A great move in a fresh direction for the Flaming Groovies – a set that has the group working with producer Dave Edmunds, and hitting this sweet power pop sort of sound! The Groovies still have all the tight energy of before – but they also seem to be paying tribute to an older vintage of British material – as evidenced by their 60s look on the cover, and the album's back cover parody of a stance by The Beatles! The short tracks are plenty tuneful, and Edmunds has a way of compressing the fuzz down tightly, but never in a way that makes things sound slick or commercial. Vocal chorus bits are especially great – surprisingly catchy, almost in a Brit Invasion way – and titles include "Shake Some Action", "You Tore Me Down", "I Saw Her", "Teenage Confidential", "I Can't Hide", "She Said Yeah", and "Sometimes". The start of an amazing run for The Smiths – a record that not only put the group on the map, but forever set a new standard for Brit pop in the 80s! There's a great mix of rough edges and softer emotions going on here – that trademark balance between the guitar of Johnny Marr and vocals of Morrissey – still ultra-fresh at this point, and freely voicing thoughts and feelings that might have been cloaked in more clumsy expressions a few years before. Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. A bit of a back to basics set from The Ramones – not exactly the raw punk of their roots, but a nicely stripped-down record that really has them doing the sorts of lean, tight material they always do best! The production is lean, but also has some of those currents that echo the way the group were such an important influence on so many others in the generation – maybe in part because of the way the guitars are recorded, with sort of Sire Records approach to a solo that so many others would pick up and use on records throughout the decade. A great late 80s return to form for Lou Reed – a record set in a New York that's a bit different than the gritty one of his youth, but which is captured here by Lou with that vivid sense of songwriting that always made his urban themes some of the best in rock and roll! The set's designed to be listened to straight through – like a book or a movie, Lou mentions in the notes – and the songs are set to well-crafted guitar work mostly by Reed, augmented with work from Mike Rathke – delivered in a vocal style that's found a newly-confident way of moving between singing and speech. An unusual later album from Witch – one that has a sweet funky style at the core – a mode that shows the group picking up a fair bit of disco and club from the American scene, and fusing it with their older Zamrock styles to create a really unique sound overall! At times, the record echoes some of the Euro disco records of the late 70s – but there's also a deeper current to the record too, especially on some of the more personal tunes. Keyboards take over more than guitar at times – and although the group's name originally meant "We Intend To Create Havoc", this record might have changed the meaning to "We Intend To Create Happiness". A really dark little sound library album – but maybe that's what you would have guessed from a record that has satan in the title! The music here is almost a stripped-down, compressed approach to some of the territory that Goblin were bringing to their early soundtracks – lots of keyboards, guitar, and other electric elements – used in styles that move between spare and moody, to more compressed and intense – the latter especially on songs that pick up the rhythms a bit, but in a way that's far from the more familiar post-disco grooves of the Italian slasher scene. Fabio Fabor wrote and performed the entire set – with instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, Arp, and vocoder – on titles that include "Dies Irae", "Stige", "Trillo De Diavolo", "Dalle Sirene", "Diabolic Love", "Caronte", "Segno Di Fuoco" "Ad Inferos", and "Acheron". Scott Walker's first album as a solo act – and an incredible set that's light years ahead of his earlier work with The Walker Brothers! Gone are the simple, straightforward pop tunes – and in their place is a more sophisticated mode of work – one inspired by the French pop of Jacques Brel, the cinema of Ingmar Bergman, and a host of other contemporary influences simmer in young Scott's head! The vocals are tremendous – more mature and balanced than ever before – clearly showing Walker's desire to ascend into the ranks of great male singers of the 20th Century, yet not in a way that's cloyingly poppish. Arrangements are great too – handled by Brit easy maestros Reg Guest, Peter Knight, and Wally Stott – and the tracks include the classic originals "Such A Small Love", "Montague Terrace", and "Always Coming Back To You" – plus versions of Jacque Brel's "Mathilde", "Amsterdam", and "My Death" – as well as "Angelica", "The Big Hurt", and "When Joanna Loved Me". A really great solo project from Charles Prest of Flamingods – a set that's got a completely compelling mix of psychedelic elements, contemporary beats, and some of the fuzzier sounds of the UK scene in the 80s! There's definitely a resonance here with that 80s moment when folks started to re-embrace psych after the punk years – but Charles also filters it through a more 21st Century vibe – creating these cool little songs that are very personal, and with a quirky vibe that really fits his image on the cover! Prest wrote, performed, and produced the whole album himself – and titles include "Annapura Guest House", "Blue Jurdab", "Villa", "Desiree", "Budaiya", "Decca Divine", "Beulah Spa", and "Dud Day". The genius first album from Gary Numan and Tubeway Army – a set that stripped down all sorts of influences from the early part of the 70s, filtered them through a punkish sort of energy, and came up with a great antidote to some of the more overblown projects from years before! There's plenty to love here if you love Bowie in Berlin, or the offbeat spirit of Roxy Music – yet the record's far more than just a second chapter to that generation – as Numan and the group have a way of sounding colder and more sinister, and really helping give birth to a spirit that so many others would steal in years to come! If you only know Numan's later solo work, you'll be nicely surprised here by the sharper edge and sometimes heavier guitar – an instrument played along with keyboards by Numan, with help from Jess Lidyard on drums and Paul Gardiner on bass. Numan produced the whole thing himself, with further genius energy in the studio – and titles include "Are You Real", "Listen To The Sirens", "Everyday I Die", "The Life Machine", "Shadow In Vain", "Jo The Water", and "The Dream Police".
