✨✧ Michel LegrandHappy Ending ... LP
United Artists, 1969. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A slice of genius from Michel Legrand – one of his brilliant late 60s soundtracks, not as well remembered as, but cut during the same period as The Thomas Crown Affair. The soundtrack is probably best remembered for the incredible theme "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" – sung here in 2 versions by Michael Dees, and also served up in a nice instrumental take as well. But overall, the whole record is pretty darn great – not as out and out groovy as some of Legrand's other work, but with a great mix of moody, jazzy, and atmospheric – handled with some really great instrumental touches that are all Legrand, all the way! Titles include "Smooth Sailing", "Collage", "Diamonds Are Forever", "Floating Time", "Hurry Up N Hurry Down", and "Whistle While You Swing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink & orange label stereo pressing. Cover has an Audition Copy stamp in back.)

✨✧ Michel LeGrandLeGrand Jazz (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD
Philips/Jazz Heritage, 1959. Used ... $3.99
A classic album – one that pairs the arranging talents of the great French composer Michel Legrand, with a host of American jazz players – including Miles Davis, Ben Webster, Milt Hinton, Donald Byrd, Hank Jones, and John Coltrane. The tracks are a beautiful blend of Legrand's best arranging styles from his soundtrack work, and they show his keen talent for setting up complicated orchestrations, then letting the soloist step forth into the spotlight with individual brilliance. The titles are mostly jazz standards, but they're done in a great way, with lots of twists and turns that keep things fresh. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Night In Tunisia", "Nuages", "In A Mist", and "Django". CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99 About March 27, 2024 (delayed)
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris". CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1964. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99 About March 27, 2024 (delayed)
One of the most wonderful soundtracks ever! Michel Legrand wrote the jazzy groovy score for this legendary French film from the mid 60s – and every word of dialogue in the film is sung throughout, making for a very cool, ever-changing array of vocal bits and jazzy styles. Embedded in here are lines that later became worldwide hits – like "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens" – but in this version, the songs are just themes in the huge pastiche of dialogue and narrative, and they lurk behind the score in a beautiful way. CD features 17 tracks in all – with titles that include "Scene Du Garage", "Dans Le Magasin", "Diner", "Le Mariage", "Le Retour De Guy Chez Elise", "Guy Au Cafe", "Chez Dubourg Le Joallie", and "Sur Le Quai". Universal (France), 2022. New Copy ... $4.99 24.99
Michel Legrand is one of our favorite composers of all time – and although the man himself passed away in 2019, his music continues to live on strongly in the hearts of countless singers and musicians he's touched over the years – including those who work together on this wonderful tribute album! The set's very different than other Legrand-related projects of this nature – as both the choice of cuts and the execution is very special – not too pop-polished, or overly sentimental – as most of the numbers here are very spare and open – almost recorded as these elegies to Michel, with beautiful reworkings of his familiar themes, often just with piano and some other light instrumentation – never sleepy, given the talents on board, but sensitively done in just the right spirit of Legrand's genius. Titles include "Windmills Of Your Mind" by Chad Lawson, "Sans Toi" by Luca D'Alberto, "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg" by Lambert, "Toujoirs Jamais" by Akira Kosemura, "Peau D'Ane" by Alban Claudin, "Chanson De Jumelles" by Joseph Schiano Di Lombo, "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" by Moux, and "Summer Of 42" by Chilly Gonzales. ✨✧ Michel LegrandMichel Legrand Big Band Plays Richard Rodgers/Broadway Is My Beat ... CD
