✨✧ Monday MichiruSoulception ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Monday Michiru – quite possibly her greatest album in years, and one that really draws together all the best elements of her style! The vocals are wonderful – soaring, fluid, and filled with soul – almost more confident than ever – and set to these small group jazz arrangements that still bounce around with lots of contemporary rhythms – yet all played live, almost in a clubjazz mode – which makes for a perfect backdrop for Monday's lyrics! As always, the vibe is righteous, and the spirit is totally uplifting – the kind of amazing music that's held us rapt, watching her career for the past two decades – never disappointed, and always blown away by the rich progression in her music. Monday plays a bit of flute on the record, Ed Motta sings guest vocals on a version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Bridges" – and other titles include "Adventures", "What Is In A Soul", "Map Of The Soul", "What Defines You", "Brasilianos", "Til Morning Comes Again", and "The Elusive Song". ✨✧ Vanishing TwinChoose Your Own Adventure ... CD
Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Malcolm Catto is at the production helm for this sweet debut set from Vanishing Twin – and you can definitely hear his touches in the music – which is often funky and trippy at the same time! The group themselves have kind of a fuzz-frequency vibe that lies somewhere between late 60s French pop psych, and maybe the revived analogue modes of the 90s – with echoey drums, swirling organ and keyboard lines, and vocals that seem nicely compressed down into the mix – but in a way that gives them more Silver Apples-like power. But there's also some moodier, spookier moments too – almost soundtrack elements from time to time, especially at the more obtuse instrumental points – which almost feel like they could have come from a Finders Keepers reissue. Titles include "Under The Water", "Eggs", "Truth Is Boring", "Choose Your Own Adventure", "Telescope", "Vanishing Twin Syndrome", and "The Conservation Of Energy". CD

Monday MichiruPortraits In Time – 2002 to 2013 ... CD
Adventure, 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 15.99
A wonderful portrait of Monday Michiru – one of our favorite singers of the past 20 years – equally well-versed in jazz, soul, and Brazilian modes – all of which come together on this collection of very well-chosen and overlooked tracks! The special 2CD package brings together music from some of Monday's smaller label and under-distributed titles – including a number of import-only selections, a few collaborations with other artists, and a really wonderful array of tunes that show just how much Michiriu has grown since she first started out! Monday hit some great fame in the mid 90s in Japan – but during recent years, she's been living in the US mostly, and really working on her craft away from the limelight – opening up with expressive jazz inflections that rival some of her best inspirations of previous decades, while still holding onto the richly soulful power that brought her some strong early attention. If you've missed hearing Monday at all, this set is a great introduction – and even if you've followed her as closely as we have, we'll bet that there's some tracks here you might not have in your collection. 23 tracks in all – including "Dreams Of Tomorrow", "Mi Vida", "Sometimes", "One (Alter Ego version)", "Generations", "Epiphany", "Aldeia De Ogum", "Nexus Interlude", "Hung Up", "Genetic Imprints", "Just Be Good To Me", "No Matter What", "Belle O Byron Bay (Bluey mix)", "No Answer", "The Cosmic Laws", and "Cut To The Chase". ✨✧ Danger Mouse & Daniele LuppiRome ... CD
Capitol, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sonic adventurer and avant pop mood-setter Danger Mouse teams up with Italian composer and soundtrack guru Daniele Luppi for the atmospheric Rome – a rewarding effort that demonstrates once again how pretty much no one is taking as many brilliant creative risks on a major label than Brian Burton in the early aught tens! Danger Mouse's stamp as a writer and producer is all over Rome, but it bears the hallmarks of Luppi even more profoundly – material crafted by Italian musicians up to and including the great Edda Dell'Orso on voice! Jack White and Norah Jones contribute, and if the pop star names made the project an easier pill to swallow for Capitol, that's all the better, because their warm voices and obviously genuine affection for the material truly serves it well. Titles include "The Rose With A Broken Neck", "Season's Trees", "Roman Blue", "Black", "The Matador Has Fallen", "The World", "Her Hollow Ways" and more. CD
