CartolaPrograma Ensaio 1974 – TV Cultura (DVD) ... DVD DVD format
Studio Canal (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
Cartola makes a wonderful appearance on the Ensaio TV show – proving to be a perfect fit for the relaxed, intimate nature of the program! Given that most of Cartola's samba work of the 70s is already quite personal, the up-close nature of Ensaio's filming only brings that aspect out even more – by offering strong focus on Cartola's face as he speaks and sings his tunes, shot in very muted black and white tones. A young Leci Brandao makes a vocal appearance on about a third of the tracks on the show – and titles include "Preferencia", "Pensando Em Donga", "Alvorada", "Fita Meus Olhos", "Ao Amahecer", "Eu Sou Mangueira", and "Sim". DVD is 58 minutes, in black and white, in Portuguese. DVD

Maria BethaniaCarta De Amor (DVD) ... DVD DVD format
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... $9.99
Right from the start, Maria Bethania showed herself as an artist who could almost shine better in a live setting than a studio one – from her early records, to famous albums that helped define the sound of MPB, to recent gems like this one – which has the singer still very much at the height of her powers! Maria's got this commanding presence that makes us hang upon each and every word – yet she also finds a way to never push things too far, or ever sound like she's forcing her emotion – a quality that may well come from the album's backings from Wagner Tiso, who gives Bethania the same sort of quiet drama he brought to Milton Nascimento's music back in the 70s. The passage of years have done nothing to hold back Maria's tremendous vocals – and the DVD features all the music from both volumes of the CD – with titles that include "Cancoes E Momentos", "Sangrando", "Salmo", "Na Primeira Manha", "Maria Maria", "Cais", "Calunia", "A Dona Do Raio E Do Vento", "Fera Ferida", "Festa", "Lua Branca", "Viola Meu Bem", "Carta De Amor", "Minha Senhora", "Mensagem", and "Quixabeira Reconvexo".
