Giorgio MoroderDeja Vu ... CD
RCA, 2015. Used ... $3.99
A huge comeback album from electronic pop pioneer/avant disco trailblazer Giorgio Morodor! The post-millennium resurgence in critical and commercial dues being paid to Giorgio has been a pretty heartening thing to see over the years, and it's all the more pleasing that's culminated in a major album that's worthy of his legacy. To his credit, it's not purely deja vu – while there's plenty of spacey elements from throughout his legendary career, it's got a very contemporary sheen – this isn't a cat content to repeat himself. SO many artists whose work is steered towards dancefloors and steeped in electronics owe much to Morodor – and many of them are guest stars here – including Sia, Kylie Minogue, Kelis, Britney Spears, Charli XCX and more. Titles include "U With Love", "Deja Vu" with Sia, "Diamonds" wtih Charli XCX, Don't Let Go" with Mikky Ekko, "Back & Forth" with Kelis, "I Do This For You" with Marlene La Disco and more. DJ ShadowEndtroducing (3CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Island, 1996. New Copy 3 CDs ... $39.99 49.98
Massive 20th Anniversary edition of DJ Shadow's masterpiece! It seems like when this came out, critics and even DJs liked to drop the then new moniker "trip hop" whenever possible, and this pivotal album is held up as the watershed mark. A number of years down the line, Endtroducing holds up stands the test of time as an instrumental hip hop LP, and even sort of an avant rock album – giving it a timeless feel that obliterates any trendy pigeonholes! Cinematic and epic in scope, this LP as much as anything else helped resurrect the career of David Axelrod (though some of us were hip to him all along) and Josh Davis is clearly a fellow traveler in the coloristic approach he uses – and never forgets the funk! This great 3CD edition includes the classic original album on Disc One – with "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt", "The Number Song", "Changeling", "What Does Your Soul Look Like (pts 1 & 4)" and "Midnight In A Perfect World" – the bonus album Excessive Ephemera on Disc Two – and the all new (circa 2016) remix album Endtroducing Re-Emagined on Disc Three – with remixes by Adrian Younge, Lee Bannon,. Hudson Mohawke, Daedelus and others! (Hip Hop, New Grooves) CD

Flying LotusYou're Dead! (with download) ... LP
Warp, 2014. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 24.99
Flying Lotus is not only very much alive on You're Dead! – he's as lively as ever – delivering his best, most diverse record to date! The Flying Lotus sound is in peak form here – glitchy beats and spacey keyboards, deftly layered samples, and carrying boundless influences from cosmic soul jazz to leftfield hip hop! An impressive guest roster from both realms participate – with appearances by Herbie Hancock (!!!), Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, frequent collaborator and stylistic sibling Thundercat, strings arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson and others. Standout moments include the tracks "Tesla" and "Moment Of Hesitation", both with some incredible keyboards by Herbie Hancock, plus the uber-moody, Ennio Morricone-sampled "Turtles" – but the whole thing is great, and shows that the Flying Lotus phenomenon is still in ascension, circa 2014. Other cuts include "Cold Dead", "Never Catch Me" with Kendrick Lamar, "Dead Man's Tetris" with Snoop Dogg, "Turkey Dog Coma", "Stirring", "Obligatory Cadence", "The Protest" and more. JameszooFool ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
A bright blend of abstract electronics and leftfield jazz from Dutch experimentalist Mitchel Van Dinther, aka Jamezoo – and one more significant reminder that the Brainfeeder label is home to some of the best, most creative modern instrumental music of the past couple decades! After the Flying Lotus, Thundercat , Kamasi Washington and other Brainfeeder epiphanies, you could be forgiven for wondering if the label had peaked already, but Jameszoo belongs in that esteemed company – really! Synths and electronic errata are blended with a lot of different live instruments in unpredictable, definitely abstract, but oddly cohesive ways here that are unlike anything else exactly, but definitely in the universe of Flying Lotus the Brainfeeder camp. Cosmic electronics arranged with strings, percussion, horns, guitar and a wide range of other instruments, even occasional vocals, depending on the needs of the track at hand – and it's pretty amazing! Guests include Arthur Verocai and Steve Kuhn, which should give you a hint of how expansive the vibe is – and the titles include "Flake", "Lose", "Soup", "Flue" featuring guitar by Arthur Verocai, "Wrong", "Meat", "The Zoo" with Rhodes and vocals by Steve Kuhn, "Crumble", "Toots" and "Teeth".
