✨✧ Paulo MouraMensagem – Paulo Moura Hepteto ... LP
Equipe/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A lost classic from one of the greatest Brazilian sax players ever! This obscure session originally came out on the Equipe label, and was even briefly issued in the US on the Tangerine imprint – and the record stands as one of the greatest sides of jazz that Moura ever cut! Paulo handled all the arrangements himself, and the group's an all star one that features Pascoal Meirelles on drums, Wagner Tiso on piano, Luiz Carlos on bass, plus additional tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone next to Moura's alto sax. The set's a beautiful batch of warmly painted tunes – awash with color and life, showing both Moura's talent for lyrical interplay, and his tendency to blow in edgier styles. Titles include "Travessia", "No Brilho Da Faca", "General Da Banda", "Outubro", "Nem Precisou Mais Um Sol", and "Das Tardes Mais Sos". LP, Vinyl record album

Jose MauroA Viagem Das Horas ... CD
Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A tremendous lost masterpiece from Jose Mauro – a less-remembered figure in Brazilian music at the start of the 70s – but one we'd rank right up there with the best of the time, on a short list that would include Marcos Valle, Milton Nascimento, and Arthur Verocai! Like those three giants, Mauro's got a way with a tune that's completely his own, and very different than music taking place in the Anglo scene at the time – sophisticated, but never full of itself – personal, but also always reaching for higher ideas too – set up in these sublime arrangements by Roberto Quartin, who recorded the date for his own famous label – with a killer studio group that includes Dom Salvador on organ and piano, Paulo Moura on alto, sax, and Wilson Das Neves on drums. Jose's vocals are fantastic, as is his subtle use of acoustic guitar – and arrangements on the set are by Maestro Gaya, who you might know from a wealth of brilliant work for the EMI/Odeon label in Brazil. The set includes three never-issued tracks – "Rua Dois", "Moenda", and "Variacao Sobre Um Antigo Tem" – plus "A Viagem Das Horas", "O Nino", "Morango Encanto", "O Oitava Morada", "Romanza", and "O Cavaleiro De Antonina". ✨✧ Joyce with Joao DonatoTudo Bonito ... CD
Rip Curl/Sony (Brazil), 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from the lovely Joyce – one of her best of recent years! The record features Joyce working with bossa maestro Joao Donato – who plays acoustic and electric piano, sings, and helps Joyce with some of the arrangements – and the overall style of the album is very much in the vein of some of his most beautiful work. The set was with contributions from Brazilian jazz players like Paulo Moura, Gilson Peranzzetta, and Tutty Moreno – and Joyce is in fantastic form, singing and playing acoustic guitar with all the soulful passion of her best early recordings. The production is great, too – and the album has a rawer edge than some of Joyce's other work from the 90s – nicely stripped-down, with a rasp in both her vocals and the work of the other jazz players. Titles include "Bananeira", "Anos 30", "Drume Negrita", "Tudo Bonito", "Gala Tanta", "Falta De Ar", "Adolescensia", and "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce". CD

✨✧ Cannonball Adderley with Bossa Rio SextetCannonball's Bossa Nova ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Bossa madness – and a really hard to find pressing of this album! Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Egberto GismontiFeixe De Luz ... LP
EMI (Brazil), 1988. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Egberto's working here with a lot of electric keyboards – but he's lost none of his fire and power! The range of compositions is amazing – from spare mellow beautiful numbers, to driving open-ended tracks that have a free improvisational quality to them – and backing is by the Academia De Dancas group, which features work by Luiz Alves, Paulo Moura, Zeca Assumpcao, and Robertinho Silva. Titles include "Bela Palomera", "7 Aneis", "Feixe De Luz", "For All", "Dor De Amor", "Scherzo Mecanico", and "Forrobodo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jards MacaleContrastes ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A straighter album than some of the early experimental work of Jards Macale – but maybe a greater album as well – and one that really shows the singer coming into his own, and finding a way to nestle his fresh ideas within the best settings of 70s MPB! The shift's a bit like the maturation some of his contemporaries were going through at the time – like Caetano Veloso or Gal Costa – reaching for a new level of sophistication in his arrangements, which might tie him back to older historical modes – yet still with a delivery that marks his willingness to reach for new styles. Elements of jazz, samba, and even some more offbeat qualities show up on the record – and the arrangements are handled by Wagner Tiso, Gilberto Gil, and Paulo Moura. Titles include the weird electronic/vocal number "Passarhino Do Relogio", which has a mad abstract Tropicalia-era sound – plus the tracks "No Meio Do Mato", "Negra Melodia", "Sim Ou Nao", "Sem Essa", and "Black & Blue". ✨✧ Milton NascimentoMilagre Dos Peixes ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Milton Nascimento's darker LPs, with a great set of tracks that have a deep rock feel to them, yet which maintain all of the soulful spirit that was in Nascimento's earlier recordings. Nascimento's working here with a great set of musicians that include some of Brazil's most farthest-reaching jazz players of the 70s – Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, Paulo Moura, Wagner Tiso, and Nana Vasconcelos – all of whom come together beautifully in baroque arrangements with a complicated, yet honest feel. Originally released as an album, plus a single, this remastered CD includes all the original tracks – with titles that include "Milagre Dos Peixes", "Pablo", "A Chamda", "Os Escravos De Jo", and "Sacramento".
