Nina SimoneRemixed & Reimagined ... LP
RCA/Legacy, Late 60s/Early 70s/2006. Near Mint- (reissue)... $29.99
A full set's worth of remixes of older Nina Simone tunes – served up hot on the heels of the big success of Simone songs from the Verve Remixed series! Ulike the Verve series, the work here is all pulled from Nina's RCA recordings of the late 60s and early 70s – some of her hippest work on record, and even better suited to this sort of modernization, given that the themes and styles of the originals were often years ahead of their time! There's a bit of a laidback feel to most of the mixes, one that sometimes diffuses the power of Nina's righteous intentions – but there's also some tracks here that are a lot more respectful of the originals than other sets of this nature. Titles include "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter (Jazzeem's All Styles rmx)", "Here Comes The Sun (Francois K rmx)", "Obeah Woman (DJ Logic rmx)", "Ooh Child (Nickodemus rmx)", "Turn Me On (Tony Humphries got U turned on dub)", "To Love Someone (Chris Coco's stadium rocker rmx)", and "My Man's Gone Now (DJ Wally rmx)." Flying LotusYou're Dead! (with download) ... LP
Warp, 2014. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 24.99
Flying Lotus is not only very much alive on You're Dead! – he's as lively as ever – delivering his best, most diverse record to date! The Flying Lotus sound is in peak form here – glitchy beats and spacey keyboards, deftly layered samples, and carrying boundless influences from cosmic soul jazz to leftfield hip hop! An impressive guest roster from both realms participate – with appearances by Herbie Hancock (!!!), Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, frequent collaborator and stylistic sibling Thundercat, strings arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson and others. Standout moments include the tracks "Tesla" and "Moment Of Hesitation", both with some incredible keyboards by Herbie Hancock, plus the uber-moody, Ennio Morricone-sampled "Turtles" – but the whole thing is great, and shows that the Flying Lotus phenomenon is still in ascension, circa 2014. Other cuts include "Cold Dead", "Never Catch Me" with Kendrick Lamar, "Dead Man's Tetris" with Snoop Dogg, "Turkey Dog Coma", "Stirring", "Obligatory Cadence", "The Protest" and more. ✨✧ JameszooFool ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A bright blend of abstract electronics and leftfield jazz from Dutch experimentalist Mitchel Van Dinther, aka Jamezoo – and one more significant reminder that the Brainfeeder label is home to some of the best, most creative modern instrumental music of the past couple decades! After the Flying Lotus, Thundercat , Kamasi Washington and other Brainfeeder epiphanies, you could be forgiven for wondering if the label had peaked already, but Jameszoo belongs in that esteemed company – really! Synths and electronic errata are blended with a lot of different live instruments in unpredictable, definitely abstract, but oddly cohesive ways here that are unlike anything else exactly, but definitely in the universe of Flying Lotus the Brainfeeder camp. Cosmic electronics arranged with strings, percussion, horns, guitar and a wide range of other instruments, even occasional vocals, depending on the needs of the track at hand – and it's pretty amazing! Guests include Arthur Verocai and Steve Kuhn, which should give you a hint of how expansive the vibe is – and the titles include "Flake", "Lose", "Soup", "Flue" featuring guitar by Arthur Verocai, "Wrong", "Meat", "The Zoo" with Rhodes and vocals by Steve Kuhn, "Crumble", "Toots" and "Teeth". Natalia LafourcadeHasta La Raiz ... CD
Sony, 2015. New Copy ... $9.99
A really wonderful record from this up-and-coming singer – a set that features Spanish language lyrics throughout, but has this universal appeal right from the very first note! Natalia's got a way of crossing generations and styles with her music – a bit like some of the best creative work we've dug from Brazil in recent years, from artists like Kassin and some of his contemporaries. And the retro look of the cover is well-placed – because this is classic stuff that's very different from other contemporary Latin pop, and which has currents of jazz, bossa, and other warmer styles in the music – all a perfect match for Lafourcade's dreamy voice! Titles include "Vamanos Negrito", "Para Que Sufrir", "Hasta La Raiz", "Lo Que Construimos", "Estoy Lista", and "No Mas Lllorar". (Latin, New Grooves) CD

Newmath, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99
A spacey, still soul-steeped bit of abstract beatcraft and vocals by Norvis Junior – a debut EP that should catapult him to the kind of acclaim you see from cats on the Brainfeeder camps and other progressive acts, circa the mid teens! Includes "Not Normal", "More Shakers", "ODB", WronWay2Love", "Kissin On Your Back", "Believers" and "Wave01". LP, Vinyl record album
