Irma (Italy), 1995. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A classic bit of funk from the Italian scene of the 90s – and a record that first gave the world a taste of all the great sounds to come! At the time of this release, Italy was mostly known for its club and house tracks – yet some of the hipper musicians on the scene had also been digging the modes going down on the UK scene, and were starting to craft some funk and soul of their own – sounds that would flourish famously on the Schema label a few years later, but which were first put forth by Irma on records like this. There's a strong Brit funk vibe going on here – but also some richer currents that move back towards the 70s US scene, and some unusual jazzy flourishes too – with solos on tenor, flute, and even a bit of guest trombone from Fred Wesley too. Ce Ce Rogers sings on a few tracks – and titles include a great remake of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto", plus groovy originals like "Theme From JFK", "Fly Love Song", "Fluid", "Say It Again", "Find Your State Of Mind", and "Moai Message".