Philips/Vocalion (UK), 1962/1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 jazzy gems from Michel Legrand – back to back on a single CD! Michel Legrand Big Band Plays Richard Rodgers is a pretty wonderful album by Legrand – way better than you'd guess from the title! Sure, the tunes are mostly numbers by Richard Rodgers, but Legrand handles them here with the best of his soundtrack skills – really opening them up with some amazingly deft arrangements, and working with a stellar set of American jazz players to give the tunes a sound that's as jazzy as possible – and swinging them with the inherent lyricism that always makes us love his music! Players are a great lineup – with Clark Terry and Ernie Royal on trumpets, Urbie Green and Bob Brookmeyer on trombones, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jerry Dodgion and Phil Woods on alto, Julious Watkins on French horn, Gary Burton on vibes, and Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones on piano. Titles include "This Can't Be Love", "Falling In Love With Love", "Bali Hai", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "There's A Small Hotel", and "The Lady Is A Tramp". On the second album, Broadway is the beat, but the sound has plenty of Parisian touches, too – thanks to arrangements from the mighty Michel Legrand! Legrand's in a mode here that's somewhere between his earliest soundtracks, and the European-themed records he cut for Columbia in the late 50s – styles that are a bit more warm and sentimental than in later years, with evocative elements designed to coax the Broadway-based listener out on a voyage across the Atlantic! Strings are relatively full, and sometimes used with great dynamic energy – and titles include "Bewitched", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Old Devil Moon", "With A Little Bit Of Luck", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Yesterdays". A beautiful later album from Miles Davis – and a tremendous collaboration with composer Michel Legrand, in a set that returns Miles to the French soundtrack tradition he first started back in the late 50s! Some of the tracks here are quite spare – the kind of moody, ethereal solo moments that Miles still does better than most folks at this point in time – and other numbers feature fuller musical backings that echo some of the older Legrand soundtrack flair, but which come off with a slightly more contemporary approach too. Chuck Findley also handles some of the trumpet solos on the album – so all the musings here are not Miles' alone – and titles include "The Departure", "The Arrival", "The Dream", "Paris Walking I", "Going Home", "The Jam Session", and "Club Entrance". BMG, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A haunting set from French soundtrack maestro Michel Legrand – an obscure album of orchestral tunes from the mid 70s, handled with a lot more strings than you'd usually hear in his work, but in a way that comes off sounding delightful! Legrand has a talent for making any kind of setting swing, and he certainly shows that in this set – a moodily concocted batch of tracks that fit perfectly with his best soundtrack work of the time. There's a slight bit of electricity in some of the tracks, and the album features solo work by Phil Woods on alto, Derek Watkins on trumpet, and Don Lusher on trombone. Titles include "Pieces Of Dreams", "Sweet Gingerbread Man", "Christine", "Wonder Where I'll Be Tomorrow", "The Saddest Thing Of All", and "Happy". LP, Vinyl record album

Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 10CD ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a package from one of our favorite film composers ever – a huge 10CD assortment of music from the earliest years of Michel Legrand – a set that shows just what an amazing career he was already having in Paris before his mid 60s rise on the international scene! The scope of work here is wonderful – and as you can guess from the title, the set includes only instrumental music from Legrand (although we will admit, there's a few vocals here and there) – which comprises not only early film scores and soundtrack contributions, but also some jazz projects and other instrumental recordings too – some more orchestral, others more in a groovy style that's like an instrumental take on early French pop! We're huge fans of Michel's music, and have lots of it in our collection already – but there's still a lot here that we'd not heard before – a whopping 234 tracks in all, with a completeness from these years that's echoed in the detailed notes, which are in both French and English. There's a huge amount of tracks we've never seen on CD, including lots of material from obscure French 7" EP releases – and the inside package offers the full details on the origin of all the many varied titles. Columbia, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sparkling postwar musical fantasy of Paris – one made up of a host of famous themes from French pop music of the 20th century, all set to lush string arrangements by a young Michel Legrand! The album's not as upbeat or jazzy as some of Legrand's later soundtrack work, but it's got a wonderful quality all its own – a warmly romantic vision of a Paris that was still putting the pieces back together less than a decade after WWII, presented