Ugly Things, 2024. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A great issue of one of the coolest, grooviest, most jam-packed music magazines you'll ever find – stuffed to the gills with all sorts of well-written and very long articles on overlooked artists from the past! There's a big cover feature on The Yardbirds – and the issue also includes equally long articles on The Paley Brothers, The Ascots, Subway Sect, and Novaks Kapelle – plus a very cool comparison of the 60s beat group scenes in Poland and Hungary – all with vintage images and photos in black and white. And we especially love the issue's great recounting of the history of west coast psych act The Moon and related Colours – always a bit of a musical mystery to us – in a huge issue that's got over 150 pages in all, and will keep you reading for weeks to come! Ugly ThingsIssue 64 – Winter 2023 ... Magazine
Ugly Things, 2023. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
A beautiful issue of Ugly Things – one of the preeminent journals covering timelessly groovy sounds! Twin pillars of the 60s English scene are on the cover – The Creation and The Artwoods – with a great look at the early years of the former, circa 1966, and an excellent, far-reaching interview with guitarist Derek Griffiths of the latter by publisher/editor Mike Stax. Also includes pieces on the CA Quintet, Fred Neil, The Belles, Stonewall, The Yardbirds in Cyril Jordan's San Francisco Beat and lots more. As usual, so much of the writing feels more like passages of a book than mere magazine features, as does the nearly 150-page all killer, no filler length of the issue! Magazine

Sea DersSea Ders ... CD
Groovie/Lion, Late 60s. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
Mighty nice work from the Sea-Ders of Lebanon – not the brand you might know from the supermarket aisles, but instead a very cool combo who played in Beirut in the 60s! The group have the garagey elements of many other groups of the time – but they also use both their guitar and electric bouzuki in ways that seem to predate the Arabesk rock of the Turkish scene – nicely exotic phrasing on the electric instruments, which make for a very cool balance with their English language vocals on the tunes! The set brings together all known recordings by the group – singles for both the Decca and Symbol label – presented with liner notes from Ugly Things magazine too. Titles include "For Your Information", "Hide If You Want To Hide". "I Like The Way", "Thanks A Lot", "Better Loved", "Undecidedly", and "Cause I Do Care" CD

✨✧ John TchicaiIn Monk's Mood (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2008. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John Tchicai plays the music of Thelonious Monk, and a few of his own tunes too – in a wonderful set that shows beautifully why we always look out for work from this enigmatic saxophonist! There's definitely a Monkish vibe to the record, but Tchicai's approach is often quite personal too – creating warmth where others might have kept things angular, or changing up the pacing of the tunes – so that he's always leaving a very strong imprint of his own on the recordings, and not just covering too-familiar Monk territory. Each tune has a slightly different execution – and many numbers have John stepping out sparely, blowing in the lead – but with some warmth and depth that's quite different than the coldness of his modern moments from years back. And there's also a bit of Hammond on the record – played by George Colligan, who also alternates on piano – and use of that instrument really makes for a fresh sound too – a wonderful change that's almost like some 60s soul jazz take on Monk. Bass is by Steve Laspina and drums are by Billy Drummond – and titles include "Monk's Mood", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Ugly Beauty", "Ruby My Dear", and "Cool Copy". ✨✧ Willie ColonAsalto Navideno Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fania/Craft, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great second session of Christmas music from Willie Colon in the 70s – served up with the same warm spirits and earthy energy as the first! As before, Hector Lavoe's on vocals, Yomo Toro plays cuatro, and the group's got a rootsy sort of feel that recalls Willie's excellent Good Band & Ugly album – that rootsy style that Willie Colon used a bit in the mid 70s, after charging things up with his youthful break from tradition at the end of the 60s! The cover has a great image of Santa and his helpers gangstering a car mechanic – and Joe Torres turns out some great piano lines, next to the percussion of Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual. Titles include "Cantemos", "Pescado", "Tranquilidad", "Arbolito", "La Banda" and "Recomendacion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TroyesRainbow Chaser – Complete Recordings 1966 to 1968 ... CD
Cicadelic, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Troyes look plenty young on the cover, but the Michigan quintet can really stand shoulder-to-shoulder with much older garage groups of their generation! The music here is another one of those "what ifs" from the mid 60s American hinterland – a group who were every bit as amazing as some of the Sunset Strip scene, or maybe even some of the trippiest Texas rockers – but who never fully got their due, despite both tremendous instrumental skills, and a really great talent for creating really memorable songs! This double-length set brings these guys into the limelight far too many years to get them on the charts – but at a level that will hopefully give them their due – as evidenced by the strong cover support by both Ugly Things and Shindig. Titles include "The Morning Of The Rain", "I Don't Need You", "The Good Night", "Mari", "I'm Gone", "Jezebel", "Help Me Find Myself", "Rainbow Chaser (unedited version)", "Your Mind Is Showing", "I'm Gone", "Blanket Of My Love", and "Corn Flake". Worth it alone for all the great fuzzy organ! CD
