✨✧ Kristen NoguesMarc'h Gouez ... CD
Nevenoe/Souffle Continu (France), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A record with a folksy style at the core, but one that comes across with a really hip hybrid of influences – a lot more like something from early 70s Saravah Records than you might expect from the image of a Celtic harp on the cover! Kristen Nogues does play that instrument, and sings alongside it in Breton – but she's supported with modern, light arrangements that include guitar, piano, flute, cello, violin, and bassoon – all used in ways that are unconventional, and certainly not folksy – almost bringing a New York modern music quality to the record – ala ECM or other labels' recordings of the time. The voice and harp are incredible in this setting – and titles include "Ar Gemenerez", "Hunvre", "Enez Rouz", "Ar Bugel Koar", "Hirness An Devezhiou", and "Pinvidik Eo Va C'Hemener". CD

Jane BirkinJane Birkin – Integral Live (15CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 15CDs ... $58.99 69.99
A great document of the way that Jane Birkin really flourished in the second half of her musical career, especially in the years after the passing of Serge Gainsbourg – a time when Birkin was emerging to be one of the real giants of French music on her own, as testified to in the power of this series of live performances! The Jane Birkin here is very different than the breathy voice next to Serge on her early recordings – and instead, she commands the stage with the presence of singers like Maria Bethania or Gal Costa – maybe no surprise, as the very generous presentation of these performances will attest. The box brings together live sets from 1987 up to 2023 – albums that include Au Bataclan, Au Casino De Paris, A L'Olympia, En Concert Au Japon, Arabesque, Au Palace, Sings Serge Gainsbourg Via Japan, Le Symphonique Live, and Oh Pardon Tu Dormais. Serge GainsbourgL'Homme A Tete De Chou (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (France), 1976. New Copy 2CDs ... $27.99 34.99
One of Serge Gainsbourg's best albums ever – a set that we love every bit as much as his Melody Nelson classic, or his killer records with Jane Birkin! The set was recorded in the mid 70s, and it features amazing orchestrations from Alan Hawkshaw – backings that are even better than Hawk's previous sound library work, and which are filled with loads of cool spare moogy and electronic bits filtering in and out of the mix! Some tracks bubble with the same brooding brilliance and funky touches that you'd find on the Melody Nelson album – and others have a uniquely spacey quality that's unlike any of his other work! Tracks include "Transit A Marilou", "Aeroplanes", "Variations Sur Marilou", "Premiers Symptomes", and "Lunatic Asylum". A great record – and one of the first of Serge's that we'd recommend! 2CD version features a whole bonus set of instrumental tracks from the album sessions – and alternate versions of "Transit A Marilou", "Lunatic Asylum", "Meurtre A L'Extincteur", and "Ma Lou Marilou". Francis LaiEmmanuelle 2 – L'Anti Verge (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Seven Seas/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99 About March 27, 2024 (delayed)
A sleazy film, but one with some really great music from Francis Lai – the composer better known for his mainstream contributions to classics like A Man & A Woman and Live For Life! In any setting, Lai displays an amazing genius for spare tunes that hit a lyrical chord and a warmly sentimental mode – never one that's sleepy or drippy, but just the right balance of sounds and rhythms to convey a tremendous amount with very little. Lai plays a fair bit of keyboards here, lightly electric, and relatively spare – but not as much so as on some of his other 70s soundtracks. (Soundtracks, French) CD