in a way that glosses sweet sounds over darker corners with a vaguely eerie feel. The record instantly made Legrand an international favorite, and features "The Last Time I Saw Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Autumn Leaves", "A Paris", "La Vie En Rose", "Under Paris Skies", and "April In Paris. Classic vocal material by Michel Legrand, an artist who's better known to the world for his groovy writing and arranging for soundtracks and instrumental pop albums. Legrand's singing is quite nice, though – and he's got a sweetly raspy voice that has an honest quality that's extremely capitivating, and which doesn't have the over-emotional approach of other French singers from the time. The record also features instrumentation by Legrand's orchestra, which means that the tracks have a nice jazzy sound to them. Film Score Monthly, 1972/1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two sweeet little soundtracks – both by French composers, but for films that played here in the US, too! George Delerue really shines on Rich & Famous – coming up with a score that's richer, more sensitive than the narrative itself – filled with gently cascading strings and woodwinds that open up wonderfully – often like these little flowers of sound as the tunes progress, even on some of the more classically-informed numbers. Titles inlcude "Something Strange About You", "Eighteen", "Reading The Script", and "You Owe Me One". Michel Legrand's score for One Is A Lonely Number is a great accompaniment to the Delerue soundtrack – penned almost a decade earlier, and handled with the warm sense of feeling we always love in Legrand's music! Most tunes are relatively mellow, and swell up with a beautiful balance of strings and woodwinds – especially flute – and the set does feature one vocal number by Legrand, "Le Soleil La Mer Et Les Bateaux", plus the instrumental tracks "The Photo", "Fender Rhodes", "Moving On", "Alone In The City", "The Dress", and "Sad Memories". Dreamy sounds from the legendary Michel Legrand – working here in a mode that's maybe a bit more lush and romantic than some of his later soundtrack work – yet at a level that's still head and shoulders above most of his 50s instrumental contemporaries! The set's got a melancholy vibe throughout – that sense of leaving that not only evokes a visitor having to head home after a trip in Paris, but also all the sadness and loss that the city experienced during the wartime years as well – even later, as American Gis had to head home – and were an obvious market for a record like this in the US! Tracks include "Bonjour Paris", "French Can Can", "Le Mer", "Two Loves Have I", and "A Paris Dans Chaque Faubourg". A great little soundtrack from Michel Legrand – an early American effort, done for a less-remembered Dean Martin film! The title track features vocals from the Ray Conniff singers, who sweeten up Legrand's sound a bit more than usual – but other tracks are instrumentals, and have a sprightly orchestral sound that's really great – possibly a bit less "French" than other Legrand scores, but still pretty wonderful. The theme that runs through all tunes is great, and handled on a variety of woodwinds and piano throughout. A very cool soundtrack to this excellent Steve McQueen film! The soundtrack's quite different than most of Legrand's work from the time – in that it's kind of a collage of music, sounds from the film, racing bits, and other material – all fused into a beautiful blend that's still quite musical, and which acts almost as an aural representation of the film itself. Legrand gets out some great melodies that rank with his other work of the time – but they sound different, with racing cars blasting through them! Music Box (France), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two very rare soundtracks from French genius Michel Legrand – back to back on a single CD! The work here was done right after Legrand's classic run with director Jacques Demy – and the music on Les Feux De A La Chandeleur demonstrates the deepening in Legrand's sound that took place during those years – his shift from shorter, jazzier numbers to masterful command of a larger orchestra graced with a wonderfully sensitive touch at times. But make no mistake, there's also some groovier numbers on the score for Les Feux – and a few nice jazzy bits too – which pepper the soundtrack in ways that only further elaborate the richness of Legrand at his best. Titles include "Lettre A Laura", "Black Fire Dream", "Balade Des Filles", "Le Bebe D'Annie", and "Le Chapeau Rouge". Next up is the score for La Ville Fille – done as a number of very short sound cues, most under a minute long – but all packed with that strong sense of melody that always makes Legrand's music so