A really cool concept album from the Chicago scene of the late 60s – a set that has dreamy sunshine pop harmonies blended with some darker psychedelic elements – all at a level that resonates strongly with the Dunwich production the whole thing received! There's almost a UK late 60s vibe to the whole thing, although the harmonies are pure US sunshine too – served up by a variation of The Castaways, who you'll know from earlier catchy classics! Guitar lines – both acoustic and electric – and other production elements provide a nicely sinister core – and the whole thing is a lost gem really worth rediscovering. An unusual little set from Pennsylvania's Case – a group who were decidedly younger and maybe geekier than some of their heady contemporaries in the early 70s underground – and who come across here with a garagey vibe that maybe recalls indie sets from the decade before! The album was recorded on a four track in the group's school music classroom over Christmas break – which gives the whole thing a nice sense of "room", and a relatively live feel – more like you were catching these youthful cats starting to practice before a gig. Amazing sounds from British pianist Keith Tippett – a startling crossroads of musical scenes that beautifully brings together the best jazz, rock, and jazz rock impulses on the UK scene at the time – still with a freshness and clarity that the work would never reach a few years later! The sound here is brilliant – often a bit funky at the bottom, and definitely stretching out to freer jazz ideas on the solos, yet always managing a sense of soul and swing that really gives the record a rock solid core – so that even loopy lines seem to land back on the ground, and set the group on fire with a whole new energy. An overlooked female singer/songwriter from the start of the 70s – one with a sound that's decidedly more underground than some of her contemporaries! Kathy Smith has a sound that's sometimes as sweet as some of the pop folk females of the time, yet she's backed with music that's usually a bit more personal, and almost boozy at times – kind of an intimate, late night small combo approach that's almost to her style of music what a piano trio might be to vocal jazz. That's not saying that Kathy's jazzy at all – as there's a decidedly rock feel here – but there's a mature, sophisticated vibe that's totally great – warmly expressive without sounding cliched. An imagined soundtrack to a journey through London in the generation of Get Carter and Carnaby Street – and one that showcases not just the rich array of sounds and styles that were taking place in the city at the time, and in a way that highlights all sorts of different locations around town! A legendary live performance from these three key members of the Velvet Underground – reunited on stage for a televised concert in Paris in 1972, and sounding really amazing together! Although Lou's star was the highest at the time, and Cale was releasing some incredible solo material, the overall vibe is maybe in the moody slowness of some of Nico's own recordings – very dark and spare, given that most of the instrumentation is just Cale on piano and viola, Reed on guitar, and Nico on harmonium – that spooky instrument that always seemed to bring out the best in her vocals!
