motion of the music. Kind of a silly name, but a really great group – and one without any of the hoke you might expect! The sound is definitely what's promised, a meeting of samba rhythms and older American jazz – but there's a breezy sort of warmth to the record that's light years from standard boogie woogie – much more in the warmest territory that you'd find in Brazilian jazz from the 70s onwards! The tunes are mostly older Brazilian numbers, and they've got a slight hint of nostalgia – but one that's very small, and flavored more by the younger energy of the musicians and singers in the project. Vocalists include Monica Salmaso, Roberto Sa, Mario Adnet, Ze Renato, and Maucha Adnet – and arrangements are by Mario Adnet, and mostly feature small combo jazz instrumentation.