great – a bit more playful than the first score on the CD, but still sophisticated and deep at all the best moments. The album was recorded live – with a mixed group of electric and acoustic players that includes Joe Beck, Randy Brecker, Ron Carter, Phil Woods, and Ron Carter – and the overall approach is spaciously baroque, setting up the tunes with the same clever care as Legrand's best scores, giving the soloists plenty of room to step out and paint strong colors and tones in sound. One of the first moments of grooviness from Michel Legrand in the 60s – a set that takes his older orchestral style and fits it to a really mod set of rhythms! The album's filled with jaunty grooves – leaping sort of numbers that almost have a "yeh yeh" French pop approach, but which are instrumental throughout – topped with these swirling strings that step along at a clip to match the rhythms, and backed with lots of groovy organ from Legrand, and guitar from the legendary Elek Bacsik! There's even some wordless vocals scatting through the mix – and the sound's unlike anything else that Legrand ever did – a great precursor to his famous soundtracks, but a real standout record as well. Titles include the famous "Di Gue Ding Ding" – a cut you'll recognize right away – plus "Motor City", "Bandol", "Alcatraz", "Da We Da", "Monkey Business", "Manhattan Stroll", "Hi Girls", "Come Ray & Come Charles", and "Noix De Coco". Orchestrations are rich, and filled with sentiment – and the album's got an especially strong standout theme – performed in a number of variations, and with haunting "Summer of 42"-styled piano tinkling over the larger string arrangements, in a very Legrand-like way! The 40s setting helps the soundtrack avoid any disco cliches – which were common at the time – and allows for a continued strong focus on Legrand's skills at the helm of the orchestra. Although Legrand's always been known for his sweet soundtrack work and his famous easy listening sides – he's also a heck of a jazz pianist, and here in this rare 1959 session, he works in a trio format that puts him right up there with the best of the French piano-technics of his generation, like Maurice Vander or Rene Utreger. The arrangements are wonderfully off-beat – and Legrand dances around the piano with a versatility that we didn't know he had. The group features Guy Pedersen on bass and Gus Wallez on drums – and titles include "Paris In The Spring", "Sous Les Ponts De Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Moulin Rouge", and "La Vie En Rose". CD

✨✧ Michel Legrand & CoLe Jazz Grand ... LP
Gryphon, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful session of straight jazz work by Michel Legrand – a larger group outing that's one of the few albums he ever cut in this style! The set has all the warmth and imagination of Legrand's best jazzy soundtrack work – strong themes, bold statements, and a sense of personal investment that comes through even in a larger ensemble – yet the work here is also delivered with even more freedom for solo work than Legrand's film scores, with plenty of longer exploratory passages that showcase the takents of key soloists like Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, and Jon Faddis. Most of the album's first side features an extended track suite entitled "Southern Routes" played by a big band – and side two features shorter titles played by a septet, with titles that include "La Pasionaria", "Malagan Stew", "Iberia Nova", and "Basquette". RCA, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful record – one in which Phil Woods blows alto solos over the arrangements of Michel Legrand – handled in the masterful style of Legrand's best jazzy soundtrack work, and in a way that lets Woods hit some of his best solos of the 70s! Legrand's always been great at this sort of album for any jazzman – and here, he unlocks a romantic tone in Woods' style that is a nice counterpart to some of the hippy-dippiness that he'd been showing in other sides from the 70s. The real highlight is the 14 minute title track – "Images" – a cool extended jazzy romp which has Woods' alto running through hard tight changes alongside Legrand's dynamic orchestra – but there's plenty of other nice numbers, including "The Summer Knows", "Windmills Of Your Mind", and "I Was Born In Love With You". The legendary Michel Legrand gave the world music in so many different styles and formats – jazz, soundtrack material, and even a huge legacy of vocal material too – the last of which is showcased in this great collection – which features a fair bit of more recent recordings, which stand in nice contrast to Legrand's decades of albums and singles – as proof that his musical legacy has gone on to touch generations! A number of these