✨✧ Dick HymanSensuous Piano Of D ... LP
Project 3, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A sparkling set of piano instrumentals from Dick Hyman – not electric or moogy at all, despite the date – and often recorded with some weird overdubbing that's almost in a Ferrante & Teicher style! Hyman's keyboard work here is often highly virtuostic – hardly the laidback styles you'd expect from the "sensuous" title – but music that still might sound pretty great on a hi-fi system when seducing a stewardess! Titles include "Love Story", "El Condor Pasa", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Fire & Rain", "Koto Prelude", "Big Yellow Taxi", and "Far Away Friend". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruth BrownSoftly (aka Ruth Brown 65) ... LP
Mainstream, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A very unusual setting for the legendary Ruth Brown – the singer who first rose to fame singing raw-edged R&B tracks for Atlantic Records in the 50s – but who works here in a much jazzier mode overall! The set features backings from Peter Matz – who often accompanied the classier singers of the time – and Ruth really does a great job of mixing her bold vocals with his jazzy charts – soaring to new heights in a way that swings nicely, and makes for much deeper soul than most of Matz's other projects. Musicians include Hank Jones on piano, Clark Terry on trumpet, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Urbie Green on trombone, and Richard Davis on bass – and there also seem to be some female backup singers in a few spots too. Titles include two from Nellie Lutcher "Hurry On Down" and "He's A Real Gone Guy" and Dick Hyman's "Watch It", "Whispering Grass", "I Know Why", "Here's That Rainy Day", and a very interesting interpretation of "On The Good Ship Lollipop" – which almost makes the whole tune sound like a sad ballad. CandidoCandido In Indigo ... LP
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
Candido cut sooo many great Latin records over the years, spanning a wide range of styles, we have a hard time deciding which we love the best. We like to think this may be his best album from the early part of his career, specifically because it features the master conga player amidst a tight jazz lineup, who leave him plenty of room to solo and just plain get down doing his thing. Dick Hyman's on organ, Joe Puma's on guitar, and Ernie Royal's on trumpet, with George Duvivier and Charlie Persip in the rhythm section. 8 tracks in all, including "Afro Blue", "Caravan", "Softly But Blue", "Blue Lou", "Blue Prelude", "Bongo Baby", "Blue Dirge" and "Candido Cocktail". ✨✧ Marian MontgomeryMarian Montgomery Swings For Winners & Losers ... LP
Capitol, 1963. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We love Marian Montgomery – and she's a heck of a great singer with a really unusual sound! In an early 60s work of sultry vixens, Marian's got a harder-swinging groove that's almost in a Ray Charles mode – clearly inspired by 50s R&B, but done with enough of a jazz flourish to expand out the sound nicely. Plus, she's got a really rhythmic approach to her work, no matter what the tune – which makes for an uncanny ability to turn even a sleeper into a surprising swinger. Here, it also helps that Dick Hyman's handling the arrangements – playing organ and piano himself on the record, and working with a small combo that includes Kenny Burrell, Joe Newman, Milt Hinton, and Willie Rodriguez. The whole thing's plenty great – and titles include "Breezin Along With The Breeze", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "My Buddy", "The Exciting Mister Fitch", "Deed I Do", and "All By Myself". (Stereo pressing. Cover has light aging.)

Tracks include "Latin Fever" by Jack Costanzo, "Caravan" by Dick Hyman, "Balinese Bongos", "The Young Savages" by Martin Denny, "Moderna Muchacha" by Joe Loco, "Club Caballeros" by Laurindo Almeida, "Bernies Tune" by Al Caiola, "Dr No's Fantasy" by Elliott Fisher, "Taboo" by Leo Arnaud, and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" by Terry Snyder. ✨✧ Roy EldridgeLittle Jazz (Jazz Legacy) ... LP
Inner City, 1950. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing little about the talents of Roy Eldridge on the trumpet – as you'll hear in this hip set of tracks from the start of the 50s – material recorded in Paris with help from some great American sidemen! Half the tracks feature Roy's trumpet in a quintet with Zoot Sims on tenor, Dick Hyman on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums – grooving in the relaxed, swing-based style that you'd expect from Eldridge's 50s work on Verve. Roy sings just a bit on the set – scatting alongside the lead vocals from Anita Love on a version of "It Don't Mean A Thing" – and singing a duet with Anita on the R&B-ish "Ain't No Flies On Me". Other tracks include "King David", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", and "The Man I Love". Remaining tracks are also from Paris in June of 1950 – and feature Gerry Wiggins on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on instrumental tunes that include "Wild Driver", "Easter Parade", "If I Had You", "Nuts", and "Goliath Bounce". ✨✧ Paul GonsalvesCleopatra Feelin' Jazzy ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really great record – and one that's hardly what you'd guess from the title! Sure, the Cleopatra movie was a giant hit in the 60s – but it also gave the chance for some jazzmen to explore more exotic territory – as was also the case with material from Spartacus and Lawrence Of Arabia! Tenorist Paul Gonsalves plays a nice batch of soul jazz takes on Cleopatra – and he brings his gutsy solo style into play with a set of groovy arrangements of "Egyptian" tunes, both from the score of the film and from the pen of players on the session. And speaking of players, Dick Hyman's on organ, and he gives the album a nice nice groovy sound that works very well with Gonsalves' sharp-edged tenor. Titles include "Caesar & Cleopatra Theme", "Bluz For Liz", "Cleo's Asp", "Cleopatra's Lament", and "Action In Alexandria". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole, but is very nice!)

