✨✧ VariousDecca Sound – The Mono Years 1944 to 1956 (53CD box set) ... CD
Decca, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy 53CD ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from one of the greatest classical labels of the postwar years – all presented here in glorious mono! Decca's stereo work was strong right out of the box, but we also really treasure the boldness of their mono years – a time when the label had a strong ear for subtle drama, and was able to bring out a richness in classical performances that would have been undreamed of a few short years before – especially as the label moved into fuller LP-length performances. This box brings together all the best highlights from these years – including a number of titles that are appearing on CD for the first time ever – all in these mini LP-styled sleeves that have the look and feel of vintage records from the time. The repertoire is heavy on music from the romantic years, but also features early music and surprising modern moments too – with soloists who include Clifford Curzon, Friedrich Gulda Wilhelm Backhaus, Ruggiero Ricci, Pierre Fournier, and Quartetto Italiano – and conductors who include Georg Solti, Sir Adrian Boult, and Eduard Van Beinum. 53 CDs in all – and a really beautiful package! ✨✧ VariousMercury Living Presence 3 (53CD box set) ... CD
Mercury, 1950s/1960s. New Copy 53CD box set ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best volume so far in this wonderful series – Universal's repressing of vintage Mercury Living Presence albums in limited boxes with original LP-styled sleeves! The titles here include some of the more unusual, more obscure Living Presence titles – 10 of which appear here on CD for the first time, others pulled from the well-mastered 90s run of reissues – and the set even includes four titles that were issued on Philips, but done by the Mercury team – which makes for a great addition. Many of the works are conducted by the Mercury heavyweights – Antal Dorati, Paul Paray, and Howard Hanson – and the range of composers includes Lalo, Dvorak, Franck, Bloch, Gerswhin, Berlioz, Tchiakovsky, Rimsky Korasakov, and Handel – with a bit less of the vocal or "gimmicky" performances that sometimes showed up on the label. Repertoire is rock-solid throughout – and the package comes with a heavy book that offers notes on each title too! CD