feature Legrand himself on arrangements, and all the tracks are his own compositions – titles that include "La Chanson De Delphone" by Clara Luciani, "Chanson Des Jumelles" by Yuri Buenaventura, "Les Moulins De Mon Coeur" by Juliette Armanet, "La Joueuese" by Philippe Katerine, "Sa Maison" by Natalie Dessay, "Ton Copain Des Jours De Pluie" by Benjamin Legrand, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Ete" by Les Umbrellas, and "Sans Toi" by Youn Sun Nah. Universal (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A few other tunes are a bit mellow, but in a great way that really fits the watery title of the set – cool and shimmering, and with a great sense of sound that really shows Legrand's talents. Titles include "La Piscine", "Blues Pour Romy", "Suspicion", "Dans La Soiree", and "De Souvenirs En Regrets" – plus "Run Brother Rabbit Run" sung by Delaney Bramlett and "Ask Yourself Why" sung by Sally Stevens. The album has Legrand on piano and a bit of vocals – leading a large ensemble that features trumpets, trombones, saxes, and a bit of electric bass in the rhythm section. The overall effect is quite full-on – strongly voice interpretations of work by Legrand that normally receives more tender readings – and although there's a bit of a modern touch to the way the album was recorded, the record is a nice bridge between Legrand's classic LeGrand Jazz album of years back, and his more recent work. A great little look at Michel Legrand's years with RCA Records – a time when the famous French soundtrack composer was returning to some of his roots in jazz, and also providing backdrops for some singers as well! The scope of work here is really great – from hard-swinging big band material to smaller combo jazz, to vocal numbers that really show the warmth and feeling of Legrand's lyrics as well as his music. Most of the work here has been out of print for years, even on CD, and the package does a great job of mixing up the modes with a sense of fullness that goes even beyond the regular albums. Titles include "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and "Sweet Gingerbread Man" with Jack Jones, "I Will Wait For You" and "One At A Time" with Lena Horne, and "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Snowbird Serenade", "The Summer Knows", "Watch What Happens", "The Saddest Thing Of All", and "Splittons" as jazz numbers by Legrand. Melissa Errico's maybe not the best-known jazz singer on the scene, but she's very well-remembered for this fantastic set of tunes penned by Michel Legrand – all set to very sublime orchestrations by Legrand himself! The feel here is lush – both in the fullness of Errico's vocals, and in the way Michel sets the tunes up – in a mode that's very different than some of the more laidback interpretations of his work – and at a level that reminds us that, more than most, Legrand has a fantastic sense of instrumental color when given the right tools. Melissa more than matches that energy, with very personal interpretations of Legrand tunes both famous and lesser-known – a set list that includes "Dis Moi", "In Another Life", "I Will Wait For You", "His Eyes Her Eyes", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Celui La", "Once Upon A Summertime", "Maybe Someone Dreamed Us", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". Expanded version features a full bonus CD of material – unissued tracks "Little Boy Lost", "The Way He Makes Me Feel", "Hurry Home", and "I Haven't Thought Of This In Quite A While" – plus studio demos with Legrand of six more tunes, and even a section of the pair of them at work! Philips, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite singers and one of our favorite composers – brought together in a dream of a vocal jazz album! We've always loved the tunes that Michel Legrand penned for films of the 60s and 70s – as they've got a depth, sincerity, and jazziness that goes beyond most of his contemporaries – but they've also never sounded better than in the hands of vocalist Karin Krog and arranger Palle Mikkelborg, who both really deliver a unique twist on the Legrand sound! Mikkelborg's arrangements for the set are extremely beautiful – sometimes using funky backings, sometimes softer strings – but always getting the right balance between emotion and grooviness that Legrand brought to his original recordings of the work. And guitarist Philip Catherine plays some nicely complicated lines that electrify the tunes with a weird, moody feel – often "singing" alongside Karin's deeply icy vocals in a really wonderful way. The tracks are all taken at slightly longer readings than you might expect, which makes for even more room for creative invention – and titles include "Watch What Happens", "Ask Yourself Why", "I