Some very groovy 60s instrumentals – played by Enoch Light's group with organ, sax, and a tight guitar-driven groove that's almost like the best work by Phil Bodner's Brass Ring. There's a campy groovy sound to most numbers – and titles include "The Jerk", "I Feel Fine", "Goldfinger", "Downtown", "Too Many Fish In The Sea", and "Girl From Ipanema". Cool organ by Dick Hyman! ✨✧ Toots ThielemansWhistler & His Guitar ... LP
ABC, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums by Toots that we've ever heard – a groovy set of tunes recorded in the 60s, with Dick Hyman on organ! Hyman's lean and fluid tone is a real wonder – working better here than even on his own albums, and coming into play magically with Toots – who whistles at the same time he's playing the guitar, making for an incredibly cool whistle/organ/guitar groove that's totally outta site! Tracks include "The Valley Whistler", "Wives & Lovers", "Indian Nuts", "Falling In Love With Love", "Marionette", and a version of "Bluesette" recorded earlier in Sweden. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe Venuti & Zoot SimsJoe Venuti & Zoot Sims ... CD
Chiaroscuro, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Zoot Sims really makes the album cook – adding in a lot more bop sensibility than you might expect on an album with violinist Joe Venuti – and really bringing in a heck of a lot of soul, thanks to his raspy tone on the tenor! The set's got a nicely jumping sort of feel – with John Bunch or Dick Hyman on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, and Milt Hinton on bass – and titles include "Avalon", "Russian Lullaby", "Where Or When", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Shine". CD seems to have a lot more tracks than the album – 14 numbers in all! CD

✨✧ Don ElliottDouble Trumpet Doings (aka New Counterpoint For Six Valves) ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most modern moments from Don Elliott in the 50s – a twin-trumpet album that's awash in counterpoint experiments of the time! Trumpeter Rusty Dedrick joins Don in the frontline – working together in tight head arrangements that have a strong chamber feel to them, but then opening up into more fluidly expressive solos that are the main strength of the set. Other players include Mundell Lowe on guitar, Eddie Safranski on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – as well as Dick Hyman, who handled all the arrangements and wrote a good number of the tunes! Titles include "Mine", "Vampire Till Ready", "Your Own Iron", "Dominick Seventh", "The Bull Speaks", and "Henry's Mambo". CD

✨✧ Eydie GormeBlame It On The Bossa Nova ... LP
Columbia, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Easily the grooviest album that Eydie Gorme ever cut – a set that's well known for its classic title track, but which is filled with breezy bossa numbers throughout! Few other American singers ever got the light, lively spirit of bossa this right back in the 60s – and although Eydie could sometimes be an overly-expressive singer on other records, she's got a compact touch here that's perfect for the jazzy arrangements of Nick Perito and Billy May – which themselves often use a bit of Hammond organ from Dick Hyman to give the tracks lots of Walter Wanderley-ish sort of grooves! Other instrumentalists include Pacheco on flute and Mundell Lowe on guitar – and titles include the classic "Blame It On The Bossa Nova", plus "The Coffee Song", "The Message", "One Note Samba", "The Gift", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Moon River", "Desafinado", and "Dansero". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Coleman HawkinsHawk & The Hunter ... LP
Mira, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual chapter of the Coleman Hawkins catalog – an album of easy-going ballads and late nite tracks, recorded with backings from arranger Frank Hunter – hence the title of the set! Hunter's using some lush strings on the set, but not in a way that gets in front of Hawkins' horn – and Coleman gets plenty of room to blow on the session, recorded here in a nice echoey mode that brings out the deepness of his tone even more than usual! Rhythm is by 2 different trios – one with Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson; the other with Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Jimmie Crawford – and tunes include "Easy Walker", "Traumerei", "Lazy Butterfly", "Pebbles", "Not Quite Right", "Whisper To Me", "Lonely Tenor", and "Hawk Talk". ✨✧ Tony MottolaTony & Strings/Close To You (SACD quadrophonic multi-channel) ... CD
Project 3/Vocalion (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of early 70s easy listening gems – back to back on an SACD! First up is Tony & Strings – on which the sweet guitar of Tony Mottola mixes with some well-arranged strings – all given the lean presentation of Enoch Light in the 70s, which makes for music that's a great change from the way such sounds would have been handled a decade before! Titles include "It's Going To Take Some Time", "Nature Boy", "The Candy Man", "Song Sung Blue", "Street Of Dreams", "Theme From The Godfather", and the originals "Marcello's Mazurka" and "Bossa La La La". Close To You is a sweet set that's billed as "guitar for lovers", and which has the lean sound of Tony Mottola updated nicely with some Project 3 touches for the 70s! The record's got an unusual mix of tracks – some 70s, some older, and even a Christmas tune too – and Bucky Pizzarelli and Dick Hyman make guest appearances too! Tites include "Wave", "Didn't We", "Close To You", "Moon River/What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Yesterday When I Was Young", "We've Only Just Begun", and "The Christmas Song". CD

✨✧ Beverly KenneyLonely & Blue (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1952. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by vocalist Beverly Kenny – early 50s sides done before her rise to fame on Roost and Decca, and a much-needed addition to her too-short career! The tracks were originally part of transcription discs done for radio stations, and they've got a surprisingly full, professional feel – not like the quieter material showcased on SSJ's other Kenny collection, Snuggled On Your Shoulder – but recorded with jazzy backings from arranger Eddie Safranski! The lineup includes tenor, alto, baritone, and trumpet – plus piano by either Dick Hyman and Moe Wexler, and guitar from Mundell Lowe – all to perfectly set the blue mood that Beverly's going for with her vocals. Many of the tracks here are nicely less familiar, and not overdone standards – and titles include "That Pyramid Jazz", "Long Lean & Lanky", "It's A Mean Old World", "Too Bad", "The Stars The Night The Moon", "Yours Sincerely", and "Let's Try It Again".