Will Wait For You", "Once Upon A Summertime", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". A weird and wonderful lost soundtrack from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – done for a movie that was essentially a children's story, but with a great array of unusual sounds and very cool 80s keyboards! Sarah Vaughn hit a very groovy new style on her handful of records for the Mainstream label in the early 70s – a new approach that offered her amazing voice a way to stretch out with some of the new sophistication of the time! The arrangements are still jazz, but they've taken a direction that other younger singers, like Nancy Wilson, were following as the decade began – maybe more adult themes in the lyrics, and a way of balancing out the larger charts without ever getting in the way of the singer – which is especially important here, in the way that the album demonstrates that phrasing that not only made Sarah so unique at the start, but which got even more amazing as the years moved on. The arrangers are a hip lot who are definitely up to the job – and include Michel Legrand, Peter Matz, and Jack Elliott – on titles that include "Run To Me", "And The Feeling's Good", "Just A Little Lovin", "Deep In The Night", "When You Think Of It", and a nice take on "Easy Evil". That's Miles Davis and Jeanne Moreau on the cover – and image is a perfect summation of what makes this period in film music so unique! The set brings together music from the French new wave of the late 50s and early 60s – a time when revolutionary directors were putting fresh new images on screen, and also turning to lots of new ideas for their music, too – using jazz musicians like Miles to create some of their soundtracks, and also moving past some of the more overblown orchestral styles that had dominated most of the world of film scores during the postwar years. Much of the work used by these directors was in a style that was closer to the people, and more fitting for the sorts of themes in the films – and this 3CD collection features a wonderful array of different modes from the period. Many films are included here with a few selections from their famous soundtracks – and the 3CD package includes work from Tires Sur Le Pianiste (Shoot The Piano Player) by Georges Delerue, A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) by Marial Solal, L'Eau A La Bouche by Serge Gainsbourg, A Double Tour by Paul Misraki, Les Liaisons Dangereuxes by Art Blakey with Barney Wilen, La Tete Contre Les Murs by Maurice Jarre, Le Bel Age by Georges Delerue, Les Bonnes Femmes by Paul Misraki, Jules Et Jim by Georges Delerue, Lola by Michel Legrand, Les 400 Coups (400 Blows) by Jean Constantin, Une Femme Est Une Femme by Michel Legrand, Zazi Dans Le Metro by Fiorenzo Carpi, Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud by Miles Davis, and Cleo De 5 A 7 by Michel Legrand. MPS (Japan), 1968/1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bold brilliant statement from pianist Steve Kuhn – his next great record after the seminal Three Waves, and a record that pushes the envelope even further! From the title, you might think that Kuhn's playing some familiar 60s standards for MPS – but he's really working strongly in his own agenda here, stepping forward in strong new voice he was bringing to piano at the time, and even going a bit more outside than ever before. The trio includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Jon Christensen on drums – and although familiar, some of the titles have a sense of freedom that really transforms them. Titles include Burt Bacharach's great "Windows On The World", Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens", Gary McFarland's "Once We Loved", Carla Bley's "Ad Infinitum", and Kuhn's own "Silver". CD

✨✧ Abbey Lincoln with Archie SheppGolden Lady ... LP
Inner City, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully moody album from Abbey Lincoln – one that's a bit more laidback than some of her other efforts, but no less soulful! There's kind of a broken, jagged sound to the record – a late nite vibe that's blue and melancholy, and which gets some great support from the tenor sax of Archie Shepp – which often gets a chance to solo on most tracks! The rhythms are gentle, often a bit spare – and handled by Hilton Ruiz on piano, Jack Gregg on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – and the set also features work from trumpeter Roy Burroughs. Tracks include three original compositions, "Painted Lady", "Throw It Away", and "Caged Bird", plus a sublime version of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady". Also includes Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady", and Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Henry ManciniBig Screen Little Screen/A Concert Of Film Music ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pair of lesser-known 70s albums from maestro Henry Mancini – back to back on a single CD! On Big Screen Little Screen, Henry Mancini balances things out between the big screen of the cinema and the little screen of the TV – both showcases for his famous work over the years! Many of the numbers here aren't Mancini originals, but hits of the day, redone by Hank in a variety of modes – some a bit funky, others somewhat mellow and lush – making for a bit more of a range than usual for a Mancini record of this vintage. Solos include nice work on organ by both Larry Knechtel and Clare Fischer, plus trumpet by Jack Sheldon and tenor from Jerome Richardson – and titles include "Theme From Nicholas & Alexandra", "All His Children", "The Summer Knows", "Life Is What You Make It", "Theme From Shaft", "them From Cade's County", "Johnny's Theme", "Those Were The Days", "Mystery Movie Theme", and "The Ironside Theme". On A Concert Of Film Music, Mancini hits these more lush, more sophisticated charts with a larger orchestra – delivering really respectful variations on famous themes that come in a few different "suites". The album features a section of Nino Rota compositions, another French Collection with music by Michel Legrand and Francis Lai, and a Disaster Movie Suite, with tracks from Earthquake and The Towering Inferno! Titles include "A Man & A Woman", "Love Theme From Amarcord", "Drink More Milk", "Love Story", "Summer Of 42", "The Lovers", "Actic Whale Hunt", and "Jaws". CD

✨✧ Oscar PetersonBlues Etude ... CD
Limelight/Polygram, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked 60s gem from Oscar Peterson – one of his great sides for Limelight Records, and possibly the most soulful of the bunch! The group's a trio – with either Sam Jones or Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and they've got a really great feel, one that's a bit different than some of Oscar's earlier groups of the 60s. Hayes' work on drums is nicely sensitive, and almost takes backseat to Peterson's rhythmic piano lines at times – and Jones' work on bass is always a treat, and kicks some of the best tracks here into a really great groove! The record's got a few great original titles, too – like the midtempo groover "Bossa Beguine", and the groovy "L'Impossible", a cool little instrumental that sounds like it was from a soundtrack by Francis Lai or Michel Legrand, and the title track "Blues Etude". Other titles include "Let's Fall In Love", "Shelley's World", "I Know You Oh So Well", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Elis ReginaElis Como e Porque ... CD
Philips (Brazil), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from the incredible Elis Regina – a record that really has her hitting new levels in her style – moving past simple bossa into a realm of music that's all her own! The backings are arranged by Roberto Menescal, who also moves into some great new territory here – a soaring, spacious mode that's way different than his gentler bossa – and which really has some of the growing complications that were showing up in Brazilian music at the end of the 60s. There's a fair bit of jazz in the mix, but also a fair bit of majesty too – and the tunes soar out with a much livelier feel than some of Regina's later albums. Titles include amazing renditions of "Canto De Osssanha", "O Barquinho", "Giro", "O Sonho", "Casa Forte", and "Vera Cruz" – plus a tasty version of Michel Legrand's "Recit De Cassard", from Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. ✨✧ Sarah VaughanSend In The Clowns ... LP
Mainstream, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit goofy, but the album's a standout in the 70s career of Sarah Vaughan – one of those sets in which she tried out newer, more contemporary material – and found that both her voice and the new style of arranging were a surprisingly good fit! Vaughan has help here from talents who were working both in soul and jazz at the time – as the album features charts by Paul Griffin, Wade Marcus, Gene Page, Michel Legrand, and Ernie Wilkins – and has a gentle, laidback vibe that glows with a few electric currents – almost in Kudu Records modes, but a bit more expansive overall, and with less of an easy nod to funk. Titles include "Wave", "Do Away With April", "Love Don't Live Here Anymore", "On Thinking It Over", "Right In The Next Room", and "I Need You More". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Phil WoodsFloresta Canto ... LP
RCA, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of those great records from the 70s that makes you say "man, Phil Woods was hip!" The session was cut in London with an electrified big band led by Chris Gunning, and featuring keyboards by the groovy Gordon Beck – kind of a blend of strings, keys, and woodwinds – providing some lush backdrops that allow Phil to really open up on some great solos. The style is similar to Phil's album Images, done with Michel Legrand – but with some more electric touches – and like that album, it's got a wonderfully fluid, lyrical approach that's quite different from the harder-jamming fusion albums Woods cut in Europe. Titles include "Canto De Ossanha", "Sails", "Roses", "Without You", "Jesse", and "O Morro". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousViva Varda ... LP
Universal (France), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic musical tribute to the filmmaking genius of the late Agnes Varda – a set that brings together work from her earliest films of the 60s, all the way through some of her important contributions to cinema in the 21st Century! The scope of styles here is great – sometimes jazzy, sometimes more serious – sometimes vocal, and sometimes instrumental – yet that also reflects the range of styles that Varda brought to her films as well. The set features music by Michel Legrand for Cleo De 5 a 7, Francois Wertheimer & Orchidee for L'Une Chante L'Autre Pas, Matthieu Chedid for Visages Villages, Joanna Bruzdowicz for Jacquot De Nantes and Sans Toi Ni Loi, Laurent Levesque for Les Plages D'Agnes and Agnes De Ci De La Varda, Christian Legrand for HLM Et Cine-Roman, Michel Colombier for Pour Agnes, and Jean Michel Defaye for Le Bonheur. ✨✧ Roy BuddRoy Budd Playathon At Pizza On The Park ... CD
Caldera (Germany), 1989. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A late live moment of brilliance from Roy Budd – the British pianist who first cut some great jazz records in the 60s, then went on to create some sublime soundtracks in the 70s – working here in a trio setting that brings together the best of both worlds, and adds in some surprising bossa nova touches too! All tracks are nice and long, performed with piano from Budd, drums from Chris Karan, and bass from Pete Morgan – the latter of whom also sings a bit – in a set that's also got a very unusual approach, in that it's part of a 24 hour "playathon" to raise awareness on issues of drug abuse – a performance that also features some surprising guest appearances from Jeremy Irons and Henry Mancini. But obviously, the best bits are the instrumental ones – as Budd makes it through an 18 minute "Michel Legrand Suite", a 10 minute blend of "Anoiteceu/Berimbau", a 14 minute take on "Upa Neguinho/Aguas De Marco/Opao/Corcovado", and some other nice surprises too. ✨✧ Miles DavisFacets No 1 ... LP
CBS, 1956/1958/1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Import collection of some more obscure Miles moments from the late 50s Columbia years! There's 4 tracks recorded with the orchestra of Michel Legrand – and players that include Coltrane, Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Bill Evans: "Jitterbug Waltz", "Round Midnight", "Wild Man Blues", and "Django". 2 tracks from a recording by the Brass Ensemble Of The Jazz & Classical Music Society, one led by John Lewis, the other by Gunther Schuller, are surprisingly wonderful – very much in the mode of Miles' work with Gil Evans, with a similar glistening sound on Miles' trumpet, and warm chromatic washes of sound underneath to provide the perfect soloing vehicle. And there are 4 numbers, a pair each from the Coltrane/Garland incarnation of the quintet, "Sweet Sue" & "Budo", and a transitional sextet from 1962, "Devil May Care" & "Blue Xmas". ✨✧ Andre HodeirJazz Et Jazz ... LP
Philips, 1958. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Brilliant work from the modernist underground late 50s Paris! Andre Hodeir was one of the city's best-known jazz composers and arrangers at the time – a key part of the postwar scene, and its development into its own style away from strictly American sounds. Hodier's working here with a great batch of French players that include Martial Solal, Roger Guerin, Pierre Gossez, and Pierre Michelot – plus the then-French resident Kenny Clarke. The music swings much more than on other sessions of this type, and works extremely well throughout at blending tight jazzy lines with very "out there" concepts – especially in a way that we never really see in 50's recordings like this. Christine Legrand is on vocals, and although this was years before the Swingle Singers did their thing, and especially before they went onto do avant garde material by Berio, she's got these insane vocals here that are simply astounding. Tracks include "Jazz Et Jazz", "Trope A Saint-Trop", "Jazz Cantata", and "Osymetrios". Very good stuff, and unlike anything else we can think of! LP, Vinyl record album
